Marvel's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY took in another $16m this weekend for it's third non-consecutive, weekend box office crown. That makes $280m so far with $305m forecast domestically. Worldwide GOTG has taken $554m and counting.
I've seen this movie three times already, once with my daughter who I wanted to introduce to the brand as potentially her generation's STAR WARS. I feel the movie is that important.
Audiences shelled out $12m for TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES' second placeshowing - another 3D movie. I haven't seen this yet, but hope to in the coming weeks. It dropped 30% from last weekend and has accumulated a nice $162m thus far.
SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR has bottomed out already and has only a fraction of what the original made. I feel for Robert Rodriguez who I admire as a filmmaker.
Can GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY hold on again for a fourth first place victory? Stay tuned!
Movie patrons shelled out more this past weekend for TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES than Marvel's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY but we'll see what happens as time marches on between these two huge 3D movies. I haven't seen TMNT yet, but it is in the cards.
TMNT took in $65.6 million making it the fourth highest grossing movie opening weekend in August of all time. It's probably the best cross over that producer Michael Bay could have entertained at this level - plenty of brand power and hungry for CGI. Paramount stepped up almost immediately upon word of the solid box office returns to announce a sequel is in the works with an anticipated release date of June 3, 2016.
GUARDIANS remains a juggernaut. It has topped $314 million worldwide already and is still expanding into new markets. Look for standard Tier A returns for Marvel at the end of the run. Another grand slam. DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES just topped $500 million worldwide and will easily top $400 million overseas to pad the final tally. Native 3D doesn't get better than the high standard set by the DAWN 3D team and 3ality Technica! See it again!!
Obviously the world wants more Michael Bay-ish action (TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION just hit $750m worldwide) and they are in for just that with TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES which is being produced by Bay.
These TV spots highlight more of the interactions between the turtles themselves and with reporter April O'Neil (Megan Fox). William Fichtner is in this movie. I repeat, WILLIAM FICHTNER is in this movie. TMNT looks like some good popcorn fun for the family with heavy emphasis on VFX.

Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April O'Neil (Megan Fox) and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick (Will Arnett) to save the city and unravel Shredder's diabolical plan.

Probably the coolest thing about the movie thus far is obviously the creature effects, but also the fact that Leonardo is being voiced by Johnny Knoxville. Oh and William Fichtner. Anything with Fichtner is definitely cool. :-) And I guess having Megan Fox associated with another Michael Bay production is something too.

Tim here, and I can now share with you the teaser trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that I got to see opening night at CinemaCon. I've posted the trailer below.
The trailer shows the earliest footage of the turtles, and for most of it they are a fast blur, that Megan Fox's April O'Neil tries to capture on a phone. And then she gets face-time with the turtles, and the fans finally get to see that precious childhood memory in CGI form. You instantly notice how massive and muscular these turtles are. Enough so for O'Neil to faint at first sight of their real faces without the mask.

Tim here, and I just finished the first day of CinemaCon. There's more that will happen through the rest of the week than today because today was a start day. Mainly registration, plus a opening dinner, but most importantly a presentation from Paramount Studios. Paramount showed exclusive footage from their upcoming line up of films. Stars were on hand for the presentations such as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (Hercules), Will Arnett and guest David Cross (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) entered in on segways, and finally Mark Wahlberg, his daughter, and upcoming stars Nicola Peltz and Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction).
I can't go into too much detail about the footage seen, but all these films are being released in Stereoscopic 3D. This means that all these movies will be pretty big at the box office. Hercules was more or less a new trailer, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was the teaser trailer that's coming out this Thursday morning. The most amount of footage shown was for Transformers: Age of Extinction, which looks like it's bigger than any of the previous Transformers movies.
The footage we saw showcased a good deal of the beginning of the film that sets up the story. We see the relationship between Wahlberg's character and his daugher played by Nicola Peltz. He's a character the audience is instantly going to connect with and Wahlberg looks like he has fun with the role. We got to see plenty of explosions and destruction caused by the Transformers and the humans fighting them.The VFX for the film already look spectacular as we likely were seeing rough drafts or uncompleted shots (some shots still had green screen), and the movie could be the biggest in the franchise. It helps having a star like Wahlberg. Michael Bay wasn't in attendence because he was busy working on the the film.
In regards to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles teaser trailer it was pretty action packed. You'll be able to check it out later this week, but the advance preview did assure that I can tell you that it will feature the CGI turtles front and center. They look pretty massive standing in front of Megan Fox, who plays April O'Neil. Hercules will also be an action packed film, and with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson at the film's center it should be a fun thrill ride.
Overall it was a great opening day. Sadly none of those presentations were in 3D, but I did check out a demonstration from Real D about their TrueImage technology that I'll write about later in the week. Also, MasterImage has their new MI-Horizon3D system which I got to check out so I'll write about that later as well.
