MUST WATCH: New Trailer For PACIFIC RIM Will Drop Your Jaw!

I have to say that PACIFIC RIM has jumped ahead of every action movie I want to see this summer, including IRON MAN 3 and MAN OF STEEL. If you have any doubts yourself, check this trailer from WonderCon.

There are some visual spoilers in this thing so consider yourself warned. One Kaiju in particular is going to blow your mind, but don't take my word for it - have a look. If you dare ruin your theatrical experience that is!

Here's the storyline for the movie:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

PACIFIC RIM opens on July 12.

Netflix Adds 3D Streaming!

Tim here, with some really exciting news for Netflix subscribers! It turns out that along with the Super HD feature Netflix provides subscribers can also now stream 3D movies and television content for select titles in the United States with the following devices:

Sony PlayStation 3 (connected TV must support 3D)
LG TV Series: LM6200, LM6400, LM6600, LM6650, LM6700, LM7600, LS5700, LS5750, PM4700, PM6700, PM6900, PM9700

Additional device support coming soon!

To stream titles in 3D, your Internet Provider needs to be connected to Netflix's new content delivery network - Netflix Open Connect. I visited their Super HD page to see if my Internet Provider is connected and found that it isn't. Not yet, as I can contact them to ask them to connect. Open Connect is required for both Super HD and 3D streaming.

If you have a compatible device and your Internet Provider is connected to Netflix Open Connect, you can find 3D titles by looking for the 3D logo. Please note that 3D streaming requires an Internet connection speed of at least 6Mb/s, while 12Mb/s will deliver their highest 3D video quality. Some of the titles available today for 3D Streaming are: The Adventures of Tintin, Jackass 3D, 3D Dive, 3D Safari, Dolphins: The Ultimate Guide, Sky Soldier, AniMen: The Galactic Battle, Oscar's Oasis 3D, Angelo Rules 3D, and Plankton Invasion 3D.

Also, in a recent interview Netflix Chief Product Officer Neil Hunt said that Netflix subscribers can also expect 4K streaming in a year or two. This can only help improve the quality for 3D Streaming. From his point of view "streaming will be the best way to get the 4K picture into people's homes. That's because of the challenges involved in upgrading broadcast technologies and the fact that it isn't anticipated within the Blu-ray disc standard." He goes on to add "4K will likely be streamed first before it goes anywhere else." Combined with the 3D Streaming service this will mean that Netflix will continue to dominate the home entertainment industry.

Some very exciting services coming out of Netflix this year and in the next year or two. Their 3D Streaming selections will only increase over time. Hopefully soon they'll also do their own orignal series in 3D just as they did with House of Cards, which was shot in 4K. Keep a watch out for Netflix 3D!

Must Watch: First Trailer For THOR: THE DARK WORLD

Love the cosmic feel of this movie! Before time? WOW. Thor has always been about god-like powers so why not talk about such things?

Keep in mind that the director stepping into Kenneth Branagh's shoes (who did the original THOR), is TV's Alan Taylor (GAME OF THRONES, MAD MEN, THE SOPRANOS, DEADWOOD) - a very experienced and versatile helmer. Really looking forward to see what he is bringing to the franchise.

Great seeing the old characters return to the franchise and the thought of Thor and Loki teaming up, if even for fleeting moments, truly is quite exciting!

Here's the storyline for the movie:
Marvel's THOR: THE DARK WORLD continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel's THOR and Marvel's THE AVENGERS, Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos...but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

Director: Alan Taylor
Writer: Robert Rodat
Studio: Marvel Studios
Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Rene Russo, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Stellan Skarsgard, Christopher Eccleston, Idris Elba, Chris O'Dowd

THOR: THE DARK WORLD opens on November 8, 2013

Watch: First Clip From STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS 3D

Aren't those interesting suits? Definitely worthy of some sort of discussion by themselves!

Regardless, the first clip from STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS has been bestowed upon us and I'm liking the character studies in it - very, very traditional character studies. Scotty has his familiar rant, Bones has his special relationship with Spock, Kirk is conflicted and Spock has his familiar catch phrase. The only real difference from the original series and this movie is the new Uhura - Spock arc from J.J. Abrams first go around.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
In the wake of a shocking act of terror from within their own organization, the crew of The Enterprise is called back home to Earth. In defiance of regulations and with a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads his crew on a manhunt to capture an unstoppable force of destruction and bring those responsible to justice.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS opens in IMAX 3D on May 15 and wide on May 17.

Watch: Six Minutes Of Behind The Scenes Footage From IRON MAN 3!

I love behind the scenes footage. I can't get enough of it. Maybe because it minimizes spoilers yet still gets you into the action before a movie is released. Maybe because I love filmmaking in general and you can see the cameras, director and crew in action. Want to see what's green screen and what's not? How the practical effects are done? Watch these BTS clips from IRON MAN 3.

Slight warning - there are some visual spoilers in this, but of so very brief. I had no trouble watching it, but fair warning to you.

Here's the movie's storyline:
Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Enjoy the clip! IRON MAN 3 opens on May 3.

MUST WATCH: New MAN OF STEEL Trailer - A Wake Up Call For Marvel

DC Comics and Warner Bros are FINALLY flexing their muscles with potentially the greatest superhero ever created in what seems to be a movie that does the character and the Krypton universe justice.

Has Zach Snyder pulled it off? Has Chris Nolan now seen what is possible with 3D? Is this the best standalone (non-ensemble) superhero movie ever made? There is a lot riding on this film. Superman is without a doubt the most valuable commodity DC Comics has and the keystone in the upcoming Justice League ensemble movie that's planned. Make no mistake, Warner Bros and Snyder CANNOT mess this up. Failure is not an option.

I'm the first to admit I've always been a Marvel guy - except for Superman. He transcends any kind of brand allegiance - he simply is... singular.

This trailer hints at the greatness that is needed. The opening Krypton scenes with Russell Crowe as Jor-El look AMAZING. The young Clark Kent scenes look authentic and viable. The Henry Cavill scenes look very, very good. Still not sure if he can top Christopher Reeve, but heck it's looking good. It's always hard to beat the first actor in a role. Just ask any James Bond since Sean Connery.

I think MAN OF STEEL should be a wake up call for Marvel. There is valid competition now. More than that, this is Superman. Marvel can't trip up now. DC is finally revving up.

What do you guys think? I love the score so far by the way!

Here's the storyline for the movie:
In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Cavill) is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone’s imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question – Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as “Superman,” not only to shine as the world’s last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.

MAN OF STEEL opens on June 14.

Michael Bay Shooting TRANSFORMERS 4 With New Small Form Factor 3D IMAX Cameras

Here's an interesting story out of Cinemacon (unfortunately I couldn't make it this year!) from a friend of mine, Steve Weintraub of Collider. He had a brief chance to talk with Michael Bay and he made the most of it - Steve can work wonders in a short period of time and he asked exactly what I would have asked him too if I could have made it down to Vegas.

Essentially Bay said that IMAX has given him very expensive, new small form factor (Bay shows us the size using his hands) 3D IMAX cameras to use on TRANSFORMERS 4. To top that off, there is so much data streaming out from these things (VERY high resolution), that Bay's finishing company would not be able to handle it all if he was to shoot the movie in this way. That's saying a lot knowing that Bay does NOT use cheap services. So, Bay will only be shooting key scenes with these cameras for TF4.

Bay also revealed that he will not be shooting in HFR (high frame rate).

Here's the interview from Collider - enjoy!

First Look: Jamie Foxx As Electro! Leaked Set Pics From THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

Wow! Jamie Foxx looks like a villain to be reckoned with in these shots and they aren't from the movie - just BTS (behind-the-scenes).

Electro is one of my favorite bad guys from the Spider-man menagerie of mayhem so I'm thrilled that he's looking so good here. I thought The Lizard wasn't quite up to standard in the first Marc Webb reboot, so I'm on the edge of my seat to see what he's doing here in the second.

This second effort from Webb is not being shot in native 3D due to Webb's desire to shoot in anamorphic format. It'll be post converted into stereoscopic 3D. I'm not on board with that decision as I thought his use of the Red Epics and 3ality Technica's rigs in the first go was stellar.

Here's the movie's storyline:
In THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 opens on May 2.

MUST WATCH: Last Trailer For STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS!

Check the latest and greatest trailer for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS from J.J. Abrams and Paramount. I'm loving it. It looks like it is topping the first effort from Abrams on all fronts and that can only be good. Here's hoping!

Here's the storyline for the movie:
In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS opens on May 15 (IMAX) and May 17 (wide).

New TV Spot For THE GREAT GATSBY: Non Stop Parties!

Here's a new TV Spot for THE GREAT GATSBY musically paced by Fergie's "A Little Party Never Killed Nobody". Certainly the movie is going to dazzle and time will tell if the score is commendable - but I love the pace of what I have seen so far.

Baz Luhrmann's movie is significant for stereoscopic 3D because it marks the first foray into a true drama as opposed to something like HUGO which was more of a family adventure film. It's important as a 3D aficionado to get out and see this movie because it's breaking new ground here. History in the making! 3ality Technica provided 3D rigs and services for the shoot.

THE GREAT GATSBY features music by Jay Z, Beyonce X Andre 3000, Will.i.am, Fergie + Q Tip + Goonrock, Lana Del Rey, Florence + The Machine, The Bryan Ferry Orchestra, The XX, Gotye, Nero and Sia.

Here's the movie's storyline:
THE GREAT GATSBY follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan), and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without of the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

THE GREAT GATSBY opens on May 10.

Check the new Poster and banner for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS.

The ship seems to be over the PACIFIC RIM experiencing the effects of GRAVITY and soon the California coast weather will be CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF ENTERPRISE. See what I did there?

It's an impressive poster hinting at what is in store for us in the movie. Can't wait!

NAB Show 2013: Dolby, Philips And CPG Partner On Autostereoscopic 3D TV

My good friend David Cohen over at Variety broke this story involving the new partnership of Dolby Laboratories, Royal Philips Electronics and the Cameron Pace Group for the support of autostereoscopic (glasses-free) 3D TV. Very interesting development!!

"3D is not really going to be successful as a mainstream viewing medium for consumers until it’s as easy as sitting down and watching the content," said Giles Baker, SVP, Broadcast Business Group of Dolby. "In order to deliver that best experience, you really need to embed a deep understanding of how the content was created into the 3D content."

Says Vince Pace of the Cameron Pace Group:  "The model for 3D success is from companies that know what they’re doing, know the combination of quality and technology. So Dolby was perfect fit for CPG."

"People will see entertainment as they experience everyday life and CPG will take the business steps to make that happen. That was done in the theatrical world, when Jim (Cameron) committed to making a film in 3D when digital cameras, digital cinemas, were all in their infancy. If you look at the broadcast model, to describe it as in its infancy is correct. But we see that as an opportunity for us. That’s the kind of market we like to play in."

The article paraphrases what Steve Schklair of 3ality Technica told Variety: '3D live broadcasting had stalled in part because of the lack of a strong business model in the U.S.'.

I will update this story as it unfolds, but for now it's an exciting next step toward glasses free 3D and the future of the small screen.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Starts Principal Photography - Black Widow Starring Role

A cool new back shot of Cap and his shield kick off the production of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER! Check out the press release below including the acknowledgement that Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow will play a major role in the movie.

Here's the press releases from Marvel (emphasis is mine):

MARVEL STUDIOS BEGINS PRODUCTION ON 2nd INSTALLMENT OF THE

ICONIC FRANCHISE “CAPTAIN AMERICA”

Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” Commences Principal Photography

In Preparation for April 4, 2014 Film Release

BURBANK, Calif. (April 8, 2013) – Following in the footsteps of the record-breaking Marvel Studios’ release, “Marvel’s The Avengers,” production on the highly anticipated release, Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” has commenced in Los Angeles, Calif., with production also including locations in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington D.C. Directing the film is the team of Anthony and Joe Russo (“Welcome to Collinwood”) from a screenplay written by Christopher Markus (“Captain America: The First Avenger”) & Stephen McFeely (“Captain America: The First Avenger”). Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” returns Chris Evans (“Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Marvel’s The Avengers”) as the iconic Super Hero character Steve Rogers/Captain America, along with Scarlett Johansson (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” “Iron Man 2”) as Black Widow and Samuel L. Jackson (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” “Iron Man 2”) as Nick Fury. In addition, film icon Robert Redford has joined the all-star cast as Agent Alexander Pierce, a senior leader within the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is set for release in the U.S. on April 4, 2014.

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” will pick-up where “Marvel’s The Avengers” left off, as Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C.

Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1941, Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” features an outstanding supporting cast that includes Sebastian Stan (“Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Black Swan”) as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie (“The Hurt Locker,” “Million Dollar Baby”) as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Cobie Smulders (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” “How I Met Your Mother”) as Agent Maria Hill, Frank Grillo (“Zero Dark Thirty”) as Brock Rumlow and Georges St-Pierre (“Death Warrior”) as Georges Batroc. Rounding out the talented cast are Hayley Atwell (“Captain America: The First Avenger”) as Peggy Carter, Toby Jones (“Captain America: The First Avenger,” “The Hunger Games”) as Arnim Zola, Emily VanCamp (“The Ring 2,” “Revenge”) as Agent 13 and Maximiliano Hernández (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” “Thor”) as Agent Jasper Sitwell.

Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing the film. Executive producers on the project include Alan Fine, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Michael Grillo and Stan Lee. The creative production team on the film includes director of photography Trent Opaloch (“Elysium,” “District 9”), production designer Peter Wenham (“21 Jump Street,” “Fast Five”), editors Jeffrey Ford, A.C.E. and Mary Jo Markey, A.C.E. (“Star Wars: Episode 7,” “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”) and three time Oscar®-nominated costume designer Judianna Makovsky (“The Hunger Games,” “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”).

Marvel Studios’ upcoming release schedule includes “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013, and “Thor: The Dark World” on November 8, 2013. The studio most recently produced the critically acclaimed “Marvel’s The Avengers,” which set the all-time, domestic 3-day weekend box office record at $207.4 million. The film, which shattered both domestic and international box office records, is Disney’s highest-grossing global and domestic release of all time and marks the studio’s fifth film to gross more than $1 billion worldwide.

In the summer of 2011, Marvel successfully launched two new franchises with “Thor,” starring Chris Hemsworth, and “Captain America: The First Avenger,” starring Chris Evans. Both films opened #1 at the box office and have grossed over $800 million worldwide combined. In 2010 “Iron Man 2,” starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury took the #1 spot in its first weekend with a domestic box office gross of $128.1 million.

In the summer of 2008, Marvel produced the summer blockbuster movies “Iron Man” and “The Incredible Hulk.” “Iron Man,” in which Robert Downey Jr. originally dons the Super Hero’s powerful armor and stars alongside co-stars Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges, Shaun Toub and Gwyneth Paltrow, was released May 2, 2008, and was an immediate box office success. Garnering the number one position for two weeks in a row, the film brought in over $100 million in its opening weekend. On June 13, 2008, Marvel released “The Incredible Hulk,” marking its second number one opener of that summer.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER will open on April 4, 2014.

London Gets Hammered Again - This Time In A New STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Poster

First London is annihilated in G.I. JOE: RETALIATION and now it's clearly in trouble again in STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS. I'm rather partial to London having walked most of the Thames area so that will be enough now thank you. :-)

The poster hints further than just London hurting though, with the "Earth Will Fall" title. The box office opens for the UK run of STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS tomorrow (releases May 9 there).

Here's the movie's storyline:
In the wake of a shocking act of terror from within their own organization, the crew of The Enterprise is called back home to Earth. In defiance of regulations and with a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads his crew on a manhunt to capture an unstoppable force of destruction and bring those responsible to justice.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS opens on May 9 (UK), May 15 (US / Canada IMAX) and May 17 (US Wide).

New Behind The Scenes Footage And Concept Art From THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

Peter Jackson is at it again and gives us some footage from that March Live Event that Tim covered for us. Warner Bros. has allowed about 6 minutes of the event to be given to us and so have a look below. The concept art that I screen capped are labeled as: LITTLE RIVERS - Mirkwood Forest Gully Concept V. 13, and Mirkwood ERIDOR Wide Concept, respectively.

Also PJ left a note about the video on his Facebook page:
Thanks to everyone who tuned into our Live Event last week. I’ve never done anything like that before, and I was pretty nervous. Hope it was ok.

If you saw it, it was a pretty accurate picture of what life is like at the moment. Jabez and I sit in that editing room all day, every day, editing the second Hobbit movie, and we actually start on the third next week! A lot of that movie was shot nearly a year ago, so I’m looking forward to seeing it come alive, shot by shot in the cutting room. It’s like assembling one of those complex 2000 piece jigsaw puzzles.

For us, this is really the being of 2013, so I look forward to posting a bunch more stuff as we work through the year.

I think that an edited version of the Live Event is being made available over at the official Hobbit site, and Warner Bros have kindly let me post a 6 min excerpt here, to give everyone who missed it a sense of what it was like.

Cheers,
