Romantic Comedy 40 BELOW AND FALLING Shooting In Native 3D 4K - Yours Truly A Producer!

I am so very excited to finally announce that I am a producer on our soon to be shot romantic comedy 40 BELOW AND FALLING 3D starring Jewel Staite (FIREFLY, SERENITY, THE KILLING) and Shawn Roberts (RESIDENT EVIL, X-MEN and EDGE OF DARKNESS). I'm working with an outstanding team of individuals led by Executive Producer Darren Arsenault, Producer Andrew Scholotiuk; and Director Dylan Pearce - this is definitely a movie you'll want to see.

Our stereographer Dylan Reade has done amazing work with IMAX (HUBBLE 3D, UNDER THE SEA 3D, JOURNEY TO THE SOUTH PACIFIC) and I'm looking forward to see the magic that he and Pierce will create in the Canadian west.

Casting Jewel Staite as Kate and Shawn Roberts as Redford is a perfect combination for the story - their personas that you've seen thus far in their careers amplify the characters in 40 BELOW.

40 BELOW AND FALLING is going into principal photography this month in gorgeous native 3D and in 4K on location in stunning Alberta, Canada.

Be sure to check out our website 40belowandfalling.com, Facebook and Twitter.

Here's our official boilerplate:
It’s not the latest Canadian weather forecast, but the title of the newest feature film being brought to you by innovative production company 12pt Media. Directed by Dylan Pearce, the Romantic Adventure/Comedy will be unique to its genre, being one of the first ever to be shot in both 2D and 3D. Whether or not you’re a fan of heavy snowfalls, this feature film will leave you falling in love with winter.

Starring high in demand Canadian actress Jewel Staite (series regular on Joss Whedon’s hit TV show Firefly and his feature film Serenity, and star of the AMC/Netflix drama series The Killing) and Canadian actor Shawn Roberts (star in the hit movie franchise Resident Evil, co-star in Edge of Darkness, and X-Men) – 40 Below and Falling tells the story of Kate Carter, a teacher from a small, Northern Canadian town, who is moving back to the big city for her wedding. After quitting her job and packing up her life, Kate feels certain that this is the future she has always wanted – that is until her flight gets cancelled by a blizzard and she meets a surly stranger named Redford. With all road travel being suspended, Kate is forced to hop on the back of Redford’s snowmobile and embark on an adventure that will leave her questioning the decision she has made about the man she is set to marry.

The movie will capture the beauty of the Canadian Rockies, small town Alberta, and the city of Edmonton, all with groundbreaking 3D 4K technology brought to life by production company 12pt media. 12pt Media is a new company run by – Producer Andrew Scholotiuk, Executive Producer Darren Arsenault, and Director Dylan Pearce. Previous works include the Canadian and international hits I Think I Do and Baby Blues.

40 Below and Falling is also produced in association with the Edmonton Film Fund, The Alberta Media Fund and The Canadian Film or Video Tax Production Credit Program and Associate Producer Jim Dorey - host of the online 3D site MarketSaw.com. The film is currently scheduled to be broadcast in Canada on Super Channel in the fall of 2015, with an international release being handled by distributor DARO Films out of Monaco.

Stay tuned for more exciting news as winter unfolds on our set of 40 Below and Falling! Rest assured I will have some very interesting interviews, behind the scenes videos, clips and more.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Spoilers And Opening Date For The UK Is One Week Early

Let's get the non-spoiler item out of the way first. J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS will be opening a week earlier in the UK than in North America with the UK enjoying a May 9 launch (all formats according to Simon Pegg) and across the pond in the US and Canada, a May 17 date (May 15 in IMAX).

Now let's get something straight about these spoilers. I'm against them. I'm literally against reading them and - get this - I haven't. I am blind copying and pasting this info for those of you who do want to be spoiled for this much anticipated movie. I can't bring myself to read it because I am a die hard Trekkie and I refuse to not see this thing in a pristine form.

SO. If you don't mind being spoiled - these are MASSIVE spoilers by the way - then read on. I know they're massive by the reception it's getting. Whoever wrote this in Brazil broke many a cardinal rule in doing so and he should be banned from the web. Can't stop it now - it's on the Internet and with a life of its own.

**SPOILERS AHEAD** Read at your own risk. This is YOUR decision NOT mine to read this. Know that now. I HAVE NOT and will not read it.

Hit the jump for more...

Empire Theatres Introducing "Empire Extra" And Three More IMAX Screens!

Exciting news for Canadians! Empire Theatres are expanding their value added services to movie goers and I am impressed. They have two announcements to comment on - here are the official press releases (emphasis is mine):

--
Halifax, NS - Empire Theatres, a Canada-wide film exhibition company, will be introducing Empire Extra, a revolutionary new digital cinema experience, to five additional locations this year.

Empire Extra provides guests with a heightened sensory experience in a special auditorium custom-designed to offer dynamic sound, screen and seat quality. Empire Extra boasts a proprietary custom-designed multi-channel sound system for the ultimate audio experience; stunning digital presentation on a massive, wall to wall wrap-around screen; and reserved seating in comfy, high back rockers.

Empire Extra was first introduced to the new Empire Theatres Waterloo complex in Waterloo, ON which opened in November 2010. Due to its success and positive guest feedback, it will now be introduced to the following locations over the next few months:

- Empire Theatres Dartmouth Crossing, Dartmouth, NS
- Empire Theatres Empress Walk, Toronto, ON
- Empire Theatres MacLeod Trail, Calgary, AB
- Empire Theatres Crystal Palace, Dieppe, NB
- Empire Theatres Orleans, Orleans, ON

“Empire Extra has been a hit with guests in our Waterloo, ON location. They love the outstanding movie-going experience so we have decided to introduce it to a few other locations in time for summer,” says Dean Leland, Vice President - Studio Relations & Media, Empire Theatres.

--AND--

Halifax, NS and Toronto, ON - Empire Theatres, a Canada-wide film exhibition company with 50 theatres, and IMAX Corp. (NYSE: IMAX) (TSX: IMAX) announced today that Empire Theatres will be adding three new IMAX digital theatres to its network this year.

In addition to an existing location in Halifax, NS, the following theatres in the Empire Theatres network have been chosen to deliver The IMAX Experience®:

Empire Theatres Country Hills, Calgary, AB

Empire Theatres Kitchener, Kitchener, ON
Empire Theatres Avalon Mall, St. John’s, NL

The Empire Theatres Bayers Lake, Halifax, NS IMAX screen will be converted from film to digital projection to allow for a greater range of IMAX blockbuster hits to be shown.

“We are excited to partner once again with IMAX Corporation to bring The IMAX Experience® to our theatres in these markets,” says Dean Leland, Vice President, Studio & Media Relations, Empire Theatres. “IMAX delivers premium viewing experiences in both digital and 3D that our guests are looking for.”

IMAX offers cutting-edge digital 2D and 3D picture and sound technologies that deliver a superior movie-going experience on a larger screen with crystal-clear images and enhanced sound. IMAX theatres deliver the world's best cinematic presentations using proprietary IMAX, IMAX® 3D, and IMAX DMR® technology, creating an immersive experience that will make guests feel like they are a part of the movie.

“Today’s announcement highlights our commitment to expanding in the Canadian market, and to continuing our successful work with key partners like Empire Theatres,” said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. “With these three new systems, we are scheduled to have 22 commercial theatres operating in Canada by November, more than double the size of our Canadian commercial theatre network as of November 2010."

The Empire Theatres Country Hills, AB, Empire Theatres Kitchener, ON and Empire Theatres Bayers Lake, NS locations will be open for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2: An IMAX 3D Experience on July 15, 2011. The Empire Theatres Avalon Mall, NL location will be open in September 2011.

The industry's top filmmakers and studios are utilizing IMAX theatres to connect with audiences in extraordinary ways, and as such, the IMAX network is among the most important and successful theatrical distribution platforms for major event films around the globe. IMAX theatres deliver the world's best cinematic presentations using proprietary IMAX®, IMAX 3D®, and IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-Mastering) technologies. IMAX DMR enables virtually any motion picture to be transformed into the unparalleled image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience®. IMAX is headquartered in New York, Toronto and Los Angeles, with offices in London, Tokyo and Shanghai. As of March 31, 2011, there were 528 IMAX theatres (408 commercial, 120 institutional) operating in 46 countries.

--

I wish I had some figures to pass on to you about the new IMAX Digital Screens because in the past there has been a lot of negative things said about the size of some of their screens and resolution. I AM SURE that these issues are in their past and that the experience will be a massive improvement over what happened a few years ago. I am looking forward to stunning digital clarity on regulation sized IMAX screens. Nothing less will do. I'll ask and see if I can get some numbers for you.

The "Empire Extra" availability sounds right on the money! Can't wait to see it. There has been a movement to these added services in recent years with chains like the Alamo Drafthouse blazing trails (food & licensed beverage service to your seat). Perhaps we will see this in Canada at some point down the road as well. I'm just excited to have these improvements coming right now!!

Congratulations Empire Theatres!!

EXCLUSIVE: Slash Airs New Music Video in 3D in Canada

Another exclusive for MarketSaw readers from our friends at PassmoreLab in San Diego! Famed rock guitarist Slash is launching his new stereoscopic 3D music video from his super hot 2010 album to viewers in Canada via Rogers...

Here is the press release one day in advance (emphasis is mine):
San Diego, CA (Nov 9, 2010) – Slash’s 3D music video, “By the Sword”, the first video off of his #1 Rock Album SLASH, which hit retail in April and has received rave reviews worldwide, is now being be broadcast in 3D and available exclusively to customers of Rogers Communications Inc. in Canada, it was announced today in a joint statement by San Diego-based 3D Production studio PassmoreLab & Slash.

The 5-minute 3D rock video, “By The Sword”, is the first video ever from Slash to be released in 3D. It features the vocals of Andrew Stockdale of Wolfmother, and Slash’s signature shredding.

“It’s really cool to be broadcast in 3D in Canada,” said Slash.

SLASH hit the charts on April 6. Featuring an incredible lineup of rockers and vocalists like Kid Rock, Dave Grohl, Myles Kennedy, Fergie, Adam Levine, Chris Cornell, Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop, and more, the album has been critically-acclaimed all over the world.

PassmoreLab produced all 3D aspects of the video, which was released internationally in theatres in August. The 3D video has never been aired before on 3D TV.

“My guess is Canadians may need to buy their 3D TVs twice now because of Slash,” says Steve Glum, PassmoreLab's head of Branding & Distribution. “They will buy one the first time just so they can see Slash rock out in 3D. Then they’ll have to go buy another 3D TV because their kids blew out their speakers in the first one.”

The “By The Sword, in 3D!” video is set in a post-apocalyptic future, in a deserted power plant where people are starved for music. And that’s where Slash and the band are found mesmerizing an audience.

“Rock ‘n Roll is universal, and Slash is an icon,” continues Steve Glum. “This is a historic moment, a new chapter in entertainment programming, akin to when MTV launched. Everybody will remember that when 3D TV hit Canada, the first thing they saw was Slash.”

Slash’s "By The Sword, in 3D!” can be seen 24/7 starting today on Rogers Digital TV Channel 900, free to Rogers Digital Cable subscribers.

About Slash
Slash is widely considered one of the greatest rock guitar players of all time. He has received countless accolades and awards including a 2007 star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame alongside his idols Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix. An original member of iconic rock band Guns N’ Roses, Slash helped the band create signature sounds like the guitar riff of #1 hit “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and “Welcome To The Jungle.” The band dominated the 1980’s and 90’s music scene selling more than 100 million albums worldwide and ushered in a decade of hard charging rock music. After leaving the band, Slash went on to critical acclaim in his personal project Slash’s Snakepit, and global success with supergroup Velvet Revolver. He has been widely sought after by the biggest musicians of all time, performing with everyone from Michael Jackson to Stevie Wonder to Ray Charles. Slash is one of the marquee playable characters in Guitar Hero III, has two signature Gibson guitars in his name, and authored his own top-selling biography Slash in 2007. Slash recently landed on the top of the charts with his first true solo album, SLASH, which debuted as #1 Rock Album and #3 overall on Billboard’s coveted Top 200 charts, in addition to going #1 in more than 13 countries. The album features an all-star roster of guest musicians including Ian Astbury, Chris Cornell, Rocco DeLuca, Fergie, Dave Grohl, Myles Kennedy, Kid Rock, Lemmy Kilmister, Adam Levine of Maroon 5, Duff McKagan, M. Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold, Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop, and Andrew Stockdale of Wolfmother. In addition to a long career filled with prestigious awards and accolades, Slash was just honored this week by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce who named him as an official selection for 2011 to receive a star on Hollywood’s iconic Walk of Fame. A date for the ceremony has yet to be determined. For information, visit www.slashonline.com.
