Jaw Dropping New Trailer For Ridley Scott's EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS !

Wow. Impressive trailer. I'm really looking forward to seeing this movie as there are few filmmakers that can capture a true story within an epic and Ridley Scott is one. GLADIATOR is one of my all time favorites. The VFX look ultra realistic which is saying something given the subject matter. Parting water and making it look realistic is one heckuva challenge.

EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS was shot in native 3D using 3ality Technica's TS-5 rigs and SIP with Red Epic cameras. This movie is going to look AMAZING. James Goldman (OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL, PROMETHEUS) is the stereographer.

Here's the storyline:
From acclaimed director Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Prometheus) comes the epic adventure "Exodus: Gods and Kings," the story of one man's daring courage to take on the might of an empire. Using state of the art visual effects and 3D immersion, Scott brings new life to the story of the defiant leader Moses (Christian Bale) as he rises up against the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses (Joel Edgerton), setting 400,000 slaves on a monumental journey of escape from Egypt and its terrifying cycle of deadly plagues.

EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS opens on December 12.

Sigourney Weaver Returning For More AVATAR Sequels - But NOT As Augustine!

I had anticipated a twist in how Sigourney Weaver would be brought back to life in the sequels - this is sci-fi after all, so why not a different character? It makes sense. Perhaps a part of Ewya (the Na'vi "God" of Pandora)? Perhaps representing Ewya? Hmmm.

The news is exciting as it kind of delineates official communication about the AVATAR sequels from Cameron and the studio. The statement was made by Cameron and 20th Century Fox Monday.

Anyway, here's what James Cameron had to say bringing this to light:
"Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made ‘Aliens. We’re good friends who’ve always worked well together, so it just feels right that she’s coming back for the Avatar sequels. Her character of Grace Augustine, as fans know, died in the first movie, so she’s playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films. We’re both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration."

Yes, Cameron said sequels - plural. Weaver will be playing this new character through at least 2 of the 3 upcoming movies it seems.

More info when I get it!

AVATAR 2, 3 and 4 are slate for release in December 2016, 2017 and 2018 respectively. For all of our AVATAR news, click here. Thanks Morka for the heads up :-)

Sigourney Weaver: James Cameron Will Shoot AVATAR 2, 3 And 4 Concurrently

We have all heard that James Cameron will be shooting AVATAR 2 & 3 back to back and that the man himself hinted at a fourth movie to be thrown in the mix - well now it seems that the hint was true as it has been confirmed by someone who should know: Sigourney Weaver.

Weaver was asked about her upcoming slate of projects (unfortunately precious little direct quotes):
She goes right into a new Christopher Durang play for a short run at Lincoln Center. Then she films Avatar 2, 3, and 4 with James Cameron. That’s right: they’re making three sequels to the blue 3D phenom all at the same time. Weaver says she has no idea how long it will take, or how it’s going to work. “I just show up,” she said.

There you have it. When James Cameron said he was in the AVATAR business, he meant it.

Think about what this means. The director of the top two movies of all time is now preparing to unleash not one but three sequels to his number one hit. Don't forget this guy's track record with sequels. So imagine just how crazy this is going to get! Finally we have a series of films from him that will rival STAR WARS.

Interesting to hear that Sigourney will be in ALL the AVATAR movies. That in itself is a bit of a spoiler...

I'll have more soon as pre-production ramps up on the movies. Up until now, there simply has been nothing to report as he had the smallish task of diving solo to the bottom of the world for the first time ever. Stay tuned! It's about to get really hot around here...

James Cameron Update!!

Hey guys - time to check in and see what James Cameron has been up to lately - other than furiously preparing for shooting AVATAR 2 and 3 back to back that is...

Cameron has spoken out a couple of times recently and made some waves - probably of most importance is that AVATAR 2 may have elements of a prequel involved! Yes you read that right - it also simultaneously explains why Sigourney Weaver makes a return to the franchise.

Of course this could all be make up over the real story but until I hear from my sources to the contrary, it looks fairly solid as it came from the man himself (at Popular Mechanics Award Ceremonies):

Sigourney is giving you the award tonight, and she’s supposed to be in Avatar 2, despite her character dying in the first Avatar.
Did I say she was going to be in Avatar 2? [Grins.]

She said she was.
Well, I don’t want to disabuse her of that fantasy. But have you ever heard of nonlinear storytelling? A lot happens on that planet before she shows up, and before Jake shows up to join her. She’s there for fifteen years ahead of time. I don’t know, but I wouldn’t jump to conclusions. And I’ve already said way too much about Avatar 2 and 3 here and there, but people piece it together like those voice cameos and tell the whole story!

Okay, I just wanted to make sure it wasn’t like what they did to Ripley when she died.
Okay, here’s the deal. When you have a science-fiction series, a science-fiction franchise, you’re never dead, unless your DNA is expunged from the universe. And then there’s always time travel!

Cameron also dishes on Disney's new AVATARLAND:

You’re also working on Avatar at Disney World. What’s going to happen there? What would you like to see?
We’re going to meet and discuss it. They have big plans for it. They want to do a land, a number of different attractions, maybe a flight attraction, and retail outlets, things like that, make a whole environment of it, a themed experience. You would feel like you’re on Pandora. So I think my job and what I look forward to doing is making sure it’s consistent with Na’vi culture, with the themes and values of Avatar, and the next films as well. And they seem very open to that.

Are you going to be full force in Avatar world for the foreseeable future, or will you still be able to dabble here and there on other projects?
Not for the next five years! My next film, films are Avatar 2 and 3.
Further, Cameron antes in on the so-called "anti-3d backlash":

It seems like with every blockbuster 3D movie, the reports are that more and more people are opting for the 2D version. This happened with 'Pirates 4.' After the good will of 'Avatar,' how do you win back an audience that feels tricked?
I don't think that's the case at all. I don't think the audience feels tricked, I think the audience occasionally feels like they're not getting their money's worth when they go to see a film where they're paying for a premium ticket price and it's sort of sloppily converted to 3D and it's not delivering. And that usually happens because the studio imposes 3D on the filmmaker and the filmmaker says, "Look I'm making the movie, you all do with it what you want." Which is really a bad attitude because if you're not shooting for 3D, it's not going to look as good. So I'm not in favor of conversion. I think that's potentially a way to do minor damage to the marketplace.

So is there a backlash?
I think this whole story is trumped up by the media. You know, they built it up, it's this fantastic new thing, and now we're going to tear it down.

You seem frustrated by this. Are you frustrated by this story?
No, no. I'm not frustrated at all. I think it's a natural course of the evolution of any new thing. But I think people need to understand and remember: 3D revenues for movies have grown 40 percent a year, year over year, for three years. And are projected to do that next year. This business is not going away. You're not going to put that toothpaste back in the tube. We've gone from one percent of the market four years ago to 21 percent of movie revenues now. So, I think it's being very broadly accepted on a global basis -- much more so internationally than domestically. So, 3D is going to be with us forever. The question is: When does it reach the same levels of broadcast? We've got about 110 camera systems right now that are out all of the time -- the trucks are out all of the time. We've done 160 sporting events and it goes up 20 of new ones every couple of months. So that's now starting to explode.

You mentioned that you're not in favor of conversion, but you are converting 'Titanic.' Was that process more difficult than you expected? Are you happy with the results?
I expected it to be really hard to get high quality results. And that proved to be accurate. Including the mastering of the film and the 3D conversion, we're spending 18 million dollars in one year -- and it will barely be done in time, in February -- to do it up to a standard equal to having shot it in 3D. Which, of course, would have been my first choice. Short of having a time machine available, I don't know a way to do that.

Will we see other films from the James Cameron catalog converted?
We are exploring a new market here for classic library titles that are much beloved films that may or may not have a new life in the theatrical marketplace. We're just going to have to see. I mean, do the numbers support the idea of a 'Terminator 2' or 'Aliens'? I don't know, those would be cool movies to convert. But I don't know -- we have to see how much we make off of 'Titanic.'

So a nice little update from an obviously very busy man! Stay tuned for more...

AVATAR 2: Sigourney Weaver Says She Thinks She Will Be Back

Sigourney Weaver says that she will be back for AVATAR 2 and from all she says it makes sense. If you have seen AVATAR then you know that there are reasons why she wouldn't be back, but there are also reasons why she COULD come back.

"Don't worry, I will be back," she said of Avatar 2, confirming the hint that she dropped nearly a year ago, "Jim [Cameron] says no one ever dies in science fiction. He's told me the stories for the next two movies and I have to say that they're absolutely wonderful and there's a real treat in store. Now we just have to make them."

Weaver also said that they have plans to shoot AVATAR 2 and 3 back to back starting next year which perfectly fits into what we currently know. More when I get it!

Sigourney Weaver All But Confirms Her Involvement In AVATAR 2: She Ain't Dead Yet...

Jim here. Another morsel of information has been added to the mix for AVATAR 2: Signourney Weaver is seriously hinting that she will be in the sequel to AVATAR - even though she supposedly died in the original!

The story comes from AICN where a reader sent in a link to a French video where Weaver discloses the info. Weaver can speak French too. The interesting part is after the 3:30m mark and you can hear her in English.

Anyone who has watched the movie knows that she didn't seem to die, but rather "she is with Eywa". Her consciousness or "soul" has transferred to the tree of souls.

This opens up many, MANY scenarios
now that we know that there is a real chance she is returning. Will she be teamed up with Eywa somehow? Very interesting! She does back track a bit though by saying she can't promise anything, but the info is a bombshell of sorts.

Here is
the clip! Thanks to Shawn for the headsup :-) Working on some more AVATAR 2 news shortly!

EXCLUSIVE: GHOSTBUSTERS Going 3D!

Jim here. If you want a tentpole, in your neighborhood, Who ya gonna call? Stereographers!!

Yes - I have word from one of my top sources that a friend of his at a certain well known effects house (I can't say who it is, but their initials are ILM) said that GHOSTBUSTERS 3 is proceeding as planned - but - with the added benefit of stereoscopic 3D!

I am digging for more intel and hopefully will have it soon. As you can tell, I love the franchise - the first is the best of course.

I don't know about you - and maybe you were too young to have enjoyed the first two in theaters, but GHOSTBUSTERS took us by storm! It was infectious and hilarious. Personally, if the script is funny and the originals at least make cameos or more, than I am very happy. I just hope it doesn't suck. I hope the introduction to this generation is at least as successful as the first was.

Sony's Columbia Pictures has Lee Eisneberg and Gene Stupnitsky penning the script. Word has it that Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver are all returning - but I have no intel on that or anything further as of yet.

I would have liked to have heard that conversation around the Reitman holiday table what with Jason Reitman set quite firmly against stereoscopic 3D. Ivan must still carry a lot of weight though - 3D is coming and it is going to be as big as the Stay Puft Marshmellow Man.

Someone has got to pull Jason aside and tell 'em: "I ain't afraid of no depth."
Just sayin'.

@petershall: "The AVATAR buzz is an understatement. That movie was unbelievable."

@dmann11: "Holy effing crap!!! Avatar was FREAKING AWESOME KICK ASS SWEET!!!!!"

@TheGate: "For the record 'Avatar' was worth the $400 million, and no it is not even remotely "vomit inducing".

@gholson: "Spectacular. A visual feast and the new benchmark in cinematic world building."

@chasewhale: "Just finished AVATAR. Special effects were top notch. The movie ran a little long for my likings but I liked it!"

@comingsoonnet" "Okay, about Avatar?.... WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW! Unbelievable... amazing."

@MikePereira21: Was blown away by Avatar! For 150 minutes, I was a kid again. Thank you James Cameron! BTW, the groundbreaking 3D was mindblowing."

@markwalters74: "Just saw AVATAR. Not allowed to talk about it yet. Not allowed to say how it's an amazing visual feast, or that Jimmy C's still got the gift."

@massawyrm: "So I just got back from a movie. It was pretty great...if by pretty great I mean OMFGHOLYF**KINGSH*TOMGOMGOMG. Because that's what it was ... Oh, and if I hear one more "Dances with Wolves" joke I'm gonna throw up in my mouth. Has no one seen DUNE? Because this was DUNE. In a good way ...You have officially been to your last Con in which blue people, spoken Navi and the word "hometree" were absent."

@firstshowing: James Cameron is a freakin' genius! I can't say much but wow, I loved it. #Avatar was phenomenal, pretty much blew me away

@DrewAtHitFix: I think the most accurate way to say it would be OMFGOMFGOMFG. Or words that effect. #avatar

@EDouglasWW: I'll take my chances with Fox legal.... Avatar was amazing, I loved it!

@rejects It's impossible to say that something is a "gamechanger" or that it will "redefine" movies. But I can say that I've seen something I've never seen before. And that I've seen something that shows the potential for the craft of filmmaking in this new century.

@sizemore So *that* was James Cameron's AVATAR. Holy f**king f**k.

@JonTT Avatar = outstanding. Really. Truly. See it. Soon.

@slashfilm I'm not allowed to say anythng about what I thought of Avatar, but saw it in a screening room with neill blomkamp, who didn't sign an NDA. He loved it... I will say this, it's hard to disagree with Neil :)

@LarsenOnFilm First Impression: Avatar. Stronger story than I expected, amazing visuals. Still no need for 3-D though. Full review next week.

@simonpegg Avatar ........................ tweetless. Just tweetless in the best possible way.

@simonpegg Just left the party. The movie is a game changer. Still buzzing. Tweet over.

@johndollin Such a small word to describe a huge film 'EPIC', I entered a dream and didn't want to return. 3D just made it all the more real.

@chasewhale: “Just finished AVATAR. Special effects were top notch. The movie ran a little long for my likings but I liked it!”

@comingsoonnet” “Okay, about Avatar?…. WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW! Unbelievable… amazing.”

@MikePereira21: Was blown away by Avatar! For 150 minutes, I was a kid again. Thank you James Cameron! BTW, the groundbreaking 3D was mindblowing.”

@rejects: “I’m not supposed to talk about Avatar… That said, it was a spectacular experience. Like nothing I’ve seen before.”

Steven Spielberg loved it and "flipped for it".

Here are some reviews that seem to be ignoring the NDA they signed fast off the mark!

Exclusive Source: AVATAR Trailer Coming Soon And What To Expect...

Jim here. Spoke with one of my top sources of AVATAR material and he has some news regarding the upcoming AVATAR promotional material that is due soon.

Here is what he had to say: "Well Jim there are more trailers than I can count on 2 hands. (TV spots) (featurettes) (Ubisoft promo reels) etc, etc, and yes "exclusive" content will be available on avtr.com".

He also confirmed what we have been thinking for some time now - the next trailer will feature "more than 3 lines of dialogue" :-) and further, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver will have heavier exposure as will the Na'vi.

But out of all the news - this is what I find the most interesting: We will see glimpses of future Earth and with the "Story Trailer" in particular we will see some of the "incredible performance that Sam Worthington gives as Jake". Pandora's night life will also play a role.

He reiterated that of course this could all change on a dime given the track record of getting media pieces out to the masses, but this is what he has seen.

As far as when the next trailer will makes its debut: "I have no solid date to give you on the 2nd trailer front other than to say that it is coming *soon*"

We can be pretty sure that this trailer will debut online folks. Keep MarketSaw.com and AVTR.com on your favorite toolbar! This should be GREAT :-)

James Cameron: "Titanic" a "Picnic" Compared to "Avatar"!

Michael here.  James Cameron is set to be inducted this Saturday into the Toronto-based Walk of Fame by Avatar star Sigourney Weaver.

Speaking from Los Angeles, Cameron told The Canadian Press that Avatar is "simultaneously the most vexing and the most rewarding type of production that I've done yet," saying that the complexity of the project makes Titanic "look like a picnic."

"It's this form of pure creation where ... if you want to move a tree or a mountain or the sky or change the time of day, you have complete control over the elements and the production design," Cameron said.

It's always great to read Avatar updates from Cameron. The incredible degree of creative freedom he has on this project--and the ability to keep so many aspects of a shot in flux until the last minute--bodes very well for those of us who can't wait to inhabit a fully realized alternate world on December 18, 2009.

Check out The Canadian Press article for more.

Sigourney Weaver Confirms "Avatar" Character is a Botanist and RUNS the Avatar program on Pandora!

As I exclusively posted, I suspected Sigourney's character in "Avatar", Dr. Grace Augustine was a botanist because, well she works in a biolab on the set - the biggest lab with a control room attached. I won't go into further details as there are spoilers involved, but you can go back to read them here. It's old news that she runs the Avatar program - but it is great to know she is a botanist and where she works.

Weaver has gone on to confirm all of this - here is a quote from her recently:

"The New Yorker declares, however, that she does not intend to reprise the role of Ripley for a fifth Alien movie! (The four were Alien in 1979, Aliens in 1986, Alien³ in 1992, and Alien: Resurrection in 1997.) “No, but I play an equally fascinating character in Avatar, which I’ve been working with James Cameron in New Zealand. It will take a while to come out, but I hope he won’t mind if I tell you that she is a botanist and it’s the kind of terrific woman’s role that only Jim Cameron could write.” (Cameron also directed Weaver in Aliens.)

The actress just can’t contain her excitement about playing Dr Grace Augustine (a “very tough but caring, funny person”) in the upcoming feature by the Oscar-winning director of the mammoth hit Titanic. “She runs the Avatar program on this planet. I’m not really allowed to tell you much except that I think it’s going to be one of the most amazing adventures and experiences any audience will ever have. People aren’t going to want to come out of the theatre. It’s a 3-D experience. It has a lot of fantasy and romance in it, as well as adventure.”

So my sources have been confirmed once again! I still believe that she is the one who actually discovers how to adapt the communication science that native flora and fauna of Pandora use so that humans can use it. This is what my sources and I think, so we could be off lol - but it holds much more water now.

The big thing is, my sources have been confirmed in that Weaver is a botanist. We know she works in the biggest biolab on the planet in a control room - and she runs the Avatar program. Pretty important role to be sure.

Those Avatar chambers must bring back memories for her - however alien they may be to us... :-)

James Cameron's "Avatar" Secrets Revealed: Warning Spoilers !

**UPDATED (March 4th): Just wanted to clarify that until Cameron comes out and states otherwise, the original thought was that "Avatar" would be about 60% CGI. You can see the outdoor green screens here and here; they look ENORMOUS. However, there is a large live action component as well that Cameron must feel deserves the detailed set treatment - mainly interior shots it appears. Also it wouldn't take much to move the Biolabs from inside to the exterior green scene to create the environment. I also wanted to say that we don't know if they are creating life sized plants for this movie - though it would make sense to do so in some cases. Many flora shots would be CGI - my source was referring to "how others had the whole communication thing explained to them" by the powers at be. So whether it is exposed to the audience in a scientific way (sort of how in "Jurassic Park" they explained how they retrieved the DNA from dinosaurs) or whether they plan on "suspending belief" of the audience (i.e. unexplained) remains to be seen. Either way, it is an awesome premise and BEGS my curiosity. One thing is certain - science plays an interesting role in this movie; whether they keep the "theory" behind various communication techniques in a black box or expose it like in Jurassic Park is a guess at this point! My conjecture would be that Grace (Sigourney Weaver) explains it to someone and the audience (of course) listens in. If you want the details, highlight the white text below as it does contain spoilers.

Well I told ya it was coming and here it is.
Exclusive Avatar news you can't get anywhere else. Now a small caveat here: These notes are from a while back and some things may have changed during filming, but what has been noted DID EXIST at one point and these notes are authentic:

Got some VERY interesting news from one of my "Avatar" sources that was involved with getting this 3D motion picture made. AWESOME news in fact. In fact, you may not want to read this as there are definite mini-spoilers in this that may affect your viewing pleasure.

**SPOILERS BELOW** Highlight the white text below to read the contents:

My source was very clear on a number of things including some of the basis for the movie as well as how things looked inside the production buildings:

1. "Avatar" production set:

ON SHIPS:

There were hundreds of workers building the sets for Avatar - MDF was being thrown around like candy to make the sets as realistic as possible - and it was very successful. The transport ships for instance achieved a "matte steel appearance" that was undetectable. Those transport ships look pretty much like the new Battlestar Gallactica transports, but much bigger - like ten times bigger. These sets filled the interior of the set buildings in Wellington - to the rafters. All very real looking and NOT scaled down - it was all life size.

ON THE MESS HALL BUILDING:
This is mainly where the security forces interior scenes were shot. It was large (30 x 30 feet) made to look like steel construction with only a few windows to view the outside world. The feeling that was conveyed with this structure was that the soldiers were trying to bring their own home with them to this alien planet Pandora, and ignore what was happening outside - kind of like what happens when soldiers are deployed overseas today and they set up coffee shops, etc to keep from feeling terribly homesick. On the wall of the mess hall was a large US flag that takes up half the space - something like 10 x 15 feet) - this could indicate political overtones for the movie.

ON OTHER BUILDINGS:
There were other buildings being made that were for science related things. My source only saw these labs from the outside and they seemed very true to their nature. I spoke to some other workers and they said that they look like typical laboratories - one larger lab (about 30 x 30 feet) and one mobile lab (which was about 6 x 15 feet). Sigourney Weaver's character who plays Grace in "Avatar" spends a lot of time in a control room in the bigger one.

2. "Avatar" Story Basics:
ON THE ANIMALS:
Apparently the animals can communicate with the plants of Pandora, but my source was kind of hazy on that. Not only that, but the native Na'vi inhabitants take their own hair and weave it into the hair of Pandora's animals and can communicate that way to them!

ON THE PLANTS:
Many workers were talking about how they are using LED lights to show how plants "talk" to other plants on the planet. They use these lights to show how electrons move back and forth between plants through their root system. Again - my source didn't know much more than that. However, if you examine the plants in the photo here - you can see the luminosity that is being spoken of that seems to be present not only in the plants but also in the Na'vi natives of Pandora.

ON THE AVATARS:
A lot of speculation was taking place on the set about how the Avatar chambers work. This is where humans link up with their native avatars to kind of take over their bodies. The chambers were really very cool and if you can picture the cryo chambers in the Alien movies, take those and put them upright with a darker appearance. I suspect that Sigourney Weaver's Grace plays a key role in discovering the crucial communication methods and applying them to humans.

**SPOILERS ABOVE** Highlight the white text above to read the contents:

One can see a progression here of humans encountering this awesome alien communication system and then taking that idea, studying how it is done in the labs and then applying it to human to Na'vi avatar communication. At least that is my thoughts on it. Wow. This movie is going to really redefine the theater going experience! A great story, awesome effects and all in 3D. Man am I psyched. I also want to add that taking photos of the sets was impossible - so none are available (so far anyway).

Hopefully we will see some exciting new promo materials from Jim Cameron as also exclusively uncovered by my "Avatar" sources in the coming weeks...
As always, I will post new info as I receive it - unless the sensitivity is too extreme and my source asks me to hold back somewhat. This post for instance is missing some truly cool stuff but I cannot divulge it due to the fact it would closely label just who my source in this case is. Let's put it this way: I am smiling a lot more today... :-)

More on Avatar: Weaver Speaks!

Now I enjoyed this interview much better! Sigourney Weaver is of course starring in James Cameron's "Avatar" and she speaks with Premiere magazine about her experiences there. I will skip straight to the Avatar related material for you:

How much screentime will you have in Avatar? Would you describe your part there as a supporting role?
No, I have the female lead. You know, live action. I guess I would have to say that Sam and Zoe play the romantic leads, but I probably have the next biggest, or as big a part.

Has Jim mellowed any? Is that possible?
I think, you know, he gets impatient trying to get his ideas across to people, but I think he's very mellowed. He was always a sweetheart. [She responds to my raised-eyebrow look] He really was always a sweetheart! He can get impatient with people. I think as long as you don't take it personally... so that hasn't changed. And he always puts so much on himself — in this case, he invented the cameras, he did the sets, he designed the guns, he designed a lot of the creatures that are going to be in this other world — it's all from his head. He's operating the camera. Because people can't read his mind, that makes him a little impatient. I think, considering what he's taken on, he's quite angelic, actually.

Did you guys spend a lot of time talking about the old days, or was it down to business?
Well, it's both. We're very fond of each other because that was quite an experience in itself. So there definitely is a happy vibe working together and then we do try to get on with it. I mean, he created a wonderful character for me. She's a lot like him — she's very impatient, she's very driven, she's got a big heart, she's very complicated and you see very different people in the human world and in the avatar world. It's a fantastic canvas for me to paint on — it's certainly not a supporting role in any way.

Has he let you read the whole Avatar script? Is he keeping it to himself?
Oh no, I've read the whole script.

What would you compare it to?
I can't think of anything, frankly. I can't think of anything. It's gonna blow the mind of this industry, I think. It's gonna be an experience for people. I don't think they're going to want to come out of the theater. I think kids will want to stay in the theater with their sleeping bags so they don't have to go out into the real world. It's about something. It's about ecology in a lot of ways. About greed.

Imperialism?
Yeah. About love. About becoming a man. You know, a lot of his favorite themes. It's a very dense piece of work. I've only seen the motion-capture 40 percent done, but it's pretty awesome. The live action I've seen almost all of, and it's a very affecting story. When you see scenes that are very affecting in 3D, you can't keep them out.

The movie isn't slated for release until December '09, but it sounds like you've seen a lot of completed work. I imagined it was mostly not done yet.
Oh, it is mostly not done yet. I saw something someone else had edited of my scenes. For some reason, they wanted me to see most of my scenes before I left, so I was forced to do that. I think he's very proud of how it's going. Then I got to see certain scenes that are in the script at Weta, when I was over there talking to the animators about Grace, my character. They're just doing a fabulous job. Everyone is going to want to go to this place.

What does Grace look like, by the way?
She's got beautiful, bright red hair and big eyelashes. No make-up. She's a scientist, and she's an attractive woman who has given up a normal life to devote herself to this planet and fight this fight. She learns a lot over the course of the story.

So there ya go - more information than we had before! Grace has red hair and no make-up. Well at least we learned something, officially anyway!

Michelle Rodriguez Joins Avatar...

Ass-kickin' Michelle Rodriguez, most recently from the TV show 'Lost', joins Avatar and will play an ex-marine pilot according to Variety.

Steven Lang also joins as marine colonel who is on Pandora leading his fellow soldiers. Great casting obviously. Sigourney Weaver and Rodriguez fit perfectly into the sci-fi mold...

Sigourney: Avatar has 2 parellel stories...

Sigourney Weaver recently stated (Hit) that James Cameron's Avatar will consist of two stories running together:

“I’m not allowed to give too much away, but we have parallel adventures. There’s a younger person’s story and a smaller, older person’s story all happening at the same time. All my scenes are with [Worthington]. It’s really a lovely relationship”.

She goes further into how sweeping the movie is - ambitious and romantic. "I can't wait to get back."

...neither can we Ripley. Err, Sigourney. :-)

A Titanic Leak! Avatar Teaser Poster & Concept Photos !

James Cameron's Avatar has a leaked photo! Here's our first glance at brand spankin' new concept photos and a poster apparently taken and smuggled out of Peter Jackson's New Zealand Weta Studios.

Notice down at the bottom of the board there are two photos of the same jungle area, green theone in other in blue (click the top photo of the board for a larger image). I think these are the first images of the digital 3D process. Nice poster too.

Awesome.

Apparently the poster has the planet and titling popping out at you and the whole thing is holographic and will follow you as you walk by it!

Nice way to market the $200m digital 3D production due out in 2009. I would expect more innovative marketing ideas popping out in the meantime!

Stay tuned for more as-it-happens...

Avatar: Why this movie is important...

James Cameron is back. Avatar is planned for release in the summer of 2009. Why should MarketSaw be thinking about this movie now?

We all know what Cameron is capable of, but then again do we? Titanic, Aliens and True Lies exhibited innovative approaches to big budget productions but now Cameron is attempting the holy grail of cinema, 3D. However his approach introduces risk. He is counting on the widespread adoption of 3D digital theaters by 2009, something that I am hesitate to assume. There has to be a catalyst to start that whole ball rolling and perhaps Avatar is it. Before today the 3D world was ruled by IMAX, their system being spectacular and immersive.

Here is what I have heard so far: Cameron is always wanting to push the envelope and tackle projects that REQUIRE new technology to accomplish. In Avatar's case, it's advanced 3D ('Fusion Camera') and CGI (the movie is 60% CGI!!). New theaters just for this new technology? I hope so. The industry has been resting on the old way of doing things for too long. A simple projection screen can be accomplished at home. They will need a couple thousand of these theaters built by mid 2009 though! Now thats what I call a movie launch; theaters built specifically to host this movie (and more to come of course).

Everybody knows the impact Star Wars and The Matrix has had on film making. What Cameron is doing has far, FAR more ramifications and if he succeeds (I think he will) we will be one step closer to actually stepping into the movies themselves.

So how do you PAY for all of this? Well first of all you need economies of scale. Cameron will be filming another movie with the same type of tech. So what is being produced after Avatar? Battle Angel Alita apparently. Another project Cameron has had in the works for some time now.

By the way, Sigourney Weaver (Alien series) has definitely signed on (playing Grace) and there are some good rumors on Angelina Jolie (The Good Shepherd) contributing. For you audio buffs, industry icon James Horner has confirmed his involvement as well.

The budget on Avatar seems to be on par with what Titanic cost: $200,000,000! It should be a spectacle and define yet another threshold of innovation from the Cameron camp.
