The marketing team at Fox sure know what they doing and I can name them without hesitation as the best in the business right now. From AVATAR to PROMETHEUS, these guys can promote Sci-fi like nobody's business.
This clip harkens back to the days where all anyone had was their livingroom radio to listen to for entertainment. Your imagination soars. Visual imagery appears in your mind and in this case sees the worst possible outcome from your own interpretation of what's going on. Everyone will imagine this slightly differently. That's why this bit of marketing is genius. It's going to pull everyone in from all walks of life that hear it because it resonates. Visuals can sometimes put some folks off - a failure to suspend disbelief. But with audio... you can't lose (if you're halfway decent at editing!).
The clip originated with the German site Blogbusters who received an audio viral puzzle to figure out. It was soon discovered that if the clip was played backward it made sense.
So with that, have a listen if you dare. In as much as you can't see anything, the audio is visceral.
Here is the movie's storyline:
Ridley Scott, director of “Alien” and “Blade Runner,” returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.
