Must Watch: New Featurette For ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY!

Wow. This featurette (a must watch) really nails it home for me - ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY is looking extremely good.

The visuals are amazing, the message that director Gareth Edwards is emphasizing is bang-on, and I am a sucker for behind the scenes shots. I'm looking forward to some original material being exploited in the STAR WARS universe.

"It’s a style that is unlike any other Star Wars movie," Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said. She recounted seeing director Gareth Edwards, camera on his shoulder, testing shots guerilla-style as a sign that this movie would be different. "I think that’s what’s so amazing about his style," she said. "This is going to be an incredibly immersive experience when you see Rogue One."

Director Gareth Edwards recounted traveling to New York for the voiceover session with Skywalker Sound’s Matthew Wood. When Jones delivered the line, “POWER,” Edwards summed up their reactions succinctly. "We looked at each other and had nerdgasms."

Yes. James Earl Jones returns as the voice of Darth Vader. You can't get any better than that! One of cinema's greatest villains (if not the best) will be back in all his glory.

New BTS Video And The New Extended Trailer For AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

Take a look at the new extended trailer for Joss Whedon's AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON which features some new shots AND a cool 2 minute Behind The Scenes (BTS) video of the massive production.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the production value in this thing. There's nothing like a huge budget movie delivering the goods on the screen and with the confidence that Marvel has with it's franchise pedigrees I can see ULTRON topping the original both critically and financially.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
Marvel Studios presents AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, the epic follow-up to the biggest Super Hero movie of all time. When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. Must Watch: Clips And BTS From EDGE OF TOMORROW

Ok - first things first. I saw the trailer for EDGE OF TOMORROW in IMAX 3D and it sucked. Instant headache. I am REALLY hoping that this isn't the case for the whole movie - that this was just a rush job to get the trailer out on time. Or, that it was a theatrical projection error. Because the more I see of this movie the more I really want to love it.

Check the movie clips (visual and some minor plot and character relationship spoilers) and the Behind The Scenes (BTS) clips (visual spoilers) to see what I mean. First of all, I like Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt in general but I am really impressed with the level of practical effects being employed along with visual effects! I think this will translate to a believable experience. Yet another reason why I hope they didn't blow the 3D conversion.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
The epic action of “Edge of Tomorrow” unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Major William Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

EDGE OF TOMORROW opens on June 6 in 3D, IMAX 3D and flat. Here's hoping for a good conversion.

MUST WATCH: New Performance Capture BTS Clip From DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES!

Wow - I love this! Take a look at how far technology has come - even since AVATAR - when it comes to the performance capture of actor's facial expressions. This Behind The Scenes (BTS) clip features a split screen approach to showing the on set action and what the end result is after digital post production.

Of course this whole movement has been spearheaded by a very capable actor (Andy Serkis) AND the artists behind the creation of these performances.

The digital work that's being done is of course married up with the industry leading native 3D produced from 3ality Technica's native 3D rigs. Man - can't wait to see all the technical execution done on this movie! I think I'll have to see it twice within a weekend; once with my Apes fanboy cap on and once from a purely technical view.

Anyway - please enjoy the work in this clip. I've watched it several times now and will continue to do ad nauseam - I like it that much.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth's dominant species.

DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES opens on July 11.

Bryan Singer Talks Native 3D On Set Of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST !

Here's a quick tour of one of the sets from X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST given to us by director Bryan Singer. He's amped up about shooting in native 3D (using 3ality Technica rigs, Alexa Ms and Leica lens - my friend John Harper is the stereographer) and the cutting edge technology that's in his employ for this epic movie.

The set is very impressive with intricate work done for a fine level of detail. The lighting and green screening is on a large scale as well, so I expect "The Monastary" scene to be accordingly magnificent.

Singer looks right at home in the middle of this large scale effort - and I'm going to look right at home in the theater audience watching it!!

The ultimate X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the species across two time periods in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. The beloved characters from the original "X-Men" film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, in an epic battle that must change the past – to save our future.

MUST WATCH: Awesome New Intro Clip For NEED FOR SPEED!

Check this clips guys - and the cars therein. WOW. Gotta love the shots and stunts these guys are pulling off just in this alone. No need to say too much here - just WATCH.

MUST WATCH: New IMAX Featurette For Cuaron's GRAVITY, New BTS Shots!

If you've been living under a rock the past year then perhaps you have an excuse but otherwise you should be well aware of the 3D event of the year: Alfonso Cuaron's GRAVITY.

The weight of this movie (if you'll pardon the pun) is staggering. The realism. The extended shots. The effects. The 3D. So when Cuaron says he's been working years on this project, he means he has been working YEARS. And it shows.

The behind the scenes images feature Sandra Bullock and George Clooney decked out in their space suits with Bullock in a couple of underwater shots. It seems Cuaron and his team used water to simulate the weightlessness of space in some capacity. I'm not entirely sure - but it makes sense.

The featurette is from IMAX so obviously it will tout the format as a stellar way of seeing the movie and I agree. Seek out the largest 3D screen possible in your area and nail down tickets because I'm almost certain you'll want to go see this thing again.

You MAY want to avoid looking at how Cuaron has done some of these shots as they could conceivably affect the magic of the movie. Not for me, but perhaps some may feel that way so proceed with caution. Personally I love behind the scenes shots and featurettes! Perhaps it's the filmmaker in me. :-)

Here's the storyline for the movie:

Watch: New Behind The Scenes Featurette for THOR: THE DARK WORLD

Check the new behind the scenes (BTS) featurette for THOR: THE DARK WORLD! The clips include some BTS shots but not the quantity or duration I would prefer. Undoubtedly there are more coming though and this is a good appetizer! Packed with segments from key cast interviews that will surely be included in the boxed disc releases for home entertainment next year, it shows off the impact that the scale of the movie is having on the stars. Or it's pure marketing fluff. :-) I'm leaning more towards the epic scale knowing how Marvel justly treats it's properties.

It's also interesting to see how Tom Hiddleston's character Loki has evolved into arguably the most popular in the franchise, and that's an impressive feat given the movie titles all have THOR in them! His appearance at Comic-con this year has helped seal that deal I think.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s Thor and Marvel’s The Avengers, Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Want To See A New HERCULES BTS Photo? Direct From The Rock!

Straight away - I don't know if HERCULES will be in 3D, but I'm guessing that they're going to have to convert it to 3D in post to effectively combat Renny Harlin's HERCULES 3D starring Kellan Lutz which is also due in 2014. One thing is certain, that's not a 3D rig in the photo.

Either way, you have to enjoy Dwayne Johnson's tweets, especially when the man is on set. That's the case with his current project HERCULES which is currently shooting. Yes it's being directed by Brett Ratner and I've never been a great fan of his, but the RUSH HOUR movies made a mint (and were ok). I'm just not tuned into his work.

Back to Johnson - he seems to always have a great catchphrase with his set tweets too. Take the one that came with this photo:

Must Watch: Behind The Scenes Of PACIFIC RIM: "Legendary Set Visit" - Visual Spoilers!

PACIFIC RIM is an amazing movie. I will review it soon and post it on MarketSaw ASAP for you, but Tim's review is here. My review will have a lower score - though not by much. I felt the 3D was good but had some serious flaws in a few scenes (not the whole movie). Definitely see it in 3D though - there is no question that it's the way to go - the bigger the screen the better.

PACRIM is an original movie. Sure giant sea monsters have been done before, but nothing on this scale or with such a human element. The kaijus and jaegers are magificent. I have to go again. It's my favorite movie of the summer and of the year thus far. THE GREAT GATSBY is my highest rated, but PACRIM is popcorn baby! My favorite. I just wish it was shot in native 3D.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes - a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) - who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Must Watch: Production Diary 11 For THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG !!

Without further delay here is the next Production Diary from Peter Jackson's THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG. Thank you Mr. Jackson for the time and effort it takes to get these done with your busy schedule and mighty task in hand! I love how he will shoot these things with no worries about having food stains on his shirt. Got to love the down to earth nature of Mr. Jackson!

Watch PACIFIC RIM Featurettes! Let's Take A Look...

I know what you're asking yourself: "How many trailers and featurettes should I watch without spoiling myself too badly?" And justifiably so. Yes, there are visual spoilers in these and background stories as to how things work which could be deemed 'spoilery'. It is totally your call to watch them or not, but so far I have sat through them and don't feel as though my experience will be lessened by it.

I've been holding off posting these until we get a couple to discuss and now's the time to start. Just amazing stuff! Especially the dual cockpit and how that works. But I won't get into it here - have a watch and then we can discuss if needed in the comments.

Watch: Six Minutes Of Behind The Scenes Footage From IRON MAN 3!

I love behind the scenes footage. I can't get enough of it. Maybe because it minimizes spoilers yet still gets you into the action before a movie is released. Maybe because I love filmmaking in general and you can see the cameras, director and crew in action. Want to see what's green screen and what's not? How the practical effects are done? Watch these BTS clips from IRON MAN 3.

Slight warning - there are some visual spoilers in this, but of so very brief. I had no trouble watching it, but fair warning to you.

First Look: Jamie Foxx As Electro! Leaked Set Pics From THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

Wow! Jamie Foxx looks like a villain to be reckoned with in these shots and they aren't from the movie - just BTS (behind-the-scenes).

Electro is one of my favorite bad guys from the Spider-man menagerie of mayhem so I'm thrilled that he's looking so good here. I thought The Lizard wasn't quite up to standard in the first Marc Webb reboot, so I'm on the edge of my seat to see what he's doing here in the second.

This second effort from Webb is not being shot in native 3D due to Webb's desire to shoot in anamorphic format. It'll be post converted into stereoscopic 3D. I'm not on board with that decision as I thought his use of the Red Epics and 3ality Technica's rigs in the first go was stellar.

New Behind The Scenes Footage And Concept Art From THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

Peter Jackson is at it again and gives us some footage from that March Live Event that Tim covered for us. Warner Bros. has allowed about 6 minutes of the event to be given to us and so have a look below. The concept art that I screen capped are labeled as: LITTLE RIVERS - Mirkwood Forest Gully Concept V. 13, and Mirkwood ERIDOR Wide Concept, respectively.

Thanks to everyone who tuned into our Live Event last week. I’ve never done anything like that before, and I was pretty nervous. Hope it was ok.

If you saw it, it was a pretty accurate picture of what life is like at the moment. Jabez and I sit in that editing room all day, every day, editing the second Hobbit movie, and we actually start on the third next week! A lot of that movie was shot nearly a year ago, so I’m looking forward to seeing it come alive, shot by shot in the cutting room. It’s like assembling one of those complex 2000 piece jigsaw puzzles.

For us, this is really the being of 2013, so I look forward to posting a bunch more stuff as we work through the year.

I think that an edited version of the Live Event is being made available over at the official Hobbit site, and Warner Bros have kindly let me post a 6 min excerpt here, to give everyone who missed it a sense of what it was like.

HOBBIT: DESOLATION OF SMAUG LIVE EVENT

Hey all, Tim here with some thoughts on what I got to see today from THE HOBBIT: DESOLATION OF SMAUG Live Event Preview that happened at 3 PM EST. The Live Event was hosted by Peter Jackson for about an hour, and it included some a sneak peek of the film plus some behind the scenes. For those of you who were unable to catch the event it will was recorded and will be rebroadcast for you to watch at your own leisure starting March 27^th and will be available until May 24^th as the fine text says "Content may not be available after 5/24/13."

What did we see? Well in case there are those of you out there who want to remain spoiler free I will put the spoilerish stuff up in a block that you'll have to highlight in order to read. However, for the non-spoilerish stuff here are my thoughts and some interesting information divulged in during the event:
It started with Peter Jackson and James Nesbitt giving a tour of their post-production facility, including the mo-cap room, editing rooms, and the concept art on the walls. Jackson took questions sent in ahead of time via Twitter, with some video questions that were required to be submitted by March 19^th, and answered some live questions coming off Twitter. A lot of Behind the Scenes footage was shown from the film, and with that some incomplete shots right out of the editing room. These shots gave us our first looks at some new characters in the film including Luke Evans (Bard), Evangeline Lilly (Tauriel), Stephen Fry (Master of Laketown), and the returning character Legolas played by Orlando Bloom. There was also a special guest appearance by Stephen Colbert, who asked Peter a question regarding the movie. Peter in return had a question for him. Jackson showed a bit of the editing process by showing multiple takes of Martin Freeman (Bilbo) delivering a line. He showed which takes they chose in an edited sequence, which included a neat intro to Bard.
Now for the spoiler stuff. Highlight the white block below to read:

SPOILERS... There was a full scene shown between Gandalf (Ian McKellan) and Radagast (Sylvester McCoy) where they investigate the tombs of Dol Godur. It starts with Gandalf investigating by himself and then jumping at the appearance of Radagast. They converse for a bit as we see the expense of the tombs. This would have been a scene in the first movie before it was moved to the second with the decision to have three movies.

Some of the BTS footage that showed possible spoiler stuff was exchanges between Legolas and his father Thanduil (Lee Pace), Tauriel and Legolas fighting orcs, the barrel riding scenes, Bard running around Laketown, etc. There was a lot of footage that went by fast and require a second watching. However, Laketown and the Elven Kingdom of Mirkwood should be great sets. We also saw a small bit of Bilbo in the Lonely Mountain wading through mounds of gold... but no Smaug.

END SPOILERS. Breath easy, and relax. Jackson revealed that we can expect a trailer in the Summer. I know that seems so far away, but it's so that they can complete effects shots.

New Trailer For One Direction's ID3D Concert - Documentary

One Direction has taken off in only one direction - straight up. Naturally it makes sense that they would follow in the footsteps of Justin Bieber and Katy Perry and release a 3D movie featuring some behind the scenes footage as well as on stage.

But it's not just any documentary. It is being helmed by Morgan Spurlock (SUPERSIZE ME) so you can expect some interesting stories, surprises and above all entertainment. My daughter will definitely be looking forward to seeing this!

ID3D opens on August 30. More when I get it...

Hobbit Featurette: The Making Of The Trolls And The Giant Cavern Of The Goblin King! Friday Numbers Are In!

Take a look at this very cool featurette of how Peter Jackson's creative geniuses have crafted the very realistic trolls and Goblin King Caverns in THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY.

I thought the scenes mentioned in this featurette were among the best of the movie and certainly bears the time it takes to watch this thing.

My review of THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY is coming later today (Sunday) so stay tuned.

World wide reaction to the movie has been amazingly good: Friday totals are in at $37.5 million pointing at a $100 million weekend - easily a new record. A $200 million worldwide tally is certainly possible as well by Monday morning!

Well here's another must watch production video from Peter Jackson for THE HOBBIT. Needless to say when these things drop, it's something you ignore everything else for and enjoy.

This video is all about the post production mayhem that Jackson and his team is going through to get THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY ready for us in December.

Here's the movie's storyline:
THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY follows title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.
