Star Wars Films In 3D: Update From George Lucas
Jim here. For those that missed it - George Lucas gave an update on Star Wars during his interview with AP a little while back and he mentioned the following about the conversion of his six Star Wars movies into stereoscopic 3D:
"We're trying to do that," (re-releasing the six "Star Wars" films using new 3-D technology) Lucas said. "We worked on some, with a company that was developing the technology a few years ago to convert films into 3-D, we worked with them. But the system works great. It's just not very practical. So what we've been working on since then is to develop a sort of practical way to do it. And we will get there. It's just a technological challenge."
Looks like Lucasfilm will have a 2D to 3D conversion technology soon -or- they are working with a 3rd party 2D-3D company to augment the offering. I suspect he is looking for a little something extra - perhaps introducing new elements into the movies that were not there before as well as the 3D conversions.
