For all you Tintin fans out there--and for all you 3D fans, Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg are teaming up to create a trilogy of Tintin movies, all in motion capture digital 3D CGI! No date mentioned yet, but as this will be a live action film with tons of CGI, I expect a 2009 release of the first one (probably Jackson's as Spielberg is commited to Interstellar) along with the others previously mentioned, Avatar and Monsters vs. Aliens.
Wow. I cannot wait for the summer of 2009. It will be a spectacle for sure with all of these projects coming to fruition. Tintin was written by Georges Remi and much detail went into these comics; many kids loved his character and friends. These new movies will attempt to capture the essence of the comics - but in live action! So expect immense detail and blow your socks off realism.
Of course we are talking about 2 of the best directors ever to pick up a megaphone too! A third director has not been announced as of yet and there is a lot of anticipation for that as well. The omnipresent Kathleen Kennedy will produce.
Yep. 3D and motion capture is taking off. And I couldn't be happier. Stay tuned!!
Hi Jim. Thanks for the comments on my blog. Do you know any more about the technology Cameron is using on Avatar? One of my readers (and myself) would like to know a little more.

ReplyDeleteHi James - Very little has been actually confirmed, but I do know that Cameron has been using the technology for awhile now. Rumors of an infrared camera to capture the actors motions and a new piece of headgear for them to wear RATHER THAN MAKEUP and prosthesis for special effects. That alone will save countless hours in the makeup chair as well as opening up casting to actors who can't stand doing that! With Cameron being able to see what the end result will look like (to 60% resolution) is a huge milestone in filming - and another timesaver. Folks that think Cameron will be late and overbudget are very ignorant of just how well Cameron has adopted these technologies. Cameron calls his technology 'Performance Capture' as others have, but it goes MUCH futher than 'motion capture'. It catches the emotions of the performer. Just the fact that Cameron is NOT using optical cameras is a paradigm shift. Look for a spectacular movie experience akin to the audiences that saw the first moving pictures. It will really be THAT good.
ReplyDeleteI didn't now TinTin had such a big following. As a children's librarian, we carry these graphic novels, but it is usually little kids that check them out. I am surprised Jackson picked up this project. Is TinTin bigger than I thought?
ReplyDeleteZee, Peter Jackson probably picked up Tintin as a fan just like anyone else, but with the premise that he can make it available to a much wider audience - just like Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings. Many people have heard about it, others not so much. Now it is safe to say the many many millions know about LOTR. And can appreciate it. I am sure that what Spielberg and Jackson have in mind will bring Tintin to many more people than it would have in pure literary form. While NOTHING beats a great book; a digital 3D environment certainly will come close, believe me. It is all about the imagery and immersion that makes a great book, and now a great film come to life. It all starts with great writing. Tintin's got it. I think just about every age bracket will want to see it. Tintin will be big.
