...AND Just Like, That Sony Announces Playstation 4 3D Blu-ray Support !

BOOM. Just as Microsoft announces its first ever support of 3D Blu-ray discs in the XBOX One, Sony has stepped up to the plate and stated that its PlayStation 4 will also get 3D Blu-ray disc support with its next software update (v1.75) coming next week!

For all of you PS4 owners, there was no mention of other home theater features in the mix yet, like Bluetooth remote, MP3 playback or DLNA but really, that has to be coming soon too. For those of you in the UK, you now have support for Sky's NOW TV app (XBOX One version coming soon) which gives you subscription based on-demand movies (£8.99 monthly), TV shows (£4.99) and sports (£9.99).

I'm still using my PS3 for 3D Blu-ray playback and it remains my hub of entertainment.

Thanks for the heads up Johnno!

SDCC 2014: First Poster For THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES; First Look This Saturday In Hall H !

Glorious! Love this poster!! It's not often I am so elated by a poster but in this case I will make an exception. The Hobbit's twitter account just launched the movie into marketing mode with this poster and that Warner Bros will host a first look in Hall H, Saturday at 10am. So if you're at the San Diego Comic-con and are planning on lining up... do so right now!

Think about it. The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The first two Hobbit movies. Decades of trials and tribulations to get this all on screen and it all boils down to this final chapter! Smaug is rolling in!

The poster amplifies the setting, depicting the great dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch) staring down Bard the Bowman (Luke Evans) of Lake-Town. And yes, Lake-Town is made of wood. Uh-oh.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town. Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbo’s frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide – unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.

THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES opens on December 17 in HFR 3D, 3D and IMAX 3D. This marks the end of one of the greatest fantasy epics ever told, and presumably the end of the Tolkien Middle-earth universe as well, at least for quite some time. Sad really. I hope this movie owns up to it's pedigree. THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES is shot in native 3D using 3ality Technica rigs in 48 frames per second. Can't wait!!

Must Watch: Five Minute Extended Clip From GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Alright. Marvel's marketing machine has slammed out another home run with this five minute extended clip from James Gunn's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. I have to say there is nothing I do not like about this movie thus far!

We all love STAR WARS and I'm thinking that GOTG may be the closest thing yet to that style of movie outside of Lucasfilm. An epic space comedy - with Marvel flair. Have to say the casting looks spot on too. Music, check. Visual effects? Cmon - it's Marvel. 3D? More superlative work from Stereo D. I can't find a hole yet. This could be a monster hit for a bunch of original characters that not many outside of the comic book world know anything about.

I won't spoil the clip for you - but it's certainly worth the 5 minutes! As far as content and how it relates to the movie, there are a few pieces of information that we hadn't known officially yet about Gamora and some cool visual effects shots but I'd say it was pretty well chosen to illustrate the quality of the movie, build excitement and yet not give too much away. I say watch it - but I understand if you are trying to avoid these clips for a pristine viewing experience opening night.

Anyway - for those that want to, here's the clip. ENJOY!! Dave - thanks for the heads up!

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY opens on August 1.

Here's the storyline:
An action-packed epic space adventure, Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits – Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand – with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is presented by Marvel Studios.

Finally! XBOX ONE Gets 3D Blu-ray Support

Yes! Finally Microsoft will be implementing 3D Blu-ray support for it's XBOX ONE console with a new software update coming in August. This marks the first time the XBOX platform will offer the cool feature.

This is HUGE news in the platform gaming and entertainment field. 3D support adds the immersion that is expected with console owners as anyone with a PS3 and 3D TV will attest to.

Some other improvements coming with the update:
  • Activity feed updates, and expanded friend area on Home screen: you'll be able to see what your friends are doing, and be more aware of it right from the Xbox One dashboard. And it'll show how long a friend's been away from his or her console.
  • Mobile purchases: You can buy games or other content from the SmartGlass app or from Xbox.com, and have it download right to your Xbox One remotely.
  • Low battery notification: You can already peek at your controller's battery level, but a pop-up warning now lets you know when it needs a recharge.
  • Disable notifications during video: It's amazing this wasn't available before.
  • OneGuide in Brazil, Mexico, Austria and Ireland: Four more countries can try connecting their Xbox One to their TV and browse TV listings.
Those with early preview access could get these updates as soon as this week.

Sony's Playstation 4 still hasn't updated with 3D support as of yet, but it is expected as they did with the Playstation 3 support for 3D Blu-rays (that I am still enjoying tremendously).

Now I'm considering an XBOX ONE purchase whereas I've always been a Sony guy. Congratulations on the 3D support Microsoft! Thanks for the heads up Tobias!

Two New TV Spots For TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES

Obviously the world wants more Michael Bay-ish action (TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION just hit $750m worldwide) and they are in for just that with TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES which is being produced by Bay.

These TV spots highlight more of the interactions between the turtles themselves and with reporter April O'Neil (Megan Fox). William Fichtner is in this movie. I repeat, WILLIAM FICHTNER is in this movie.

TMNT looks like some good popcorn fun for the family with heavy emphasis on VFX.

Here is the storyline for the movie:
The city needs heroes. Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April O'Neil (Megan Fox) and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick (Will Arnett) to save the city and unravel Shredder's diabolical plan.

TMNT hits theaters on August 8.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Tim's Review

Tim here, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is the best blockbuster movie I have seen so far this year! It currently ranks as the second best movie I've seen this year behind The Grand Budapest Hotel, which would have been fantastic in the stereoscopic 3D format. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has such a compelling story that is very well written and directed that it manages to transcend beyond the normal sci-fi summer blockbuster into a contemporary power struggle tale between two species and the factions within each.

In regards to the story, the writing, and character development it is not without some fault. There was a moment early on in the movie where the characters made a claim about how important it is for a certain character to come along with them into the ape territory to fix the dam to restore power to the human community. However after an incident he is sidelined without further explanation of how his expertise is missed when it comes to repairing the dam. Beyond that small plot hole I couldn't find any additional faults with the story. Although some of the main human characters lacked development the main ape characters made up for that. And the truth is the movie is more about the apes than the humans. However, it would have been nice to have equal attention given to both.

Within the apes' community there are three particular apes that had great development and were performed by the actors with great poise. In fact two of the ape performers were so mesmerizing in performance that their characters felt compellingly real. It was so easy to relate to both viewpoints and where each of those characters were coming from in terms of their motivations and intentions. Those two characters (and, the actors who played them) are Caesar (Andy Serkis) and Koba (Toby Kebbell) whose relationship is strongly built. Very early on it's displayed how they are close friends (loyal to each other) and rely on each other to lead the ape community. As the film progresses they represent two opposing sides within the ape community: peace and war.

Andy Serkis' performance as Caesar is magnificent and awe-inspiring! If Serkis does not get award nominations this award season it will be criminal. Through Serkis' performance the full weight that rests on Caesar's shoulders is so immediately conveyed. He's responsible for not only his family but, also, the entire ape community needs his leadership. Serkis conveys so many emotions visually in his performances, and succeeds on levels that are astounding, while the WETA Digital team that brought those emotions through the digital make did a fantastic job at making him believable.

The visual effects in this movie are remarkable; the best I've seen so far this year. The opening shot and closing shot of the movie, which have beautiful circularity, are wonderful examples of how far WETA has come. They focus on Caesar's eyes and use a zoom where beyond the close-up detail the audience witnesses the amazing level of artistry to create the skin and hair of the apes. The apes are shown in wet and rainy environments and it's amazing how realistic the hair reacts to that environmental element.

This is a movie that deserves to be seen in the 3D format!

Next the stereoscopic 3D in the movie was excellent. It was a very soft and subtle 3D, and it worked so well for the story. There were maybe a few places where I wished they had pushed it more, but overall it was really well thought out in its use. Props need to be given to 3ality Technica for their stereoscopic services on the film since it was their rigs that were used paired with the ARRI ALEXA. This is a movie that deserves to be seen in the 3D format! Michael Seresin's cinematography was absolutely beautiful and breathtaking. It felt very naturalistic, and his use of lighting was fantastic. He used the full latitude of light and as well used color, or lack of, to convey the emotional points of the story. It felt grim, and at the same time Edenesque.

The production design and art department did a fantastic job as well. They accomplished so much in building practical sets and environments for the actors to work in. As well they helped build a sense of realism with those aspects. One of the most impressive was the single abandoned gas station in the middle of a forest. The moment when the humans and apes manage to restore power and go to it is an astounding one. It was made all the more powerful due to the production design.

A movie isn't complete without the sound and score, and both were fantastic. The sounds of the ape world were very well designed. A lot was built around what was heard and not seen in the movie, and that couldn't have been accomplished without the astounding work of the sound team. One of my favorite shots in the film worked so well because of the sound. Completely the sound-scape was Michael Giacchino's score, which was hauntingly beautiful. It hit the soft moments, hit the fast paced action moments, and emotionally connected me to the world all that much more.

Director Matt Reeves deserves mad props for his excellent direction of this motion picture. Going back to the favorite shot I mentioned earlier: it was a long tracking shot similar to what Alfonso Cuarón did in Children of Men, however it's not quite as long. It follows Malcolm (Jason Clarke) in a building that is overrun by apes hunting down humans as he desperately looks for medicine. The choices Reeves made as a director were spot on in so many places. He brought so many talented people together to create a rich and engaging world set to a complex and emotional story and did a great job leading the charge.

I highly suggest you go out and see Dawn of the Planet of the Apes in 3D. Make sure to see it on the biggest possible screen. I promise you won't be disappointed.

#FourthOfApes Message From DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

Watch the Independence Day message from DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES - some new shots in this and all shown with the dramatic narration of a famous speech you will all recall.

Can't wait for this movie. Critics who have seen it are raving! Currently sitting at 94% fresh over at RottenTomatoes. Don't forget this is a native 3D production using the industry's best of the best technology, like 3D rigs from our friends over at 3ality Technica.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.

DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES opens on July 11.

THEORY: Is Gentleman Ghost A Villain In BATMAN V. SUPERMAN? Check The First Official Image Of Superman

Beware first glances! You may overlook something. Ok, it's Henry Cavill in his Superman outfit. So what? Well for starters, does that look like Metropolis to you? More like Gotham correct? Yes, it's the location that counts here and the image certainly does convey the dreariness of the city if it does indeed turn out to be Gotham.

Note the smoking chimneys on the left hand side of the photo. That looks like the industrial revolution to me - and interesting inclusion for the downtown skyline of Gotham. It almost looks out of place, time wise that is. If it is Gotham. Perhaps it's London in the 1800's? Let me explain...

Looking down to the small clue that was left in the image: "LF GHO..." - LF is the common abbreviation for "Looking For" and GHO could very well be the first three letters of GHOST - or better known to DC comic fans as "Gentleman Ghost" or Jim Craddock. Craddock was a robber who lived in England during 19th century. Eventually he becomes a phantom and must walk the earth until the spirit of his killer moves on to the next plane of existence. Unfortunately for him - that can't happen (you can read more via the link at the end of the post).

The point is - he is immortal and has battled both Batman and Superman at various times. In the DC comic universe, Ghost is a member of the Injustice Society. BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE may explore some of the origins story of Ghost - or at least set the stage somewhat. And I'm just saying, that looks like London at SOME point in history. Time and dimensions are not really a problem for Superman as most comic book aficionados know, so he could very well be standing in 1800's London.

Here are Ghost's powers and abilities (from wikipedia):
Originally, the Gentleman Ghost seemed to rely on devices to simulate a ghostly existence; the original 1940s stories left the question of his nature open to speculation. Later, however, he is retconned into a true ghost and his abilities altered to follow suit. As a ghost, Craddock has several abilities. He can become intangible and pass effortlessly through solid material. He can become completely invisible. In fact, the appearance of his head as a floating hat and monocle is actually him rendering his decayed face invisible. He has been shown as being able to teleport as short a distance as a few rooms or as far as across states. Gentleman Ghost can also summon spectral weapons including a cane that shoots spectral fire and flintlock pistols. When passing through Craddock's ghostly form, people will sometimes experience an intense feeling of cold. Since this does not happen every time, it would seem that he can control this effect. Craddock can apparently track psionic energy and travel across dimensions as he did when he followed an astral tether from the Wizard to Johnny Sorrow. On certain occasions most of the manifestations of his abilities like teleportation and phasing are accompanied by a purple glow of spectral energy or transparent mist (possibly courtesy of different pencilers). Around the time of his prophesied return to life, he gains the power to summon and control the spirits of the dead due to his mother's spirit spending centuries recruiting them to help her son. It is unknown if he can still call upon them.

The Gentleman Ghost is apparently unable to touch or be touched by virgins. This is confirmed by his inability to do harm to both Stargirl and Jakeem Thunder. However, he can pick up a real weapon and be able to hurt them, as when he brandished the Cosmic Rod.

As a supernatural being, Gentleman Ghost cannot be killed and is very hard to hurt. However, those with royal blood can physically harm him and, when unaware, energy hitting him causes pain.

In the episode "Dawn of The Deadman" of Batman: The Brave and The Bold animated series, it is shown that if he is hit with Nth metal, he will momentarily show his true form, reverting to a decayed version of himself with black suit and hat. As shown in the same episode, he can also be hurt by other ghosts, as Deadman is able to hit him. It is also shown that if he is out cold then he remains in his black form. Also, despite the fact that he is easily defeated by Batman during the early episodes, Gentleman Ghost later demonstrates that he is a skilled hand-to-hand/martial combatant, as shown for example when he simultaneously fights with Batman and Deadman. His heroic Earth-Three counterpart reverses his color scheme, appearing as a ghost with a black suit and hat and turning white when hit.

This actually makes sense to me as DC really has to play catch up very fast in order to not be overwhelmed by the coming onslaught of all that is Marvel. It would make sense to have a super villain of Ghost's caliber as he is somewhat analogous in some few ways to Marvel's Thanos.

And get this - Ghost could tie in a number of other very well known characters in Sherlock Holmes (no longer protected under copyright) and even lure Batman and Supe to London (as what occurred in Batman: The Brave and the Bold – The Videogame with Batman at least). Probably a bit too far down the rabbit hole, but interesting conjecture at this point.

I think there are some tantilizing clues in this first official photo that points to the Gentleman Ghost, Jim Craddock as a super villain in BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE and in fact sets up their nemesis group called the Injustice Society.

What do you think? Think I am on track or way off? Time will tell! :-)

BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE opens on May 6, 2016 starring Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg, Laurence Fishburne, Jason Momoa, Amy Adams, Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey, Scoot McNairy, Tao Okamoto, and Jeremy Irons.

Must Watch: Short Films Lay Groundwork For DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

Check these three HD shorts that nicely help set up DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. Love the innovation in this marketing! About 10 years have past since RISE so there is a need for something like this to help set the stage.

These are not movie clips but rather standalone shorts inspired and presented by the franchise. Here are titles of the shorts in chronological order:
- Spread of Simian Flu: Before the Dawn of the Apes (Year 1)
- Struggling to Survive: Before the Dawn of the Apes (Year 5)
- Story of the Gun: Before the Dawn of the Apes (Year 10)

I'd say it's a must watch. No spoilers. The actors are not involved with any of the other movies and some fairly good production value as well. The last short in particular is quite inventive.

DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES opens on July 11 in native 3D shot on 3ality Technica rigs. Thanks sigma66 for the heads up.

TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION Opens Tomorrow! $100M Opening Forecast!!

3D Rig Technician Celine Tricart

Looks like Michael Bay's TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION will be the first movie of the year to break the $100M opening barrier. Tracking is through the roof for the $165M budgeted movie and we all know Mark Wahlberg is solid in bringing in the numbers.

Note that the run time of the movie is nearly 3 hours which will limit screenings somewhat though AVATAR was also in the same ball park and that didn't seem to be affected ;-) Further, no other movies are opening this weekend.

We will definitely see the impact of the Chinese market with this release as it was a joint production, marketing will be strong, and Chinese actors and skylines are involved. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if the numbers from China rival or even surpass domestic. We'll have a better idea tomorrow night.

Speaking of domestic box office, TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION opens in 4200 theaters (353 in IMAX 3D) and is tracking on par or above CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER ($95M opening).

I'm leaving you with some images of 3ality Technica's native 3D camera rigs in action on the production - it doesn't get any better than this! Get ready for some Michael Bay explosions and Mark Walhberg expletives! :-)

TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION opens tomorrow!!

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes VFX Evolution + Clips

Tim here, and there's a nice little BTS video for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes that appeared on IGN the other day. I've included it below followed by two short clips of a scenes from the film. The BTS video shows the challenges that had to be overcome with the performance capture technology and how far it has come since the last Apes film. It's very impressive to witness this kind of technological evolution combined with today's advanced native 3D - provided by 3ality Technica.

The scene that follows was shown to those in attendence at CinemaCon, and it got the most visceral reaction. For me it instantly became a favorite scene. It completely solidifies how insanely awesome the movie will be. Great tension. Enjoy.

Another clip that was released:

We're very close to the release of the movie. It lands in theaters on July 11th.

The Next FRIDAY THE 13TH Will Be 3D!

Yes! Finally we will have a modern 3D FRIDAY THE 13TH and I can't wait to see big ol' Jason in three dimensions! The thing is, it really is no holds barred with horror in 3D. You can do anything you want and get away with it so I'm expecting some jarring moments of things flying out to hit the audience, but also scenes drawing us into the screen as well. Not headaches mind you - just awesome creative stuff. Hopefully it's all done in native 3D too - I'll update you on that when I can.

Apparently David Bruckner (VHS, THE SIGNAL) has been tapped to direct the movie - awaiting confirmation.

Of course there was a 3D release in the franchise back in the early '80's shot in the same format as JAWS 3D (Arrivision over/under - thanks for heads up Mike). Looking forward to seeing it made with modern tech!

FRIDAY THE 13TH 3D will slice into theaters November 13, 2015 - which, of course, is a Friday :-)

Rian Johnson Tapped for STAR WARS Sequels!

star wars episode viii director

Rian Johnson (left) on the set of Looper with Joseph Gordon-Levitt (right)

Tim here, and I've got the most exciting news of the week. This may be more exciting for me than most of you, but believe me when I say this news is really exhilarating. The news is that young writer and director Rian Johnson will be taking over the screenwriting and directing helm for  Star wars episode viii from JJ Abrams. Reports are also varied as to whether he's also tackling episode ix, but consistently reported is that he'll at the least be writing the treatment. If lucky he will also be writing and directing episode ix. Fingers crossed that he is the man behind the helm.

For those of you who don't know who Rian Johnson in then you're in for a treat. I was first introduced to his filmmaking brilliance in 2006 when I first saw the trailer for his indie directorial debut Brick, which I then later saw in theaters. Brick was a surprise hit at the Sundance Film Festival in 2005. There it nabbed a Special Jury Price for Johnson's "originality of vision" and then went on to win several Independent Spirit nominations. Brick was a very creative breakthrough film that set the film noir genre in a high school environment and starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He followed Brick with another indie film called The Brothers Bloom in 2008. He also directed episodes of Breaking Bad in the following years, including "Ozymandias," which is considered one of the best episodes of the series. And then, in 2012 he made his first foray into sci-fi with Looper, which starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis. Ram Bergman, who produced Brick and Looper, will produce with Johnson.

I hope that gives you an idea why this news is so exciting for me. Now, JJ Abrams is shooting  Star wars episode vii in 2D on 35mm with IMAX cameras, so whether Rian Johnson will continue that is debatable. Johnson is most comfortable with 35mm Film as he shot that format on all his previous films, and as well on Breaking Bad. So if he chooses to shoot natively in 3D it would be his first time and as well his first time working digitally. Thus it is hard to say whether this  Star wars Trilogy will be native at all over being converted.

I hope this news excites you. JJ Abrams  Star wars episode vii is slated for release on December 18, 2015. Rian Johnson's sequel is supposed to hit soon after. Rian Johnson shared this video clip from The Right Stuff to express how he feels:

Final Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Trailer

Hey everyone, Tim here, and I'm pleased to share the final trailer for The Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. This trailer includes a small bit of my favorite scene that was shown to us in full at CinemaCon. The movie looks incredible each and every time new footage is released - especially knowing it was shot on 3ality Technica 3D rigs. This trailer shows a bit more of the conflict and action between the ape community and surviving humans. The tensions are high in that clip Jim shared earlier this week, but the tensions seem to grow throughout the film until they reach the breaking point hinted at in this trailer.
Throughout the marketing campaign there has been photos and video showcasing the wonderful work of the actors behind the performance capture that helped bring the apes to life. With each image and video an immense amount of respect has been given to the artists who have worked so hard to bring the world to reality. It makes me very excited. I want to share the exclusive interview we got at MarketSaw with Andy Serkis during CinemaCon.
Here's the movie's storyline:
A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth's dominant species.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes hits theaters on July 11th. Don't forget to visit the Official Website.

Watch: First Clip From DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

Check out this clip from the actual movie DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES! Quite a bit of this clip has been seen in various other marketing releases like posters and trailers but not all in one rolling scene.

An important point raised in the clip's dialogue is the fact that many humans don't realize the apes are sentient. Apparently much has been held back from the human population and you can count on that single device as being an interesting channel of conflict - at least when the two factions first met up at least. Really looking forward to that.

Here's the movie's storyline:
A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.

DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES opens on July 11 in native 3D, shot on 3ality Technica rigs! Gotta love it.

New International Trailer For GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Next up on the marketing agenda for Marvel's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is this international trailer, full of more revealing interactions between the main characters. Love the comedic conflict - it just keeps getting better the more I see of it.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
An action-packed epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the universe. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is presented by Marvel Studios. The film releases August 1, 2014, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY opens on August 1.

Watch: What Happened After The First Movie And Before DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES?

Here's an interesting and needed trailer to help tie together the aftermath of RISE and the beginning of DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. The narration and visuals tell the story of what humans went through in those 10 years.

The more I see of marketing for the movie the more I have to see it the second it opens - on the largest 3D screen possible of course. Native 3D courtesy of 3ality Technica rigs and expertise!

Since 2011, the Simian Flu has swept across the world. Witness how things have changed for mankind since.

A decade has passed since apes and man have come face-to-face. Now the two societies face a difficult choice between working together to co-exist, or battle to become the dominant species.

DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES opens on July 11.

Sigourney Weaver Returning For More AVATAR Sequels - But NOT As Augustine!

I had anticipated a twist in how Sigourney Weaver would be brought back to life in the sequels - this is sci-fi after all, so why not a different character? It makes sense. Perhaps a part of Ewya (the Na'vi "God" of Pandora)? Perhaps representing Ewya? Hmmm.

The news is exciting as it kind of delineates official communication about the AVATAR sequels from Cameron and the studio. The statement was made by Cameron and 20th Century Fox Monday.

Anyway, here's what James Cameron had to say bringing this to light:
"Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made ‘Aliens. We’re good friends who’ve always worked well together, so it just feels right that she’s coming back for the Avatar sequels. Her character of Grace Augustine, as fans know, died in the first movie, so she’s playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films. We’re both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration."

Yes, Cameron said sequels - plural. Weaver will be playing this new character through at least 2 of the 3 upcoming movies it seems.

More info when I get it!

AVATAR 2, 3 and 4 are slate for release in December 2016, 2017 and 2018 respectively. For all of our AVATAR news, click here. Thanks Morka for the heads up :-)

Movie Review: EDGE OF TOMORROW - 9.1 Stars! No Spoilers

EDGE OF TOMORROW is an excellent movie and well worth seeing in 3D and especially IMAX 3D.  While it is my second highest rated review this year (CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER scored 9.2 stars), had director Doug Liman tackled a few things in a different way, EoT would have had my endorsement as the year best movie thus far.  But it certainly is in the same league as Cap.

Probably my largest complaint with the movie is the third act.  The first two acts had exceptional pacing and was just about perfectly edited - I'll talk about the finale later on in the review. Liman whisked us along with numerous "time loop gags" that worked very well for me - these are inventive and while the premise is reminiscent of GROUNDHOG DAY and BACK TO THE FUTURE, it is still it's own beast.  At no time was my suspension of disbelief blown by something reminding me of another movie.  So rest assured, the most important aspect of this movie - time loop - was done well.

I made the mistake of watching Tom Cruise on the late night talk show circuit and I came away with a very scripted and safe take of the actor.  It's getting worse.  A canned public persona.  Hated it.  I feel he's not capable of being himself in public.  I understand the microscope he is under and that many don't trust his instincts (probably including himself), but wow, I hated watching it.  I won't again.

Emily Blunt's publicity tour however was very upbeat, funny and great to watch. Well, at least up to the point where she starts to talk about Cruise and his quirks. Then it becomes quite awkward. Even the international premieres that opened in 3 cities all within 24 hours was Cruise's idea and while interesting, I don't believe it was worth keeping a mother from her child for that long. Blunt has just given birth. I'm sure that didn't go over very well with her and her family.

HOWEVER, Cruise's performance in EDGE OF TOMORROW is inspired!  He has come a long way as far as taking chances on screen.  In fact his best scenes in EoT are when his character is vulnerable.  Taking into account his performance in TROPIC THUNDER, Cruise is morphing into someone audiences can start to relate to, and not an actor who only plays characters that are safe and invincible.

Domestically EDGE OF TOMORROW is not performing as well as it should be. Cruise may have over extended his stay as a top tier actor in the minds of most - especially the younger crowd. In fact EoT ($29m) opened third behind a strong opening from THE FAULT IN OUR STARS ($48m) and Disney's strong hold over MALEFICENT ($34m). Internationally though, Cruise is still a behemoth of the box office taking in an astounding $82m this weekend bringing us to a total of $140m.

Half the movie's take has been in 3D thus far (47%) and while I thought the 3D was done well - there wasn't anything about the conversion that stood out for me. It was just there. It certainly helped with the immersion and suspension of disbelief - especially with the "Matrix sentinel" influenced aliens, but with the sci-fi genre (and horror for that matter), I like to have a few scenes dialed way up to amplify the anxiety. Other than my preference, there's nothing overly wrong with the 3D.

What shone for me was the story, suspension of disbelief and the visual effects / stunts. This, of course, is an awesome combination of superlatives to have for a sci-fi movie and thus a very nice score of 91 stars.

The weakest links in the movie I felt was the third act, directing and character development. Yes, Cruise character Major Cage goes through significant change but I felt as though there wasn't enough development for me to be invested in his character all that much. The final act lost the movie's outstanding pace and editing, plus I can think of many things that WOULD have worked much better than what finally made it to the screen. I haven't read the original source material (ALL YOU NEED IS KILL), but I bet you it's different in the finale somehow. If you know, please let me know.

So - well worth going to see! I recommend it and endorse the IMAX 3D version. It's a VERY close second to CAPTAIN AMERICA for this year's best movie, so go see it.

EDGE OF TOMORROW is now playing in 3D, IMAX 3D and flat.

James Gunn On 3D *AND* The New GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY TV Spot!

Gotta love how this movie is shaping up! Take a look at the new shots in this TV Spot (from the NBA Finals) and try not to let a little grin spread across your face. Loving this.

And hey, as an added bonus - director James Gunn spoke out on Facebook about 3D and IMAX 3D, have a read:

Says Gunn: "Just got out of working on the Guardians cut for IMAX 3D and I’m unbelievably excited about it. Guardians of the Galaxy has been planned as a 3D film from its very inception. Yes, if you see the film in 2D, you’ll get a full experience. But the 3D experience promises a little something extra. Unlike many directors, I’ve been actively involved with converting every shot to 3D, making sure it works perfectly for the story and the film, making sure it’s spectacular and immersive without being silly, distracting, or overly showy. 3D conversion was once far inferior to shooting in 3D, but over the past couple years new technology has allowed us incredible control over the 3D effects, making it equal to or in some cases greater than shooting in 3D.

As an EXTRA benefit for those who see the film in IMAX 3D, we will be changing aspect ratios throughout the film in a way that makes the experience even fuller and more encompassing. I’ve personally chosen all the places where the changes occur and, again, I love how it’s coming along. The changing aspect ratios in this case are actually a part of the storytelling.

Just wanted to share some of this stuff with you guys since I haven’t had a chance to talk about the 3D much. Hope you’re all having a great day. Hi!"

Now I am over the top! Sounds like he really put his time into making GOTG a 3D experience to remember - can't wait.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY opens on August 1.

Ben Foster To Play A Mage In Duncan Jones' WARCRAFT

Yes! Was hoping for this role for him in WARCRAFT. I have been amazed at Ben Foster's work since I saw him in 3:10 TO YUMA and I have yet to see him fail at a character. I was so happy to hear he was cast in Duncan Jones' WARCRAFT and it didn't really matter what role he was cast for - I knew he'd nail it. Foster as a Mage makes sense. Foster isn't a huge guy (so a tank is out really) but he does have a scowl that can easily be the perfect accoutrement to cast spells. :-)

Says Foster: "The character in Warcraft that I play is named Medivh. He’s a mage, which is essentially a sorcerer. He came up in a time protecting an area, and the way he protected this area was through magic. As peace returned to this land he took a break. He hung up his staff, so to speak, or let his guns get dusty. We meet him as his friends are returning asking for his help in a battle.

What's exciting about Duncan Jones' take on this video game is that it shows both sides of the war. It shows both sides of a conflict, which is exciting to me. It's not just a video game turned into a movie. It's asking, hopefully, an important question of, where do we limit our compassion for what we consider to be the bad guys?"

...And Foster had this little nugget:  "The way that they're pushing motion-capture -- I just saw some of the test footage -- it's unlike anything I've ever seen. It's performance-capture. It pushes it to the next level. It's going to be one helluva 3D event."

And one whether his role is a performance captured character:  "No, mine's not, but there are interactions with a lot of characters that are. There are a lot of different kinds of creatures in this picture that I interact with."

WARCRAFT logs into our world on March 11, 2016.

Second HERCULES Trailer - SPOILER!!

Yeah I have to shake my head at this one. Outside of being a pretty good indication that the movie seems to be an action juggernaut, there's a spoiler in this trailer that made me stop and wince. I thought there's no need to include that one line in this thing, but there it is.

I will tell you below this line in white text - just highlight the area if you want to read it.

**SPOILER BELOW**

The trailer invest significant time I believe to the development of the love interest of Hercules. She is shown many times and it seems to me to be a major part of the movie and to Hercules' character development. Later in the trailer the narrator states "Revenge your family" while showing a shot of the women and their children I am assuming. Also, the narrator says "The Gods that have killed your family". *SIGH* I hate that marketers these days think they can get away with things like that.

**SPOILER ABOVE**

Moving on, I enjoyed the rest of the trailer but I DO NOT recommend watching it if you want a pristine viewing experience going into the theater.

The practical effects look AMAZING in this movie, but I'm not convinced yet about the visual effects. Something about the multi-headed water beast (Hydra?) bothers me. The lines are TOO sharp to me. Motion blur seems lacking. Perhaps in 3D it will all work out - I'm hopeful.

Dwayne Johnson is Dwayne Johnson. Charismatic, owns the screen and instant audience interest in his well being. I really want this thing to work but I don't know how well they have delivered yet.

HERCULES opens on July 25 in 3D, IMAX 3D and flat. This is a 3D conversion.

James Cameron On The "Parallel Process" Of Writing Three Avatar Sequels Concurrently

So James Cameron had some interesting things to say at the LA Times Hero Complex Film Festival over the weekend and in particular about writing AVATAR 2, 3 and 4.

At this point we know about his writing team of Shane Salerno (AVATAR 4), Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa (Married and co-writers on AVATAR 3) and Josh Friedman (AVATAR 2), but we didn't know how it would all work. How do you bring together 5 writers (Cameron is obviously involved too) to get these productions done back to back to back?

Well as it turns out, I don't need to paraphrase what was said as Cameron can communicate very well - so here are his comments:

James Cameron: "We tried an experiment. We set ourselves a challenge of writing three films at the same time. I knew I could certainly write any one of them but to write three in some reasonable amount of time – we wanted to shoot them together so we couldn’t start one until all three scripts were done and approved. So I knew I was going to have to ‘parallel process’ which meant I would have to work with other writers. And the best experience I had working with other writers was in television when I did Dark Angel. The television room is a highly collaborative and fun experience. So we put together a team, three teams actually — one for each script. The teams consist of me and another writer on each one of those three films. Each [individual writer] would have their own script that they’re responsible for. But what we did that was unique beforehand was we sat in a writing room for five-months eight-hours-a-day and we worked out every beat of the story across all three films so it all connects as one three film saga. I didn’t tell [the three writers] which sequel was going to be theirs to write until the very last day. So everybody was equally invested story-wise in all three films. So the guy that got the third movie, which is the middle film of this new trilogy, he now knows what preceded and what follows out of what he’s writing at any given moment. We all consider that to be a really exciting, creative and groundbreaking experiment in screenwriting. It worked as a process to get our minds around this epic and all these new creatures and environments and characters."

Love how he did not disclose who would be writing what early on! That would cultivate the best ideas from all of them during the massive group sessions so that they can be spread out equally and thoughtfully throughout the timeline. It would also lead to cohesiveness of the storyline too - you don't want abrupt changes from one movie to the next. I'm thrilled to hear how this was done!

AVATAR 2 is slated for a December 2016 release with AVATAR 3 and 4 due out in 2017 and 2018.

James Cameron Teaming Up With Cirque du Soleil For A Live AVATAR Show

In a move that doesn't surprise me whatsoever, James Cameron is teaming up with Montreal's Cirque du Soleil to create a live show for the massive theatrical hit AVATAR. Cameron has openly admired Cirque's work and his company Cameron Pace Group shot the native 3D movie CIRQUE DU SOLEIL: WORLDS AWAY that was released in 2012.

The show will open in late 2015 with 20th Century Fox and the Cameron / Jon Landau production shingle Lightstorm Entertainment signed up as partners, stated Daniel Lamarre, President and CEO of Cirque.

Says Lamarre: “Our relationship with Jim Cameron began with my visit at his ‘Avatar’ cutting room.  I am thrilled that almost 5 years later, Cirque du Soleil will be able to explore the very inspirational AVATAR realm for the live stage. This will mark our second creative project with Jim and I believe it will be as stimulating for both our creative forces.”

Says Cameron: "Over the years, I have discovered the extraordinary talents and imaginations of both the artists and the creative forces behind Cirque du Soleil. I know we share the common goal of bringing audiences to another level of entertainment experiences. I look forward to doing just that on this project."

I'm sure this show will be stunning. Add this to the growing list of extra-theatrical entertainment venues that the AVATAR universe will inhabit. A list that also includes a series of four books and Avatar Land within Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom park.

Movie Review: X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST - 9 Stars - No Spoilers - Amazing 3D!

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST has the best 3D I have seen other than THE HOBBIT movies, GRAVITY and HUGO! Truly an achievement.

If you are an aficionado of 3D then go see this movie (on the largest screen possible) for the stereo alone! Of course the movie is worth while seeing for all it's other components but the 3D really stood out for me.

The team of John Harper (Lead Stereographer), Brent Robinson (Stereographer - Second Unit / UW Camera Operator), Ben Gervais (3D Production Systems Supervisor), Brian Cassar (Stereo Rig Technician) and Jeff Amaral (Stereographer, Splinter Unit) nailed it! They were using 3ality Technica rigs for the production which I continue to hear absolutely wonderful things about from the actual crews that use them. A great group of stereo professionals!

Harper called them "a Dream Team of true believers." and I heartily concur. I have met most of these guys and they are consummate pros - passionately involved in blending their creative eye with today's leading technology advancements.

I don't know what small portions were converted but Stereo D was involved to a degree with some shots - probably the tight space scenes or post production touch ups based on the director's eye or studio influence. Not sure, will find out. This is usual for most tentpole native 3D productions.

What 3D did I love? Well if you watched the trailers there is one scene where Quicksilver is running around a room doing Quicksilvery things and that shot is staggeringly well done! It made the movie for me. Icing on the cake. Robinson was particularly proud of this scene and said "The Quicksilver 3D was probably the coolest thing I've done." I also really enjoyed the inside of a 'control room' that features a prominent TV show from the late 1960's and the curvature of the shot was very well done. Further there is a scene where outside light is being shone through a window down over a character and on to a chess board. Really beautiful.

The cast of course is another dream team. How can you go wrong? I felt the story was lacking in a few areas but the pacing was incredible and it kept you on the edge of your seat throughout. Character Development rated my lowest and understandably so - with so many characters it's hard to go into any depth of where they came from, but at this point there is solid understanding of many of these franchise centerpieces - Wolverine in particular. I appreciated the screen time and further exploration of Ellen Page's Kitty Pryde. She really is VERY important to this plot.

I would have liked to see more detailed effects development for the sentinels. I know that's a personal thing and what they have in the movie is fine, but with the abilities that they have I felt something was missing. Something more sinister. That's my opinion.

Overall, if you want a movie that is WELL WORTH YOUR MONEY, then X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is it. They spent $200 million on this thing and it shows. Believe me when I tell you - go see it. It's all up on the screen and more.

I'll discuss more in the comments without anything held back regarding spoilers. Feel free to speak your mind!

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is now playing!

Must Watch: Clips And BTS From EDGE OF TOMORROW

Ok - first things first. I saw the trailer for EDGE OF TOMORROW in IMAX 3D and it sucked. Instant headache. I am REALLY hoping that this isn't the case for the whole movie - that this was just a rush job to get the trailer out on time. Or, that it was a theatrical projection error. Because the more I see of this movie the more I really want to love it.

Check the movie clips (visual and some minor plot and character relationship spoilers) and the Behind The Scenes (BTS) clips (visual spoilers) to see what I mean. First of all, I like Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt in general but I am really impressed with the level of practical effects being employed along with visual effects! I think this will translate to a believable experience. Yet another reason why I hope they didn't blow the 3D conversion.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
The epic action of “Edge of Tomorrow” unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Major William Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

EDGE OF TOMORROW opens on June 6 in 3D, IMAX 3D and flat. Here's hoping for a good conversion.

MUST WATCH: New Performance Capture BTS Clip From DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES!

Wow - I love this! Take a look at how far technology has come - even since AVATAR - when it comes to the performance capture of actor's facial expressions. This Behind The Scenes (BTS) clip features a split screen approach to showing the on set action and what the end result is after digital post production.

Of course this whole movement has been spearheaded by a very capable actor (Andy Serkis) AND the artists behind the creation of these performances.

The digital work that's being done is of course married up with the industry leading native 3D produced from 3ality Technica's native 3D rigs. Man - can't wait to see all the technical execution done on this movie! I think I'll have to see it twice within a weekend; once with my Apes fanboy cap on and once from a purely technical view.

Anyway - please enjoy the work in this clip. I've watched it several times now and will continue to do ad nauseam - I like it that much.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth's dominant species.

DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES opens on July 11.

Watch: Two New TV Spots For TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION!

Some new shots in these two new TV spots for TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION so have a look! Kelsey Grammar makes an appearance as well.

Man these trailers and TV spots take me back to riding the 3D Transformers ride at Universal Studios - nothing like it; highly recommended.

TAOE features native 3D of course, shot on 3ality Technica's TS-5 3D rig outfitted with their awesome SIP (Stereo Image Processor) which makes shooting in native 3D a perfect pleasure, right out of the camera.

Here's the movie's storyline:

TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION is the fourth film in director Michael Bay’s global blockbuster franchise. The film begins after an epic battle that left a great city torn, but with the world saved. As humanity picks up the pieces, a shadowy group reveals itself in an attempt to control the direction of history… while an ancient, powerful new menace sets Earth in its crosshairs. With help from a new cast of humans, Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen) and the Autobots rise to meet their most fearsome challenge yet. In an incredible adventure, they are swept up in a war of good and evil, ultimately leading to a climactic battle across the world.

TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION opens on June 27.
