Report from NAB 2010: S3D is Everywhere!

Michael here reporting from NAB 2010 in Vegas. Saturday and Sunday featured the all-3D Digitial Cinema Summit, in which every S3D topic under the sun was presented and discussed by distinguished S3D professionals. Especially valuable to me was the real-time stereo footage (shot by 3ality Digital) which helped demystify stereo shooting. Errors were intentionally introduced, then fixed, as the audience of 600 something attendees watched with their Real-D glasses.

But that was just a tiny slice of the S3D smorgasboard that was presented. There were some fireworks too, as speakers voiced multiple conflicting opinions regarding 3D conversion. To get an idea of all that was discussed, check out the program here. The only really newsworthy item to come out of the Summit was a new, compact 3D camera from Sony. I was surprised to see it, as the Summit was about S3D education and discussion of where S3D is now, where it's headed, and where it will be in the future.

Today I watched a presentation of the making of Alice in Wonderland, as well as got to see the showfloor. S3D is absolutely everywhere. Panasonic had 6 of their $21,000 AG-3DA1 cameras available for attendees to try out by shooting a special backdrop with a live actor. I played with them for a while, and now I really wish I owned one. Sony has a gigantic S3D LED display, as well as a huge S3D broadcast truck in their booth. And just about every broadcast-related company was showing off their 3D solutions.

Off to the side of the Summit room were some demos of various 3D broadcast formats, including side-by-side, top/bottom, and 720P60 feeds of the same footage. I talked to TDVision today, and they wanted it to be known that they are throwing down the gauntlet against the half-resolution formats that were spoken about and demoed at the Summit.

Ethan Schur of TDVision spoke out against these half resolution 3D formats:

We choose service compatible 2D + Delta over frame compatible (top/bottom and side-by-side) because you don't disenfranchise the 2D users (2D version is included), you get the full HD quality, and you can watch it on any TV in the best quality possible . We shouldn't be sacrificing quality. Who wants to pay all this money for a 1080P television, a nice Blu-ray disc and all these kind of things, and then you are only watching half the pixels?

The problem is that a lot of people in their homes still have old set-top boxes from 2003 and before that, and that people are saying I don't want to make a big investment in 3D, I just want to shoehorn whatever I can into these old clunker set-top boxes. You can't keep your set-top box forever. These boxes can't even do 1080P."

I agree...I want full S3DHD. It seems some people think it may take until 2013 or so (as was said by one speaker at the Summit) until we get Full S3DHD broadcast. I hope it happens faster than that.

I'll be back on the show floor tomorrow to see if there's anything cool that I missed, then it's back to LA.

Are We seeing Movement In The 3DTV Space?

Jim here. TDVision just won the 2009 TV Innovations award for the category of Three Dimensional Television. There are a number of organizations involved in creating the standards for 3D Home Entertainment - I find it fascinating to see developments as they happen and how they will all fit together. The other finalists were BskyB and HDMI. TDVision's innovations include the 2D+Delta system of Full HD 3D and 2D compatible 3D coding.

Now dubbed 2009's top 3D TV technology enabler, TDVision's innovations include the 2D+Delta system of Full HD 3D and 2D compatible 3D coding.
"TDVision's entry was judged to be the most innovative in the 3D Television category by an independent panel of judges. We feel that this is a tremendous achievement for TDVision and I'd like to offer my personal congratulations to TDVision," said Ian Weightman of IMS Research.

"When we started at the beginning of the decade, we knew that there will be the need to deploy stereoscopic content in a digital format, optimized and compatible, that's when the TDVCodec was born. There were no 3D Displays so we made one, there were no 3D cameras available so we crafted one too, we ended up with the full stereoscopic true 3D HD infrastructure for digital, compatible, ubiquitous and multiplatform technology that enables the 3D Ecosystem," said Ethan Schur, Marketing Director for TDVision and acceptor of award at the gala awards ceremony located at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.

The TDVCodec 2D+Delta system was invented by TDVision CEO Manuel Gutierrez Novelo in 2001 and patented worldwide in 2003. The 2D+Delta system in an integral IP patent pertaining to current and future standards including MPEG2, MPEG4 and MPEG Multi View Coding.

TDVision Systems has generated massive interest in the past weeks starting with it's presentation of GPU accelerated 2D+Delta coding system at the nVidia GPU conference and continuing across the globe to the 3D International Fair held in Tandem with the Korean Electronics Show.

About TDVision:
TDVision Systems, Inc. is the owner of several 3D-related key patents now listed as part of different standard stereoscopic architectures like ISO, MPEG and AVC. TDVision's technology allows the acquisition, encoding, deployment, decoding and visualization of stereoscopic 3D HD video streams and computer-generated content within the 3D ecosystem. Quick Post: "Encode Once And Deploy Anywhere" - TDVision's TDVCodec

TDVision Systems To Show Worlds First and Only 3D/2D Compatible Full HD Stereoscopic Broadcast and Blu-Ray Format at 2009 Consumer Electronics Show

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--TDVision Systems, Inc., the leader in design and development of 3D digital infrastructures and visualization systems will be showcasing the TDVCodec encoding and decoding system for High Definition 3D Digital Video streams that supports Blu-Ray™ and broadcast at up to 1920x1080p resolution per-eye at CES 2009. The theme of the demonstration is “encode once and deploy anywhere.”

Stereoscopic HD3D is here. TDVision set the bar almost a year ago at CES and then in April 2008, presenting the working implementation of the TDVCodec running on a Blu-Ray™ disc and a 3D Ready DLP at NAB. Now we have optimized our systems and we are proud to demonstrate that this can be in your home today, working over existing pipelines, running on every existing and future 3D display at the best native resolution, even in 2D HD for backwards compatibility.” said Manuel Gutierrez, President and CEO of TDVision. “TDVision's patented technology has also been implemented as Intra-view coding in the MVC MPEG4 H.264 extension recommendation initiative by comparing the difference between left and right channels. This eliminates redundant information and optimizes the bandwidth required for a given infrastructure such as cable, satellite, ATSC 1.0/2.0 and Blu-ray™ disc. The TDVCodec is the best and only way to deploy HD 3D with no loss in color, quality, frame rate or resolution. All other existing technologies like spatial squeezing or display pre-formatted techniques defeat the purpose of realistic 3D imagery by cutting resolution in more than half and at times showing only 25 percent of the original pixels after formatting and presenting to a 3D Ready Display. TDVision has simply created the first class and preeminent codec that provides full 100% 1080p per eye as close as possible to the original content,” he continued.

"People use our high quality XpanD glasses in the theater and in the home to watch exceptional content in the best quality possible, that's why the TDVision System is so appealing to consumers that won't except anything less than true high definition 3D,” said Ami Dror of XpanD.

Attendees at CES 2009 will experience at the show high quality cinematic content encoded in the TDVision format playing back on a variety of devices including Texas Instruments™ enabled DLP, provided by Mitsubishi™, in conjunction with high quality shutter glasses from XpanD, 3D enabled LCD (passive glasses) from Hyundai™, a Planar™ display and all the way up to a Dual Projector System provided by Scalable Display Technologies running at full 1920x1080p per-eye. TDVision will also be showing the TDVirtualCam gaming technology which accurately emulates the way the eyes and brain perceive 3D information allowing for a very comfortable and engaging gaming experience on the XBOX® platform.

TDVision invites all CES visitors to the Las Vegas Convention Center, South Hall, lower level at exhibit #21425 and see for themselves. iZ3D has some exciting news: The world’s first 3D monitor for gamers is now available in retail stores making this solution the hottest available! iZ3D Inc. is pleased to announce that it’s popular 22-inch 3D monitor display system has leapt off the screens of online e-tailers into the real world of brick and mortar retail stores. iZ3D’s gaming display products are now being offered nationwide in Fry’s Electronics Incorporated® and Micro Center® stores, specialty retail superstores renowned for merchandising innovative consumer electronics products and technology breakthroughs. In addition to the physical store locations, both retail chains are offering the iZ3D monitor through online store destinations, joining Staples Online, NewEgg, Amazon, Critical Buy, and other e-tailers.

“The move to retail is another milestone in our pursuit of bringing 3D to the home market,” stated Thomas Striegler, CEO of iZ3D Inc. “Seeing games displayed with our 3D monitor startles the imagination and shatters memories of bad 3D from 1950’s theatrical effects and headache prone shutter glasses,” he adds.

In the past year, iZ3D has had growing success selling its monitor exclusively online. Since consumers lack experience with this new technology, seeing it proves a critical part of the purchasing decision. iZ3D faces the same challenges as the television industry as it educated consumers to shift from black and white to color, or standard to high definition. “You have to see it to understand it the first time, and selling our 3D monitor though retail represents an inflection point for the emerging 3D industry,” said Striegler.

Store locations in California, Arizona, and Nevada began offering the product in mid-December. The monitor solution will be available at all store locations by January 9, 2009, after which iZ3D will begin sponsoring in-store try-and-buy demo days. Consumers can easily find a listing of store locations and get information on iZ3D’s products and special offers at www.3drulez.com. In recent month’s iZ3D has made headlines as it introduced the first 3D monitors with custom painted designs from Smooth Creations®, released its new industry-standard-setting 3D display driver, announced channel distribution partnerships with Ingram Micro and D&H Distributing Company, made 3D monitors significantly more affordable.

The iZ3D 22-inch monitor has a new manufacturers suggested resale price of $399.00.

In addition to the design and marketing of 3D LCD displays, the company enables 3D content creation, and promotes the accelerated proliferation of 3D for entertainment and professional applications. To present an uncompromised 3D experience, the company’s development approach to 3D stereoscopic viewing includes optimizing solutions for gaming, home entertainment, and professional applications. Each solution is compatible with multiple graphics cards and includes high-performance LCD displays, lightweight passive polarized glasses, and blazingly fast software. The company is also developing next generation solutions and enabling content for home entertainment and professional applications needing 3D displays to view visually rich movies, photos, and three-dimensional graphics with amazing depth, brightness, and resolution. iZ3D was formed as a joint venture of Taiwan-based Chi Mei Optoelectronics, a worldwide leader in TFT-LCD manufacturing and Neurok Optics LLC, a US-based 3D technology developer and marketing company. The company distributes its products directly at the iZ3D online store and through major online and retail outlets. Please visit www.iz3d.com or call 858.646.3015 for more information.

This special feature, integrated exclusively for AMD (NYSE: AMD) customers – provides a customized 3D DLP output and is free for ATI Radeon™ graphics card users. The Version 1.09 driver is the latest stereoscopic 3D driver from iZ3D since the company first began releasing display drivers in 2006. The company ships 3D gaming monitors, which include a stereoscopic driver output for the iZ3D monitor and a standard anaglyph driver output. Other specialized 3D driver outputs are available at www.iz3d.com for USD$49.99 per license (each output).

To encourage 3D game play using ATI Radeon graphics cards, iZ3D is offering all ATI Radeon graphics card users a $50.00 rebate on the purchase of an iZ3D monitor. After installing the iZ3D monitor and driver, ATI Radeon graphics card users have 30 days to complete a simple form online and submit it to iZ3D to get the rebate. The rebate promotion is being promoted online and will be included in ATI Radeon graphics card packages and in-store at select retailers. For more information visit www.3drulez.com or www.iz3d.com.

“We appreciate the visual experience and excitement that is driving the trend towards 3D graphics,” said Godfrey Cheng, director of technical marketing, graphics products group, AMD. “3D gamers, designers and home theater enthusiasts will appreciate the sophistication that the ATI Radeon series of graphics cards will bring to the world of 3D. Our cards enable a feature-rich, 3D gaming and home theatre experience, especially when used in conjunction with an iZ3D 22-inch widescreen 3D display solution.”

“We’re on a mission to bring 3D into the mainstream. Combining the blazing fast speeds and breathtaking graphics from a high-end ATI Radeon graphics card with savings on your own personal iZ3D 22-inch widescreen monitor and get a gateway to the world of 3D. AMD’s selection of iZ3D’s stereoscopic 3D display solution demonstrates their vision and understanding that the future of graphics is a fusion of great hardware and software. iZ3D is a true pioneer in developing great 3D imaging drivers and hardware for the gaming community," remarked Thomas Striegler, CEO of iZ3D Inc.

See them at: Booth: Sands 73837A
Details: Minoru 3D webcam

The device itself is made to be cute, but functionally it's two eyes are approximately the same distance apart as our human eyes, allowing the capture of 3D images. The 3D webcam sells for about $80 to $100.

Meet Minoru, meaning “Reality” in Japanese, the worlds’ first 3D webcam. Connect Minoru to your PC and he will come alive, his eyes will light up and he will be looking at you in 3D.

Your friends and family can now see you in 3D over your favourite messaging program like MSN, Skype etc. You can also take 3D photos or even shoot 3D videos and upload to YouTube.

The downside to this tech is that it relies on anaglyph 3D so you will have to wear those ugly blue and red 3D glasses - although you do get five pairs in the box with this puppy. Man I wish this was modern 3D - I am getting so tired of this old school stuff. The point is though that it is easy to use, share and impress your friends.

The product simply rests on the top of your monitor and captures images with both eyes.

The Minoru was developed for the i-stage competition at the Consumer Electronics Association. Production is expected to ramp up in December and take the now prototype models into reality. You can also use it for 2D.

3D-At-Home Tech Shown at SMPTE Expo

Hi everyone, Michael here. Last week I saw an impressive demonstration of 3D-at-home tech at the SMPTE 2008 Tech Conference & Expo. TDVision, which makes a number of 3-D products, was showing off their 3-D media encoding/decoding technology on a Samsung 3-D ready DLP HDTV via shutter glasses. The 3-D footage--a combo of CG and live action--was vibrant, smooth, and immersive.

TDVision hopes to license their codec--which allows both 3-D and 2D versions of content to be stored on the same disc--to makers of DVD/Blu-ray players and set-top boxes. While their representatives were coy about giving a date when the first 3-D content utilizing their tech would hit the market, they did say that they have been having many discussions with the major studios and other 3-D content providers, as well as hardware companies such as Texas Instruments.

Above: Ethan Schur of TDVision (holding the TDVCam 3-D Camera) demonstrates TDVision's 3-D tech at the SMPTE Expo

Perhaps the most potentially revolutionary aspect of TDVision's presentation was their interactive 3-D virtual gaming world "AlterSpace", in which the "player" navigates around the environment using a controller and can choose to socialize with friends, surf the net, hold live video-conferences, view movie clips, images, and even play games. A 3-D version of the classic Pong which could be accessed through the virtual world was a particularly neat example of how 3-D can make something old new and exciting--and the stereo effect was quite pronounced and impressive.

I can't wait until 3DTV / 3D-At-Home becomes a reality...and it will have to become real soon if the studios want us to be able to purchase 3-D versions of big 3-D movies such as Bolt, Monsters Vs. Aliens, and eventually Avatar. There is a ton of movement in the industry towards this, so let's hope everything is worked out soon!

EXCLUSIVE: Watch 3D Movies On A Samsung? YES. NAB 2008 Demo Coming Up!

Are you ready for this? I have been speaking with Ethan and Manuel over at TDVision and they are set to bring 3D into the home starting at the NAB 2008 show. Check them out at booth C9042 in the central hall.

How the heck are they going to do this? Well it is quite ingenious actually and the light went off for me immediately once they took me on a stroll of their technology. Let's start with what they are actually going to show you at NAB:

1. TDVision will start by showing you many different movies and content titles in 2D. It will be on Blu-ray and will be played in a Playstation 3 unit. Pretty common setup for Blu-ray today right? You bet - the PS3's Blu-ray is one of the better choices on the market right now. Those titles that they will be playing include many blockbusters including "Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith" (provided by In-Three). This whole step is to show you that this new technology is backwards compatible with todays 2D technology - it simply will playback in 2D (Blu-rays have enough space to hold the info for many movie formats). Note that the Blu-ray disks being used here are encoded with 3D information, but that extra 3D code is ignored in favor of the 2D in the PS3.

2. They will then take that same Blu-ray disk out of the PS3 and pop it into their PC's Blu-ray drive. This PC will mimic the ability of future standalone 3D players to come.

3. The PC is hooked up two different devices for viewing:
- A 50" Samsung DLP HDTV : Note that these were recently on sale for less than $1000.
- TDVision's TDVisor which brings up the equivalent of a 72" screen @ 10' distance.

4. Everyone who is watching the Samsung dons their 3D polarized active glasses.

5. BINGO. "Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith" is popping out at you. On home theater equipment!

6. TDVision will also have 3D cameras hooked up so that you can see LIVE 3D streaming into the Samsung and TDVisors! Ever wanted to know how your butt looks in your jeans in 3D? Now you know.

HOW THEY DO IT:

The secret to all of this technological wizardry is quite simple actually: A new Codec (called the TDVCodec) for home electronics chips that are compatible. Codec stands for Coder / Decoder and it is the programming on a chip that takes the data from a Blu-ray disk (or other source) and presents it to a screen for viewing. Your equipment has these now. They decode the Blu-ray data to present your movies. TDVision has created a codec that can be automatically updated on your equipment so that you can view 3D.

The flip side of things is the disk itself. Will 3D encoded Blu-ray disks play on 2D equipment? YES. The 2D chips will simply ignore the extra 3D code and present just what it understands. There is no conversions that take place here - it just ignores the extra code - very elegant. THAT is the inherit beauty of the technology. Backwards compatibility. TDVision is working with all the major studios in making this happen - it is just a matter of time.

Consumers should not notice a difference in the price of Blu-ray disks when they buy a 3D enabled version vs. a 2D. Similarly, no new chip for your home electronics should need to be purchased - most are flash upgradeable (the PS3 is for sure!) and so therefore no expense is incurred for this either! Again, awesome news for consumers. TDVision makes their money from fees from the studios who license their TDVCodec technology. On a single disk, the difference in overhead to the studios is negligible.

You will be able to watch more than just 3D movies and Blu-ray content! 3D TV is on its way - Mark Cuban just broadcast a 3D NBA game via satellite to one of his theaters. The same can obviously be done for home satellite and cable systems. You will see 3D live events taking place first, then an increase in 3D TV recorded programming.

TDVision is not the only game in town that are showing off their wares. Another strong player is Sensio. Keep an eye on their offerings too - they even sell the compatible 3D movies on their website ("Jaws 3D", "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl", etc.). Look for wider distribution of studio 3D releases soon as more and more 3D box office successes become available: "Beowulf", "U2 3D", "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour", etc.

I will be updating you on all relevant 3D technology as it becomes available. For a list of all upcoming 3D movies check out the best list on the Net.
