CinemaCon 2011: Disney Screenings - CARS 2, ON STRANGER TIDES and THE AVENGERS

I just saw 26 minutes of footage from CARS 2 and 19 minutes from PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES in extremely well projected 3D by MasterImage. The movies look outstanding.

I can't divulge too much info but CARS 2 looks to be a better outing than the first in my mind. Lots of action and well, anything with Michael Caine is awesome anyway!

POTC looks like a ton-o-fun too. I saw a very ingenious escape scene that I can't describe to you right now, but it is worth the price of admission in itself!

Oh and I saw much more of Blackbeard and he is going to be the perfect villain in the movie! LOVED his scenes.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Rob Marshall gave the clip's intro in person.

I also saw a sizzler reel for THE AVENGERS! Let me tell you the whole audience was open mouthed in watching it. Several stars were interviewed for the clip like Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johannson along with director Joss Whedon who you could tell is so excited to be working on the picture. This thing is going to be MAMMOTH!

More soon!

Watch: PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES Trailer #2

Here's the new trailer for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES from Disney! It is an improvement from the first trailer in my view as it reveals much more of the story behind what we are going to see this May.

Here's the storyline:
Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Rob Marshall, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” captures the fun, adventure and humor that ignited the hit franchise—this time in Disney Digital 3D™. Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow in an action-packed adventure. Crossing paths with the enigmatic Angelica (Penelope Cruz), he’s not sure if it’s love—or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the “Queen Anne’s Revenge,” the ship of the legendary pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know whom to fear more: Blackbeard or Angelica, with whom he shares a mysterious past. The international cast includes franchise vets Geoffrey Rush as the vengeful Captain Hector Barbossa and Kevin R. McNally as Captain Jack’s longtime comrade Joshamee Gibbs, plus Sam Claflin as a stalwart missionary and Astrid Berges-Frisbey as a mysterious mermaid.

Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) finds himself on an unexpected journey to the fabled Fountain of Youth when a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz) forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane).

Director: Rob Marshall
Producer: Jerry Bruckheimer
Writer: Ted Elliott
Studio: Walt Disney Pictures
Cast: Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Penelope Cruz
Release: May 20, 2011

I like the focus on this one. The previous iterations I found to be onerous and heavy, but this one so far suits me just fine! More when I get it!

Watch: PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES Trailer

Got the new trailer for ON STRANGER TIDES for you! Looks like some impressive action though I don't know if I am sold on Penelope Cruz yet. We'll see. Rush and Depp are no-brainers.

The mermaids and zombies are intriguing! Must. Learn. More.

Of course there is the standard Captain Jack humor interjected throughout!

The movie was shot in native 3D so I expect it to be GORGEOUS - especially with all those exotic shooting locations.

PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES - Behind The Scenes Clip!!

Yes - that is a RED ONE camera - positioned in the top half of a stereoscopic 3D rig shooting Jerry Bruckheimer's PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES! Cool to see them in action.

I have to say Johnny Depp's carriage jumping scene looks amazing! Not to mention the size of the sets. The behind the scenes shots in this clip are from the London location; they are also shooting in Hawaii and Los Angeles.

This iteration of the PIRATES franchise is supposedly meant to stand on its own however we have just heard a rumor that the fifth and sixth installments will be probably shot back to back - though this is not confirmed.

Here's the official storyline:
In this action-packed tale of truth, betrayal, youth and demise, Captain Jack Sparrow crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz), and he’s not sure if it’s love–or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. I don't see this franchise faltering ANY time soon.
Too much iconic character in Captain Jack Sparrow and Depp is practically reveling in it. Who wouldn't in his shoes? Stay tuned for more right here on MarketSaw - the best spot on the interwebs for 3D entertainment news!

ON STRANGER TIDES rises in theaters May 20, 2011.

Johnny Depp's Teaser Trailer For ON STRANGER TIDES!

**Update July 30: Just got the official version of the clip! Check it out below...

**Same Day Update:
I have been requested by Jerry Bruckheimer's team to remove the video, to which I have complied. Too bad, I enjoyed it immensely!

LOL. I love how he captures an audience!
Johnny Depp is truly one of the great actors of his generation. Depp's acting range is unmatched and Captain Jack Sparrow will go down as probably his greatest character.

Disney is right to place him front and center with PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES because much of the previous star power is now gone: Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley will not be returning. Geoffrey Rush is still there though thank the movie gods.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer needs a massive hit too. Lately his stock has fallen somewhat, but still $326 million worldwide is not too shabby for PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME - it is just not Bruckheimer numbers that's all. THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE is languishing too; just $68 million worldwide to date. That one hurts - though I enjoyed it somewhat.

Check out Depp's little rant - all in character!

There are not many surer bets than a PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN sequel is there?

Exclusive: TRANSFORMERS 3 Will Be Native 3D And An Update From PACE

We have already heard that there is a strong chance that Michael Bay is shooting TRANSFORMERS 3 in native 3D via Ridley Scott. Now we have exclusive information from a person very much in the know that it is in fact happening.

...As I said in the last post, I have recently spoken with Vince Pace who is of course very well known in 3D circles.

Here is what Vince had to say about his current projects:
"Trying to lay low and do what I do best. We took delivery of the first Alexa cameras for Hugo and have 23 more on the way. Transformers has also signed on to shoot 3D throughout the film. I am working on a big Disney film but can’t mention the name and are lining up five more films. Just wrapped on additional photography for Resident Evil and Tron. Currently in Hawaii and flying out to London for Hugo."

Perfect! I can't wait to see the 3D visuals from TRANSFORMERS 3. And the unnamed Disney movie shooting in Hawaii? I would place my bets on PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES wouldn't you?

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES Starts Production

Walt Disney Pictures / Jerry Bruckheimer Films' PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES has started production in Disney Digital 3D!

I have been waiting for this one for a long time - 3D is perfect for family entertainment and of course Disney is on top of that.

Here is the press release:
BURBANK, Calif. (June 21, 2010) -- Production has commenced on location in Hawaii, the United Kingdom and Los Angeles on Walt Disney Pictures’ and Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ sweeping comedy adventure “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” directed by Rob Marshall (“Chicago”), the fourth entry in the blockbuster franchise which has already reaped $2.7 billion in worldwide box office from the previous three films, and the first to be filmed and presented in Disney Digital 3D™. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES Will Be In Native 3D!

Walt Disney Pictures has announced that PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES will in fact be shot in native 3D. Disney Digital 3D to use the Mouse House's vernacular.

Johnny Depp is returning as Captain Jack Sparrow and the new film will be somewhat based on the Tim Powers book "On Stranger Tides." Geoffrey Rush will once again play Barbossa and Ian McShane will suit up as Blackbeard with Penelope Cruz as his daughter. Captain Jack continues his search for the Fountain of Youth.

The Jerry Bruckheimer produced, Rob Marshall directed mega-project is slated for release on May 20, 2011.

I think this is a VERY wise decision from Disney and Bruckheimer's team. While Jerry's last 3D effort, G-FORCE, was a well done conversion; Warner's CLASH OF THE TITANS 3D blunder (despite its massive Box Office) gave the industry a bit of a black eye. It's time to ante up with quality projects and you can push this one to the top of the list now!

Pirates Of The Caribbean 4 To Be Shot In 3D? Could Happen!

Jim here. To be frank, any future tentpole from Disney could be 3D. We know all of their animated features will be 3D (both Disney AND Pixar) and so it is easy to speculate that since Disney is 3D empowered lately (BOLT is opening this weekend and Hannah Montana led the way earlier this year), why not start guessing about their leading franchises?

Like PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN. Variety speculates that an announcement could happen very soon - well, there is certainly opportunity with 2 major 3D conferences going on within the next couple of weeks 3DX in Singapore (on NOW) and the 3D Entertainment Summit in LA on December 1-2. Expect a LOT of noise from these events!

We know the 3D trailer for Disney's TR2N was shown at the 3DX Festival in Singapore and it absolutely rocked the house. Of course when they start whipping out their classics like BEAUTY AND THE BEAST for 3D conversion, you know the time has come.

Yes, I agree. Expect a POTC 3D announcement anytime...

Disney Adds Hathaway And Carter To "Alice" And $56 Million To Depp's Wallet... That's Piracy!

Wow. Disney must like Johnny Depp a lot - and with good reason: Pirates as a franchise has brought in $2.7 Billion! And so, they are paying him a lot - $56 million UP FRONT for "Pirates Of The Caribbean 4"

Further, Disney has added Anne Hathaway ("Get Smart") as well as Tim Burton's better half Helena Bonham Carter (loved her "Demon Barber") as the White Queen and he Red Queen respectively.

I gotta say, the cast of Alice is rounding out very nicely. Hope this movie lives up to expectations!

From the Makers of Baywatch and Pirates of the Caribbean: "Booty 3D"!

CPT Holdings, Inc. (a Sony Pictures Television service mark) has contracted with Stereo Vision Entertainment (SVE) for the script of "Booty 3D".

Doug Schwartz, CEO of SVE
(and creator of Baywatch) said: "Booty 3D is a frolicking family fun film about eight women who get kidnapped by a crew of cutthroat pirates. Upon arriving at the pirates island hideout, they turn the tables when they snatch the pirates ship filled with all their booty. A chase across the high seas ensues that rivals Thelma and Louise as the desperate band of pirates attempts, by hook or by crook, to track down their treasure laden galleon, and the crafty wenches that tricked them out of it. This is a movie about female empowerment, a true David and Goliath tale with a twist. Booty 3D is to be filmed on the South Seas paradise island of Fiji, in state-of-the-art digital 3D. It will be filled with blue skies, spectacular South Pacific scenery, beautiful women, and despicable pirates. Booty 3D is the kind of film that will be fun for the whole family."

Jim Byrkit, the Conceptual and Creative Consultant on all three "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies for Jerry Bruckheimer and Gore Verbinski, is co-creator of "Booty 3D" along with Schwartz.

Sounds like the right people are attached to this movie creatively, so we may see a really nice production here! I will keep you up to date with further developments. Movie has been added to my growing 3D movie list found here.

Gears of War FEATURE FILM ?

Variety has announced that New Line Cinema has secured the film rights to Gears of War.

If you have not played Gears of War (GoW) on the Xbox 360, then you probably don't know what the excitement is all about. Lets just say that GoW was the most intense video game yet produced for the console market and the best game of 2006.

However, and a big however, is that they had better not screw it up like Doom. Karl Urban and The Rock did a half decent job with the movie, yet it bombed critically and with the box office. Effective marketing and buzz is essential for this genre of film. Get it done!

One big advantage that GoW will have over the other 'gamer movies' that have been made: One word... CHAINSAW. It will be a gore fest to be sure, but well within the realms of fantasy--not like the Hostel series which is hauntingly possible.

Stuart Beattie (Collateral, Pirates of the Caribbean series, Derailed) wrote the treatment that won over the competing camps. Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen will produce and GoW's lead game designer Cliff Bleszinski will be the executive producer for the film adaptation.

Stay tuned for casting news... (Yah I know the dude looks like Tommy Lee Jones... AIN'T gonna happen. These guys are walking mountains!)
