Tim here. There is a cool Chrome Experiment coming to the web this fall for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. It's an interactive map! Designed by Google… that's right: Google! The best mapping company on the planet (sorry Apple) is bringing Tolkien fans a Middle-earth map experience unlike anything experienced before.
Part of Google's Chrome Experiment this interactive map will be best experienced in the web browser Chrome. The experiment uses WebGL and the Web Audio API on Chrome for Android to bring Middle-earth to life in the browser with 3D Trolls, interactive musical experiences, and more. Obviously these experiments are ploys to boost the popularity of Google's browser and mobile platform, but some of the past experiments have been proven to work on other browsers. Generally, however, they work best on the Chrome browser.
Below is a preview video of what we can expect to experience:
Keep an eye out for the entire experience coming later this year. Visitthehobbit.com/middle-earthfor the experience when it hits the web. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits IMAX 3D and RealD 3D theaters December 13th.
YES!! I love these promotions and I will be first in line. :-) JOHN CARTER recently did this same type of marketing ploy and I think it's the way to go for for these mega-releases.
From IMAX:“Everyone who attends the IMAX 3D midnight show of Marvel’s The Avengers on May 4th (the evening of May 3rd) at participating locations will receive a limited edition IMAX print exclusive to the 12:01 show!”
Check out the poster! Looks amazing. I'm going to have mine laminated for my office wall.
Guys, event movies like this only happen once in a blue moon. Get out there and get this poster! If you're going to go to see the movie anyway why not enjoy the added bonus?
Marvel's THE AVENGERS opens May 4 (the evening of May 3 at midnight for the poster!).

Oh that ridiculous squirrel! He's back for more. If you will remember, Fox released the first part of this early marketing carrot back in January and now we get to see how it all turns out in the end. Surely he gets his acorn back!
Here's what happens in the second episode: Scrat’s nutty pursuit of the cursed acorn, which he’s been after since the dawn of time, has world-changing consequences – a continental cataclysm that triggers the greatest adventure of all for Manny, Diego and Sid. In the wake of these upheavals, Sid reunites with his cantankerous Granny, and the herd encounters a ragtag menagerie of seafaring pirates determined to stop them from returning home.
To get you started here's the first one again:
And finally, here's SCRAT'S CONTINENTAL CRACK-UP PART 2:
LOVE IT! I can't imagine a better character to have in your marketing arsenal than Scrat. Someone deserves a raise... :-)
In a brilliant marketing move for the upcoming PUSS IN BOOTS release, the fine folks at Dreamworks Animation has pulled off a very cool knock off of the famous Isaiah Mustafa commercial for Old Spice. I've put both clips one after the other for comparison and... well it has viral all over it. Nicely done!
Jim here. Check out the free iPhone application at the iPhone App Store called RhinoBall - a promotional piece in advance of the November 21st wide release of their sure to be massive box office hit, BOLT.
The game features a very well thought out and delivered graphics, effects and music and integrates the iPhone's accelerometer stunningly well. Nice trailers are included too (TV as well as Theater).
