Disney isn't at a loss for acting talent in this live-action retelling of the animated Disney classic PETE'S DRAGON. Robert Redford, Bryce Dallas Howard, Karl Urban and young Oakes Fegley star in what seems to be a gorgeous live-action version of the family favorite film.
Disney continues to bring over classic animations to live-action and while I was skeptical at first, I enjoyed CINDERELLA and this looks great.
Here's the storyline: A reimagining of Disney’s cherished family film, PETE'S DRAGON is the adventure of an orphaned boy named Pete and his best friend Elliott, who just so happens to be a dragon. PETE'S DRAGON stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban, Oona Laurence and Oscar® winner Robert Redford. The film, which is directed by David Lower, is written by Lowery & Toby Halbrooks based on a story by Seton I. Miller and S.S. Field and produced by Jim Whitaker, p.g.a., with Barrie M. Osborne serving as executive producer. For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon. Disney’s PETE'S DRAGON opens in U.S. theaters on August 12, 2016. Here's the trailer:
Karl Urban fan? Of course you are. Urban will be joining Willow Shields (THE HUNGER GAMES) and Leehom Wang in an interesting new family adventure movie, THE WONDER 3-D. Ron Underwood (CITY SLICKERS, MIGHTY JOE YOUNG) is directing along with producers Steve Sachs, Robert Sidaway, Iain Brown and Chun-Yi Yuehare. THE WONDER 3-D will be made available during AFM.
Shooting is set to commence in New Zealand and China in March, 2013 and Pixomondo (HUGO) will be doing the effects.
From Variety: The film follows a 14-year-old (Shields) who, along with two of her classmates, finds the end of a rainbow. As they step inside the rainbow, it takes them away to China where local authorities and a mysterious organization are soon after them. Urban will portray a consul who delivers unexpected help.
PERFECT! I wanted to see this part of the movie so badly I was afraid I shouldn't spoil it beforehand, but the clip is quite short so I personally don't feel as though I have betrayed anything by doing so.
Fair warning though - this is the trademarked phrase from Judge Dredd, "I am the law" and he is using it in the movie so if you want a pristine viewing experience, stop watching these things!
Continuing on, I am over the top with this movie - everything looks amazing and paying tribute to the original intent of the comic (that I can see thus far anyway). Can't wait!
Here's the movie's storyline: The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One–a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge–a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.
Check out the latest from Lionsgate's DREDD starring Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey. Love where they're taking this movie and the slo-mo scenes look STUNNING.
We've got a few more quotable quotes from Urban in this one too - I won't give them away and spoil them for you! Watch it!
Here's the movie's storyline: In a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO.
Loving the artistry for this poster! I get a flashback to MAD MAX when I see it, especially his body armor. The rooftop angle also reminds me of several super hero properties out there.

We've got some more images for you from Karl Urban's upcoming DREDD. I am really liking the special effects makeup on Lena Headey - she definitely looks intense!
This could be the DREDD we've all been waiting for. Fingers crossed. So far, the word is good!

WOW. I knew I was going to like this movie, but WOW. Makes you totally forget what happened to Stallone's version of the comic-book. Karl Urban looks great in the role and DREDD 3D looks shockingly violent with a grunge feel. Love the visuals and the use of slo-mo (which is also part of the plot).
Note that this trailer is red band so it's not safe for viewing at work. There are no plot spoilers in this thing, but definite visual spoilers - you WILL get a sense for what this movie will feel like. To me, I recommend watching this thing. Again and again. :-)

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan's inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound's control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. This whole thing could be a fabrication but I think not. The PR for STAR TREK 2 is about to explode with this piece of news just before Comic-Con.
Check out what Karl Urban (Dr. McCoy) recently said when he was asked about Benedict Cumberbatch's character in the movie:
"He’s awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary."
Hello. That was clear and to the point.Gary Mitchell. If you are up on your STAR TREK TOS (The Original Series) lore, then you know that Gary Mitchell was in the second episode of the series (WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE) and played a member of starfleet along with Kirk. The two were on an away mission when Mitchell was affected by the galaxy's edge that gave him some rather strong and godlike psionic abilities, namely:
Hypercognition
Conscious regulation of autonomic reflexes
Telepathy
Extrasensory perception of various kinds, including clairvoyance, clairaudience, and clairoratory
Telekinesis
The ability to harm other organisms using directed energy
The ability to manipulate matter, including the instant materialization and dematerialization of both organisms and objects
The ability to control energy, including invulnerability to phaser weapons
Mitchell quickly becomes violent in the show and Kirk faces off with him. Can't say as I enjoyed how it ended, but it's ok overall.
The statement by Urban makes sense too as Cumberbatch has been seen with the starfleet logo on his shirt in some spy shots from the STAR TREK 2 set.
I loved the episode! Still do. I would be much more pleased with seeing this mega-villain involved with the movie than a revisit with Khan. Khan would have to be PERFECT because it's been done before and DONE WELL. Mitchell has some wiggle room.
Are you going to Comic-Con 2012? Then I have some good news for you! Masters of the Web are presenting DREDD 3D at the Reading Cinemas Gaslamp, 701 5th Avenue, San Diego on Wednesday, July 11 at 10pm. First come, first served!!
Oh and Karl Urban may show up to deal out justice. He will definitely be at the Masters of the Web Panel, Thursday, July 12 at 4:30pm in room 24ABC.
The wait is finally over! Here's the first look at a trailer for Lionsgate's DREDD starring Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby.
First of all let me say that Judge Dredd looks like he's all business and ready to represent the comic book hero authentically. Personally I would have chosen a different design for his chest armor, but hey, perhaps there is a reason it looks like a PFD.
Other than that, I love the look and feel of the trailer. Gritty, some comic book influence in the colors and it seems like there is some great action. Oh and Lena Headey's makeup / special effects looks awesome!

I'm a fan of comic so I am glad to see the movie going in the right direction. We'll see if Karl Urban can pull off being a Judge or not, but I think he'll do just fine.
John Wagner, the creator of the Judge Dredd comic book had this to say about the movie after he saw it: "I went up to London yesterday to see the completed Dredd film. I’ve had reservations about certain aspects of it, and made them plain to the team at DNA. All but one of them – a little quibble at the beginning – have been addressed. And what a lot they’ve added. Music is on the button. SFX are excellent. Filming is impressive. I’ve not seen a modern 3-D movie before but I like it. I found myself reaching out trying to touch things that were dancing before my eyes.

Karl is a great Dredd and Olivia gets Anderson completely. This is Dredd as it should be done – true to character, visceral, unrelentingly violent (but not off-puttingly so). It will open, I believe, sometime in September. No doubt you’ll let me know what you think when you’ve seen it, but this has my recommendation."
And in another interview Wagner said this: "The plot is about Dredd and his world. It’s impossible to cover every aspect of the character and his city – perhaps that was one of the failings of the first film; they tried to do too much and ended up with not a lot. Dredd homes in on the essential job of judging – instant justice in a violent future city. I like the actors, they’re well cast and they handled their parts well. Olivia Thirlby (Juno) is perfect as Anderson, the young psi judge. She gives the character a touching vulnerability. Karl Urban will not remove his helmet and will not kiss his costar."

Finally we get some more action on the DREDD production and I like what I am seeing. This movie has tons of potential as did the original starring Sylvester Stallone that I thought was barely passable. Hoping for SO much more now and it looks like we will get something very enticing.
Here are four images featuring Karl Urban as Judge Dredd. Also starring is Olivia Thirlby, Langly Kirkwood and Deobia Oparei.

Karl Urban stars as Judge Dredd in the comic book adaptation that many are hoping will right the wrongs of the 1995 attempt with Sylvester Stallone.
You won't see any photos with Dredd's helmet off either so get used to it! I think the helmet looks fine but I was hoping for a little more from the suit. Personal preference I guess. Love that everything is much more grittier the previous movie - characters and environment!

We have more DREDD shots to show you, this time showing off Karl Urban's frown, Olivia Thirlby in action and the suits of the Judges.
Is it just me or is that frown on Urban look quite forced? I don't know how I feel about that yet. I have to see his character is action first and Urban is definitely a fine action actor. We all know Dredd frowns a LOT from the comic books, but I have to say at this point I have mixed feelings about how it looks on Urban.
It would certainly be intimidating to have a guy walk up to you with the full power of the law to be judge, jury and executioner! Can Urban pull it off? In the end, I think so.
The suits look much more utilitarian and realistic than Stallone's over the top plastic looking tinsel. So kudos to Michael O'Connor (THE DUCHESS) who designed these new ones.

DREDD sentences us all on September 21, 2012! I really want this thing to work as I really enjoy the character a great deal. I have always been an Urban fan too. I want sequels. I want GOOD sequels.
Here's an official image of Karl Urban as Judge Dredd in the Lionsgate reboot of old Stallone SciFier. Though it is much clearer than previous looks at Karl as Dredd, it is extremely dark - and it must be by design. I actually like the November photo much better, though the resolution is off. If you want a closer look at the helmet itself (as Urban will NOT be taking it off for the movie), click here.
I have always loved the premise for Judge Dredd from day one, but Stallone's take on it was not up to par for me. Really hoping for something special here with Urban and his director Pete Travis (Vantage Point). The closer to the original comic, the better.

Guys - you need to watch this animated prequel to PRIEST to get an understanding of what is happening in that universe. It is very well done in fact.
Animator Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack) created the three minute piece and it is very much worth your time to watch as it allows you to see why priests were important and what their current status is for society. I won't go into more detail as it would spoil the clip for you.

Release: May 13
Here's the movie's storyline: PRIEST, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller, is set in an alternate world—one ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampires. The story revolves around a legendary Warrior Priest (Paul Bettany) from the last Vampire War who now lives in obscurity among the other downtrodden human inhabitants in walled-in dystopian cities ruled by the Church. When his niece (Lily Collins) is abducted by a murderous pack of vampires, Priest breaks his sacred vows to venture out on an obsessive quest to find her before they turn her into one of them. He is joined on his crusade by his niece's boyfriend (Cam Gigandet), a trigger-fingered young wasteland sheriff, and a former Warrior Priestess (Maggie Q) who possesses otherworldly fighting skills.
Man, this is shaping up to be a huge hit in my view! More when I get it!!

Seems that director Pete Travis' DREDD will have some footage presented at London's Kapow! Comic Con that is running April 9 and 10, 2011. The movie's producer Andrew MacDonald (28 DAYS LATER, TRAINSPOTTING) will be addressing the crowd.
Says MacDonald:“It is fantastic to be involved with Kapow! and I’m really looking forward to talking to all the fans about our upcoming Dredd movie. I’ll be on the 2000AD panel with a little taster of what people can look forward to from our 2012 release”.
This is the first year for the San Diego Comic Con inspired show in the UK. Have a look:
DREDD, the Karl Urban vehicle based on the UK comic book JUDGE DREDD is in production right now in South Africa with the same team that made DISTRICT 9. Very excited about this project - we need a definitive movie made about this character! Check out all of MarketSaw's DREDD coverage right here.
Here's our first glimpse of Karl Urban as Judge Dredd in Reliance Big Entertainment's DREDD.
The photo has emerged on the Interwebs from this tweet from a comic book artist known as Jock. I am liking the treatment that the designers have given his costume and if they hold true to their promise of Urban not taking off the helmet then I am pretty much a happy blogger to this point.
Olivia Thirlby also stars in the very hard R rated comic book adaptation.
Do you think director Pete Travis (VANTAGE POINT) will be able to hold true to the original comic? I will say that by shooting the feature with the same DISTRICT 9 folks they are off on the right foot...
