Wow! I knew this was coming today and Fujifilm did not disappoint. The Finepix Real 3D W3 digital camera system officially launches in September and brings with it the ability to shoot hi-res 3D photos (1920x1080 or higher) as well as 720p HD video with stereo audio.
Your newly captured 3D media can then be viewed on most new 3D TVs (through the camera's mini HDMI v1.4 port) or printed (via Fujifilm's SeeHere.com - for example: 5x7" high precision prints with lenticular 3D technology for $6.99).
The W3 uses twin 10-megapixel CCD sensors and dual FUJINON (some of the world's best optics!) 3x optical zoom lenses (35-105mm) that are 75 mm apart. The synchronized control of the CCD sensors release the left and right shutters simultaneously.
You are not constrained to only use the camera in three dimensions as there are exciting W3 features that can be used for unique 2D shots as well. One example is the W3's Tele/Wide Simultaneous Shooting feature that allows photographers to zoom in on a subject while concurrently taking a wide-angle shot of the same scene!
The dimensions for the camera are just under an inch (21.0 mm) at its thinnest point and weighs 8.5 ounces with memory card and battery installed.
The camera has an autostereoscopic (glasses-free) 3.5" widescreen LCD 3D screen (1150K resolution) which uses the newly developed RP (Real Photo) processor 3D HD, which merges the left and right images into a single image/video. All of this is built into a nicely balanced stainless steel body.
Some further camera details:
- Switch 2D/3D Button to switch between capturing a subject in 2D or 3D instantly.
- One Touch Movie Mode using dedicated button to instantly changing from still to movie mode.
- Auto and Manual Parallax Control to automatically adjust parallax in 3D Auto mode for an optimal sense of depth.
- MyFinePix Studio 3D Movie and Photo Editor software allows manually editing captured 3D images effortlessly.
- Manual Shooting Functions with aperture and shutter priority.
- 13 scene positions to automatically optimize camera settings for some of the most common shooting environments.
- Super Intelligent Flash adjusts flash output and timing to capture subjects and background.
All this for a quite affordable $499.95 in early September. I am totally thrilled by this announcement! Consumers need more affordable choices for 3D at home and the W3 delivers. I hope to get one of these soon and I will post a review ASAP.
More info when I obtain it!!
Are we going to be getting S3DHD cameras built into our new phones soon? Could be if Sharp has anything to do with it. Sharp is tooting their own horn about producing a phone camera module that manufacturers could integrate into their designs, allowing stereoscopic 3D images at 1280x720p resolution.
Everything seems to be in order although the camera's size may put off some manufacturers. The module comes with two cameras and electronics to merge the color palette, brightness and contrast of the two "eyes".
I love how Sharp is getting deeply involved in portable S3D electronics. They also have developed their AS3D autostereoscopic (glasses-free 3D) screens.
Thanks to Matthew for the heads up!

Jim here. Once you get set up with NVIDIA's 3D Vision technology, the 3D world is your oyster. Case in point: Fujifilm has just released their Finepix Real 3D W1 - the world's first 3D point and shoot camera in North America. And it works with 3D Vision!
Yes the camera is pricey - $600. But for early adopters like a lot of us, it is time it happened! Further, you don't need 3d glasses to view the photos -or videos- you take with the camera; the rear LCD displays it in 3D for you. You can also buy Fujifilm's V1 Picture Viewer with an 8 inch screen for $500. Online ordering of actual 3D prints is done directly with Fujifilm for $6.99 each.
Even more good news is that Fujifilm has partnered with NVIDIA to deliver a way to view the photos on a regular screen (120Hz monitor that is) with their 3D Vision technology. So it really is the best of both worlds. With glasses or without.
This looks like perfect timing to me. With 3D movies and gaming absolutely booming right now and with 2010 holding the keys to 3D TVs - Fujifilm seems to be at the right place at the right time with the right product. I am hoping to try one out soon!
Hey guys - Jim here. Thanks to my friend Steve Weintraub over at Collider, we have photos of the ENTIRE POWER SUIT that we exclusively gave you a first look at here. It appears to be the same unit too as the number is 11!
Click on the images to blow up...
These things are MASSIVE! They appear to be 14 feet tall, just as we figured. Look at the detail - right down to the windshield wiper! And ahhhh... what sort of caliber do you think that ammo is? :-)
You can see in the back of the unit that they are indeed called AMPs. Not entirely sure what that stands for yet! Other than when you sit in it you are seriously AMPED UP.
Take a look at these shots and head on over to Collider for more photos...

Jim here. What is with all the cool 3D movie stories that the British Film magazines are getting lately? First Empire had these great images and now Total Film has what they are calling a 3D Extravaganza. Thanks to my intrepid reader in the UK, we have these images scanned for our viewing pleasure! Total Film has included red and blue glasses with the publication so that you can view these old school, anaglyph 3D images. If you have red and blue 3D glasses at home, you can view these as well, right now.
As much as I hate anaglyph, there is no better way to show 3D on paper and it is cool to see some new images from ALICE IN WONDERLAND and UP. I have also posted the image they have for AVATAR, but it is very disappointing as we know this to be a fake, fan created work. Total Film also includes 3D images from THE DARK KNIGHT, THE MATRIX, STAR WARS, BLADE RUNNER, THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING so I highly recommend picking up your own copy of Total Film to see those and the full articles too. I may be able to show you those images soon as well - stay tuned.
What IS interesting about the AVATAR image is the new quote from Ridley Scott that was in the article beside it: (breathlessly) "It's... Amazing"!
I want to again invite you to purchase your own copy of Total Film for the full coverage. I think they probably had someone convert 2D images to these 3D ones for the feature, but its still kinda cool. I doubt that they are official studio photos - which would infer that they are looking at "dimensionalizing" their properties to 3D. But damn, that would be nice!!
ALICE IN WONDERLAND looks like a trip doesn't it?!
"Dimensionalizing" is a term coined and trademarked by In-Three

Jim here. Entertainment Weekly is offering you a chance to see some movie stills from upcoming 3D movie animations if you happen to have a pair of anaglyph glasses hanging around.
Or you can get the glasses in the March 27 issue of Entertainment Weekly, on newsstands right now...
I personally don't like using them, but hey it is only some pics, not a movie. Kinda cool seeing TOY STORY and ALPHA AND OMEGA (2010) - So enjoy!
**SECOND SAME DAY UPDATE: I heard from the source that originally gave me the chamber info that this one looks very similar to the "avatar connection" ones that he saw - only they were much more vertical than horizontal.
Also he said that the circular area behind looks like the main security command area on the planet. He said that the command area was getting A LOT of attention so he thinks many of the scenes will be shot there.
He confirmed that this is definitely NOT one of the two labs (there is a very large lab and a smaller mobile lab that Weavers character spends a lot of time in). The lab areas have benches, equipment, girders and stuff hanging from the ceiling.
He conjectured that perhaps Cameron had this photo taken when many elements from different sets where all in one place. Could be!
From all that I have heard my feeling is that it is indeed the COMMAND CENTER behind Cameron and I am on the fence regarding the chamber - either it is a "avatar communication chamber" or perhaps a travel stasis chamber.
Jim here. WOW! A very exciting AVATAR photo this time courtesy of the NYTimes.
Features James Cameron standing behind one of his AVATAR chambers used in the movie! This is the chamber that humans lie down in to "connect" with their "avatars" on the planet Pandora.
**PERHAPS NOT! SAME DAY UPDATE: A reader over at Slashfilm states:
"I am a production assistant on this movie, I cannot disclose too much since I am under a contract not to say anything. First off, this is a space shuttle, as you can tell, the green screen is the front window and that circular area in the middle is the control station. Much like the movie Alien, the pod that James is looking at is a hyperbaric chamber where the crew sleeps while traveling at light speed. Since this movie takes place in a epic mystic future on a distant planet, its interesting to see how James mixes space and fantasy in this 3-D epic event. I feel I have said too much, but I have been an avid reader of slashfilm for sometime now and I really like the work you guys put into this blog. I hope this was some insight to the movie since this is all I can contractually say, I know the official trailer will be released with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen... Woops, now I've said too much, but thank god the internet can be anonymous!!!"
Hope you don't mind me posting the whole comment Peter - but it is quite interesting! That being said, it is hard to imagine a Production Assistant disclosing ANYTHING about this movie - let alone a release date for the trailer. This could very well be bogus. We shall see!
I had an earlier, first hand description of these structures from an eye witness way back DURING production if you will recall - you can read more about what he had to say here although clearly they are not upright! They must have changed this aspect of the labs.
The ever present green screen is in behind what looks to be the control room area for the chambers. And if you look closely, the chambers are filled with some sort of clear fluid. Interesting!
It is suspect that Signourney Weaver's character plays a large role in the discovery of being able to control their avatars through such a system.
It seems Fox is set on releasing their official AVATAR images through large media newspapers like the LA Times and NY Times so far. Here's hoping that they start to look at the blogoshere for some exclusivity (*ahem* - MarketSaw).
What do you guys make of the chamber?

Hey guys - Jim here. There are some awesome new 3D images taken by NASA's "High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment" (HiRISE) and designed for anaglyph 3D glasses which can be made or bought here.
The thought of being on another planet is the main driver behind this post - 3D brings us closer than ever before to actually feeling what it would be like to be approaching or on Mars. Next step: Holodeck right guys?

Thanks to Tim W. for sending in this item! A very cool consumer grade 3D camera may well be hitting the shelves soon by way of Fujifilm. They have a 2 lens camera but that is not the only component being waved around - they have also introduced a 3D digital photo frame and 3D print technology. They are calling the whole thing the "FUJIFILM FinePix Real 3D System".
Why on earth would they include the word "Real" when there is already a rather large going concern known as "Real D" also involved in 3D technologies (and have a consumer arm as well) is beyond me. Perhaps looking for publicity through a lawsuit? There is sure to be corrective action taken with that I assume.
Regardless, the technology looks very interesting in that they are offering the full meal ticket from camera to frame to photos. The idea is to have it all work seamlessly and simply for the average consumer. I think they are on to something!
Let's hope we hear more about this technology (probably with a different name next time) and be able to check them out at a CES show sometime soon.
