...AND Just Like, That Sony Announces Playstation 4 3D Blu-ray Support !

BOOM. Just as Microsoft announces its first ever support of 3D Blu-ray discs in the XBOX One, Sony has stepped up to the plate and stated that its PlayStation 4 will also get 3D Blu-ray disc support with its next software update (v1.75) coming next week!

For all of you PS4 owners, there was no mention of other home theater features in the mix yet, like Bluetooth remote, MP3 playback or DLNA but really, that has to be coming soon too. For those of you in the UK, you now have support for Sky's NOW TV app (XBOX One version coming soon) which gives you subscription based on-demand movies (£8.99 monthly), TV shows (£4.99) and sports (£9.99).

I'm still using my PS3 for 3D Blu-ray playback and it remains my hub of entertainment.

Thanks for the heads up Johnno!

Finally! XBOX ONE Gets 3D Blu-ray Support

Yes! Finally Microsoft will be implementing 3D Blu-ray support for it's XBOX ONE console with a new software update coming in August. This marks the first time the XBOX platform will offer the cool feature.

This is HUGE news in the platform gaming and entertainment field. 3D support adds the immersion that is expected with console owners as anyone with a PS3 and 3D TV will attest to.

Some other improvements coming with the update:
  • Activity feed updates, and expanded friend area on Home screen: you'll be able to see what your friends are doing, and be more aware of it right from the Xbox One dashboard. And it'll show how long a friend's been away from his or her console.
  • Mobile purchases: You can buy games or other content from the SmartGlass app or from Xbox.com, and have it download right to your Xbox One remotely.
  • Low battery notification: You can already peek at your controller's battery level, but a pop-up warning now lets you know when it needs a recharge.
  • Disable notifications during video: It's amazing this wasn't available before.
  • OneGuide in Brazil, Mexico, Austria and Ireland: Four more countries can try connecting their Xbox One to their TV and browse TV listings.
Those with early preview access could get these updates as soon as this week.

Sony's Playstation 4 still hasn't updated with 3D support as of yet, but it is expected as they did with the Playstation 3 support for 3D Blu-rays (that I am still enjoying tremendously).

Now I'm considering an XBOX ONE purchase whereas I've always been a Sony guy. Congratulations on the 3D support Microsoft! Thanks for the heads up Tobias!

3D GAMING: XBOX ONE To Support 3D And 4K

Tim here, and I've got some news for XBOX users regarding 4K and 3D! The new XBOX ONE will support 4K resolution and 3D output! This was revealed last week by Microsoft's Larry Hryb in a Yahoo chat session.

In response to a question regarding whether the new console will include these features Hryb stated "XBOX ONE supports both 3-D and 4K, including 4K for Blu-Ray."

In regards to 4K adoption it is not without its hurdles. Sony Electronics in February stated that 4K videos require downloads over 100GB in file size. Whoa! That's a huge file. Considering the XBOX ONE comes with 500 GB of internal storage, that would mean about 5 4K movies could be stored on the device at that size. Also, internet speeds are not yet fast enough to speedily get 100 GB quickly when downloading.

While Sony's Playstation 4 (PS4) will support 4K output for photos and videos, it will not support 4K games. Microsoft has confirmed that XBOX ONE games will support both native 4K and upscaling to 4K.

Look out for more info regarding XBOX ONE and its 3D support on MarketSaw. Read more about XBOX ONE on its official website.

New Breed Of Theatrical 3D Advertising Launches - Samsung's Interactive Pre-Movie 3D Gaming Ignites Audiences

Very cool new concept using your hands to control game motion on a 3D screen at the theater! Samsung is ramping up their cinema marketing for their brand new Galaxy S III phone and they are certainly not being cheap about it. $20 million not cheap. Apparently it's the biggest cinema ad buy EVER.

The cool thing about the advertising is that it's in 3D: A traditional advertisement - but in 3D, *AND* an interactive 3D game for the audience to participate in. The game was set in motion by US advertising agency Razorfish, produced by Audience Entertainment/NCM and the live action was produced by Geneva Film Co. headed by my good friend Director James Stewart.

Here's what Digital Outsider had to say about the new 3D advertising / entertainment:
The campaign will run all summer long across National Cinemedia’s entire network of around 18,000 screens nationwide as part of its FirstLook pre-show package of entertainment and advertising, which should put the budget for the cinema ad component at $20 million or more (NCM wouldn’t comment, but comparisons with other cinema ad campaigns confirm it should be well into eight figures; Ad Age earlier reported that Samsung is more than doubling its 2011 budget for promoting Galaxy products this year).

The centerpiece of the campaign is a two-minute-long 3D spot featuring two of the 20-somethings from Samsung’s earlier campaign promoting the S II, not-so-gently mocking Apple fanboys (in which one of them reminds the other, snarkily, “Dude, you’re a barrista”). This time around, while appearing to wreak havoc on the theater from the projection booth, the guys demonstrate one of the big new features of the S III: users can share content with each other simply by tapping the phones, which employ near field technology.

The campaign also includes a first-of-its-kind 3D interactive crowd motion game, designed by Audience Entertainment, running at a limited number of theaters equipped with the necessary motion sensor technology. In the game, the audience has to work together to make two phones (which appear to be “hovering” in the ether) touch to share content (as seen in the video) -- thus demonstrating the key new feature again, this time with audience participation.

Check out the game below:

We're seeing the beginning of a new phase of theatrical advertising that I hope is much more enjoyable for audiences. Embedding brands and experiences in 3D games that can be played before a movie starts is a brilliant move. Kudos to the companies involved!

Crytek And Prophet Take Aim With Crysis 3!

Hey folks, Adam here. I know its been a long time since my last post so it's about time you hear from me again. Today's news couldn't be coming at a better time since it was around this time last year that Crysis 2 launched.

Check out my thoughts after the official press release below!

Crytek Takes Aim with Crysis 3 – The First Blockbuster Shooter of 2013

Fight in the New York ‘Liberty Dome’, Exploit Seven Natural Wonders and Wield Advanced Alien Weaponry in the Ultimate Sandbox Shooter

Pre-order the Crysis 3 Hunter Edition for Early Access to the New Crysis 3 Signature Bow and XP Boost in Multiplayer*

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The hunted becomes the hunter! Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:EA) and award-winning developer Crytek GmbH, today announced Crysis® 3, the premier sandbox shooter experience of 2013. Powered by Crytek’s proprietary CryENGINE®, Crysis 3 advances the state of the art with unparalleled visuals and dynamic shooter gameplay. Players take on the role of ‘Prophet’ as he returns to New York, only to discover that the city has been encased in a Nanodome created by the corrupt Cell Corporation. The New York City Liberty Dome is a veritable urban rainforest teeming with overgrown trees, dense swamplands and raging rivers. Within the Liberty Dome, seven distinct and treacherous environments become known as the Seven Wonders. This dangerous new world demands advanced weapons and tactics. Prophet will utilize a lethal composite bow, an enhanced Nanosuit and devastating alien tech to become the deadliest hunter on the planet.

“Crysis 3 is a thrilling mix of sandbox gameplay, advanced combat and hi-tech human and alien weaponry that shooter fans will love,” said Cevat Yerli, Chief Executive Officer of Crytek. “Leveraging the latest CryENGINE technology, we’re able to deliver seven unique themes that offer stunning and visually loaded gameplay experiences. We cannot wait until people get their hands on the game.”

Set in 2047, Prophet is on a revenge mission after uncovering the truth behind Cell Corporation’s motives for building the quarantined Nanodomes. The citizens were told that the giant citywide structures were resurrected to protect the population and to cleanse these metropolises of the remnants of Ceph forces. In reality, the Nanodomes are CELL’s covert attempt at a land and technology grab in their quest for global domination. With Alien Ceph lurking around every corner and human enemies on the attack, nobody is safe in the path of vengeance. Everyone is a target in Prophet’s quest for retribution.

Crytek also announced that players who are ready to start the hunt can pre-order the Crysis® 3 Hunter Edition* today. The Crysis 3 Hunter Edition gives players the tools to become the ultimate hunter in multiplayer with early access to the new signature bow and its attachments, plus the Hunter Nanosuit module which adds additional power and functionality to the super-suit. Gamers who pre-order now will also have a head start when playing online with a bonus XP boost up to level 5, a unique bow skin and three exclusive dog tags to hunt in style**. The Crysis 3 Hunter Edition is available on Origin.com and other participating retailers for $59.99.

In addition to receiving the Crysis 3 Hunter Edition, select retailers are offering gamers that pre-order Crysis 3 the following early multiplayer unlocks:

Stalker Pack – Includes the base game, all Hunter Edition content and the following early multiplayer unlocks: for players who like to stalk their prey from the shadows the Stalker Pack provides early multiplayer access to the deadly semi-auto Jackal shotgun. This powerful, close-range shotgun comes with a unique silencer attachment, custom weapon skin and two exclusive themed in-game dog tags.

Overkill Pack – Includes the base game, all Hunter Edition content and the following early multiplayer unlocks: the Overkill Pack features early multiplayer access to the Typhoon assault weapon and skin. Spewing 500 rounds a second, the Typhoon gives players the ability to go guns blazing to take back the Liberty Dome. Also included are two exclusive Overkill themed in-game dog tags.

Predator Pack – Includes the base game, all the Hunter Edition content and the following early multiplayer unlocks: the Predator Pack delivers early multiplayer access to the Feline submachine gun and exclusive camo. With an extremely fast rate of fire and a 60 round magazine the Feline is highly effective and deadly, at short range.

This is very exciting news because you can count on Crysis 3 being in 3D! Crytek has learned a great deal since releasing their first S3D game with Crysis 2 (excellent BTW!) and they are set to fix any of the wrongs of the previous sequel both for gameplay and technical quality in every realm. I can't wait to see the improvements the developer has made with CryEngine 3. You've got to give them SOME breathing room because C2 was a massive undertaking for them to deliver a AAA 3D experience on PC and consoles for the first time. They now should be prepared to deliver something groundbreaking come Spring 2013! Hopefully the game will be available for Nintendo's new Wii U platform as well!

GAMING UPDATE: HALO Going 3D *AND* MasterImage's Glasses Free Display - 500 Times Better Than The 3DS!

Time for a 3D gaming update! And it's a humdinger on two fronts...

Microsoft's humungous gaming franchise HALO is going 3D for the upcoming November release of HALO: ANNIVERSARY. The game will be a reboot of the original HALO game made (can you believe it) 10 years ago.

Further it is the first of the lot to NOT be made by Bungie Software. Really looking forward to this!

*AND*

Word is starting to get out about MasterImage 3D's new 4.3" WVGA (this is the same one I reported on back in May). Venturebeat's Dean Takahashi demoed one recently and was suitably impressed.

Says Takahashi: "The quality blew me away. On a 4.3-inch WVGA screen, Taylor showed that he could demonstrate a 3D movie running in stereoscopic 3D. I didn’t need to wear glasses to see the sharp 3D imagery. When I moved my head, it didn’t get blurry. And if I moved my head too far to the side, it gracefully transitioned to a two-dimensional image."

Roy Taylor, EVP & GM For MasterImage 3D recently said: “We’ve measured their alignment accuracy and we believe we’re 500 percent more accurate than the 3DS. We don’t have any issues with eye strain.”

I was not impressed with the Nintendo 3DS from the very start. In fact the best thing about it was their marketing I suppose. I found the screen to be headache inducing and just not a pleasurable gaming experience. Personally I think Nintendo should seriously consider the cell matrix parallax barrier technology from MasterImage 3D for any future handheld needs.

But that's not the end of the product line from MasterImage 3D. 7" and 10" tablet screens are coming this fall! Stay tuned!!

Infinity Ward And Sledgehammer Taking MODERN WARFARE 3 To S3D?

Hey Folks, Adam Loncar here. Activision finally announced the obvious - that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is coming! The product will be more than likely S3D because Bobby Kotick (Activision Blizzard CEO) stated that last year's Black Ops set the standard for key features in all future Call of Duty projects. Since 3D was a big selling point for Black Ops it makes sense to infer that MW3 and all other COD games will also be in stereo. We'll confirm that as soon as possible for you.

After the press release be sure to watch the clips below! The reveal trailer is first followed by the gameplay trailer...

Here is the official press release (emphasis is mine):

Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 3 Strikes November 8, 2011
Year's Most Anticipated Entertainment Launch Stages World Wide Invasion

Global warfare is raging and the battle will begin on November 8 when the cultural phenomenon Modern Warfare® returns with the worldwide release of Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 3. "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is by far the most epic Call of Duty experience yet. The teams at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games have worked tirelessly to create for the Call of Duty player a scale that is unimaginable with a level of polish and creativity that will push the genre forward," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, Inc. "The passion and energy of our developers is reflected in everything about the title. From the innovative gameplay, to the cinematic intensity, to the most advanced multiplayer ever, Modern Warfare 3 will raise the bar for this already incredible franchise."

Nintendo 3DS To Offer 3D Movie Trailers, NetFlix And 3D Classics Gaming!

Nintendo issued a 3DS press release today with some very interesting 3D news! This is the first I have heard of this, but I'm not really surprised: Nintendo will be offering "3D Classics" gaming which will include remastered classic video games. Very cool. No word on just what games will be selected initially.

Something a little more of note, Nintendo also announced that you will be able to watch 3D movie trailers on the 3DS!! I was hoping this would exist on the unit. Wish fulfilled. This functionality will be made available to 3DS owners at the end of May with a wireless system update.

Further, this summer the 3DS will offer NetFlix unlimited streaming movies for $7.99 a month.

Here is the related snippet from the Nintendo press release:
A short-form video service will let people view trailers for Hollywood movies in 3D and access video game trailers, screen shots, background information and links to publishers’ websites. Content will include short video clips, such as comedy shorts or music videos, selected by Nintendo and delivered to Nintendo 3DS users who choose to receive them.

You can read the whole release right here.

Nintendo 3DS launches March 27 in the United States at a suggested retail price of $249.99. I will be bagging one of these asap! Thanks test24 for the link!

Finally! Nintendo 3DS Arrives March 27!! It'll Cost Ya $250

YES! After waiting what seems like an eternity, we will be finally getting the Nintendo 3DS on our shelves March 27! Europeans will see it locally 2 days earlier.

The unit will cost $249.99 in North America
and 250-300 Euro overseas.

Nintendo also recommends that kids younger than 7 years old should not use the unit as their eye muscles have not fully formed. I use the same precaution for any S3D experience frankly.

Here is the official press release:
The company that changed the world of video games with touch-screen gaming in 2004 and motion-controlled gaming in 2006 now pioneers the next dimensional shift. On March 27, Nintendo introduces portable entertainment in 3D – without the need for special glasses. The Nintendo 3DS™ system will be available in either Cosmo Black or Aqua Blue, and will have a suggested retail price of $249.99. Pricing outside the United States will be established by the local markets, but offer similar consumer value.

“Nintendo 3DS is a category of one – the experience simply doesn’t exist anywhere else,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “You have to see Nintendo 3DS to believe it. And it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before.”

Nintendo 3DS includes two screens. The bottom touch screen makes use of a telescoping stylus that is stored in the unit itself. The top screen displays 3D visuals to the naked eye. Looking at the screen is like peering through a window into a world where characters and objects have true depth. The system also has a 3D Depth Slider that lets players select the level of 3D they enjoy the most. The 3D effect can be ratcheted up to the highest level, scaled back to a more moderate setting or even turned off completely, depending on the preference of the user.

In addition to the familiar + Control Pad and button controls found on previous Nintendo hand-helds, Nintendo 3DS now also includes a Circle Pad, which provides a full 360 degrees of direction, giving it the freedom and precision needed to play games in 3D worlds. It brings the same degree of responsiveness that gamers enjoyed when Nintendo introduced an analog control stick to navigate Mario™ through Super Mario 64™ on the Nintendo 64™ system.

A built-in motion sensor and gyro sensor can react to the motion and tilt of the system, so whether players are twisting their systems side to side or moving them up and down, their motion-compatible Nintendo 3DS games respond instantly. No other system includes so many tools for game developers to create new and fun experiences for players.

Two features will allow owners to stay connected in new ways. Both deliver bonus content to owners as they move around during their daily lives, so users might open up their systems at any moment to find new surprises. For owners who choose to activate it, the StreetPass™ feature is capable of exchanging game information with other Nintendo 3DS systems as owners pass one another. Small packets of information can be exchanged using this data-transfer method, such as Mii™ character data, maps for games or high scores and custom character data for different games. The SpotPass™ feature can connect to compatible public hotspots and through a wireless broadband Internet connection at home, even if the system is in Sleep Mode. Once connected, the Nintendo 3DS system will receive new content and updates on a regular basis.

Each Nintendo 3DS system comes pre-loaded with a variety of fun games, applications and features, such as Nintendo 3DS Camera. Nintendo 3DS has three cameras. One camera points at the user, while two additional cameras point outward. These two outer cameras take photos in 3D. The fun, built-in game Face Raiders™ asks users to shoot at funny depictions of their own faces. Nintendo 3DS, when put into Sleep Mode, can act as a pedometer, while letting users earn Play Coins for the steps they take that can then be traded in for additional content in compatible games and applications. By accessing the Activity Log, users can check their steps as well as their play time. With Nintendo 3DS Sound, users can enjoy sound-manipulation tools or rock out while listening to their MP3 or AAC music files. An upgraded Internet browser will also be available via a system update.

The Mii Maker™ application gives users new tools to create Mii™ characters even more easily: Users can either import Mii characters from their Wii systems using an SD memory card or use the camera to take a picture of a person and have an automatic Mii character created. Users can even save their Mii characters to an SD card as pictures, which enables them to be used any way a digital photo would for personal use, such as a profile picture on social-networking sites.

The Nintendo eShop, through a system update, will offer access to downloadable games, including Nintendo DSiWare™ and ones specifically made for Nintendo 3DS. Also, just as the Virtual Console service on Wii makes retro games available for download, the Virtual Console games on Nintendo 3DS will be pulled from classic Game Boy™ and Game Boy Color games. Players will be able to view game videos, download demos for select games and see how other consumers rated the games. The Nintendo eShop will use a cash-based system. Users can either input credit card information in the shop or purchase a Nintendo 3DS Prepaid Card at retail locations.

Nintendo 3DS comes with six augmented-reality cards, called AR cards. When the two outer cameras are pointed at the cards, they read the cards and superimpose images and animations onto the scene. So users shouldn’t be surprised if they see a dragon popping out of their kitchen tables. Developers can also use this technology to add creative new experiences to their games.

Built-in parental controls can be used to limit Internet access or some of the wireless functions. By using a PIN code, parents also can turn off the 3D function altogether, or limit the ratings of the games that their kids can play.

Fans of online play will be happy to learn that the friend codes for Nintendo 3DS are specific to each Nintendo 3DS system, not each game. Once friends trade hardware codes, at any time they can check their friends list to see which of their friends are online and what they are playing.

Nintendo 3DS can also play Nintendo DS game cards with their original 2D visuals. The system also includes a slot for an SD memory card. To help users get started, every system comes with a 2GB SD memory card (though owners can provide whatever size they like). Using a service that will be provided after the hardware’s launch, Nintendo DSi™ and Nintendo DSi XL™ owners will be able to transfer games downloaded from the Nintendo DSi Shop onto their new Nintendo 3DS systems.

During the launch window (between the March 27 launch date and the E3 Expo in early June) more than 30 games will be available to Nintendo 3DS owners. These include Nintendo-created games like Pilotwings Resort™, which has players soaring acrobatically over iconic Wuhu Island; nintendogs™ + cats, a new version of the Nintendo DS classic with a feline enhancement; and Steel Diver™, a side-scrolling submarine adventure that gives the illusion that the player is peering into an aquarium. Other Nintendo 3DS games in the works include The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™ 3D, Star Fox 64™ 3D, Kid Icarus™: Uprising and new installments in the Mario Kart™, Animal Crossing™ and Paper Mario™ series.

Nintendo 3DS also enjoys some of the strongest third-party support of any system launch. A partial list of titles coming soon to Nintendo 3DS includes Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked from Atlus; Super Street Fighter® IV 3D Edition and Resident Evil®: The Mercenaries 3D from Capcom; Madden NFL Football from EA SPORTS; The Sims™ 3 from Electronic Arts; Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D from Konami; LEGO® Star Wars® III: The Clone Wars™ from LucasArts™; Ridge Racer® 3D and Dual Pen Sports™ from Namco Bandai Games America Inc.; Super Monkey Ball™ 3D, Thor™: God of Thunder and CRUSH™ 3D from SEGA; BUST-A-MOVE™ UNIVERSE from Square Enix, Inc.; Samurai Warriors® Chronicles and Dead or Alive® Dimensions from Tecmo Koei America Corp.; and Asphalt™ 3D, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon® Shadow Wars, Combat of Giants™: Dinosaurs 3D, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell® 3D, Rayman® 3D and Rabbids® Travel in Time from Ubisoft.

James Cameron A Huge Crysis 2 Fan!

According to Cevat Yerli, president of Crytek and maker of the gaming standard CRYSIS, James Cameron has seen CRYSIS 2 and was enamored.

Says Yerli: “James Cameron has seen Crysis 2, and he loved what he saw because his eyes are trained for 3D more than anyone else’s, and that makes me confident that we have a super-high-end 3D experience on all formats.”

From Next-gen: Yerli confirms that Crysis 2 is not Crytek’s first foray into 3D, saying that the developer began work two and a half years ago on a project that was exclusively in stereoscopic 3D. “A lot of this knowledge is now in the Crysis 2 3D experience,” he says. “That’s why we have, in my opinion, a benchmark 3D implementation.”

Yerli even draws comparison between Crytek’s upcoming sequel and the Cameron-directed smash hit that has fuelled Hollywood’s current love for all things three-dimensional. “I’ll even claim it’s the same as Avatar’s status in 3D,” he says.

Those are mighty powerful words to invoke a comparison to AVATAR.
But you know what? With knowing the impact the original CRYSIS had on the gaming world - AND the computing world (CRYSIS was often used as the industry benchmark for graphics cards), I wouldn't be surprised if what Yerli says is true. In fact, I am counting on it.

So be prepared for a massive 3D gaming release with CRYSIS 2 on Tuesday, March 22! Can't wait...

Thanks to Adam for the link! Check out his original thoughts on CRYSIS 2 right here.

CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS Surpasses $1 Billion In Sales Worldwide!!

Over 600 Million Hours Logged Playing Call of Duty: Black Ops

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 21, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Activision Publishing, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) announced today that Call of Duty: Black Ops continues to set sell-through records crossing the $1 billion mark in sales worldwide since its launch in November, according to internal Activision estimates.

In its first five days alone, the game sold more than $650 million worldwide, outpacing theatrical box office, book and video game sales records for five-day worldwide sell through in dollars, according to internal Activision estimates and boxofficemojo.com. The game exceeded Activision's previous five-day worldwide record of $550 million set by last year's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare® 2.

To date, more than 600 million hours have been logged playing Call of Duty: Black Ops since the game launched on November 9, 2010. According to Microsoft, the average player logs on more than once a day and plays for more than one hour each time. Over half of that time is spent playing online with and against friends, illustrating the unique social characteristics of the game.

"In all of entertainment, only Call of Duty and "Avatar" have ever achieved the billion dollar revenue milestone this quickly," said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. "This is a tribute to the global appeal of the Call of Duty franchise, the exceptional talent at Treyarch and the hundreds of extraordinary people across our many Call of Duty studios including Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer that work tirelessly on the franchise. Our ability to provide the most compelling, immersive entertainment experience, and enhance it with regular, recurring content that delivers hundreds of hours of audience value, has allowed Call of Duty to continue to set sales and usage records."

Kotick continued, "This extraordinary milestone was achieved because of the tens of millions of passionate Call of Duty players around the world. Global audiences have logged billions of hours online with Call of Duty games on Xbox LIVE, the Playstation Network and on personal computers. This unique level of community engagement has enabled Call of Duty to become one of the world's most engaged online communities."

"Call of Duty continues to rewrite not just the record books, but also the rules of interactive entertainment," says Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. "Even more remarkable than the number of units sold is the number of hours people are playing the game together online which are unprecedented. Call of Duty is more than a game, it's a true community."

CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS Sets New 5 Day Entertainment Industry Record Grossing Over $650 Million Worldwide!!

While I disagree with the comparison to the entertainment industry as a whole and movies in particular, you cannot dispute the astronomical numbers that this stereoscopic 3D game is pole vaulting. Very impressive indeed!

Here is the official press release:

- Largest Entertainment Launch in History Establishes New Xbox® LIVE™ Record with 2.6 Million Unique Players in One Day

- Call of Duty: Black Ops Was Best-Selling Video Game Launch of All Time on Amazon.com and at GameStop

/PRNewswire/ -- Activision Publishing, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) announced that Treyarch's Call of Duty®: Black Ops has shattered theatrical box office, book and video game sales records for five-day worldwide sell through in dollars. The game established an all-new five-day worldwide sell-through record of more than $650 million, exceeding Activision's previous five-day worldwide record of $550 million set by last year's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare® 2, according to internal Activision estimates.

"Call of Duty has become the first entertainment property in history to set five-day launch records for two consecutive years across all forms of entertainment," said Robert Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard. "The title's success illustrates the mass appeal of interactive entertainment as millions of consumers are choosing to play Call of Duty: Black Ops at unprecedented levels rather than engage in other forms of media. The number of people playing online and the number of hours they are playing demonstrates how online gaming has become a mainstream form of entertainment and certainly validates Activision Blizzard's leadership role in online entertainment."

"There are many reasons for the success of Black Ops, but first and foremost is the fact that our team at Treyarch delivered a truly awesome game, and in the process have established themselves as one of the most talented developers in the world,"
said Eric Hirshberg, CEO, Activision Publishing. "There are millions of people all over the world engaging in this community. It's our job to keep them coming back for more."

In addition to beating all previous first-and five-day box office, book and video game sell-through records, Call of Duty: Black Ops set two new records on Xbox® LIVE™.

According to Microsoft:
- More than 5.9 million multiplayer hours were logged playing Call of Duty: Black Ops by end of launch day, November 9.
- More than 2.6 million unique gamers played Call of Duty: Black Ops in one day on November 9.

"With a record breaking performance on Xbox LIVE, home to the world's largest Call of Duty gaming community, Call of Duty: Black Ops has already carved out its legacy as one of the biggest video games in history,"
said Don Mattrick, president of the interactive entertainment business at Microsoft. "We congratulate our partners at Activision and Treyarch and are proud to continue offering the best Call of Duty experience to our 25 million global Xbox LIVE members by launching all Call of Duty map packs first on Xbox 360."

The game also was a tremendous success on the PlayStation® 3 and the best-selling video game launch of all time on Amazon.com and at GameStop.

"Call of Duty: Black Ops has been an incredible success on PlayStation 3," said Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA). "Treyarch's latest efforts are driving unprecedented traffic to the PlayStation Network with the flagship online experience this holiday season."

"Call of Duty: Black Ops had the highest number of pre-orders of any video game to date," said Paul Raines, CEO, GameStop. "It went on to become our biggest video game launch ever, which bodes well for game sales as we enter the holidays."

Activision is excited about the performance of Call of Duty: Black Ops, but given that it is still very early in the holiday shopping season, the company remains cautiously optimistic.
Call of Duty: Black Ops is rated "M" (Mature) by the ESRB for Blood, Drug Reference, Intense Violence and Language. For additional information visit www.callofduty.com/blackops and also via Twitter @JD_2020.

Duty Calls For Deniable Black Ops To Enter Into The Third Gaming Dimension!

Hello folks, Adam Loncar here. It is my pleasure to inform you that one of the biggest entertainment launches of 2010 is fully embracing stereoscopic-3D technology: Call of Duty: Black Ops!

This announcement is truly a shock to the gaming industry because usually a developer will reveal key development features early on.

I have always thought that the Call of Duty franchise is perfect for 3D technology
and that it would eventually happen. But I could never have guessed we would be getting it now. It is such a joy to see it come to fruition!

Here is the official press release (emphasis is mine):
Call of Duty(R): Black Ops to Utilize State-of-the-Art Active Shutter 3D Technology 3D Version of the Most Anticipated Game of the Year Set to Deliver Unprecedented Immersive Action Experience

/PRNewswire via COMTEX News Network/ -- In what could become the definitive 3D game experience, Treyarch's Call of Duty(R): Black Ops will also be playable in stereoscopic 3D when the game launches at retail outlets worldwide on November 9th. Activision Publishing, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) today revealed that the game will be compatible with 3D-ready HDTVs and 3D PCs utilizing state-of-the-art active shutter 3D glasses, delivering true depth of field and an unprecedented level of immersion that is perfectly suited for the Call of Duty action experience. Call of Duty: Black Ops will be playable in both 3D and non-3D on the Xbox 360(R) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation(R) 3 computer entertainment system and Windows(R) PC.

"Development of stereoscopic 3D began as an R&D project, but once we saw what the technology brought to the Call of Duty experience, what a great fit and how immersive it was, we knew that we had to develop it for Black Ops. Aiming down the sights of your weapons, flying in helicopters, rappelling down mountains, and moving through highly detailed environments are just some of the awesome experiences you will have in 3D with Black Ops," says Mark Lamia, Studio Head of Treyarch.

"Call of Duty: Black Ops is already the most anticipated entertainment launch of the year, and the addition of a fully playable 3D version will truly take gaming to the next level," said Chris Homeister, senior vice president and general manager of the home entertainment group at Best Buy. "Through our footprint of nearly 1100 retail locations across the country and online, as well as our wide selection of 3D-enabled products, Best Buy is uniquely positioned to bring this exciting experience to life for consumers. We're thrilled to partner with Activision to support this great new chapter in home entertainment."

Added Lamia, "We made sure the experience is seamless for gamers to use with a simple menu option to enable stereoscopic 3D or disable it at any time whether playing in the single player campaign, multiplayer or Zombies."

Treyarch should surpass Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2's gameplay with this newest release of Call of Duty. Further, the release timing is just about perfect with Crytek's Crysis 2 coming out early 2011 instead of its original holiday 2010 release. The ultimate killer category for 3D gaming in the home is AAA 'first-person shooter'! Call of Duty: Black Ops will be available in 3D and 2D on November 9, 2010 worldwide for PC, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3. The Wii version does not support 3D.

Couple of great 3D gaming related updates for you!

Sony has announced (at the Tokyo Game Show) that the PS3 will be getting the long awaited firmware update that allows the game consoles to play 3D Blu-ray movies.

The firmware update is v3.50 and is available September 21. Of course the Playstation 3 already supports stereoscopic 3D gaming with available titles such as WipeoutHD, MotorStorm 3D Rift, SuperStardust 3 and the upcoming Killzone 3 and MotorStorm Apocalypse.
"3D Blu-ray 3D Disc playback, in addition to stereoscopic 3D gaming and stereoscopic photo support will deliver users a total 3D package for PS3 owners," James Gallagher, blog manager at Sony Europe wrote on the official PlayStation blog.

*AND*

Kojima has announced (also at the Tokyo Game Show) that METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SNAKE EATER will be released on the upcoming handheld Nintendo 3DS system sometime in 2011.

Crytek Adds Stereoscopic-3D Support And Tools To CryEngine 3!

Hey folks, Adam Loncar here again. It's extremely exciting that Crytek is releasing a new version of its state-of-the-art CryEngine 3!

Frankfurt, Germany – September 01, 2010

Crytek released version 3.2 of its CryENGINE 3 SDK today. This major upgrade includes full Stereoscopic 3D (S-3D) support for all supported platforms and with almost no performance impact or compromise on graphical quality. With the groundbreaking CryENGINE 3 Screen Space Re-Projection Stereo (SSRS) solution, developers are not required to write any code, or change any assets to take advantage of the S-3D technology. This solution renders in S-3D with minimal performance loss and zero quality impact. CryENGINE®3 Live Create™, which allows 100% real-time, simultaneous editing across all supported platforms, also runs in S-3D. It allows developers to make a single change in our CryENGINE®3 Sandbox™ editor and then immediately see and play the S-3D output on the target platform. Furthermore, CryENGINE 3 can output HD resolution S-3D movies from the renderer in real-time.

CryENGINE 3 supports all industry standard output formats – meaning there is no requirement for bespoke hardware or top of the range displays to benefit from S-3D in games. Specifically, CryENGINE 3 has multiplatform (Xbox 360™, PlayStation®3 and PC) native support for display technology including:

• HDMI 1.4 Stereo Standard

• Frame-compatible formats for Pre-HDMI 1.4 TVs

• Anaglyphic 3D

• Stereoscopic Projection

“In the past year, S-3D has been the most exciting technological development in the world of entertainment. Following the huge success of the movie Avatar, movie theatre companies and TV manufacturers have rushed to support this amazing new way to immerse their audience in their content. Record numbers of people returning to theatres have evidenced the appeal of S-3D for consumers. Now TV corporations, console platform owners and game publishers are looking for unique and compelling S-3D content to deliver to their customers. With CryENGINE 3 we offer a solution that is far superior to any other game development solution out there. Developers can easily evaluate the new version of CryENGINE 3 through our mycryengine.com portal.” says Carl Jones, Director of Global Business Development CryENGINE.

Here is the clip of him playing the upcoming KILLZONE 3 on the Sony PlayStation with a 3D Bravia S3DHD TV - check it out!!

Wow - that game looks AMAZING! And to quote Fallon: "Even dying is fun in 3D!" :-) Look for KILLZONE 3 in 3D coming out in February 2011.
