International 3D And Advanced Imaging Society Announced Top Nominees For 3D Awards

Congratulations to all, especially our friends over at 3ality Technica for their Century Award and Pixar for their Wheatstone Award! Unfortunately I will not be able to make it this year to the award ceremony, but I'm looking forward to seeing some of the highlights soon afterward!

The International 3D and Advanced Imaging Society announced its top nominated 3D movies for the 2014 Creative Arts Awards Ceremony to be held January 28th at Warner Bros. Studios.

The top live action nominees include “Gravity” (Warner Bros.), “The Great Gatsby” (Warner Bros.), “The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug” (MGM/New Line Cinema), “Oz the Great and Powerful” (Walt Disney Pictures), and “Star Trek: Into Darkness” (Paramount Pictures).

In the animation category, the top nominees include “Frozen” (Walt Disney Animation Studios), “The Croods” (DreamWorks Animation), “Despicable Me 2” (Universal Pictures), “Monster’s University” (Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar), and “Turbo” (DreamWorks Animation.

“2013 was a year 3D’s blockbuster box office success was matched by creative and technical brilliance,” said Buzz Hays of the True Image Company and Society Awards Chairman. “The level of quality across the board is stunning,” he added.

The Society will present its gold Lumiere™ statuettes to winners in 20 categories selected by ballot from 460 of the Society’s professional voting members.

Pixar will receive the Society’s Sir Charles Wheatstone Award for creative excellence in 3D story telling.

The Society’s annual Century Award will be presented to 3ality Technica. The company’s camera systems have been behind some of this year’s biggest blockbusters including “The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug,” “The Great Gatsby,” “Stalingrad,” and “Oz the Great and Powerful.”

“The Century Award is annually presented to those individuals and companies who have indelibly left their mark on 3D’s first century,” commented Society Awards Chairman, Buzz Hays. “From 3D movies to television, 3ality Technica and its founder Steve Schklair have been a core part of paving the way to 3D’s worldwide success,” he added.

More than 150 entries were judged by the Society’s voters for this year’s honors. Submissions were received from all around the world, including: the U.S., China, Japan, Korea, the U.K., Canada, Germany, France, Belgium, Italy, and Taiwan.

Toronto International Stereoscopic 3D Conference Converges Sept 20-23 With Yours Truly!

I've received and accepted a moderator role at the Toronto International Stereoscopic 3D Conference this month from the 20th to the 23rd. The conference is a great influencer in Canada and the world in the S3D industry. This year they are reaching out with special screenings, top line talent complete with an exceptional workshop on Quality in Stereo-3D and a masterclass held by Demetri Portelli (47 RONIN, HUGO).

I'll be helming the 6pm session on September 22st entitled: 3D CREATION ON A 2D BUDGET with panelists April Mullen (DEAD BEFORE DAWN 3D), Eric Tessier (5150 ELM'S WAY) and Alex Farrell (Director, Media and Entertainment, RBC Commercial Markets). This also ties nicely into what I'm doing with my own passion production, DREADLOCK.

The Toronto International Stereoscopic 3D Conference is an acclaimed unique international gathering of creative, scientific and business minds discussing, discovering and inspiring innovation in “Stereoscopic 3D” Cinema. Brought together by the 3D Film Innovation Consortium (3D FLIC), the Conference offers the highest quality discussions on the creative, scientific and business challenges and possibilities of Stereoscopic 3D.

The 3D Shorts Programme consists of six Canadian and international short stereoscopic films, animations and videos produced in the last two years. This selection of stereoscopic shorts was specially curated for the 2nd Toronto International Stereoscopic 3D Conference by 3D cinema scholar Sanja Obradovic.

3net 3D Television Production Guide Available for Download

Featuring stereoscopic expertise from the top producers and technical advisors of the company and its corporate ownership, The 3D Production Guide has now been made freely available to the public today via multiple websites, it was announced today on behalf of 3net and its corporate partners by Tom Cosgrove, President & CEO of 3net.

"One of the core missions of 3net and our parent companies is to shepherd the emergence and proliferation of 3D television by combining our resources, expertise and experience to provide the most extensive tools and resources available today to the world’s 3D production community,” said Cosgrove. “The hands-on knowledge garnered by our collective companies provides an unprecedented resource - not only our current production partners - but for all of those involved in this dynamic medium.”

The 50-page illustrated manual includes detailed information garnered from the combined 50 years of experience in the area of 3D from those who contributed to its creation. The guide outlines in detail all of the facets involved in creating top-quality 3D content for television, from initial workflow planning, to production, post production, stereographic correction and final delivery.

The 3D Production Guide is a living document outlining current best practices in the area of 3D production for television. It is the result of extensive contributions from the 3D experts of 3net’s partner companies Discovery Communications, Sony Corporation and IMAX Corporation.

The guide was authored by Bert Collins, Josh Derby, Bruce Dobrin, Don Eklund, Buzz Hays, Jim Houston, George Joblove and Spencer Stephens, with Bert Collins and Josh Derby serving as editors. It will be constantly updated and amended as the dynamics of 3D television production continue to evolve.
