THE FINAL DESTINATION: DVD And Blu-ray Release

Jim here. THE FINAL DESTINATION will be released on DVD / Blu-ray on January 5, 2010. Suggested retail has the discs at $28.98 and $35.99.

Both of them will feature 2D and 3D versions of the film and will come with 2 pairs of 3D glasses (these things have always been anaglyph so don't get your hopes up).

Of course we will be seeing new standards for 3D Home Videos soon
- just not in time for these discs unfortunately. I am sure it will be re-released with the new spec soon after (perhaps as THE FINAL, FINAL DESTINATION).

Special Features:
- Additional scenes
- Alternate endings (Blu-ray only)
- Body Count: The Deaths of The Final Destination featurette (Blu-ray only)
- Pre-Visualization/Storyboard Segments (Blu-ray only)
- BD-Live features (Blu-ray only)

In the meantime you can enjoy the first three FINAL DESTINATION movies from Amazon :-)

THE FINAL DESTINATION Is 3D For The Second Straight Week!

Jim here. The competition wasn't too too strong, but a very VERY nice return for THE FINAL DESTINATION once again! According to Box Office Mojo, flick will do $12.4 million in its second stanza - good enough to repeat as the top box office draw. Do you think 3D had anything to do with it? Of course!

I saw GAMER last night and I was quite disappointed. Some parts were laugh out loud bad. Sure there were great moments, but overall absolutely no competition of THE FINAL DESTINATION.

The 3D is well done and there are gimmicks of course - it is a horror movie after all - with objects poking back at you. It is one of the few genres to be able to get away with it. Makes you jump - all the better right? And audiences certainly agree. Its worth a look if you haven't checked it out yet.

Thank you Empire Theaters for the screening of THE FINAL DESTINATION.

THE FINAL DESTINATION Opens Today!!

Jim here. Can't wait to take this one in. The reviews have been great so far and since I couldn't make it to Comic-Con this year I missed the advanced look. But thanks to Empire Theaters I will be seeing it this weekend. Will have more on my thoughts on the movie soon!

In the meanwhile, check out this animated GIF showing off the lenticular poster for the movie. Cool or what? :-)

Would You See A 4D Movie? How About THE FINAL DESTINATION?

Jim here. I have intentionally stayed away from posting about several new technologies that are coming on stream for audiences that are all connected to adding more sensory input to our brain during a viewing experience. I am talking about what some people call 4D, or even 5D, 6D or more.

Gimmick right? Not so fast. Well for the most part we were talking about rides in amusement and theme parks - 3D intentionally jacked up on steroids through the use of water mist, smells and motion to name a few. I give these theme parks a wide berth because they really seem to be the primordial ooze that creates superior technologies once they percolate for awhile there. It separates what can work and what can't in many cases. Don't get me wrong - I LOVE these rides. But they are 5-15 minute rides and not entire 2 hour movies.

I am now seeing some very interesting movement on the horizon for motion: Viewers treated to having their seat move with the action taking place on screen. Whether or not adoption of motion is the next step in the evolution of the audiences experience is anyone's guess. But I will say that it is interesting. Any given movie can be integrated with the chair motion technology by pairing the action on screen with all the possible movements of the seat. These translations have already been done for many, many movies. While the technology is new, the idea has been around quite awhile.

Of note is a company out of Longueuil, Quebec (Just outside of Montreal) called D-BOX. These guys build moving theatrical chairs, gaming chairs, home theater chairs and the software to articulate them all (D-BOX Motion Code). Why bring this up now? Many would argue that 3D is still not widely adopted yet (but is clearly on its way) and focus should remain on the target - the option of showing a 3D movie on every screen. I agree with that statement of course. But we also watch future developments and this looks to have some traction - not 3D traction mind you, but certainly of note.

Here is why. Hollywood is starting to adopt them. There are Blu-ray releases that have the D-BOX motion code embedded right in with the movie already (complete with D-BOX logo on the back of the case). Further, there are almost 6000 movies that are already D-BOX ready. And at the box office, several first run movies in theaters are now being shown with the technology. In fact, Ultra Star Cinemas in Phoenix, AZ and Apple Valley, CA; Galaxy Theatres in Austin, TX and Las Vegas, NV; Mann Theatres in Los Angeles, CA; Cineplex Odeon Queensway, Toronto, ON; and the Theatres at Mall Of America, Bloomington, MN all have adopted D-BOX technology for selected screens.

Now here is where it gets exciting to me. For the first time in public theaters, a 3D movie will be screened with D-BOX, New Line's THE FINAL DESTINATION on August 28.

"We are truly excited to offer moviegoers the ultimate cinema experience by combining for the first time ever 3-D and D-BOX Motion technology," said Claude Mc Master, President and Chief Executive Officer of D-BOX Technologies. "Our technology is such a great complement to 3-D to provide an incomparable immersive movie-going experience".

So what do I think of the technology? I haven't seen it yet, but I plan on doing so very soon. I remember as a child seeing a movie at Disney World with seats that inflated and deflated with the action - and I was entralled. However, as an adult the jury is still out on whether I will enjoy it or not. You will be the first to know.

I must say their D-BOX gaming equipment LOOKS remarkable. It connects through USB to your computer and uses 3 motion actuators and a racecar like seat to bring you into the action. I think if you combined this with nVidia's 3D Vision (more on this cool tech very soon) and perhaps even TRACK IR, the immersive factor would be mind blowing. Seriously mind blowing.

One thing is certain though: Change. The evolution of Hollywood will continue long past 3D and you can count on MarketSaw to be on the leading edge with you. We will NEVER sit on our hands while a cinematic revolution is taking place (like some sites I know now with 3D!) and will always be showing you exciting developments. Like D-BOX. Michael here.  This looks like so much fun.  And I love how at the end it says "2-D in select theaters."  Seems like the tides have turned!

New THE FINAL DESTINATION Poster On The Interwebs

Jim here. There is a new THE FINAL DESTINATION (formally FINAL DESTINATION: DEATH TRIP) poster on the net (UGO). I like the tagline a fair bit: "Rest in pieces" and the imagery itself is definitely eye catching, but still I think something is missing from it.

The feeling I get from this poster is definitely a gimmicky 3D feel and seeing as though this is a 3D horror movie we can expect some of this taking place. Not too much I hope. I thought MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D did a good job of balancing it out despite the constant temptation to use it.

Very interested in seeing another live action horror in 3D - and my feeling is this could be the best one yet due to the proven franchise nature of the series. But if it isn't I will not hesitate to deep six it.

3D Shorts: FINAL DESTINATION Gets New Name; 50 YEARS Gets Distribution; HUMPTY DUMPTY Gets New Poster

Hey Jim here. Got some quick 3D news for you...

- FINAL DESTINATION: DEATH TRIP 3D is no longer. It has been renamed to THE FINAL DESTINATION - nothing too drastic, but better if you ask me. Almost sounds like a reboot attempt from scratch rather than as part of a franchise. (Source: Box Office Mojo)

Ok. Name change. Not sure about the timing, but I didn't really like the first one anyway...

- AROUND TH
E WORLD IN 50 YEARS has picked up distribution while at the Cannes Film Festival through Universal Music Group. Apparently the deal was consumated after a presentation of the movie which also included about 15 minutes of 3D. Moreover, it is not just for North American theatrical distribution but also DVD, TV, Non-theatrical and global soundtrack rights. (Source: Animation Magazine)

Love it when a plan comes together. Looks like UMG fell in love the project - can't wait to see it.

- Sony and Regal Cinemas have shaken hands on a 4K digital projector rollout to ~5,000 screens over the next 3 to 5 years. Of special note is that they have a grand total of ~6,700 screens right now, so digital will be making up about 75% of all their screens. This comes right on the heels of another massive 4K projector deal with AMC (4,700 screens) - making Sony 4K the industry leader right out of no where. That is if you can ever say that about Sony. 4K is the real deal guys. Congrats on the deals. And bring on 3D! :-)

Well if you had any doubt about Sony's entry in digital and 3D, you can drop them now. That is a rather resounding industry endorsement don't you think? I have seen the tech first hand (albeit a smallish screen) and it does look amazing.

- HUMPTY DUMPTY has revealed his box office teeth early - a new poster has the human/alien creature pulling a Jack Nicholson from behind a hole in a door. The movie is about an alien that wreaks havoc on humans after his mother is "abused by two rednecks in the Deep South". I think it has a great deal of potential... (Source: MySpace via ShockTilYouDrop)

Kinda disturbing character don't you think? And if the Executive Producer (Mark Ordesky) has anything to do with it, the FX are gonna be WILD.
