Nicolas Cage Talks DRIVE ANGRY: Will Be Shot In Native 3D And Will Have Supernatural Aspects

Jim here. MTV caught up with Nicholas Cage at Wondercon and asked him some questions about his upcoming thriller DRIVE ANGRY (which they erroneously stated was due for release this year - it will actually be released February 11, 2011).

Says Cage: "What's really cool is that the 3-D is from scratch — all the cameras are 3-D. It's not going to be tacked onto the movie afterwards. Patrick [Lussier], the director, is very excited about it. It's the first one [like this]; it's like if you got to see an old '70s action movie, but in 3-D. We're doing something semi-historical, because it's the first 3-D movie shot [in the] style of a '70s action film. You could see Charles Bronson or Eastwood [starring in a film like this] in those days."

"DRIVE ANGRY is also another foray into the supernatural," Cage said of what attracted him to project, revealing a ghostly element of the story line that is being kept largely under wraps. "There's a supernatural element to it as well, which is keeping with what my interests are right now."

Great to hear it is native 3D
and I expected nothing less from my friend, director Patrick Lussier (MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3-D). I expect some cool edginess and some pretty graphic content!!

Cage is enjoying a wonderful resurgence. His awesome role in KICK ASS is not to be missed. I just wish he could maintain that momentum!

Here is the full interview:

Stay tuned for more as we get it!

MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D Available On DVD & Blu-ray Preorder Now

Hey guys - Jim here. We all know how well MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D performed this year at the box office - taking in $72 million worldwide on a budget of only $15 million.

So how about it? You interested in getting a copy for home? You can now - available for pre-order on Amazon. It will be formally released on May 15. However, and a big however - is that while they provide four 3D glasses with the movie, they are sadly anaglyph.

Once we have a "3D in the home TV standard" then you will see 3D home videos with the cool new modern 3D glasses (and of course $ invested in equipment). You can also watch this movie in 2D though whenever the old technology gets too much for ya.

Fangoria got the scoop on the full disc details:
The film will be in both widescreen 2-D and 3-D (with four pairs of glasses); the DVDs present the movie with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, and the Blu-ray sports DTS-HD 7.1 Master Audio. Supplements on the Special Edition DVD and the Blu-ray include: Audio commentary by director Patrick Lussier and co-writer Todd Farmer; Deep Inside MY BLOODY VALENTINE making-of featurette; Sex, Blood and Screams—The Special Make-Up FX of MY BLOODY VALENTINE featurette; Deleted and extended scenes; Gag reel.

There is a cool BTS video clip from the movie here too. Thanks Jason for alerting me to this!

Patrick Lussier Talks "My Bloody Valentine 3D" Behind The Scenes

Jim here. ICG Magazine has a super interview with Patrick Lussier, director of MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D (MBV3D) in preparation for his keynote address at NAB 2009 in Las Vegas.

The whole interview demands to be read from top to bottom right here.

Here are some excerpts:

ICG: What were some of your early concerns about working in 3D?
Lussier: Just being able to speak the language of 3D movies. We were going to be almost 95 percent location, shooting in real-world environments and, in particular, underground in a mine with the 3D cameras. Some of the 3D companies we talked to were very concerned and said, ‘Our cameras are very delicate and you can’t really be doing that.’ Then we found Paradise [Paradise FX Corp, Van Nuys, Calif.)] and they said, ‘We can do anything you want.’

ICG: Tell me about the cameras you chose and your experience using them.
Lussier: We used a set of dual RED cameras as our primary rig. We also used the 2K Silicon Imaging cameras for our Steadicam rig. About 60 to 70 percent was shot on the REDs and 30 to 40 percent was shot on the SIs.

ICG: What was it like working with a stereographer?
Lussier: We were so lucky to have Max [Penner] who was great at explaining what he was doing and what he needed to do. The big thing was for him to see the rehearsal of the shots, especially any shots that moved, to see how the stereography needed to be adjusted to get the shot. Just like a focus puller needs to figure out where his focus marks are, the stereographer needs to figure out where his stereo marks are. In the beginning, it was a constant challenge to remember that everything had to be set for stereo, and it’s not as obvious as setting focus where you can tell that the thing that’s supposed to be in focus either is or isn’t. For stereo, it’s deciding the point you want, and the part of the frame you want, to be out as well as how far out you want it to be. For example, is it in the audience, is it behind the audience, how deep does it go? So, it’s much more subjective and has a much more artistic role than focus. Max has been involved in 3D for years and years, and has such a deep understanding of how stereo works and how it is best presented to an audience in terms of not becoming painful or a downright mistake. For example, making sure the intraoculars are done right or how to avoid miniaturization.

ICG: How does a stereographer impact the roles of, and relationships between, the director and the DP?
Lussier: It’s only an advantage. Brian and I worked together before, and our relationship was almost exactly the same during this movie. The stereographer is much more like the focus puller, but as it relates to the subtlety or ‘in-your-faceness’ of the 3D. I would frequently ride with the stereographer watching a shot to see where the 3D was going, and what things are being brought more or less into 3D. For example, if you have more light, you have more 3D, and Brian and I would discuss when we wanted to see more or less 3D. There would be that kind of creative debate between us as it related to the 3D. Max would throw out suggestions about how to enhance the 3D moments, and also offer suggestions about framing. For example, he’d let us know if someone or something that was too much on the edge of the frame so that during exhibition, one eye would see it and the other eye wouldn’t. Max and I would also have discussions about what’s going to proceed or follow a shot where I want to pull something way out into the audience, because those things can impact how far out you can ultimately pull, or whether you’ll have to immediately go into a dissolve.

ICG: Is this just one more market trend in 3D’s history, or is the format finally here to stay?
Lussier: I think 3D is remarkably seductive and a very intoxicating storytelling tool. I think it has all the potential to continually capture audiences and envelope them into the cinematic experience. … For example, there was a moment when we shot in the grocery store and you could see all the details of everything, and the shot in 2D seemed rather ordinary, but in 3D, it had a life unlike anything else. It was literally like we were eavesdropping. Having said that, I think the tell will be if enough venues convert to 3D so that you can have two or three 3D movies in release at the same time. Ultimately, it’s up to the exhibitors to drive this. If we hit that point, then yes, 3D has the potential to not just take off but take over. It could hold the same potential as when we went from black-and-white to color.

Love hearing BTS stories especially about those lovely REDs. Was surprised to hear other companies express concern over location shooting - should be no out-of-bounds in filmmaking if you ask me. Great interview ICG!

Lionsgate has been a leader in horror innovation, so it was important that MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D be a showcase for today’s 3D as an immersive experience and not just a gimmick. "Condition Dead" To Be Shot In 3D? "My Bloody Valentine 3D" Sequel? It Is Being Discussed...

Jim here. Moviehole's Clint Morris recently interviewed Patrick Lussier (MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D - photo on left) and the topic of his next project came up, namely CONDITION DEAD. Here is Lussier talking about 3D:

"Condition Dead would be a perfect 3D movie... It's an aggressive gritty zombie movie with the tagline: When the Dead Rise... Leave it to the professionals.

The story centres on a team that polices 'outbreaks' of a certain kind all over the world. But this time, the outbreak proves to be different than expected.

It's a great script by Dave Davis and would be a blast to make and even more fun to watch.
"

And on a MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D sequel:

"Todd (Farmer) and I have a great concept for the continuing adventures of those who might survive. But we'll have to stay tuned and see if we're lucky enough to make that."

I think Lussier has got the chops to make this happen now. He did a bang up job on MBV3D and if you haven't seen it yet - get out and see it in 3D! It is well worth it and loads of fun. I am fairly sure you will see a sequel as well as more 3D projects from Lussier - hopefully CONDITION DEAD!

Review: "My Bloody Valentine 3D"

In a word - entertaining! If you haven't checked it out yet - or if your local 3D theater has been sold out the past couple of nights - try and try again. And yes, 3D is definitely the way to see this movie.

Right from the start I knew I was witnessing something special and innovative. With the rolling of the Lionsgate corporate intro complete with 3D gears and flying through their keyhole to view their logo - the anticipation was palpable. You could hear the packed in audience gasp at the vividness and immersion of the 3D - and the movie hadn't even started yet! By the way, that 3D logo was "dimensionalized" by In-Three.

I must say that the director Patrick Lussier used light to his advantage extremely well during the movie - from the very dark mine tunnels and miner's helmet lights (hard to pull off as 3D tends to be dim) to the interior and day lit exteriors, he instills a sense of actually being there that is a first for me in a feature film (U2 3D being a concert).

Some very innovative 3D techniques were used for the gory parts of the movie (that earned an R rating from the MPAA) and while I won't go into details as it would ruin it for you - suffice to say that you will definitely be entertained by them. In one particular murder, the audience actually becomes the victim momentarily and that sends your mind reeling in empathy. For more on the technology behind the 3D used here - check this out.

The ending is satisfying. More than not in horrors, things just don't end up right - well you can count on a great ending here with some twists that you may not have imagined.

Worth every dime folks. Get out and enjoy the first 3D movie of 2009, especially with your loved one - just as how they have marketed it. Perfect job, I might add. Marketers, take a bow. Should be some massive box office for all concerned.

"My Bloody Valentine 3D" Opens Today

**Update Jan 17: The only 3D trailer in front of the viewing that I saw was CORALINE, which I had seen before so I was disappointed. I hope other areas enjoyed some more 3D trailers!

With all the excellent reviews coming in (FilmSchoolRejects, AICN) I think it is a DUTY for you as a 3D fan to get out and check it out! :-)

Seriously, from what I am hearing the movie is above average and in 3D really delivers. So get out and see it! And let us know what you thought...

Your mission: A quick review and tell us what trailers played in front of MBV3D and if they were in 3D or not.

Unless you are under age - this thing is rated R. SO NO MINERS MINORS ALLOWED! :-)

The Tech Behind MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D: Silicon Imaging and Paradise FX

**Working on some behind-the-scenes shots from MBV3D - stay tuned...

Jim here guys. Had a great opportunity to talk with Ari Presler, President of Silicon Imaging (SI) today and thought you would like to hear about some of the projects they have been working on - including MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D (MBV3D).
We also hear from some very talented folks who work with the SI equipment regularly. I have done posts previously on the RED cameras, now lets take a look at the other heavy hitter in digital 3D: SI.

The first photo on the right is of MBV3D's Howard Smith and director, Patrick Lussier operating a Si-2K 3D Mini Rig on Steadicam. You can see the portability of the rig and ability to adapt to challenging environments.

Silicon Imaging had one of its first test shoots with its new camera technology done on MUTANT CHRONICLES with Thomas Jane and Cinematographer, Geoff Boyle. It was at that time Thomas decided to develop DARK COUNTRY in 3D. You can see in SI's press release: 2K Digital Cinema Camera Streamlines Movie and HD Production where they recognize the unique capability of the SI-2K Mini and its ideal potential for shooting 3D.

"The Silicon Imaging camera is truly amazing," states Cinematographer Geoff Boyle. "The SI-2K MINI is small enough to be placed directly in a scene for point-of-view shots, used on robotic arms for model photography or incorporate two side-by-side for stereo 3-D. We used it on MUTANT CHRONICLES, a Sci-Fi feature with over 1500 visual effect shots. We shot flames and explosions using the 72fps slow motion mode and the recordings display smooth tonal gradations and natural colors. Finally, the director can immediately see full-resolution instant replays, without having to wait for film dailies or color correction."

Thomas Jane and Geoff Boyle connected with ParadiseFX (Max Penner and Tim Thomas), who were in the midst of building a 9-camera SI-2K 360 system for flight over Niagara falls. Here is a discovery Channel coverage of the shoot.

SI collaborated for several months to get our first Si-2K 3D Mini systems into the Sony Pictures / Thomas Jane production with Ron Perlman. The SI-2K steadicam rigs opened up a new way to shoot compelling 3D content with film-like results, on the move and in the scene. See release here.

“The physical size of the Silicon Imaging 3D rigs completely redefine the scope and potential of 3D cinematography," says Director of Photography Geoff Boyle. "For instance, the variable interocular rig on our MK-V-AR Steadicam weighed approximately 10lbs, and our fixed interocular version came in at a feather-light 3lbs. While most of shots had the cameras mounted in the Steadicam rig, there's really no limit to where you can mount these things. Our camera mounts are only part of the story though; where the true revolution lies is that we've now been given a visual language and stylistic choices that nobody has ever seen in a 3D movie before. Had we utilized any other camera system, there would have been nothing new to see – it would have looked like any other 3D film shot in the past 50 years in terms of the physical restraints of how or when we could move the camera. To bring a thriller car-chase movie like DARK COUNTRY to life, we simply couldn't make those compromises."

"DARK COUNTRY is a film that I wanted to express in a manner that remains true to the stylistic choices of film noir, while delivering an immersive reality and visceral experience that only the next generation of 3D cinematography could provide," says DARK COUNTRY Actor/Director Thomas Jane. "Every medium brings a life of it's own to the story-telling process, and with DARK COUNTRY, I wanted audiences to be there, to be in the car with the characters, and make the story their own with a heightened sense of physical contact never experienced before. The mobility and physical expression in each shot we were able to achieve with the Silicon Imaging camera rigs truly transformed my personal vision into a living and breathing visual reality."

The work on DARK COUNTRY, now in post, was the basis for the camera technology and techniques brought to bear for the shooting of MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D written by Todd Farmer (Jason X).

ParadiseFX built an even smaller 3D-rig for MBV3D with additional wireless controls around the SI-2K Mini. The two cameras are shooting the same scene thru a beam-Splitter. One camera is on top seeing a reflect image from the beam splitter and the second camera is looking forward. This is from the scene in the forest.

At approximately the same time as Patrick Lussier was directing MBV3D in Pittsburgh, Danny Boyle and Anthony Dod Mantle were shooting the award winning (4 Golden Globes) SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, with the same core technology, just in 2D.

The SI-2K Camera rigs and the ParadiseFX team are now on-set shooting with THE HOLE 3D with Joe "Gremlins" Dante.

The word on the street is Thomas Jane is now working with writers Todd Farmer (MBV3D) and Tim Bradstreet (Punisher) on DEVIL'S COMMANDOS 3D.

Several other SI-2K 3D are currently in production (see below) and while we can't discuss the projects yet, here are some interesting and certainly, question generating images. Looks like fun!

You have got to love it when technology and passion come together - great things happen. That's why I feel very safe in saying projects like MBV3D and THE DARK COUNTRY are going to look very stunning visually. Not only because of the people making the movie, but the passion that goes into the technology as well.

Thank you Ari for your time and in giving our readers a glimspe of what happens behind the scenes with new 3D technology. Enjoy the secret set snaps below...

Jessica Alba Wears Pajamas To The Premiere Of "My Bloody Valentine 3D"?

What was she thinking? Sure she just had a baby (didn't she?), but still - this is a pretty public place wouldn't you say?

Perhaps she has invented her own form of martial arts complete with a new Gi.

I am sure she wants to get the nod from James Cameron for Battle Angel - but... don't think this route will work necessarily...

Unless she DOES have a new martial art form perfected. Hmmm.

New "My Bloody Valentine 3D" Poster Comin' At Ya!

Jim here - thanks to my friend Ryan Rotten over at STYD, here is the next MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D poster from the fine folks at Lionsgate. Looks like he has an axe to pick with you.

I sense a THEME here... don't you? You think there will be the occasional pick axe being thrown at the audience? Not sure... but... I think so. I always thought gas masks were scary from my youth - don't know why really. Just creeps me out. Now if there was a ZOMBIE in a gas mask - I would bolt for the nearest exit.

MUST WATCH: Awesome New Trailer For "My Bloody Valentine 3D"

Jim here. Whoa - check out this awesome new trailer for MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D. There are obvious gimmick moments like throwing the pick axe at the screen - I knew damn well that was going to happen at some point in this movie!

But I subscribe to 3D gimmicks if used well for the horror genre and I didn't see too much of it in the trailer. I remember the same ol' folks complaining about the gimmicks from the JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH trailer and that went on to earn over $190m worldwide.

What I don't like is 3D gimmicks in other genres like drama, even science fiction. Horror? Ok. Make it work. Check it out yourself:

And don't forget what is probably the most telling aspect of this trailer: The rating. The MPAA rated it "R" for "Graphic, brutal horror violence and grizzly images throughout, some strong sexuality, graphic nudity and language." Don't pretend this is going to be a nice family movie with some 3D thrill ride stunts like JOURNEY. It isn't. I am looking forward to this movie immensely and I have high expectations. We shall see won't we? Opens January 16th, 2009.

New "My Bloody Valentine 3D" Poster Online

Hey well, if I was that guy in the front row, I would be moving to protect the privates right about now!

MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D has an axe to pick with you on January 16th, 2009...

Ugo.com lands the new poster - enjoy!

Oh and I have to post this ridiculous rant post from my friend Alex on FirstShowing.net - it is good for a laugh and boy is he so wrong! He has been anti-3D since day one. This movie is going to wipe the box office floor with whatever is playing at the same time! In fact I commented on his post to the same effect; go ahead - post on there too with your thoughts LOL!

"My Bloody R-Rated Valentine 3D"

Yes sir, Jim here. MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D has earned an 'R' rating from the MPAA for "graphic, brutal horror violence and grizzly images throughout, some strong sexuality, graphic nudity and language." Heck they even had to tone down the movie poster so that the blood appeared much more washed out to even put it up in theaters!

As you may already know, MBV3D focuses on a man who returns to his hometown on the 10th anniversary of a rather intense Valentine's Day slaying - but it is he who is being considered a suspect.

Oh you can be sure to expect to be totally grossed out in this movie. In 3D. Awesome or what? :-)

"My Bloody Valentine 3D": New Set Pic

Jim here. Our friend Scott Weinberg of Fearnet has a great set report and a new exclusive set photo from MY BLOODY VALENTINE that I thought you should see. He also had a very interesting interview with director Patrick Lussier who had this to say:

"We just want to make a good, scary horror movie, and we think this 3-D process will allow those fans to enjoy something a little bit familiar AND a little bit unique. It's all about giving the ticket-buyers something they'll hopefully enjoy. We sure didn't HAVE to bother with the 3-D workload, but if the extra work makes the movie that much cooler..."

I have been hearing nothing but positive things about MBV3D and now it seems that the end result will be something special that all horror fans should be excited about. Can't wait. Be sure to check out Scott's full report on Fearnet.

That's Jensen Ackles in the photo btw. MBV3D is slated for release on January 16th, 2009.

Quick Post: "My Bloody Valentine 3-D" Trailer to Ride With Saw 5

According to Moviehole, the trailer (2D mind you) for MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3-D will be shown before SAW 5 which is due for release on October 24th. There should also be some more images released soon too.

Great news. I have been waiting for something to finally show up in trailer format! Apparently MBV3D will hold its own on 2D screens as it is a kick ass movie first and foremost. Awesome! Hey there is quite a market for Saw movies isn't there? Market. Saw. Nevermind... :-)

First Look: "My Bloody Valentine 3D" Poster!

Hey all - Jim here. Something interesting from our friends over at BloodyDisgusting.com - a first look at the upcoming "My Bloody Valentine 3D" poster! Looks pretty darn bloody. The image is slightly askew as it was actually being held by someone.

Lets see the heart must mean Valentine's Day right?? Not too hard to grasp that one. Well, if you are familiar with the original story you know that there is a unique slant on the human heart in one scene particularly...

I really like how this movie is shaping up guys! I think the potential is there to break horror film box office records with this... We. shall. see.

Oh and the second image is another closer view from ShockTillYouDrop.com (I enchanced the original a bit)...
