Filmed over a 5-year span in the waters of French Polynesia, Hawaii, Alaska and beyond, the film follows a mother humpback whale and her newborn calf in a “coming of age” journey. Another highlight of the Festival will be the World Premiere of the 3D concert film and documentary on Cui Jian, China’s “godfather of rock’n’roll,” titled “NOTHING TO MY NAME,” (previously titled “Stereo Symphony on the New Long March”) produced by 3D China LTD.

This year, the Festival features its popular Kids & Family afternoon with major studios contributing blockbuster 3D films such as Paramount’s “KUNG FU PANDA 2” and Warner Bros.’ “GREEN LANTERN,” which will make up one half of the 3D Comic Book Movie Double Feature being held in partnership with the Los Angeles Comic Con. Additionally, other programming blocks include the popular Midnight 3D Horror Show and the 3ology Series featuring a wide selection of 3D shorts, commercials, and experimental films from around the world.

In keeping with 3DFF’s commitment to education, the Los Angeles Film School’s new RealD theater, where the majority of the Festival’s 3D fare will screen, will also function as a classroom for the Festival’s 3D Academy Workshop programs, which will be held on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The 3D Academy will host 3D industry panels on Advertising, 3D Camera & Post Workflows, Content Distribution and Motion Capture.

The 3D Lounge returns and will be home to the Korean and Chinese 3D pavilion as the Festival hosts guest speakers from Korea’s KDC Corporation, a pioneering force in Asia working to unify the Korean, Chinese, and American 3D Industries.

The new 3D Music Festival, running in tandem with the Film Festival, will operate nightly at Avalon Hollywood and will feature a variety of live performances all in 3D along with celebrity DJ’s and concert film screenings. Celebrity clothing designer Alexis Monsanto will help kick off the Music Festival on Thursday night with the first of its kind 3D Fashion Show. Other music programs includes the “3D Comedy and Variety Show” featuring Chicago’s own Amy & Freddy headlining with the Comedy Store’s Adam Barnhardt, both of whom will perform live in 3D for the first time using custom created 3D visuals produced by 3DFF and Arcane Realities.

The Festival will wrap up on Sunday evening with its Closing Night Gala featuring the “Disclosure Concert,” a series of 3D music performances inspired by the work of Dr. Steven Greer and his DisclosureProject.org. Other closing night activities will include a 3D Light Parade with the Hollywood High Marching Band, Cheerleaders and Glee Club.

IRON DOORS 3D Wins Best 3D Feature Award!

Nice job! We reported last month that IRON DOORS 3D was being presented at the 3DFF and they pulled it off and won first place at the festival in Los Angeles!

First photo has Axel Wedekind, Alexandre Aja and Stephen Manuel, left to right. The second shot has Manuel, Wedekind and Thomas Jane.

Here is the official press release (seen exclusively here first!):
San Diego-based 3D Production studio PassmoreLab and FullFeedback Productions of Germany took home first place at the 3D Film Festival in Hollywood last night for their new independent film “Iron Doors 3D”. The partners took home the top prize in the 3D Narrative Feature Film (Conversion) category.

The film world-premiered at the Los Angeles Film School during 3DFF in Hollywood, with a full red carpet press event and screening.

The feature was directed by Stephen Manuel and stars Axel Wedekind. PassmoreLab handled all aspects of 3D production out of San Diego.

“We are honored to accept this award from 3DFF, and we also want to thank Stephen for trusting and allowing us the creative freedom to use stereoscopy as a gentle storytelling tool. The best part is that this award confirms the validity of this approach to the film,” said Greg Passmore, president of PassmoreLab. “We chose to use depth as a tool and not a gimmick. Iron Doors is a film that uses 3D, rather than it being a ‘3D film’. In the early days of computer graphics, there were a whole slew of CGI films. Eventually, those using CGI stopped being referred to as "CGI films" -- for example, District 9 -- an effects film where the effects are not the point. That’s what we did with Iron Doors - not poke the viewer in the eye or throw things at the camera – but use 3D to help provide a sense of presence for the viewer.”

The film is a tale of one man’s intense struggle to free himself from inside a locked vault. He has no idea how he got in the vault – or how to get out – but he somehow must escape before he dies of dehydration.

“As a filmmaker, you always hope the audience can grasp the vision you have in your head,“ said Director Stephen Manuel. “The way we used 3D in this film really helped to draw the audience in on the intense claustrophobia of the story. You feel like you are actually inside the vault.”

“Iron Doors 3D” is the first collaboration between PassmoreLab and Fullfeedback Productions. The film’s European premiere takes place on October 7 at the Raindance Film Festival (http://www.raindance.co.uk) in London, England.

Exclusive: IRON DOORS 3D Ready To Be Swung Open October 1!

Our friends at PassmoreLab are presenting what seems to be a pretty cool psychological thriller entitled IRON DOORS 3D at the 3DFF on Friday, October 1 in Los Angeles. PassmoreLab was in charge of the 3D and the 80 minute feature film was directed by Stephen Manual and stars Axel Wedekind. Read more about Wedekind's method acting in MarketSaw's exclusive release below.

Link to the trailer is in the green text at the bottom of the post!

Here's the exclusive press release found here first (emphasis is mine)!

Indie psycho thriller “Iron Doors 3D” will premiere on Friday, October 1st as part of the 3DFF Hollywood at the Los Angeles Film School (LAFS) located in the heart of the stunningly redesigned Sunset and Vine district of Hollywood, it was announced today in a joint statement by San Diego-based 3D Production studio PassmoreLab and Fullfeedback Productions of Germany.

The 80-minute feature was directed by Stephen Manuel and stars Axel Wedekind. PassmoreLab handled all aspects of 3D production out of San Diego.

“I had a good feeling about this film,” said Greg Passmore, president of PassmoreLab. “It captured my imagination from the start, and it has quite an unusual approach to the conventional what’s-behind-that-freaky-door fright flick. I knew this deviant, claustrophobic story would translate well into 3D.”

The film is a twisted tale of one man’s intense struggle to free himself from inside a menacing locked vault. He must escape before he dies of dehydration, and is only companions are a locked steel cabinet, a swarm of flies, and a dead rat. He has no idea how he got in the vault. Or how to get out.

Using RED camera technology, the film was shot in sequence in just ten days. Wedekind’s role called for his character to go without food and water for days, so he took the method approach to his acting. His daily diet consisted of an apple in the morning and a small piece of chicken at night, with nothing in between. He limited himself to drinking only half a litre of water each day, getting very close to actual dehydration. In order to appear gaunt and overtired, he constantly did pushups in between takes. After the 10 days of production, he had lost 15 lbs.

“This project is not just another horror film, and I can tell you I gave it everything I had,” said Axel Wedekind. “It’s scary, creepy and even funny at times, with deeper layers of meaning hidden just beneath the surface of the action on the screen. Definitely expect the unexpected.“

The World Premiere of “Iron Doors 3D” will take place at the Los Angeles Film School in Hollywood on Friday, October 1st at 5pm, as part of the 3DFF Hollywood, with a full red carpet press event screening and film market for distributors.

“We are thrilled to hold the World Premiere of “Iron Doors 3D” at a facility dedicated to aspiring filmmakers,” said Steve Glum, PassmoreLab's head of Branding & Distribution. “We are delighted to be a part of the 3DFF Hollywood, and we are eager to showcase this film to the industry.”

“Iron Doors 3D” is the first collaboration between PassmoreLab and Fullfeedback Productions. Jinga Films of England is the film’s sales agent. The film’s European premiere will be held six days later at the Raindance Film Festival (http://www.raindance.co.uk) in London, England.

Independent 3D Filmmakers Rejoice: Low Cost 3D Camera RIGS Now Available

Jim here. We have talked a lot about the RED and SI digital cameras in stereo 3D configuration and with good reason - great performance and great value. But with these cameras and others, many independent filmmakers have taken to creating their own 3D rigs to house these cameras for shooting side by side. The frustrations must be endless.

Seems we have a potential solution for you as of TODAY from 3D Film Factory (although the RED One for example would require a custom rig built. The suggested cameras are as follows: Canon - XH-G1(S), XH-A1, XL-H1, XL2; Sony - HDR-FX1, HDR-Z1U, HVR-Z7U, PMW-EX3, PMW-EX1; Panasonic - DVX100, DVX100A, DVX100, DVX200, DVX200A; and JVC - HD250U, HM700U. Here are snippets from their press release:

3D Film Factory has developed a line of production-ready, cost-effective, 3D camera systems designed to shoot superior 3D. Developed over the course of several years, with the guidance of veteran stereographers and award-winning filmmakers, these durable, dual camera rigs provide an alternative to the high-priced 3D systems costing ten times as much.

The company has released for sale three select systems; the 3D-SB (split-beam), 3D-SS Indie (side-by-side), and the 3D-SS Pro (side-by-side) models. Each system is designed for a specific production purpose and to accommodate various prosumer and professional grade SD and HD cameras.

3DFF president Karl Kozak said "...we’re filling a niche, offering great rigs, that shoot incredible 3D, for a fraction of the cost.”

The 3D-SB (split-beam) system is constructed using black anodized aluminum that’s virtually indestructible and light-absorbing, removable plastic. With a total weight of only 22 lbs., the rig is easy-to-use, allowing for quick set-ups and precise 3D alignment. It’s being introduced for a complete price of $1,995.

Split-beam rigs are mandatory for the smaller (6” to 0”) inter-axial (camera-to-camera) distances needed for medium and close-up shots. Such inter-axial distances can only be achieved with adjustable camera positions and the use of scientifically engineered glass. During shooting, the image for the horizontal camera passes directly through the glass, while the vertical camera’s image is reflected off the front of glass. In effect, the two cameras are stacked sharing almost the exact same field of vision.

“Side-by-side camera configurations can’t be used for close-up shots for good reason, it hurts the eyes,” said Kozak. “You have to get the cameras closer than camera bodies and hoods will allow for. That’s why you need a split-beam rig.”

The company’s two side-by-side 3D rigs are less complex, but equally necessary in most 3D production situations. Side-by-side systems are specifically designed for filming master to panoramic shots in 3D. In this case, the simple side-by-side camera posture allows for fast, accurate 3D alignment and unobstructed shooting.

Both 3D-SS systems weigh less than 4 lbs., are priced at about $300, and boast inter-axial (camera to camera) distances from about 6” to 24”. All of the company’s rigs are constructed using a virtually indestructible aluminum frame.

All three camera systems are available @ www.3DfilmFactory.com

The 3D Film Factory is a San Diego-based company specializing in the production of original 3D entertainment and high-quality 2D-to-3D conversion.
This is the innovation I love to hear about as companies are starting to see the gaps of need in the 3D industry and endeavoring to fill them. Would like to see an off the shelf version of these for the RED Ones though guys!

3DFF Will Have 3D Film & Interactive Lounge: iZ3D To Provide Gaming Stations

iZ3D is a Sponsor of the World’s First Digital 3-D Film and Interactive Festival
Company will provide 3D Gaming Stations in “The 3-D Film & Interactive Lounge”

San Diego, Calif. (October 8, 2008) – iZ3D, LLC, designer, developer, and pioneer of advanced 3D visualization systems, is pleased to announce that it is among the notable 3D industry sponsors of the world’s first digital “3-D Film & Interactive Festival” (3DFF). The festivities will begin on October 10 – 12, 2008 in Orlando, Florida and will continue October 17 – 19 in Cocoa Beach via “The 3-D Film & Interactive Lounge.”The event is slated to be the first competitive, entirely digital 3D stereoscopic  film festival in the world. For more information visit www.3DFF.org.

“3DFF is pleased to have iZ3D and its popular 3D monitors as a sponsor. The key to driving new technologies forward is great content. By educating and honoring 3D content pioneers as well as innovative technologists and groundbreaking hardware companies, we will further the entire entertainment industry. We are hoping these events will also generate funds for our 3-D Film Preservation Fund dedicated to finding, conserving, restoring and ultimately digitizing historical 3D films,” commented The Dream Factory Studio’s Chief Creative Officer and Founder of 3DFF Christopher Crescitelli.

iZ3D will be featured during the 3DFF festivities in the Cocoa Beach Hilton Oceanfront for its three- day Space Coast Edition  from October 17 through October 19. The venue will feature “The 3-D Film & Interactive Lounge” where attendees will learn about advanced 3D displays and 3D video game presentations by leading 3D technology companies. The “3-D Film & Interactive Lounge” will also tour the film festival circuit as part of a 3D outreach program.

"As a pioneer in this industry, iZ3D is pleased to support events that educate content creators on the benefits of stereoscopic 3D imagery to help them tell a story. We feel 3DFF’s non-profit initiative to acknowledge up and coming independent 3D producers and directors, emerging gaming technologies and other new content creators will propel the entire 3D industry forward,” remarked Thomas Striegler, CEO of iZ3D, LLC.

iZ3D monitors feature significant advantages over other 3D display systems. Gamers that want to experience spectacular game graphics will appreciate playing in stereoscopic 3D. Graphic artists have embraced the iZ3D monitor as an essential tool for 3D design. It is difficult to create images in 3D while viewing the design on a flat 2D screen.  Movie buffs can now bring the thrill of a 3D movie to their home theater system.

The company developed this technology to create an adjustable 3D environment without eyestrain, spatial disorientation, or headaches. In 3D mode, viewers can see sharp 3D images and video by wearing iZ3D passive polarized glasses. Existing PCs equipped with a dual-output video card powers the display. Specifications include: 1680 x 1050 resolution; up to 170-degree 3D viewing angle; 5ms response time; 700:1 contrast ratio; and 16.7-million colors. The monitor is available at www.pcmall.com, http://www.amazon.com and www.iZ3D.com.
