I've been waiting for this conversion for a long time now and even though this may be the only Spielberg movie to get a conversion other than potentially CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, I can live with that. For now.
What a great way to introduce a new generation to Spielberg and this amazing adventure! The movie will celebrate it's 20th anniversary next summer.

The FINDING NEMO 3D conversion is my second most anticipated Pixar re-release this year following BEAUTY AND THE BEAST - but really they are both classics and must-sees in 3D.

Gorgeous! Bring it on back Pixar!! Look for it on September 14...
Anytime is a good time to listen to the master storyteller of our time, James Cameron. And when he starts talking about "his baby", TITANIC, it's definitely amplified.
I'm enthralled to listen to him recount his days making the movie, why they decided to go with a 3D conversion and seeing that giant replica behind him of the ship.
I have to say that he looks and sounds quite tired (or sick) in this thing. He is definitely not himself and I have spoken with him many times. I think the man has been pulling wicked hours working on AVATAR 2 and 3 while trying to re-release TITANIC 3D as perfect as can be. I hope he can find the time to rest because there is only one Cameron in the world and no one can keep that pace up forever.

Even I have to say I didn't see this one coming. I kinda expected THE LION KING to be number one last week with relatively sluggish competition but to repeat at number one two weeks in a row up against Brad Pitt's MONEYBALL and a family dollar splitting competitor in DOLPHIN TALE? Forget it. At least that's what I thought...
Instead THE LION KING rules again taking in $22 million dollars (MONEYBALL swung at $19.5m and DOLPHIN TALE ate $19m)! Can you believe it? Amazing. It only dropped 27% bringing the 10 day take of the re-release in stereo to $61.7 million. Add that to the original release box office and the total worldwide gross now stands at $861 million - 12th best on the all time list!!
But we are not done yet. Not unexpectedly, Disney has decided to keep the king rolling for another week and perhaps even a 4th week if so needed - details are being worked out. That puts it over the Blu-ray release date of October 4! Interesting to say the least...
Uncertain if that jaw dropping 92% of revenue coming from 3D has been maintained, but I suspect it has. More when I get it...

Today's call was made available in connection with AVATAR: SPECIAL EDITION which will be running in a limited engagement starting August 27.
I have broken down today's interview into segments listed below so you can quickly find your interest item, but of course I recommend listening to the whole thing!
With all the recent hoopla over 3D conversions and the ridiculous stories that 3D is dying, it is so refreshing to hear from the man that really started it all for modern 3D in Hollywood (along with Mr. Katzenberg of course). Have a listen!!
0:40 - Cameron confirms he is producing Guillermo del Toro's AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS. The movie will be shot in native 3D using next generation FUSION 3D cameras from Pace. The project came up only 2 or 3 weeks ago when Cameron asked about if del Toro was still interested in it. As del Toro was clearly excited to do it, Cameron said "let's do it". They took it to Universal with both of them attached to the fast tracked project and now it looks like it will be going in the 2nd quarter of 2011.
2:30 - Cameron talks about 3D conversions. TITANIC's conversion is taking 8 months to a year to complete, not a fast turnaround like CLASH OF THE TITANS. Cameron: "(TITANS) showed a fundamental lack of knowledge about stereo space, in addition to the shoddy work that comes from rushing."Cameron likes TITANS in 2D as do I (I have had the Blu-ray since it was released) from a directorial standpoint and as a fan of Sam Worthington.
5:00 - Cameron on how they are technically converting TITANIC."You just can't cut out edges, you're going to get flat people moving around." He will be using all his knowledge to put things on their right depth planes. They had tests for TITANIC from seven different conversion vendors on the exact same shots and they got back seven different answers as to were they thought things were spatially. "Some of them were not bad guesses and some of them were ridiculous."
6:50 - The whole argument about conversion will go away for high end, first run 3D. Two years from now when there are thousands of 3D cameras out their shooting live feeds to 3D broadcast networks, how can a producer go to a studio and say: "I can't shoot 3D. It's too difficult. There are too many problems. It costs too much. It adds 6 months to post-production. They won't be able to say any of that stuff. That stuff is all garbage."
9:05 - Cameron on talking with Steven Spielberg about converting his classic movies to 3D. "Make sure you are there for (the conversions), then it can be great."
11:20 - Cameron talks about AVATAR 2's current status. He has an overall story arc for 2 and 3, but has some modifications for that after spending some time during the last few months with native tribes in the Amazon basin. Script will be a ways out yet for AVATAR 2.
12:04 - He is focusing his writing right now on the AVATAR novel (corresponds to the first film) and that will take him the next couple of months to bang out. Not sure when it will be coming out, perhaps the end of the year or the first quarter of 2011.
12:45 - The AVATAR re-release will have 9 extra minutes, not 8 and it will all be CG. No extra footage of live action characters drinking coffee. Rainforest; some at night; a hunt sequence - a lot of flying; high impact action; an emotional scene toward the end has been added back; "the best CG in the film has been added as far as facial performance"; A Na'vi counterattack after the bulldozer attack; more of Grace at the school; adding the Stingbat and Sturmbeast creatures; additional Quaritch final AMP Suit battle shots; more of the glade love scene. It is all on par with the best of the rest of the film. They had lots of footage to choose from and they put back the absolute best scenes and shots they could.
15:45 - Cameron does not have the release timing of the 3D Blu-ray as they want to have a nice distribution of 3DTVs in homes. He has seen the 3D master run on consumer 3DTVs from Panasonic and Samsung and "It looks amazing. It looks really spectacular."

I have the 2D blu-ray of AVATAR but it does it no justice when compared to big screen 3D. Count me at the head of the line!
A full 8 minutes of additional footage will be included.
Personally, I will be looking for clues as to what might make it into the sequel(s). Take this screencap from the trailer for example - Jake is playing with a mobile depicting the gas giant Polyphemus and its moons (including Pandora). QUESTION: How does a bow and arrow culture know about the shape and color of their own planet? Were they taught by humans, like Grace? Interesting!
Finally some details on the long anticipated re-release of the biggest movie of all time! AVATAR will be launched for a second time on August 27 with an extra 8 minutes of new footage.
Here is the press release: Twentieth Century Fox and James Cameron announced that AVATAR: SPECIAL EDITION will be released in theaters August 27, in a limited engagement and exclusively in Digital 3D and IMAX 3D.
This version of Cameron’s history-making and groundbreaking epic will include more than eight minutes of new footage. Since – and largely as of result of -- AVATAR’s release last December, the number of available digital 3D screens has exploded, and moviegoers who missed experiencing the film in 3D will now have that opportunity.

The Oscar and Golden Globe winning epic is the highest grossing film of all time, taking in over $2.7 billion in worldwide box office. It is also the top-selling Blu-ray disc of all time.

Jim here. Wow - exciting news indeed. Yesterday we learned that TITANIC will be most likely delivered in the spring of 2012 and that AVATAR will probably be re-released this fall.
Now comes word from THR that the re-release could happen as early as this summer and ADDITIONAL FOOTAGE will be included!!
How MUCH additional footage?It seems that there are two likely scenarios:Adding 10 minutes of scenes (like Tsu Tey's ritual and Jake Sully proving himself to the Na'vi) that have already been through post production (just enough to still allow IMAX 3D to screen it too) *OR* adding 40 minutes of scenes that would have to be processed to be included. I am wagering for the first option but hoping for the second. Realistically though, it will be the 10 minutes. They need something extra for the S3DHD Blu-ray right? The 40 minutes will be more than likely going there .
So what do you think? Awesome news right!!? How much additional footage do you think will make the summer re-release?
Jim here. James Cameron has announced his intentions for the release of TITANIC in S3D after he filmed the Black Eyed Peas and their unannounced concert in New York's Times Square (via USAToday). AND he lets us know about a potential re-release of AVATAR!
Cameron said:"We're targeting spring of 2012 for the release (of a 3D version of Titanic), which is the 100 year anniversary of the sailing of the ship."
TITANIC is a gorgeous motion picture. To see it in 3D and get that immersive feeling surrounding you should be amazing. Water rushing toward you while you are hanging on to the bow of the boat as she goes down? Intense stuff.
And just as I had speculated a few times it looks like there is serious potential to re-release AVATAR this coming fall. Cameron tells us this in response to a question of when we might see the release of AVATAR on 3D Blu-ray: "We're not officially announcing it right now but I'm hoping for fall. The wildcard is that we might be re-releasing the movie this fall. It's kind of gotten stomped out (in theaters) because of Alice in Wonderland. The word we're getting back from exhibitors is we probably left a couple of hundred million dollars on the table as a result."
Great to hear these things from the man himself! It makes perfect sense to me - I would have liked to have seen just how far AVATAR could have gone. It certainly deserves an encore don't you think? :-)
