Jon M. Chu Directing Justin Bieber's New 3D Feature Film

Not totally a surprise and quite frankly a good selection for the upcoming 3D feature film for Justin Bieber. STEP UP 3D's director Jon M. Chu has been selected to direct the much talked about Bieber biopic (however short it is) about how he has arrived at the place he is in today.

Bieber's August 31 concert in NYC will be shot in 3D for inclusion in the movie which will also include behind the scenes footage (which I am assuming was shot in 2D and will need to be converted). Knowing Chu however, he will want to shoot as much as possible in native 3D.

I have seen STEP UP 3D and it certainly shows you that it was shot in native 3D - there are no layering effects and Chu used backgrounds and the environment very effectively in some shots to bring out the beauty of 3D. Sure, parts were a bit cheesy as I am sure the Bieber movie will be but overall the 3D was nicely done.

I am feeling a bit better now about the whole project.
Chu can bring the right combination to light for a successful film. I will try to keep an open mind for it. I will try very HARD.

Watch: Final STEP UP 3D Trailer Online!

The new and final STEP UP 3D trailer is out and it packs a lot more wallop than the previous. Timing in at 3 minutes, you get more of a picture of the big dance contest that they are prepping for as well as the romance developing between the two leads.

We also get a first look at a couple of twins who look like they provide some comedic relief to the film. Looks passable too.

With STEP UP 3D set to spin into theaters tomorrow, this trailer takes it up a notch.

Keep in mind that this movie was entirely shot in native 3D. They were careful to include that nugget of info in the trailer too.

Storyline:
A tight-knit group of New York City street dancers, including Luke (Malambri) and Natalie (Vinson), team up with NYU freshman Moose (Sevani), and find themselves pitted against the world's best hip hop dancers in a high-stakes showdown that will change their lives forever.

I will be checking this out ASAP. I am very curious about how this thing looks and delivers. My dancing days are pretty much over I would say, but I might learn a thing or two... Nah!

Do You Think You Can STEP UP 3D? Trailer Is Online!

Jim here. The trailer for STEP Up 3D is out on the Interwebs now and just as I was expecting, the dance moves are ridiculous. As in awesome. Makes me think that not one of these dancers could string together an entire scene in one take - it would take far too much energy and be fraught with errors. The magic of Hollywood editing!

Who cares? I don't! Looks like solid entertainment, except for maybe the 'romantic' scenes which look a little, shall we say, hokey.

STEP UP 3D is due in theaters August 6, 2010.

Check out the dance scene near the end with the neon clothes - looks like embedded marketing by Disney for TRON: LEGACY! LOL. But hey, that's impossible. Wait. Disney is distributing this thing... :-)

STEP UP 3D's New Poster From Disney

Jim here. Just a quick update with the new poster for Disney's STEP UP 3D directed by Jon M. Chu.

I have to say I haven't seen the first two and the only reason I am seeing this third iteration is to see how 3D is treated in this genre. Who knows? I may really like it. Or not.

STEP UP 3D has an August 6 dance card with 3D screens nationwide.

Let's face it though - there is a mass following this franchise and this one should top them all, box office wise.

It is sad to think Michael Jackson was getting ready to be shot in 3D during his London concert gigs. There was no better entertainer.

STEP UP 3-D UPDATE

Jim here. A movie that I have been getting a LOT of email about from readers is STEP UP 3-D - mainly from dancers who wanted to audition and seek their stardom through it. Well to those that made it - congratulations. To those that haven't, sorry but shooting has begun. We will see some new faces in the movie with Sharni Vinson and Rick Malambri being added as new talent.

I first knew it was shooting when I received a tweet from a guy whose office overlooks SU3D's street level set in New York City. By the time he got my return tweet, the shooting had stopped and apparently it was only a one day shoot (Twitter is only real time if it is read in real time lol). He promises pics if it gets back to that location, but I doubt they will be returning to the same spot.

The movie is about the dancers going to Paris for a big dance competition, but Moose misses his flight - which leads him to enter an underground dance competition in the French city.

STEP UP 3-D is slated for an August 6, 2010 release.

The 3D Technology Behind "Tron2", "Step Up 3-D", "Final Destination 4" and "Avatar"

Jim here. There has been some recent media attention placed on the technology being used for TRON 2 and I just wanted to bring everyone up to speed as to what is fully being used for the stereoscopic 3D.

Peter at Slashfilm is quite correct in stating that they are using Sony Digital F-35 HD cameras. But here is some more detail on TRON2's 3D tech:

1. The F-35s are being also being used with Arri Master Primes. These lenses are SPECTACULAR for creative capture.
2. Principal photography on TRON2 is being done using the Pace FUSION 3D System.
3. I should have some exclusive shots of the 3D equipment shortly. STAY TUNED.

By the way, STEP UP 3-D is also using the Pace Fusion 3D camera system as is FINAL DESTINATION 4 and a little project called AVATAR.

For those new to MarketSaw, the Pace Fusion system was co-invented by Vince Pace and director James Cameron.

Clearly Pace is one of the leaders along with 3ality. Great to see quality equipment and services being used for these productions - it really gives me a good feeling when looking forward to the best 3D experience possible.

Adam Shankman Hints "Hairspray 2" To Be Shot In 3D

Jim here. Got a little interesting news from Collider via FirstShowing that Adam Shankman may be considering HAIRSPRAY 2 in stereoscopic 3D. As you already know, Shankman is producing STEP UP 3-D so he is finely tuned into how to best present dancing/musicals on the big screen.

Some words from Shankman: "There are some really funny ideas, [but] we don't have a writer for it yet.

We were blown away with the tests we just did [for Step Up 3-D] and seeing the dance in 3D, and an arm coming out and flips that are going by your head. It was such an incredible experience.

Yeah, that would be cool in 3-D because it has a pop-sensibility. 3-D should be regulated to things with a pop-sensibility because that’s the experience you want from those kinds of films."

So, obviously you guys know I disagree with Shankman by about 95% regarding his "pop-sensibility" comment. The future of 3D lies in adding depth and inviting the audience INTO a movie rather than blasting them with fireballs and spear tips. Sure, an inventive use of a popping gimmick can sometimes liven up a horror movie or comedy - but the bottom line is 3D must be used well as another option on the palette of the director.

Will STEP UP 3-D and HAIRSPRAY be great 3D movies? Hard to say right now. I have not seen one frame yet and those comments by Shankman do set me back a bit. I do feel though that dance movies, concerts and some live events can get away with some of that "comin' at ya" 3D - just not too much of it.

In the meantime, bring on more! I just saw KA (Cirque du Soleil show) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and was thinking how good it would look on the big screen in 3D. Why not?

New "Step Up 3D" Poster Revealed

Jim here. Comingsoon.net has scored a look at the first STEP UP 3D Poster - and proceeded to watermark it. So I chopped off the watermark as it is not my style and presented it here for you. If however, you want the full length of the sheet and don't mind their name plastered over it, check it out here.

Looks like the same formula if you ask me, but with the awesome addition of 3D. Of course you can see in the background that New York and Paris play some kind of role in the movie.

No date is set for the release of STEP UP 3D.

I have said it before, I am giving full kudos because it is taking a first shot at a new genre in 3D. I really do hope they pull this off and put on a stunning show!

In the Works: "Step Up 3-D" - Disney to Dance in 3D!

For all of you "Step Up" fans, due to the outstanding success of the franchise (Step Up 2 cost only cost $20m to make and made $28m it's first 5 days) Disney will be calling on 3D to bring us closer to all the action.

Jon Chu (Step Up 2) is in negotiations to direct the movie.
Adam Shankman and Jennifer Gibgot of Offspring Entertainment will head the development of it. No dates set yet.

While I am not really a fan of these dance movies, I haven't really given them a chance yet either. Now I will. I will definitely check this one out when it hits theaters!
