WARCRAFT Powerleveling In China! $145 Million In 4 Days

Contrary to many critics I enjoyed WARCRAFT. Perhaps it's because I've actually played the game and I can pick up on most of the locations and references - it's still a CGI powerhouse and the 3D is amazing.

The 3D is amazing because most of it's pure digital 3D that's well done. It's a positive byproduct of doing most of the movie with CG characters and backgrounds. Loved the action sequences and how it all looked on a giant IMAX 3D screen. I'll be seeing it again on a Real D screen and I'm sure the level of excellence will be the same for stereo enjoyment.

WARCRAFT is the fastest international movie to $135 million ever in China. The movie only opened to $27 million in North America. I love how the movie has bounced back against the critics in China. Absolutely love it.

The story is somewhat hard to follow at times for someone who has not played the game I would imagine, but even if you haven't the visual effects are jaw dropping. The scale of the movie is off the charts.

WARCRAFT is a definite must-see in 3D. The stereo view enhances the CGI and makes the characters much more realistic and closer to crossing the uncanny valley. Trust me. 3D makes this movie.

Check the latest TV Spot for Duncan Jones' WARCRAFT based on the popular MMORPG from Blizzard Entertainment, World of Warcraft. This is looking GOOD. I was skeptical at first because video game adaptations for the big screen do not have a great reputation, but I did have confidence in Jones to deliver something palatable. And so he has!

I can see the character traits exploding from these creatures and the casting seems particularly well done. The effects? Staggering! Looks amazing. Can't wait!!

MUST WATCH: New International Trailer For STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

Well hello. This new Japanese trailer for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS looks stunning! Many new scenes and not too much given away regarding spoilers - although more than what we're used to from Abrams. Certainly there are visual spoilers and characters have their closeups but don't be worried about learning too much of the storyline. That being said, this trailer goes into more depth than the domestic materials so as usual you are being warned.

And... the poster is new as well! Adam Driver's Kylo Ren dominates the new Korean poster and it looks sensational.

SWTFA is going to look amazing in 3D. I've got that feeling. I think everything about this movie is going to be perfect. The story, the imagery, the soundtrack, the characters, the soul. The pressure on JJ Abrams to deliver this thing must be off the scales, but he seems to be taking everything in stride. I've seen the domestic trailer in IMAX and it brings chills. Can't wait for its 3D.

I've already have my ticket bought for opening night and I urge you to buy ahead of time as well. You'll want to see this thing early to 1. enjoy it and 2. avoid the spoilers that will undoubtedly be flying EVERYWHERE on social media the day after opening.

Definitely a movie made for 3D! Some of these shots are simply spectacular.

We see some angles that would make Sir Edmund Hillary himself shudder I'm sure! I'm intrigued with the casting as well; looks like a wonderful performance from Jason Clarke. You can feel the obsession in them all.

Here's the movie's storyline:
Inspired by the incredible events surrounding an attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain, Everest documents the awe-inspiring journey of two different expeditions challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind. Their mettle tested by the harshest elements found on the planet, the climbers will face nearly impossible obstacles as a lifelong obsession becomes a breathtaking struggle for survival. Both EVEREST and THE WALK Will Open Early In IMAX 3D

**UPDATE: 28 June - Just heard from 3ality that they in fact did NOT do native 3D on this production - so it's a conversion too. A battle between conversion houses it is then. Too bad.


Yes! Love when IMAX does this: They've announced that both EVEREST and THE WALK will open on September 18th and the 30th respectfully - ahead of their wide release dates.

EVEREST is a true story about a team's ascent to the highest peak in the world while THE WALK is the true story of Philippe Petit's attempt to cross the distance between the top of the World Trade Centers in NYC.

Correction: Both of these two IMAX 3D releases are 3D conversions. I can't wait to compare them because of their close release dates and both showing in the large format. I will also include comment on how the RealD projection is for comparison - I do have a RealD PLF (premium large format) screen here in town. I will definitely give these two a competitive review, head to head.

Here's the storyline for EVEREST:
This is the story of the 1996 Everest Film Expedition, a MacGillivray Freeman production in association with Arcturus Motion Pictures. Filmed in IMAX photography, EVEREST is the dramatic true story of a team of climbers who found hope, strength and triumph in the wake of tragedy. We already knew about TERMINATOR: GENISYS being released in 3D, but now word has dropped that the movie will also see a release in IMAX 3D.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
The year is 2029. John Connor, leader of the resistance continues the war against the machines. At the Los Angeles offensive, John’s fears of the unknown future begin to emerge when TECOM spies reveal a new plot by SkyNet that will attack him from both fronts; past and future, and will ultimately change warfare forever.

Movie Review - THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES - 9.1 Stars!

Peter Jackson has done it again. He has nailed the genre and no one is better on the face of the earth in bringing such to the big screen. Furthermore Jackson is spearheading the future of cinema with his outstanding use of stereoscopic native 3D (using rigs from 3ality Technica) and High Frame Rates (48 fps).

That said, one really does have to watch all three Hobbit movies one after the other to get a sense of story and character development and so as a standalone movie I have to score those aspects much lower than I would if all three movies were one. I would wager most movie goers will have seen the previous two Hobbit movies however and the best way to see the whole story is to watch them all back to back to back.

I won't spoil the movie for those of you who haven't seen it as of yet. I will tell it is more of what you have come to expect from Peter Jackson and company. Thrilling adventure, magnificent characters and epic battles. Everything is as it should be from Howard Shore's magnificent score to the visuals to the acting performances.

I'll briefly diverge here for a moment. The sole operator of movie theaters in my area, Cineplex, has decided to not distribute THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES in HFR in my area - perhaps all of Canada - I'm checking into this. I am extremely disappointed in this decision. They have no competition here and so I have no way of checking out the HFR version of the movie. So I apologize to you that I can't comment on the HFR . I will say that judging from previous movies I have seen I believe variable frame rate will be the way of the future in that portions of movies will be shown in HFR while the remainder will toggle back to 24 fps. This way the effect will not be jarring and HFR will only be used for moments that truly will shine with the technology - such as slow motion.

So what did I love about the movie? Certainly I will elaborate in detail in the comment section below where spoilers are encouraged, but to be honest, I loved the whole thing. I have some questions that I'd like your opinions on (again in the comments) but overall I have seen the movie twice now, one in IMAX 3D and the other in AVX (7.1) 3D and it just keeps getting better.

Some scenes are literally crying out for more - or origin stories - or just singular character stories; essentially I want Jackson to continue to make Middle-earth stories, but with his own original ideas within the world. Again I can't say more here, but I will below.

So the native 3D was outstanding! A perfect blend of function (immersion and excitement) with the practical (forgetting the 3D was even there). In other words, this 3D that was shot on the world's leading native 3D rigs from 3ality Technica was perfectly executed. I saw no flaws to speak of at all. Battle scenes were amazing. Sweeping shots of cities and towns along with the jaw dropping vistas of New Zealand's 3D Middle-earth were inspired and delectable. Intimate character shots were oh so real in native 3D!

The visual effects of the movie were definitely in the genre wheelhouse of Weta Digital and they brought them to us with unreal precision. Suspension of disbelief came easy for me when the extremes were handled with care - from decisive serious scenes to comedic scenes didn't make me think at all about how it was done, but simply to live it.

70% of the initial world box office was generated from 3D ticket sales for the movie, underscoring that 3D is now part of our culture. Can't wait to see what 2015's 3D movies have in store for us!

Sadly, this will be the last trip to Tolkien's world - unless we are very lucky. But it was as if Peter Jackson himself said: "If this is to be our end, then I would have them make such an end, as to be worthy of remembrance."

Says Gunn: "Just got out of working on the Guardians cut for IMAX 3D and I’m unbelievably excited about it. Guardians of the Galaxy has been planned as a 3D film from its very inception. Yes, if you see the film in 2D, you’ll get a full experience. But the 3D experience promises a little something extra. Unlike many directors, I’ve been actively involved with converting every shot to 3D, making sure it works perfectly for the story and the film, making sure it’s spectacular and immersive without being silly, distracting, or overly showy. 3D conversion was once far inferior to shooting in 3D, but over the past couple years new technology has allowed us incredible control over the 3D effects, making it equal to or in some cases greater than shooting in 3D.

As an EXTRA benefit for those who see the film in IMAX 3D, we will be changing aspect ratios throughout the film in a way that makes the experience even fuller and more encompassing. Hey North America: STALINGRAD Is In IMAX 3D Starting Tomorrow!

Here's your only opportunity to see the highest grossing Russian movie of all time on big screen and what better way then IMAX 3D!

I'm definitely going to check this thing out as I have only had a few scenes graciously made available to me while I was entertained at 3ality Technica's headquarters last year (they provided their 3D rigs, expertise and Steve Schlair is 3D Producer on the project). The trailer and visual fx look amazing! What I saw was just enough for me to be thrilled to hear that we're getting it in IMAX. I'm very interested in WWII's European Theater as well.

Whether you're a veteran, WWII historian or just someone who enjoys solid action, especially based in fact, then you'll love STALINGRAD.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
Written by Ilya Tilkin and Sergey Snezhkin and directed by Fedor Bondarchuk, STALINGRAD is set in 1942, when invading German troops were in control of the Volga River. A group of Soviet soldiers finds a young woman trapped behind enemy lines and works to protect her. Thomas Kretschmann and Yanina Studilina star.

STALINGRAD 3D Gets North American IMAX Release!

Yes! Definitely excited to see this epic in IMAX 3D!! Columbia Pictures has announced that it will release Fedor Bondarchuk's STALINGRAD in IMAX for North American audiences after wowing audiences in Russia, China, Ukraine and Poland.

IMAX will be hosting the movie for a one week engagement starting February 28 which will nicely segue into the 86th Annual Academy Awards which will be airing March 2. STALINGRAD is Russia's official selection for Best Foreign Language Film.

At last count, the movie has taken in over $67 million thanks in part to the remarkable 3D screenings. Sony's head of worldwide distribution, Rory Bruer says the movie is an ideal fit for IMAX.

STALINGRAD was shot in native 3D using 3ality Technica's gold standard 3D rigs with Steve Schklair as 3D Producer. I saw clips of the movie at 3ality's headquarters in Burbank, CA and my jaw was on the floor. Can't say enough about what I think this movie delivers - the anticipation is palpable for this - trust me!

Spivet Gets Domestic Distribution Deal & International Poster

Tim here, and over the weekend Harvey Weinstein did a great service to the US by picking up distribution rights for THE YOUNG AND PRODIGIOUS SPIVET (French title: L'Extravagant Voyage du Jeune et Prodigieux T.S. Spivet) according to Deadline. As well a new international poster has emerged for the movie. It's geared towards French audiences, despite the movie being in the English language.
Although there hasn't been an announced domestic release date yet, it will hit French IMAX screens October 10^th. With Weinstein obtaining the domestic distribution we can expect a domestic poster and release date soon.
For those of you who are curious about the note on the poster written in French. It reads:

Michael Bay Shooting TRANSFORMERS 4 With New Small Form Factor 3D IMAX Cameras

Here's an interesting story out of Cinemacon (unfortunately I couldn't make it this year!) from a friend of mine, Steve Weintraub of Collider. He had a brief chance to talk with Michael Bay and he made the most of it - Steve can work wonders in a short period of time and he asked exactly what I would have asked him too if I could have made it down to Vegas.

Essentially Bay said that IMAX has given him very expensive, new small form factor (Bay shows us the size using his hands) 3D IMAX cameras to use on TRANSFORMERS 4. To top that off, there is so much data streaming out from these things (VERY high resolution), that Bay's finishing company would not be able to handle it all if he was to shoot the movie in this way. That's saying a lot knowing that Bay does NOT use cheap services. So, Bay will only be shooting key scenes with these cameras for TF4.

Bay also revealed that he will not be shooting in HFR (high frame rate).

9-Minute Preview Of STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Pre-Rolling In Front Of THE HOBBIT!

Tim here. That's right folks, Paramount Pictures will unveil the first look at the next Star Trek movie in IMAX 3D this December. Word is that it will play in some 500 digital IMAX 3D theaters beginning December 14^th as the opener for THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY. This is an unexpected, but pleasant, surprise.

As with the THE DARK KNIGHT RISES preview with last year's MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL, moviegoers will get a chance to be among the first in the world to glimpse a segment of the forthcoming movie, which was shot partially on IMAX film. You can bet that the sequence moviegoers will see was shot with those IMAX cameras, just like the sequence previewed from The Dark Knight Rises.

As if there wasn't enough incentive to see THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY in IMAX, now there's an added bonus. STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS brings back the cast from the last adventure including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana, and it hits theaters on May 17, 2013.

Spielberg Eyeing IMAX and 3D For ROBOPOCALYPSE!

"Good so far" news coming directly from Steven Spielberg on what options he's investigating for his next movie, ROBOPOCALYPSE.

Says Spielberg: "I'm going to do an IMAX camera test, [both] a 2 and 3D test for my next movie 'Robopocalypse,' and I haven't decided whether I'm going to use the IMAX cameras, and I haven't decided whether it's going to be 2D or 3D yet, but I am in September going to start doing some tests."

Shooting will reportedly take place in Montreal (Mel's Cité du Cinema Studios) with a very healthy budget of $200 million. The studio's owner, Michel Trudel broke the story to the CBC back in November.

In the near future, an increasingly robot-reliant society faces extinction after a computer scientist accidentally unleashes a sentient artificial intelligence named Archos. After failed attempts at making the AI less intelligent, Archos becomes self-aware and immediately takes steps to stop the Earth's destruction. Since humans have been polluting the Earth (determined to be the only source of life in the galaxy), Archos makes them his prime target. By infecting all devices that are chip controlled (cars, elevators, robots, etc.), Archos begins a systematic attack on the human race. Small bands of survivors find ways to circumvent the eradication and survive without the modern technology. This is a story of those survivors in the months and days leading up to and following Archos' date of attack, Day Zero.

Personally, I think ROBOPOCALYPSE is begging to be in 3D and of course IMAX 3D too. C'mon Steve!

STAR TREK 2 To Boldly Go IMAX 3D...

Some great news today from IMAX and Paramount stating that my favorite (and possibly yours) sci-fi franchise of all time is going IMAX 3D. We've known for awhile now that STAR TREK 2 will be a 3D conversion, but it's nice to have it all tied up in an official fashion.

Here are the storylines for the two movies:

MEN IN BLACK III:
In Men in Black 3, Agents J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) are back… in time. J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner. But when K’s life and the fate of the planet are put at stake, Agent J will have to travel back in time to put things right.
