Jim here. Quite a few visuals we have seen before, but still nice to see Depp talking about the role for the first time via featurette.
Depp talks about loving the character because all of his emotions are clearly on his sleeve but personally I think it has more to do with Tim Burton ringing him up: "Got another one for you..." :-)
Still, the casting is good. Depp can just about play anything really. If you look at his body of work it is truly quite amazing. I was most taken aback by SWEENEY TODD.
Here is part of what Depp had to say about the Hatter: 'He's mad. He's unpredictable. You see instantly what he's feeling. Like a mood ring, his emotions are very very close to the surface. He's a fascinating character. Being able to play the Mad Hatter and breathe life into that was a dream come true.'
Look for a series of these featurettes from Disney. And look for ALICE IN WONDERLAND in theaters March 5.
ALICE rates as one of my top must sees of 2010! Stay tuned for the 2010 S3D Movie Guide coming out shortly.
Jim here. Its about time Disney gave us more ALICE IN WONDERLAND!! :-) Joking. The exposure has been good so far - keep it up.

Johnny Depp seems to be bugging out! I have got a sneaking suspicion that Burton is going to have fun freaking us out with the Mad Hatter's eyes. Should be fun!

Next up?Darren Aronofsky is getting 3D cold feet apparently! As you may know already, Aronofsky was to helm ROBOCOP and it was thought to be shot in stereoscopic 3D. Mary Parent made it abundantly clear that MGM wants it in S3D and generally the purse strings talk loudest. And to be fair - she's right!
But along comes Aronofsky and reports that he is against such plans. From MovieHole.net's source:"But, as you know, Darren Aronofsky is a real artist and he's not interested in gimmicks like 3D, CGI, Filming digital, he wants to do everything as real (organic) as possible just like THE FOUNTAIN."
LOL - I would hardly call that being a real artist, maybe old school. So let me get this straight. This guy wants to shoot a modern SciFi movie WITHOUT CGI? I can see maybe old school lenses on film, ok... but NO CGI? Even Michael Bay is laughing at that one. The cost would be prohibitive of course.
Man this movie would be perfect for motion capture. What is he thinking? Then again, maybe the report is wrong. In which case - get on with it! :-)
Guys - Jim here. I have to say this looks fake to me. Sorry - but from what I have heard, Depp's character is CGI all the way. If that wasn't the case, I might be buying this look.
Besides, even if it was still CGI and he was merely in character for the shooting, he would be rigged up with performance capture "dots" (reflective points of reference for capturing his movements and expressions). So I say don't drink this potion this time around.
But hey, what if it is authentic? Looks sufficiently weird enough right? This COULD be from the desk of someone working with the raw perfcap data and creating the final work... Hmmm... Given enough time I could convince myself it is real... :-)
Hi all - Jim here. Johnny Depp has accepted the role of The Mad Matter in Tim Burton's 3D fantasy epic ALICE IN WONDERLAND. While there was some talk of the role going to a lesser known actor, ultimately I think we all knew that Depp BELONGED in this flick somehow and if the role of Alice was really going to an actress, then what would the next plum role be? Of course. It all kinda makes mad sense.
So what does this mean for the movie? Well obviously AIW3D is going to have an edge to it and just how far will Burton take that edge is anyone's guess. The man has a blank slate in front of him and a full palette of imagination - that is SCARY in his hands! Should make for a simple awesome stereoscopic movie.
Stay tuned for more casting news when it comes!! What do you think of the casting so far? Sound off!
