CinemaCon 2011: Disney Screenings - CARS 2, ON STRANGER TIDES and THE AVENGERS

I just saw 26 minutes of footage from CARS 2 and 19 minutes from PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES in extremely well projected 3D by MasterImage. The movies look outstanding.

I can't divulge too much info but CARS 2 looks to be a better outing than the first in my mind. Lots of action and well, anything with Michael Caine is awesome anyway!

POTC looks like a ton-o-fun too. I saw a very ingenious escape scene that I can't describe to you right now, but it is worth the price of admission in itself!

Oh and I saw much more of Blackbeard and he is going to be the perfect villain in the movie! LOVED his scenes.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Rob Marshall gave the clip's intro in person.

I also saw a sizzler reel for THE AVENGERS! Let me tell you the whole audience was open mouthed in watching it. Several stars were interviewed for the clip like Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johannson along with director Joss Whedon who you could tell is so excited to be working on the picture. This thing is going to be MAMMOTH!

Check out the new CARS 2 trailer from Pixar! While the movie has seemed to improve somewhat from the first look I have seen, there hasn't been a defining moment yet for me to think: "YES! Gotta see this." You know? Sure it looks visually stunning like all Pixar movies. Still...

I expect maybe a twist like a double agent or an underwater scene like in THE SPY WHO LOVED ME. But they haven't shown us anything yet. What do you think? Is this Pixar release up to par - even after John Lasseter has weaved renovation magic on the story?

You Want More TOY STORY? How About A Clip From A New Short Called HAWAIIAN VACATION!

Anytime we get to see anything from Pixar is a treat, but this short has the characters of TOY STORY so of course this is a must see.

This time around it is a clip from their upcoming short entitled HAWAIIAN VACATION that will pre-roll in front of CARS 2 this summer.

Here is what you're about to see:
Set in new owner Bonnie's bedroom, "Hawaiian Vacation" features Woody (voice of Tom Hanks) and Buzz (voice of Tim Allen) and the rest of the favourite Toy Story 3 toys as they create the ultimate Hawaiian vacation for Ken (voice of Michael Keaton) and Barbie (voice of Jodi Benson).

It seems Ken badly miscalculated their travel arrangements, so the gang has to create a dream getaway in Bonnie's Midwestern bedroom - in the middle of winter. Toy Story Hawaiian Vacation also features the voices of Joan Cusack, Wallace Shawn, Don Rickles, Estelle Harris, Blake Clark, Bonnie Hunt, Timothy Dalton, Kristen Schaal, Jeff Garlin and John Ratzenberger.

Here's what director Gary Rydstrom had to say about it (from EW):
"We wanted to figure out a story that would include everybody, which is crazy because it is under six minutes. It takes place in Bonnie’s room — Woody, Buzz and Rex and everybody is in on it. Ken wants to take Barbie on a perfect vacation to Hawaii by stowing away in Bonnie’s backpack, but they get left behind in the middle of winter while she goes off without them. Ken kind of screwed up. [Laughs] Barbie probably does all the planning, and he tried to plan this one."

Pixar Starts Its CARS 2 Engines With Official Poster, Image And Storyline!!

**SAME DAY UPDATE: Pixar is revealing the first official trailer for CARS 2 tomorrow morning (Nov 16) at 8am Pacific on their Facebook page and webpage!!

Finally we get the goods and begin the march to the next Pixar release, CARS 2! Pixar has released an official poster, image and storyline and the anticipation is starting to mount.

Actors lending their voices to the stereoscopic 3D animation include: Owen Wilson, John Ratzenberger, Tony Shalhoub, Cheech Marin, Bonnie Hunt and Larry The Cable Guy. John Lasseter directs along with Brad Lewis as co-director and Denise Ream producing.

Pixar chooses themes that resonate with the world so well... Aging (UP), Toys (TOY STORY) and of course CARS to name a few. The opportunities are boundless to transcend the original stories with allow us to grow with the characters. Again TOY STORY comes to mind. As cars are toys for big boys - I think it is safe to assume that the appeal is going to be amazing!

3D News Ticker: Cameron Talks AVATAR, TITANIC 3D And CLEOPATRA; PIRANHA 3DD Goes Aja-Less; And The New CARS 2 Teaser Trailer And Art!!

3D news is coming fast and furious now isn't it? Gotta love it. Let's have a look at some of the top stories of today:

- James Cameron talks to the NYTimes about the AVATAR Disc Release, TITANIC 3D and whether or not he will do Sony's CLEOPATRA (he doesn't know). Cameron says: "There’s a Cleopatra project in work, meaning that it’s been in development at Sony. And it’s a subject that’s always fascinated me. So yeah, I’ve been talking to them about it but no decisions have been made. But it sounds hot, doesn’t it? I mean, Angelina Jolie and Cleopatra? To me, that’s like a slam dunk."

Personally I think the CLEOPATRA movie should be produced by Cameron as I am kinda selfishly wanting him to focus on AVATAR or BATTLE ANGEL, but I can clearly see why he wants to do it - the movie would be EPIC.

- Dimension Films has swam the extra mile in getting PIRANHA 3DD into the water for next summer. According to Deadline, they have baited John Gulager (BEAST) to direct the sequel with SAW 3D writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan attached to pen it.

Could this be the next SAW franchise? I would fall resoundingly on the "NO" side of that conversation.

I have to say the movie is shaping up very nicely and I base that statement more on the concept art and story description than the teaser obviously!

Pixar's Highest Grossing Movie Ever? TOY STORY 3!!

They've done it! Pixar has managed to top themselves as TOY STORY 3 just passed the shop's previous top property FINDING NEMO's tally of $868 million worldwide. The third and supposedly 'final' iteration of the TOY STORY franchise has accumulated $895 million thus far and still has plenty of legs left. I am calling it to surpass the $1 billion mark joining ALICE IN WONDERLAND and of course AVATAR in the feat for 2010.

Pixar certainly deserves all the accolades for TOY STORY 3. An amazing piece of storytelling in their fine tradition. Note that FINDING NEMO did perform without the benefit of 3D premiums though.

The next project to be released from Pixar is CARS 2 (June 24, 2011). I have to say that Pixar's success is NOT a trend. It's their status quo! I take it as a GOOD sign that John Lasseter has been recalled from Disney to revisit the story in CARS 2 - it shows they care and will always care about story first.

New Concept Art: Pixar's CARS 2

Jim here. We have what seems to be an artistic story panel for the upcoming stereoscopic 3D Disney/Pixar CARS 2. It was obtained through Disney's Annual Report and via PixarPlanet.

That is Japan's Mt. Fuji in the background (Click to enlarge). They are obviously introducing a new Formula 1 character pictured racing behind Lightning McQueen - speed should definitely be a factor! :-)

The storyline goes like this (WARNING - SOME SPOILERS!):
Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson), his pit team and new pit boss Mater head around the world for the Race of Champions, to take place in five different countries and involve the champions of different disciplines like Formula One and rally driving. First up is a race in Tokyo, starting at Mount Fuji and heading downtown; then there's a German race through the Black Forest; then "Porto Corsa" in Italy, which is based partly on the Monte Carlo Grand Prix; then a 24-hour race around Paris (so somewhat like Le Mans then) and finally a thrilling climax in London, approaching Buckingham Palace (where the guards appear to be Land Rovers).

But all this racing is not the only focus. Mater, who we know from the series of cartoon shorts Mater's Tall Tales (more on that in our blog in a minute) is prone to exaggeration, gets involved in a "Hitchcockian" case of mistaken identity, saves the life of a British secret agent called Finn McMissile (who looks a heck of a lot like an Aston Martin) and becomes embroiled in a huge spy thriller. Only no-one believes him. That too comes to a head at Buckingham Palace.

Along the way there are towtruck-abroad pictures to be taken at the Oktoberfest in Germany (where Mater wears "Materhosen") and harassing the aforementioned Palace Guards.

Brad Lewis (the Producer of Ratatouille - my fav Pixar movie!) is directing and the movie is slated for release June 24th, 2011. I have a great feeling about this one!!

3D Animation IS The Standard Now...

**UPDATE (April 9th): Confirmed. John Lasseter of Disney has stated that all future Pixar movies will indeed be in 3D!!

Well folks GREAT news out of Disney. After the excitement of the Miley Cyrus / Bolt announcement the same press release goes on to note some extremely exciting 3D releases for Disney/Pixar. NOTE that Disney/Pixar seems to WILL be going down the same path as Dreamworks Animation in that all of their major tentpoles are seemingly in 3D. Simply. AWESOME. These movies are of course ON TOP OF the already announced Toy Story trilogy being in 3D (yes, re-released volumes 1 and 2 with a brand new 3 in 3D). Check it out:
