You Sank My BATTLESHIP! Third Weekend In A Row Owned By THE AVENGERS - Soon To Be In Top 5 Of All Time *AND* Some Disc Release Info!

BATTLESHIP never really stood a chance against the behemoth known as THE AVENGERS. The ensemble Marvel movie took in an astounding $55,050,000 in it's third week of domestic bliss bringing it's total up to $457m (US and Canada) thus far. Peter Berg's BATTLESHIP meanwhile took in $25,350,000 in it's first weekend.

THE AVENGERS is now Disney's biggest box office success topping the top two PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN films. Up next on the ladder? STAR WARS. That should happen THIS weekend propelling the superhero movie into 5th on the all time list.

So the obvious question is will THE AVENGERS defeat MEN IN BLACK III this coming weekend? I'm pretty sure this won't happen. MIB3 carries a huge fanbase into the theaters and let's face it, it is Will Smith. So, will it would be cool to see Marvel / Disney continue swinging it's big stick, it's time for another 3D movie to step in and clobber some aliens...

We do have some more information on what to expect regarding the upcoming disc offering for THE AVENGERS set for release on September 25:

MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D Available On DVD & Blu-ray Preorder Now

Hey guys - Jim here. We all know how well MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D performed this year at the box office - taking in $72 million worldwide on a budget of only $15 million.

So how about it? You interested in getting a copy for home? You can now - available for pre-order on Amazon. It will be formally released on May 15. However, and a big however - is that while they provide four 3D glasses with the movie, they are sadly anaglyph.

Once we have a "3D in the home TV standard" then you will see 3D home videos with the cool new modern 3D glasses (and of course $ invested in equipment). You can also watch this movie in 2D though whenever the old technology gets too much for ya.

Fangoria got the scoop on the full disc details:
The film will be in both widescreen 2-D and 3-D (with four pairs of glasses); the DVDs present the movie with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, and the Blu-ray sports DTS-HD 7.1 Master Audio. Supplements on the Special Edition DVD and the Blu-ray include: Audio commentary by director Patrick Lussier and co-writer Todd Farmer; Deep Inside MY BLOODY VALENTINE making-of featurette; Sex, Blood and Screams—The Special Make-Up FX of MY BLOODY VALENTINE featurette; Deleted and extended scenes; Gag reel.

There is a cool BTS video clip from the movie here too. Thanks Jason for alerting me to this!

New On DVD And Blu-ray: "Journey To The Center Of The Earth" - With 4 3D Glasses

Thanks to Jason for the headsup.

JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH will be released on October 28th on DVD and Blu-ray and will feature both 2D and 3D versions of the movie - and will include four 3D glasses. You can pre-order with the movie link above.

The family oriented action adventure is based on the original classic Jules Verne story. If you didn't see it in theaters than you definitely missed out on some fun - but there is always the 3D Home Videos route.

The T-Rex scenes are awesome - and so is the Icelandic scenery (congrats to Vince Pace on his work on these segments).

DVD Format Studying Inclusion Of 3D Technology!

Its happening guys! There is a groundswell of interest in 3D and it is not stopping with only the theaters. The DVD Forum is now undertaking the first steps toward including 3D technology in their DVD formatting! Here is what they do:

The DVD Forum is an international association of hardware manufacturers, software firms, content providers and other users of Digital Versatile Discs.

The Forum's purpose is to exchange and disseminate ideas and information about the DVD Format and its technical capabilities, improvements and innovations.

The Forum works to promote broad acceptance of DVD products on a worldwide basis, across entertainment, consumer electronics and IT industries.

Here is the RFI from their site dated April 21st, 2008:

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION

Dear Company:

The DVD Forum is planning to study (the “Proposed Study”) the possible incorporation of 3D movie technology into The DVD Forum format specifications for DVD-Video and HD DVD-Video (the “DVD Format Specifications”). The DVD Forum plans to study only the feasibility and potential merit of incorporating 3D movie technology into the DVD Format Specifications. Please note that The DVD Forum has made no decision to incorporate such technology into the DVD Format Specifications and does not intend to select any specific 3D movie technology for inclusion at this time. After studying each proposed 3D movie technology, The DVD Forum will decide whether 3D movie technology should be incorporated into the DVD Format Specifications. As part of this study, The DVD Forum may also consider whether measures to achieve compatibility with existing DVD-Video and HD DVD-Video players would also need to be implemented in the event 3D movie technology is incorporated into the DVD Format Specifications.

The purpose of this request for information is to gather information to assist The DVD Forum in connection with the Proposed Study. Interested companies are encouraged to submit information and proposals to The DVD Forum for consideration.

Please send all information and/or proposals to the following e-mail:
secretariat@dvdforum.gr.jp

All submissions must be sent via email to the individuals listed above NO LATER THAN May 17, 2008 (JST). All submissions MUST be accompanied by a signed copy of the attached Consent Form (PDF), executed by a legally authorized representative on behalf of your company. Submissions that are not accompanied by a signed copy of the attached Consent Form will be returned to the respondent and will not be considered by The DVD Forum in connection with the Proposed Study. Accepted submissions will not be returned.

Working Group 1 of The DVD Forum will begin notifying respondents after May 17, 2008 of the start of the Proposed Study. Accordingly, please include the name of your company’s contact person and such individual’s email address in all submissions.

Best regards,

Secretary Office of the DVD Forum

BRING ON THE 3D DVDs GUYS! There is certainly enough 3D movies in the production hopper to make it happen right now - 2009 will be the year of 3D.

Here is one of the Restricted trailers for the movie:

Note that the movie is not available in 3D for home entertainment as of yet. Look for 3D compatibility in the next year to two years. It is coming, believe me. It is still an awesome story and well worth the purchase.
