"Hugo" & Scorsese Win Big at International 3D Society Awards

Tim here. Martin Scorsese walked away with the Harold Lloyd Filmmaker Award when the International 3D Society honored him and his 3D masterpiece Hugo at the 3D Creative Arts Awards held at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Hugo received three awards, Best Live Action 3D Feature, Best Stereography (Live Action), and Best 3D Moment of the Year. Scorsese also spoke about the restoration of classic 3D movies for Blu-Ray, which was met with thunderous applause.

"My favorites are the old ones," Scorsese said. "There are so many. To see the films at home (on 3D Blu-ray) is going to be really remarkable. And to see them in their original form … seeing Dial M for Murder in 3D, in particular, is an entirely different experience."

Chris Miller, director of Puss in Boots said, "(3D) is on the verge of being recognized as a great contributor to cinematic storytelling — and that is what it is. When we added it into any sequence in the film, it was about ‘how can we best (use 3D) to tell the story."

Wim Wenders' Pina received the Jury Prize for Excellence from the Society, and additional Lumiere statuettes were awarded to The Lion King for Best 2D-to-3D Conversion, and Cave of Forgotten Dreams for Best 3D Documentary.

New Series From Digital Revolution Studios On 3net: BAMMA USA Fight Nights

Tim here, I got some news on a show that I just worked on for Digital Revolution Studios.

BAMMA USA has been the most active mixed martial arts provider in Southern California producing seven action-packed installments in 2011, and now sports fans can view their adrenaline filled events in 3D for the first time ever. 3net, the joint venture between 24/7 network from Sony, Discovery and IMAX, has combined forces with Digital Revolution Studios (DRS) and BAMMA USA to televise the mixed martial arts fights in 3D from this past year from BAMMA USA FIGHT NIGHT starting on December 15 at 9PM ET/PT on 3net (DIRECTV, Channel 107).

Combining the fastest growing sport in the world with three-dimensional entertainment provides the ultimate viewing experience. “MMA in 3D puts you so close to the action that you feel as if you are in the cage with the referee. You can almost touch the fighters and if one of the fighters gets hit and sweat is flying your way, you are going to duck and avoid it,” said BAMMA USA chief executive officer Brett Roberts.

“3net is always looking to bring our viewers the most diverse and compelling 3D programming available,” said 3net’s President and CEO Tom Cosgrove. “The action-packed sport of MMA is the kind of big event ‘first-ever’ 3D content our consumers have come to expect.”

For the first time ever, viewers can anticipate hours of 3D eye-catching entertainment including live commentary, slick submissions, exciting knockouts and competitive fights from some of the most promising and talented athletes on the west coast. Each and every event provides different results and increasing excitement which is one of the reasons why DRS decided to work with the mixed martial arts promotion.

Digital Revolution Studios President Craig Tanner specified why it was a good match to work alongside the top Southern California MMA provider stating, “DRS was excited to work with BAMMA USA, not only for the solid reputation BAMMA USA had in the MMA community, but also because of their constant commitment to increase the quality of fighters and production value of each event.”

This is an exciting show to check out! It was a pleasure for this writer to get to work with DRS and be part of the team that provided this great new 3D content.

You can check out more about the show on 3net's website: http://www.3net.com/show/70/bamma-usa-fight-night

Digital Revolution Studios' BULLPROOF 3D Premiering On Discovery's 3net Tonight

LOS ANGELES, May 5, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Full-service production company, Digital Revolution Studios (DRS), announces Bullproof, an all-new original 3D series premiering tonight, May 5, on the elite 3D channel, 3net. Bullproof is the first episodic docu-reality or "Sportumentary" series to be shot entirely in native 3D. In four breathtaking one-hour installments, the season follows four American Bullfighters – the men once known as rodeo clowns -- as they risk their lives to protect the cowboys of the Championship Bullriding (CBR) Tour.

"DRS specializes in taking a good idea and making it great. Our partners, Wild Eyes, had been trying to sell this concept for years – with no takers. Combining their idea with our production company was a great decision. Our ability to bring it to life with great stories and stunning visuals made this show unique, immersive and stunning to watch," says Director, Craig Tanner, the co-founder of DRS and the Visual Effects Editor of the blockbuster, Avatar.

The proprietary post workflow used by Digital Revolution Studios included Final Cut Pro and other readily available finishing tools, with custom developed scripts to enhance the 3D workflow. "Meeting the highest quality standards on our budget was tough, but we made it happen. Obviously, hiring the correct writer was crucial, but we saved money in the post department as DRS used its in-house creative team, including in-house editors, graphic designers, VFX artists, and 3D editors - and it helped that our Director didn't charge us a penny," indicated, Wayan Palmieri, Sr. Stereoscopic Supervisor, and CTO of Digital Revolution Studios.

Says CEO of Digital Revolution Studios, Gina Light Tanner, "When we were asked to create the 'gold standard' of 3D on a 3D TV budget, we had to think outside the box. DRS engineered 4 different rigs for Bullproof and used easily replaceable Canon cameras, like the XF 305's. We designed these rigs with absolute simplicity in mind. Getting the shot the first time was crucial. Having rigs that wouldn't create more headaches in post was critical."

Digital Revolution Studios creates its own 2D and 3D content, as well as co-produces with partners. DRS is currently accepting unique and compelling feature and TV ideas in all genres for review. Contact DRS at ideas@drs3D.com to find out more information on submission of your idea for review.

Bullproof airs in the month of May on 3net. Electric Sky is distributing this and other DRS 2D and 3D productions internationally.

About Digital Revolution Studios:

The 24/7 Network 3NET Announces Start Of Principal Photography On The World's First Native 3D War Documentary Series

Groundbreaking Four-Part Civil War Series To Utilize Scripted Reenactments And Digitized Stereoscopic Stills To Bring Historic Conflict To Life

(Culver City, Calif.) - 3net, the joint venture 24/7 3D network from Sony, Discovery and IMAX have begun principal photography on the world's first native 3D War Documentary, it was announced today by Tom Cosgrove, President & CEO of 3net. THE CIVIL WAR 3D*, the most ambitious 3D series ever produced for television, will transport viewers back in time, retelling the war's most pivotal moments both on and off the battlefields from the unique perspective of both sides in the historic conflict. The four-hour miniseries is scheduled to debut on the network in Fall 2011.

"Shooting in native 3D gives us the unique ability to bring an entirely new level of depth and emotion to this epic time in history with groundbreaking storytelling that simply hasn't been possible until now,"
said Cosgrove. "As well, THE CIVIL WAR 3D series further reflects our ongoing mission to provide the kind of immersive in-home 3D experience available nowhere else on television."

David W. Padrusch, Director of THE CIVIL WAR 3D for Towers Productions, LLC, who is also serving as Executive Producer along with the company's founder and chief creative officer, Jonathan Towers, added, "Our editorial and technical approach to telling the story of the Civil War is unlike anything previously undertaken. Jonathan and I will bring the prism of 3D technology to first-person accounts of battlefield experiences as a way of exploring the humanity and the complexity of motivations of soldiers on both sides of the war."

"The lifeblood of any historical recreation is the research," said Patrick Brennan, who serves as historical consultant and co-writer of THE CIVIL WAR 3D and is also the author of Secessionville: Assault on Charleston. "The 1st Virginia and 20th Massachusetts regiments participated in nearly every major battle in the Easter Theater, and the men in these units gave us authentic and haunting first-hand insights into America's darkest days."

THE CIVIL WAR 3D will magnify the epic fight for liberty, patriotism and democracy by resurrecting the intimate accounts of the brave men on the front lines. This landmark native 3D series will give viewers unique insight into both the Northern and Southern experience. By paralleling personal stories from soldiers in counter regiments, the Union's Massachusetts 20th and the Confederate's Virginia 1st, THE CIVIL WAR 3D will show the agony and determination endured through camp life, training, and all-out war.

Detailed letters from Union soldier Henry Livermore Abbott
, who would die in the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864, will be juxtaposed with Confederate cadet Charles Loehr, whose eloquent memoirs reveal similar sentiments from the South. Viewers will witness how their differences in beliefs, strategy, artillery and support influenced the conflict's final outcome.

Utilizing specially digitized stereoscopic archival imagery from the period, scripted reenactments and character narrative
, THE CIVIL WAR 3D promises to bring audiences a "closest to real" experience that only native 3D can deliver. Towers Productions, LLC will produce the series with Executive Producers Jonathan Towers and David W. Padrusch. Padrusch will also direct the series. Tim Pastore will serve as Executive Producer on behalf of 3net.
