Tim's Review of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2"

Tim here, and let me start by saying that this movie is an average film overall. Whether you want to look at amongst superhero movies or all of filmmaking history the movie falls into the category of average. This is why I ended up deciding to give the movie a C+ score, and after reading my thoughts you can see the movie for yourself to make up your own mind.

Flat out the story and plot are the main areas where this movie fell flat and was very "BLAAHH!" In the very beginning of the movie my suspension of disbelief is thrown because I can't understand how in the past Peter's father was supposed to have uploaded a video file over an Ethernet port from a private jet to the cloud... Did the cloud exist back then? When is back then? I'd say late 1990's or early 2000's if the movie was taking place in present day, which seems reasonable to assume. So how does he not only upload the file, but get interrupted and start from the same place each time. As some of us know if we start uploading a file to a server via FTP and it gets interrupted you have to start over again. Only sometimes if you're lucky it will continuing from where it got interrupted. That's one of the first things that was hard to swallow.

The movie continues at an uneven pace and often gets to a slow crawl despite the action sequences that pop up. At the center is a love story that is strong and is done well thanks to the great performances from Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, but the rest of the movie fails to take off. The plot revolving around what Peter's father did never really feels like it works, nor does his father's explanation for why Peter would have gotten his abilities while anyone else wouldn't. The movie is an exercise in waste, and as well fails to bring anything truly new to the table. The conclusion of the love story at the end of this movie is the only fitting aspect, and the only thing the audience will have an emotional reaction to. At the same time it makes it difficult to bring Peter's true love interest of the Spiderman universe Mary Jane Watson into the mix.

Another area I had trouble understanding how it could happen, and was not an area my suspension of disbelief would accept the event, was in the creation of Jamie Foxx's Electro. First, Foxx's Max/Electro character is underdeveloped and then there's no clue given as to why he would survive his accident to turn into this villainous character and no one else would. Especially since electric eels are involved and the movie establishes that Oscorp has abandoned animal experimentation after the events of the last film. So why are the eels there? Also, what about the bullies and tormentors of Max from earlier in the film? Why do they disappear never to be heard or seen again? I'm sure Max would have wanted revenge on them. There's a serious failure on the storytelling here.

So next we come to the other villain of the movie: Harry Osborn, AKA The Green Goblin. His character was also underdeveloped, but was also way too sullen. Dane Dehaan did a fine job with what he had to work with, but the emotional range of the character was sullen and really angry. His relationship with Peter wasn't developed enough and additionally the decease that afflicted his father and now consumes him felt rushed. His overall purpose was to setup the next installment's plot.

And, that's the biggest pitfall of this movie: it's all setup for the bigger franchise. It doesn't stand on its own. Paul Giamatti was poorly used as an extremely one-dimensional Aleksei Sytsevich who will end up being The Rhino in the next film. His character is over-animated and over the top and terribly uses the high level of acting Giamatti is capable of delivering. It doesn't seem like he'll work in The Amazing Spiderman 3 as a compelling villain. It's all a setup for the Sinister Six, and Harry Osborne will be at the center as The Green Goblin.

Beyond the story the technical aspects of the film were on par with a big budget movie like this. The stereoscopic 3D was average however because they chose to make it a hybrid instead of a fully native 3D production. I call it hybrid because it was shot in 2D with 35mm film and all the digital VFX were rendered in stereo. This caused a lot of the live action elements shot on 35mm to feel flatter as the 3D wasn't pushed enough for there to be true depth in the shots. A lot of the CGI elements created by the VFX department worked great in stereo and they pushed it as much as they should have, but that didn't help the earlier decision that the rest would be converted to 3D. It was a step back from the last installment. Also, 3D conversion on 2D shot action scenes where it's close shaky camera and quick cutting never works well for me. I saw the movie in MasterImage 3D and Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound.

The sound design wasn't anything innovative, but was technically good. The score by Hans Zimmer felt recycled from his previous scores. The Electro theme and music style worked well and had some creativity in it, but still sounded too similar to what Hans Zimmer has done in The Dark Knight franchise and last year's Man of Steel. It's easy to expect more from this talented composer.

Marc Webb did a fine job making this movie, but in the end failed to go beyond average. It's going to be hard keeping excitement amongst fans with this by the numbers delivery. Let's hope that things are greatly improved with the next installment.

Sony Pictures Shows 30-Minutes of The Amazing Spiderman 2 at CinemaCon

Tim here, and in my continuing coverage of CinemaCon we got a special treat during the Sony Pictures presentation: 30-minutes of The Amazing Spiderman 2! We got to watch the beginning of the film, a little action sequence a bit later in the film, and a lead in to the climatic end. All followed by a sizzle of all the footage previously seen in trailers.

Before describing the footage, the biggest news Sony revealed is that their decision to have 3 villains in this movie had to do primarily with setting up the Sinister Six, which they plan on bringing into the franchise, and as well spin-off films. They mentioned Venom.

We opened with the beginning of the film, which gives another perspective to the beginning of the last film and explains what happened to Peter's parents. We move forward to the present, a year after the events of the last film, and Spiderman (Andrew Garfield) is in his prime. He has tried to keep his promise to Gwen's father by keeping away, and it seems his crime fighting nearly keeps him away from his high school graduation as Gwen (Emma Stone) calls him from the ceremony to figure out where he is. It sets up an early relationship with Max Dillon (Jamie Foxx) that is then returned to in the next sequence we got to see. We also meet Aleksei Sytsevich (Paul Giamatti) who is in the midst of a heist that Spiderman works to foil.

Max is now Electro, and is discovering just what his powers are capable of in the middle of Times Square. Peter is with Gwen reconnecting as "friends" when his Spidy senses tell him something is amiss nearby. We witness the first battle between Spiderman and Electro, which works great in 3D. The next short sequence is when Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) attempts to get the upper hand on the Spider by teaming up with Electro.

The footage was screened in S3D, which was a nice change since most of the previous footage shown by studios has been in 2D. Although, I can tell it's a conversion for the pure live action elements, the rest works in the same Hybrid manner that Gravity did. Since Spiderman and Electro are so often CGI created in the computer the stereo works great. As much as I wish they had shot it natively, it still will work fine in the 3D format.

Pretty exciting stuff coming from Sony this year! The Amazing Spiderman 2 hits theaters in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on May 2, 2014.

Must Watch: New Trailer For Dreamworks Animation's THE CROODS

I've been waiting for this one! This first trailer for Dreamworks Animation's THE CROODS opens the door to what I think could be the dawning of a new era for DWA. I've known all along about the plot that an caveman outsider with "new technology" enters into the Crood's family unit and disturbs the so called peace (a comedic idea developed by John Cleese?), but with this trailer we're seeing an entirely new dynamic open up about the family's daughter who is so anxious to explore. What I'm seeing here is some storytelling magic from DWA, expanding on an already great idea with some new arcs about living life to the fullest with the energy and bravado of youth.

Will it pay off for the Croods? How does Ryan Reynold's outsider character play out? Questions to be answered soon. In the meantime, enjoy the first trailer! Joining Reynolds is Nicholas Cage and Emma Stone along with Cloris Leachman, Clark Duke and Catherine Keener.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
The Croods is being written and directed by two-time Academy Award nominee Chris Sanders (HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, LILO AND STITCH) and Kirk DeMicco (SPACE CHIMPS) and produced by Kristine Belson (HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON) and Jane Hartwell (SHREK). It stars Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Catherine Keener, Clark Duke and Cloris Leachman. The Croods is a comedy adventure that takes us back to a previously undiscovered era in the history of our planet known as the Croodaceous, when nature was still a work-in-progress… full of never-before- seen creatures and landscapes. Audiences will relate to the hilarious family antics as an imaginative and resourceful newcomer helps the Croods navigate their way through the fantastic world beyond their cave.

THE CROODS opens on March 22, 2013. For all of our Croods coverage, click here.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Secures Garfield And Webb; Stone In Talks!

Wonderful news! The best Spider-man / Peter Parker actor (in my opinion) has been re-inked to headline THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 for Columbia. Andrew Garfield, who at the same moment can be bashful and timid but yet ooze new found power has been secured. Hey - that DOES sounds like Peter Parker.

Further and perhaps just as important, Marc Webb ((500) DAYS OF SUMMER) has also been tapped to return as director. It looks like he'll direct the sequel before having to go back to Fox Searchlight to finish his commitment with them. Time will tell. I thought that despite the normal studio filter than is placed on creativity, Webb's webhead tale was nicely done. But would I rather see a full blown, unfiltered Webb take for Spidey 2? You bet.

Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Jeff Pinker have penned the script so we should expect a solid story yet again, despite different writers. I loved the first movie.

Here's Doug Belgrad, Columbia's president on the re-signing:

"We could not be more confident in the direction we are taking this new Spider-Man storyline and we are tremendously excited to be ramping up production again with Marc at the helm and Andrew continuing on as Peter Parker. We can’t wait to share what we have in store for Peter and Spider-Man with audiences worldwide."

Emma Stone is still in talks to pick up her magnificent turn as Gwen Stacy. I suppose if things turn sour for whatever reason Mary Jane Watson could emerge for the first time, but for heaven's sake sign Stone. She's good for this franchise.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is slated for a May 2, 2014 release with lensing to commence in Q1, 2013. And after the first one made $751 million, the stakes are high.

Movie Review: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, 8 Stars And Amazing 3D!

First of all this review will not have any spoilers, so relax you can read the whole thing and not be precisely tipped off about anything. I do talk loosely about one scene that bothered me but no details are given. However the comments are free reign and anything goes as far as spoilers!

I saw director Marc Webb's THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN last night in IMAX 3D (yes, I scored a poster) and let me tell you it is well worth the price of admission.

Allow me to admit that I am very biased toward Spider-man. He was MY superhero growing up so if this movie is halfway decent, I'm going to love it. I was smiling broadly many, many times through this movie which is something I normally don't do.

There is only one scene in the movie that was far from being perfect. Towards the end there is a need for our webslinger to get across town and he needs assistance. The assistance that's rendered totally does not belong in the movie and I was actually thinking about one the best moments from Sam Raimi's Spidey universe and hoping that Webb wouldn't feel the need to replicate it somehow.

You know what though? That scene smells like studio interference, not the director. This is complete conjecture on my part, but I can't see Webb buying into it. I think Sony over-analyzed what was good with the original franchise and tried to do it again (pun intended). We'll discuss in the comments. The intentions were good.

My movie rating was quite severely cut simply because of this scene! It weakened my suspension of disbelief. It messed up the story for me. It blew my total enjoyment frankly. Everything that had nicely been built previous to this was dampened. But not devastated.

Enough on the subject for now.

What else? Aunt May's hair should have been grey or greying and not perfectly dyed, but Sally Field otherwise was perfect. Martin Sheen was a bit too close to Peter, but I liked the message he gave him.

What did I like? More like what did I love! The 3D was jaw dropping at times, especially in the end sequence. You can tell the native 3D truly captured detailed scenes like the panning aerial shots of New York and it's bridges. I love the feeling that the 3D was caught effortlessly - a natural, green feeling if you will. You can thank 3ality Technica and Red for that. John Schwartzman again lived up to his name as one of the world's premier cinematographers. There were only two moments where anything broke the screen and came at you and those were suitably ejected using visual effects.

The fight scenes were breathtaking, really. Such inventive choreography! When Parker turns into Spider-man you can feel his worry and excitement at the same time. Wonderful directing achievement.

James Horner slammed another movie score home run. Loved his work on this.

The visual effects? Wow. Remember SUPERMAN's tagline "You will believe a man can fly"? Ok, maybe you don't, but it applies here... "You will believe a man can swing. And shoots web from his wrists. And duck bullets. You get the idea..." Beautiful job guys! And a happy marriage between practical and visual effects too. Check out this great article (fx guide) on the various effects for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.

Make up your own mind about Andrew Garfield. Don't read other reviews. Don't listen to anybody else. For me though, HE WAS PERFECT. This guy was born to be Peter Parker. Other than being slightly tall for the role, he makes up for in every other way. His looks, posture, physique, voice, mannerisms and his inept social skills was portrayed PERFECTLY. Let me say that again. PERFECTLY. I should know, Peter Parker / Spider-man was everything for me growing up. If you are a fan of the character, go see this movie.

Emma Stone nailed Gwen Stacy too, but at times she is almost didn't seem to fit the science geek persona. Rhys Ifans did remarkably well with Curt Connors / The Lizard given that everything I had seen him in previously was no where near this role.

I could care less about the timing of this reboot. I could literally watch a Spider-man movie every six months and not tire of it. Try telling it's too soon for a spidey movie to any true fan.

In conclusion, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN could have easily been 9 stars, as the cinematography, acting, 3D, score and visual / special effects were outstanding. A few more edits, a reshoot perhaps and a tad more Peter Parker struggling with this thoughts ALONE would have sealed it. But Marc Webb did an admirable job. Well worth your time and money! It's not THE AVENGERS by any stretch, but heck - this is our friendly neighborhood Spider-man.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN has done $7.5m from domestic midnight shows last night which is on par with what SPIDER-MAN 3 made. IMAX pushed the way with a $4000 screen average.

Was the 3D as good as PROMETHEUS? Yes in my books. On par. Get out and see it!! 8 stars.

Special thanks to Empire Theatres for the screening!

You're Going To Flip Over The Three New TV Spots For THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

Well - you should enjoy them IF you make the decision to watch them! There ARE new scenes in these so once again, you have been warned that SPOILERS are present. That said, I don't think they are massive spoilers but rather visual and shot shot spoilers. Still, it's distracting to be watching a movie in the theater and then be constantly reminded that I've seen this before... in the commercial. Your call.

Here's the storyline for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN:
One of the world’s most popular characters is back on the big screen as a new chapter in the Spider-Man legacy is revealed in The Amazing Spider-Man. Focusing on an untold story that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story, the new film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, with Martin Sheen and Sally Field. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt, based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are producing the film in association with Marvel Entertainment for Columbia Pictures, which will open in theaters everywhere in 3D on July 3, 2012.

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN opens on July 3.

I have to give the spoiler warning here again especially with the first clip featuring Gwen Stacy because this is clearly something that many won't want to see because it will ruin a pristine viewing experience of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. But I must say, the visuals are OUTSTANDING - shot natively on 3ality Technica rigs.

Must Watch: New Overseas Trailer For THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: New Scenes!

Hey guys, if you have already seen the trailers that exist already, seeing this one won't spoil too much more for you. A bit more humor and a bit more Connors. Personally, I recommend watching it if only to see a tiny bit more of the humor that should be present in any Spider-man film.

Must See: New Images From THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

Oh yes - love the shot of Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy swinging down to the street! What a shot. Too bad the EW watermark has to be everywhere on these things though.

Can't wait to see these visuals - the color usage alone has my interest piqued. Add on 3D and well, we'll be in the comics themselves :-)

New Posters And International Trailer For THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN!

By the looks of things THE AVENGERS is the super hero movie to beat this summer, but another Marvel property - THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN - will have something to say about that, as well as another well known protagonist, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES which will of course suffer because it's in 2D (haha! I had to!).

And to ramp things up a bit further here are two new posters for the webslinger as well as the international trailer for the much anticipated reboot.

Here's the storyline for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN:
Like most teenagers his age, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. In his journey to put the pieces of his past together he uncovers a secret his father held…a secret that will ultimately shape his destiny as Spider-Man. This is the first in a series of movies that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story. On July 3rd, 2012, the untold story begins.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN opens July 3.

MUST SEE: New Teaser Poster For THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN!

Check out this artistic poster from our friendly neighborhood Spider-man!
Love the blending of shadows in this thing.

"THE UNTOLD STORY" - So obviously a departure from Sam Raimi's web-head universe... but just how far departed is it? We know Gwen Stacy plays a much larger role for Marc Webb: Does she die in the movie like in the comics or does she stick around? Well for one thing it was the Green Goblin who caused her death in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #121 but clearly the GG isn't in this film. Will The Lizard kill her in cold blood? (Hah, I like that pun!)

Personally I think Stone has signed on for 2 or 3 films so she's safe. Here is what she said on Jay Leno: "There's a few 'Spider-Men' [movies], so I may have to keep [my blonde hair] for a couple of years." Hmmm... we'll see about that.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN opens July 3!

What about you? What changes do you think Webb has in store for us? Good or bad? How do you feel about mechanical webslingers?

So far so good for me though. Very cool teaser poster!

New AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Photo And Marvel's Next Step At The Movies...

We have a new photo for you from THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN of Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker eyeing Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy at their high school.

I'm really looking forward to seeing these dynamic characters together as opposed to the Peter Parker / Mary Jane Watson that has been so prominent with the first three Tobey Maguire movies. You know what? I never really like Dunst in the Watson role at all. So yeah, this should be a step up.

Another thing of interest to me is seeing how Garfield pulls off shrinking in age from 27 to 17! That's quite a feat to do and make it believable.

The Amazing Spider-Man will be released in 3D on July 3, 2012. The film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are producing the Marvel Entertainment production for Columbia Pictures. The executive producers are Stan Lee, Kevin Feige, and Michael Grillo.

And more news from Marvel! They intend to continue development of lesser known comic book properties like ANT-MAN (Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish just finished their script) and DOCTOR STRANGE (script just handed in and they are looking for a director), presumeably with lesser budgets.

From Twitch: Created in 1963 Doctor Strange is the story of an arrogant surgeon who is injured in a car accident and goes on to become the Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel universe. Using his magical powers Strange protects the earth from attacks from other realms.

So is a 2013 release of DOCTOR STRANGE unreasonable to hope for? I think not! Remember Marvel has made a fairly hefty commitment to release movies each and every year. Some years will be better than others like next year obviously with THE AVENGERS manhandling the box office. But 2013 is no slouch already with IRON MAN 3 and THOR 2 slated.

Sally Field And Martin Sheen Could Be Aunt And Uncle In Marc Webb's SPIDER-MAN!

Interesting! You know what? I am on board with these rumors (via THR) if they turn out to be factual. Sally Field is reportedly in early talks to play Aunt May in Marc Webb's upcoming stereoscopic 3D reboot of the SPIDER-MAN franchise. Further, Martin Sheen is close to inking a deal where he plays Uncle Ben.

Obviously we need a strong acting presence from both of these characters, especially Aunt May. Uncle Ben's demise (sorry if you have never watched anything SPIDER-MAN before!) has to be MEMORABLE and MOTIVATING.

As we know already, Emma Stone has jumped into the Gwen Stacy role, Andrew Garfield has landed the deal of a lifetime as Peter Parker and Rhys Ifans will more than likely suit up as Curt Connors / the Lizard which we knew a year ago, though back then it seemed like Dylan Baker was teed up for the role.

So far so good with Marc Webb's efforts. Hopefully these casting rumors turn out to be accurate and that the talent signs on. More when I get it! And no comment on whether MJ will be in the movie or not...

SPIDER-MAN Reboot Has Its Villain: Rhys Ifans As... ???

Sony has let the cat out of the bag - well at least partially. Studio has announced that Rhys Ifans (NOTTING HILL) will be playing the villain in the upcoming 3D reboot of Marvel's SPIDER-MAN.

Ifans lines up beside Andrew Garfield (Peter Parker) and Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy) for casting thus far.

Obviously this announcement will trigger a huge jump in Internet banter on just who Ifans will play. My wager? Dr. Curt Connors - the LIZARD. Why? I think Ifans somewhat fits the mold and more importantly, the studio needs to go with a different villain this time around - no Green Goblin, no Sandman, no Doc Ock.

SPIDER-MAN will hit theaters July 3, 2012. Who do you think Ifans will play?
