3D Geek Alert: Poppy 3D for iPhone!

Tim here: And it's here! Turn your iPhone into a 3D camera! Tim here, and one of my cousins forwarded me a link to this nifty new toy for your iPhone. I haven't gotten a chance to test it out yet, but I'm mighty curious!
From Poppy's Website (emphasis mine):

Poppy lets you capture beautiful images and videos in 3D using your iPhone's camera. Viewing through Poppy is immersive. It feels like loking into another world. It's a whole new way to capture and share your own experiences. Most of all, it's a lot of fun.
They even have a neat little video, which I've embeded below, of real world people testing it out. It's more than just a camera as it also allows you to view Stereoscopic 3D content playing through your iPhone. This will be great for the kids on those long car trips, when flying commercially, or just lounging aroudn the home. Check out the video!

How does it work?

  • Just put your iPhone in and begin capturing 3D video and pictures. Immediately view in 3D, or share and browse 3D from around the world.
  • Poppy uses mirrors to capture two stereographic images using your iPhone's single camera.
  • When you look in the viewfinder, Poppy's lenses combine the two images into a single 3D view.

  • It's available for $59.95 (USD), which is a bit pricy if you were to buy a set of four for a family. However, considering what most people pay for their iPhone's it's only a fraction of the cost of the phone for one.

I look forward to getting my hands on one of these to test it out. Especially for being able to watch Stereoscopic 3D content on my iPhone. Get more information and order yours on their official website: poppy3d.com

3D Geek Alert: Authentic Marvel Movie Memorabilia Up For Auction!!

Oh man I want to bid on some of these things! The set used THOR hammer Mjölnir - are you kidding me? What is that worth? Well as of now it's $3k+ and likely to climb nicely. You can check out the items for sale and bid too right here at Profiles In History.

Everything from a Pair of director’s chair backs "Captain America" and "Steve Rogers" (currently $225) to the original full-scale screen-used Mark II "Autopsy" suit from Iron Man 2 (currently $60k). Heck they even have Hugo Weaving's screen-worn Red Skull prosthetic makeup appliance!

    More on the suit:
Original full-scale screen-used Mark II “Autopsy” suit from Iron Man 2. Mark II “Autopsy” suit, appropriated from the military by Don Cheadle “Rhodey,” who proceeded to disassemble it (performing an “autopsy”) for examination of the technology in order to construct War Machine. Constructed by the visionary artists of Legacy Studios, this 75 in. tall figure is handcrafted of vacuum metalized fiberglass resin. It features intricate wire loom, metal hoses and cables, and discrete electronics detailing as well as faux actuators, pistons, and other suspension devices in the exposed joints and limbs. The figure was designed to lie down for the autopsy scene and has a number of armor plates removed to expose the suit’s inner circuitry. The removed sections include two leg greaves, right hip plate, right bicep plate, right shoulder plate, head plate, and most notably a removable main breastplate that reveals the inner cavity and bracing elements. An impressive and iconic figure from this groundbreaking film. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

Ahhh... to have some disposable cash right now! But hey if you have to ask how much it costs...

Let me know if any of you bid or win an item! Would love to know about the experience. Good luck!

3D Geek Alert: Hungry? How About A Dark Vador Burger!

Yes, it's spelled wrong to those of us in North America, but the French have known Darth Vader as Dark Vador since 1977 due to the translation.

As far as in-your-face marketing is concerned, this is definitely in-your-face and your mouth potentially.

The burgers are from France and is helping to merchandise the upcoming re-release of STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE 3D. They will be available for purchase until early March and come in three different takes: The Dark Burger which is the choice of the red meat loving Darth Maul, The Jedi Burger which seems to have Quebec poutine type cheese curds and white sauce and of course the aforementioned Dark Vador Burger which will attack the taste buds of any Darth Vader lovers. Yes, the Dark Vador Burger has an ALL BLACK BUN. Don't know that if you choke on it you sound like Vader trying to breathe.

You should read the comments section about this restaurant chain in France - apparently it's not a large leap to imagine choking on it!

HuffPo offers up the translations for the ads: "...the top asks onlookers to decide which side of The Force they want to align themselves with, while the bottom encourages them to eat more than five servings of fruits and vegetables a day."

Let's face it, these burgers are in a restaurant far, far away. So, in a battle to save your galaxy, which burger would you choose? Or would you abstain and take the easy way out? :-)

Thanks for the info on France's naming of Darth Vader and on the Quick hamburger chain HDVision!

3D Geek Alert: How About A Marvel Themed Office Desk?

Oh man, I need one of these! Check out this desk design by Tom Spina Designs that is a homage to Marvel's THE AVENGERS.

These are hand-crafted complete with a glass top, faux concrete construction and full lighting.

In front are Iron Man's mask and Arc Reactor, Cap's shield and Thor's hammer, Mjölnir.

In back are representations of Hawkeye and The Hulk's world with some tricked out arrows and a gamma radiation chamber respectively. Behind each side of the rear desk are compartments for office usage.

On top, the desk creators embedded an officially licensed Nick Fury's Needle Gun. Very cool.

I can imagine all of my Sideshow Collectibles displayed behind this thing on a credenza. Hmmm, I need to draw up some action plans! :-)

3D Geek Alert: Glasses-Free 200 Inch S3DHD Display Is Here! Watch Video...

Holy parallax 3D Batman! Where did this thing come from? I knew companies were working on such technology, but to actually having something that they are willing to show the public is a different thing entirely.

NICT (National Institute of Information and Communications) along with JVC Kenwood has just unveiled a 200" autostereoscopic (glasses-free) display. In order to achieve that first generation lofty goals, they have enlisted the use of 57 specially tuned projectors beaming on to a customized screen. The 500 kg condensor lens screen has a diffusion film that smoothly integrates all the different viewing angles into one singular and unique experience for every viewer.

The viewing angles are narrow (13 degrees wide, as opposed to 180 degrees for most displays) but there are 57 viewing angles in total that merge between themselves, all in full high definition.

The audience can individually walk around the room to see AROUND corners and objects.

NICT and JVC Kenwood also said that they are actively working on capturing video as well - presumably in some optimized fashion for this glasses-free display. Optimized video capture involves physical digital cameras being placed at 2cm intervals (which could prove challenging given the size of full frame sensors). They are getting around this at the moment by using CG virtual cameras which can be placed in any space without any significant limitation.

Next steps for them? Bumping up the number of projectors from 57 to 200! This increase will allow bigger much screen sizes.

Well I am stunned with this new technology.
Keep in mind this is first generation attempts! With pure CG films (like most of AVATAR for example), this display tech is viable right now if production was done with this output in mind.
Stay tuned for more when I get it!

BREAKTHROUGH! Independent 3D Filmmakers Pay Attention: 1080p 3D Shot With Panasonic Hacked GH-1's !!

Hey independent filmmakers out there - you know who you are! Or perhaps you have always dreamed of creating your own S3D 1080p videos on a super tight budget. Now perhaps you can!

Right away I will let you know that there is good news, some more good news and bad news.

The first piece of good news is that the bright minds over at Beampath have successfully synced two firmware hacked Panasonic Lumix GH-1's (affectionately now known as GH-13) on the "C" setting with the Nikon 10-24mm with iris controlling adapter all on a beamsplitter that has been optimized for the cameras. THIS IS HUGE. Huge because these are (or were) very affordable cameras. For more info on what equipment they are using check out this post. For more info on the firmware hack check this out.

Which leads me to the bad news - Panasonic saw that the GH1 had been hacked to open up its capabilities to the max and did not like that at all. So they released an update that effectively cut off the hack with all their new factory GH1's. Naturally the price of the older models shot up on eBay. It is very hard to find an available and hacked GH1 nowadays.

However, the second piece of good news is that Panasonic has announced their GH2 (coming in November I believe) which has some great specs, but not quite as good as the hacked GH1. I will wager that Tester 13 (the infamous hacker who broke into the GH1 firmware) will be trying his luck (or mastery) with the GH2 firmware soon - so keep it on MarketSaw for more info on that when and if it happens. The 3D hack controller for the GH1 will work for the GH2 too, just not the firmware hack itself.

Enough with the background. On with the results!! Check out the side by side video below and if you have the NVIDIA 3D VISION setup as I do, download the file here (side by side 3D - click link and 'save as') and watch it on your 3D monitor. Looks great! I had to slightly decrease horizontal parallax but once this small tweak was done it really looked spectacular. All this from a very affordable 3D setup.

Watching this is stereoscopic 3D really heightens the level of detail here as your brain merges the information from both eyes. Amazing!

So how affordable is this setup? Here is the cost breakdown of what was used with this video (Appreciate your help with this piece David!):
    Camera bodies - $600 X 2
    Lenses - $745 X 2
    Nikon adapters - $30 X 2
Hack controller - approx $50 in parts, batteries
Beamsplitter - $1999 (not sure what latest 3DFilmFactory price is - BUT - lots of guys build their own. figure $350 for the mirror)

TOTAL - $4,799. But, this can be done MUCH cheaper w/ used lenses and a DIY beamsplitter.

I am totally stoked about this news. I am so very close to pulling the trigger on buying either a hacked GH1 (you can find them on eBay or Craigslist) or waiting on the GH2 with a future hack. I will add the second camera later in 2011 so I can shoot in 1080p 3D. Just so we are clear here - you can shoot a feature film using this Panasonic system. I am not kidding. Not just home movies. Check out what these guys are doing with a hacked GH1 in 2D! And that is just one example.

I already have a Fujifilm FinePix W3 Digital Camera that I will be reviewing very shortly - that option should not be overlooked for your first consumer 3D camera. It is wonderful too! Stay tuned...

3D Geek Alert: Hackers Take Aim At Bringing S3D To The Panasonic GH1 !

Oh man, I hope these guys succeed! Would love to set up one of these rigs myself as I plan on getting into independent S3D filmmaking in the near future.

So what are they doing exactly?
Beampath3D is using two Panasonic Lumix GH1's (a micro 4:3 system) in a beam splitter rig and they are currently trying to achieve constant, reliable and perfect syncs. Further, they have taken their work and have pinged the genius hackers over on dvxuser for collaboration, so I expect something to break sometime soon on the sync issues.

    Says David Cole of Beampath3D:
    "
This is not our first rodeo with DSLR 3D rigs. In fact, our first rig was 5D MII-based. We failed to achieve adequate sync with the 5D's and all hope that the Magic Lantern firmware enhancement would come to our rescue has faded. But, there is good cause to be optimistic about the GH1. Most importantly, the GH13 firmware has opened up a world of possibility in image quality and customization of camera functionality to enhance 3D. Secondly, even with our current setup, it does work... sometimes."

Some of you may recall that a user by the name of "Tester 13" hacked into the Lumix GH1 and opened a pandora's box of options for the cool Micro 4:3 system. How about 50Mbps MJPEG @ 1080p (while the off-the-shelf camera is governed to 720p)? And you can shoot very very well in AVCHD too.

Check out this footage from a hacked GH1 (now affectionately dubbed "GH13" after Tester 13) - click HD and go full screen for the best viewing:

Keep in mind the Lumix GH1 is only a $1149 camera! You can't beat that value today in my books.

Here is the breakdown of exactly what equipment Beampath3D is using in case you want to chime in:
    1. 2X GH1’s with the GH13 hack.
    2. 2X SanDisk Extreme 16GB cards.
    3. 2X Olympus 9-18mm lenses (among other lenses).
    4. 3D Film Factory Mirrorbox (aka beamsplitter). We’re using the INDIE RIG, but the 3D-BS MINI RIG would be ideally suited to the GH1.
    5. Peter Wimmer’s free 3D Camera Sync Tester software running on a PC with an old-style CRT display.
    6. Dual-trace oscilloscope. Just about any dual-trace scope will work, but we’re using a Hantek DSO-2150 USB-based scope. They are cheap and effective.
    7. Breakout cables for the Mic/Remote jack.
    8. Breakout cables for the AV Out/Digital jack. We cut the computer-plug ends off of two spare GH1 USB cables.
    9. Twinned shutter-release remote switch, which places the appropriate resistance value to toggle recording onto the remote pins of each GH1 simultaneously.
    10. Twin power control. This is the heart of our attempt to sync the GH1s and it MAY be destructive to the cameras (however we’ve been at this for two months and have yet to have a single hiccup). We’re eternally switching the external power input to both cameras, while leaving the cameral power switches in the ON position. A diagram of our simple power control is available.

All of this makes for some pretty cool 3D hacking and a great 3D Geek Alert. Can't wait to see their results! Perhaps even adopt their set up myself - at least until the RED Scarlet comes on stream anyway :-) More info when I get it!

3D Geek Alert: Fujifilm Snaps Up Even More Attention With Their 2nd Generation 3D Consumer Camera!!

Wow! I knew this was coming today and Fujifilm did not disappoint. The Finepix Real 3D W3 digital camera system officially launches in September and brings with it the ability to shoot hi-res 3D photos (1920x1080 or higher) as well as 720p HD video with stereo audio.

Your newly captured 3D media can then be viewed on most new 3D TVs (through the camera's mini HDMI v1.4 port) or printed (via Fujifilm's SeeHere.com - for example: 5x7" high precision prints with lenticular 3D technology for $6.99).

The W3 uses twin 10-megapixel CCD sensors and dual FUJINON (some of the world's best optics!) 3x optical zoom lenses (35-105mm) that are 75 mm apart. The synchronized control of the CCD sensors release the left and right shutters simultaneously.

You are not constrained to only use the camera in three dimensions
as there are exciting W3 features that can be used for unique 2D shots as well. One example is the W3's Tele/Wide Simultaneous Shooting feature that allows photographers to zoom in on a subject while concurrently taking a wide-angle shot of the same scene!

The dimensions for the camera are just under an inch (21.0 mm) at its thinnest point and weighs 8.5 ounces with memory card and battery installed.

The camera has an autostereoscopic (glasses-free) 3.5" widescreen LCD 3D screen (1150K resolution) which uses the newly developed RP (Real Photo) processor 3D HD, which merges the left and right images into a single image/video. All of this is built into a nicely balanced stainless steel body.

    Some further camera details:
    - Switch 2D/3D Button to switch between capturing a subject in 2D or 3D instantly.
    - One Touch Movie Mode using dedicated button to instantly changing from still to movie mode.
    - Auto and Manual Parallax Control to automatically adjust parallax in 3D Auto mode for an optimal sense of depth.
    - MyFinePix Studio 3D Movie and Photo Editor software allows manually editing captured 3D images effortlessly.
    - Manual Shooting Functions with aperture and shutter priority.
    - 13 scene positions to automatically optimize camera settings for some of the most common shooting environments.
    - Super Intelligent Flash adjusts flash output and timing to capture subjects and background.

All this for a quite affordable $499.95 in early September. I am totally thrilled by this announcement! Consumers need more affordable choices for 3D at home and the W3 delivers. I hope to get one of these soon and I will post a review ASAP.

More info when I obtain it!!

3D Geek Alert: Now Companies Are Innovating! Simple New 3D Lens For Panasonic's G Series On Its Way!!

Wow. Love this elegant solution for capturing 3D at home! As we have seen in the past, if you wanted home 3D you had to buy an all in one unit and foot the bill accordingly. Moreover, while they are indeed 3D cameras, they were one dimensional with regard to flexibility.

Now enters Panasonic with a truly wonderful innovation! I do not know how well if performs yet, but on a purely high level the new 3D Lens for the LUMIX G Micro System Series (a Micro 4:3 system) seems to hit all the needs of today's consumers.

The system utilizes two integrated optical systems within a single lens assembly feeding left and right eye images to a single (and flexible) CCD to be processed by Panasonic's 3D image system.
The interchangeable lens assembly is very compact too. The result should be very elegant: No time lags or distortion between left and right eyes, even when shooting moving objects

Screen Digest says that by 2014 there will be 3DTVs in about a quarter of all homes in major markets. That is an impressive figure. Someone has to provide consumer solutions to capture all those family moments in 3D and Panasonic is definitely stepping up (Canon and Sony will also probably do something similar for their interchangeable lens camera systems, but they will most likely be beamsplitters by design, and therefore bulky).

I am loving the innovation I have been seeing lately in consumer home 3D electronics. Impressive thinking is taking place. I will more than likely be picking up one of these G series cameras now that 3D is involved. :-)

The Future Of 3D Home Theater: LaserTV! Mitsubishi's 75-LT1 Being Released In Japan This Month

As far as I am concerned, Laser TV is the future of 3D home entertainment - and the price will get lower as time goes by. The Mitsubishi 75-LT1 is being released on August 21 in Japan for the rather hefty price tag of $8500.

So what makes it so great?
Other than it's impressive size which is 75 inches and resolution (1920x1080), it utilizes the company's Laser TV technology. The lasers DOUBLE the color range of what is found on a normal HDTV and at the same time using about a quarter of what current TVs use in power consumption. LCDs and Plasmas can only reproduce about 40% of the colors a human eye can see, while a Laser TV can reproduce 90%. Further, that color intensity lasts for the life of the TV while others technologies don't. Laser TVs are typically about half the weight of LCDs and Plasmas too.

Two pairs of active shutter 3D glasses are included in the price.

    The 75-LT1 also comes with a built-in BS.110/CS digital TV Tuner, 5x HDMI inputs and 1x HDMI output, 1x D-Sub port, built-in 2x 10Watts speakers and 3x S-Video ports.

Sounds stunning to me! Would love to try out one of these things... Mitsubishi, send me an email will you? I want to review!! :-) Will let you know about North American availability ASAP.

3D Geek Alert: First Batch Of Panasonic S3DHD TVs Sell Out

Jim here. Not surprising and not really something to laud about because we simply do not know how many were actually bought yet - BUT - all of Panasonic's S3DHD TVs were sold out in the first week of release this month.

They were sold in bundles which is good because everyone loves a good combo. $2900 got you a 50" S3DHD Plasma, 3D Blu-ray Player and one pair of 3D glasses.

Look for increased sales of the systems throughout the year
, especially when the 3D AVATAR Blu-ray comes out (hopefully in November, in time for the holidays).

It won't hurt the ratings or 3D TV sales when The Masters is televised in S3DHD - complete with the infamous return to golf for Mr. Tiger Woods this April 5-11, 2010.

The cost? $69.99 - not bad for quite a nice collectible! The Viper Wolves will be coming out at $79.99 in January 2011. I don't like the cheap plastic knock offs that seem to come out all the time - I like substantial pieces. These are definitely going on my collector's shelf :-)

3D Geek Alert: Comin' At Ya! Sony Unveils Three New S3DHD Blu-ray Players

Jim here. Well we don't have their complete pricing (one price is disclosed below) or official launch date yet but we do have some details to pass on to you about Sony's three new entries into the S3DHD blu-ray player race.

    Sony's BDP-S370, BDP-S570 and BDP-S770
(pictured) all feature Blu-ray 3D playback. When they are connected to the Internet via broadband they can also stream entertainment from Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, Slacker Internet Radio, Pandora, NPR, and of course Sony. There are 25 partners in the Sony BRAVIA Internet Video Platform.

Further, you can use your iPhone/iPod Touch as a remote control device for these units (with a downloaded app). The app also includes functionality to access cover art for movies, music, actor and production information as well as that all important search capability for additional media. Keep in mind that the App Store has this particular app called "BD Remote" rated as 2.5 stars out of 5.

The BDP-S770 has Wi-Fi built in, DLNA and a front USB input to act as a media converter. Something else - it has a quick start feature to improve the lag time when starting these units up.

Here are the details for the other two units:
BDP-S570 Blu-ray Disc player features built in Wi-Fi wireless (802.11) with WPS for easy access to Sony's BRAVIA Internet Video platform and BD-LIVE functionality.
    Other features include:
    • DVD, CD, and SA-CD playback
    • IP Content Noise Reduction
    • Entertainment Database Browser with Gracenote technology
    • BD Remote (iPhone/iPod touch BD Remote Control application)
    • Photo, music, and video playback via front USB and DLNA (firmware update required)
    • DVD upscaling to near high definition with Precision Cinema HD Upscaling
    • Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD Master Audio decoding
    • Quick start and fast loading

Sony's BDP-S370 Blu-ray Disc player, shipping this spring, also offers full HD 1080p picture quality and access to the BRAVIA Internet Video platform and BD-LIVE functionality.
Other features found in this model include:
    • DVD, CD, and SA-CD playback
    • Entertainment Database Browser with Gracenote technology
    • BD Remote (iPhone/iPod touch BD Remote Control application)
    • Wi-Fi-ready (UWA-BR100 USB wireless LAN adapter sold separately)
    • Photo, music, and video playback via front USB and DLNA (firmware update required)
    • DVD Upscaling to near high definition with Precision Cinema HD Upscaling
    • Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD Master Audio decoding
    • Quick start and fast loading

Great to see these units ramping up production! The BDP-S570 will lighten your wallet by about $250 - well worth it! Samsung had better rethink their $399 price point for their BD-C6900. You will need to flash your firmware as well once the Blu-ray 3D update is ready. Can't wait to start comparing some of these units.
