I just saw 26 minutes of footage from CARS 2 and 19 minutes from PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES in extremely well projected 3D by MasterImage. The movies look outstanding.
I can't divulge too much info but CARS 2 looks to be a better outing than the first in my mind. Lots of action and well, anything with Michael Caine is awesome anyway!
POTC looks like a ton-o-fun too. I saw a very ingenious escape scene that I can't describe to you right now, but it is worth the price of admission in itself!
Oh and I saw much more of Blackbeard and he is going to be the perfect villain in the movie! LOVED his scenes.

I also saw a sizzler reel for THE AVENGERS! Let me tell you the whole audience was open mouthed in watching it. Several stars were interviewed for the clip like Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johannson along with director Joss Whedon who you could tell is so excited to be working on the picture. This thing is going to be MAMMOTH!

I have to say Johnny Depp's carriage jumping scene looks amazing! Not to mention the size of the sets. The behind the scenes shots in this clip are from the London location; they are also shooting in Hawaii and Los Angeles.
This iteration of the PIRATES franchise is supposedly meant to stand on its own however we have just heard a rumor that the fifth and sixth installments will be probably shot back to back - though this is not confirmed.

LOL. I love how he captures an audience! Johnny Depp is truly one of the great actors of his generation. Depp's acting range is unmatched and Captain Jack Sparrow will go down as probably his greatest character.
Disney is right to place him front and center with PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES because much of the previous star power is now gone: Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley will not be returning. Geoffrey Rush is still there though thank the movie gods.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer needs a massive hit too. Lately his stock has fallen somewhat, but still $326 million worldwide is not too shabby for PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME - it is just not Bruckheimer numbers that's all. THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE is languishing too; just $68 million worldwide to date. That one hurts - though I enjoyed it somewhat.

There are not many surer bets than a PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN sequel is there?
We have already heard that there is a strong chance that Michael Bay is shooting TRANSFORMERS 3 in native 3D via Ridley Scott. Now we have exclusive information from a person very much in the know that it is in fact happening.
...As I said in the last post, I have recently spoken with Vince Pace who is of course very well known in 3D circles.
Here is what Vince had to say about his current projects: "Trying to lay low and do what I do best. We took delivery of the first Alexa cameras for Hugo and have 23 more on the way. Transformers has also signed on to shoot 3D throughout the film. I am working on a big Disney film but can’t mention the name and are lining up five more films. Just wrapped on additional photography for Resident Evil and Tron. Currently in Hawaii and flying out to London for Hugo."
Perfect! I can't wait to see the 3D visuals from TRANSFORMERS 3. And the unnamed Disney movie shooting in Hawaii? I would place my bets on PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES wouldn't you?
Jim here. I finally got to see Jerry Bruckheimer's G-FORCE last night and I have to say the 3D was done very well. I have been invited to see 3D live action test reels from various companies like In-Three and PassmoreLab but have not been able to check them out yet, so my first initiation to converted live action 3D movies was G-FORCE from Disney.
Here is the bottom line: 3D conversion IS a valid approach to creating a stereoscopic movie. Valid in that if done correctly it looks great. From a consumer's view, there is little to be concerned about as the end result is fairly equivalent to what can be accomplished with 3D cameras.
And consumers are loving it. G-FORCE is number one at the box office this weekend with $31.7 million of which 56% was derived from 3D screens (which accounted for only 43% of the total sites). 75% were parents and children.
I will say that on a professional level, my opinion is using 3D cameras is still the way to go as it gives the director and DP much more flexibility in creating the look you want, especially depth - but when it comes to the consumer, most will be completely satisfied with the result.
In-Three of Westlake Village, CA is responsible for this movie's 3D conversion (they call it dimensionalization). I scrutinized G-FORCE quite closely for anything I found distressing and there was nothing. Some scenes were flatter than others - confirmed by removing my RealD glasses and seeing little distortion. I find conversion works very well for layering of one element on another - like the heads up displays used by the animals in the film. It is magical how the conversion process reaches into 2D frames and stretches out a 3D environment - very cool. At times I would have liked to see more extreme depth, but perhaps that is not possible at this time with 2D->3D.
Stereoscopic dimming was not bad either. As you may know when you don those polarized 3D glasses, the light from the screen is essentially divided in half - 50% for each eye - so dimming takes place. To see this, simply remove your glasses during the show and see just how much brighter the screen is when you can see it all at the same time with both eyes. In the case of G-FORCE, there were no moments of extreme darkness and therefore indiscernable action. Far from it. So well done!
The storyline is simple and aimed at your basic children's interests: cute pets, food, love and relationships. The action is tame, yet full of special effects - which brings me to my final point...
Michael Bay - you are full of it, and/or ignorant of 3D. I asked Bay whether or not TRANSFORMERS 3 will be in 3D during ShoWest this year and he said that the way they shoot is too "aggressive" for it. Sorry. Wrong. Even if you chicken out of shooting TRANSFORMERS 3 in native 3D, you can clearly utilize a conversion company to get the job done. One scene in the finale of G-FORCE has what is essentially a transformed robot made up of smaller components (appliances to be precise) and it is a very complex piece of CG.IT LOOKED STUNNING. Your point is not well taken Mr. Bay - research it. See some demo reels - it can be done is a spectacular way - and it should be done. It really brings audiences into the shot and makes the robots even more intimidating. So, do yourself a favor and make your next giant robot movie in 3D.
In the past I have expressed my reservations about first run movies being converted in post from 2D to 3D because I think native 3D is the better path - more depth and control. I still think that is the case only in that it gives the seasoned 3D director an edge in making a superior product. However for the less experienced directors with more of a post production budget, 2D to 3D conversion makes sense and is a viable alternative. G-FORCE is an excellent example. The 3D was done well!
It is still beyond my grasp as to why someone like Tim Burton decided to go with conversion as he is far from being inexperienced - but I am prepared to write a glowing review of ALICE IN WONDERLAND should it warrant it. Because conversion works. Conversion works and quite frankly I am relieved that it does - this really should solidify stereoscopic 3D as not only the future of cinema, but its past as well. James Cameron and Peter Jackson have both just expressed a deep interest in converting their epics TITANIC and LORD OF THE RINGS to 3D - so should others. There are classic movies begging to be rejuvenated with 3D and even take another run at theaters - THE MATRIX for example.
So go see G-FORCE with your family - the kids will love it. And the 3D is very well done! :-) Thanks to Empire Theatres for the screening. Stats courtesy of Box Office Mojo.
Jim here. Disney is stepping up to the plate for its new 3D, family, comedy adventure G-FORCE. Working with Major League Baseball, they have come up with a scheme where if someone hits a grand slam during the July 14 All Star Game, then BLAM! 1 million people get to see G-FORCE for free.
Thats right. All you have to do is be one of the first 1 million to sign up at Disney.com between April 22 and July 14, and if that huge dinger is hit, you are off to enjoy some stereoscopic guinea pigs kick some butt. The last home run at an All Star Game was in 1983. Oh and if you are in attendance at the All Star Game in St. Louis and the aforementioned tater is struck, you get in free too.
I guess these guinea pigs would have to be on steriods wouldn't they?I don't see the tie in with MLB though. What a second... no. I mean, they talk and stuff. :-) Looks like a blast. I will be checking it out for sure. And that Bruckheimer guy has quite a track record, no?
Jim here - we are getting our first look at Disney's G-FORCE by way of a trailer! And it does look very appealing.
I was recently talking with Rob Engle who is responsible for composition and final delivery of the Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney made G-FORCE. Rob said "It is a live action visual effects project (digital effects being added to plate photography). The plates were shot in 2-D using traditional techniques. The plates are being "converted" to 3-D while the digital effects are being rerendered for the other eye."
So G-FORCE is part 2D to 3D conversion and part CG. Very interesting technical project to say the least.
The storyline is of course going to appeal to kids and families and looks like a traditional and entertaining Disney movie. I have to admit I chucked a few times throughout this trailer and can tell that I will enjoy this one!
The best 3D movie list of rumored, planned, in production and in theaters has been updated yet again - nothing new here, I do it probably 4 or 5 times a week. However there are a couple of important dates being added:
1. Disney's "G-Force" (Jerry Bruckheimer) has been set for July 24th, 2009 - Its a 3D movie with mixed Live Action and Animation and voices by Penelope Cruz, Nicolas Cage, Steve Buscemi, Bill Nighy and Tracy Morgan. The story revolves around an elite guinea pig commando force try to stop a billionaire from taking over the world. :-)
2. Disney's "Alice in Wonderland" (Tim Burton) has been set for a March 19th, 2010 release date. I believe you are familiar with the plot for this one...
CPT Holdings, Inc. (a Sony Pictures Television service mark) has contracted with Stereo Vision Entertainment (SVE) for the script of "Booty 3D".
Doug Schwartz, CEO of SVE (and creator of Baywatch) said: "Booty 3D is a frolicking family fun film about eight women who get kidnapped by a crew of cutthroat pirates. Upon arriving at the pirates’ island hideout, they turn the tables when they snatch the pirates’ ship filled with all their booty. A chase across the high seas ensues that rivals ‘Thelma and Louise’ as the desperate band of pirates attempts, by hook or by crook, to track down their treasure laden galleon, and the crafty wenches that tricked them out of it. This is a movie about female empowerment, a true David and Goliath tale with a twist. Booty 3D is to be filmed on the South Seas paradise island of Fiji, in state-of-the-art digital 3D. It will be filled with blue skies, spectacular South Pacific scenery, beautiful women, and despicable pirates. Booty 3D is the kind of film that will be fun for the whole family."
Jim Byrkit, the Conceptual and Creative Consultant on all three "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies for Jerry Bruckheimer and Gore Verbinski, is co-creator of "Booty 3D" along with Schwartz.
Sounds like the right people are attached to this movie creatively, so we may see a really nice production here! I will keep you up to date with further developments. Movie has been added to my growing 3D movie list foundhere.
