SEE: New Crabsuit Vehicle from James Cameron's AVATAR Sequels!

James Cameron's AVATAR sequels are well underway again thanks to New Zealand's control of the coronavirus outbreak. Further evidence of the production moving along is the recent release of these concept art images from producer Jon Landau revealing the new Crabsuit vehicles for underwater duties.

The Crabsuits are "human driven multifunction submersibles" and are one of the assortment of new vehicles from RDA (Resources Development Administration). RDA is the "largest single non-governmental organization in human space. Its power is such that it outmatches most of Earth governments in wealth, political influence, and military capability."

If there was any doubt that the AVATAR sequels will have a large underwater component, consider it now quashed.

Note the large lettering on the arm of the Crabsuit, "CET-OPS", likely Cetaceous Operations, though cetaceous refers to Earthbound mammals of the order Cetacea (ex. whales).

Of course, you can expect a multitude of these Crabsuits being deployed undersea on Pandora (and/or other worlds), most likely from the "Sea Dragon" (also pictured), a "massive mothership that carries an array of other sea-going craft in the sequels."

In what state theatrical release be living in on December 16, 2022, no one knows. Hopefully, we will be well on our way to full recovery, post Covid-19. We can all use something to look forward to and the AVATAR sequels definitely fill the bill!

**UPDATED - SDCC 2014: Marvel Unveils New Concept Art For AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

Marvel loves the San Diego Comic-Con and has unveiled four new pieces of concept art for AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON featuring Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Black Widow and Iron Man battling the Ultron robot army which is probably part of a larger banner - note portions of Hulk's hand and Thor's Mjolnir in Black Widow's poster. If we get more images soon - I'll update this post.

Looks like the Avengers definitely have their hands full.

Is This The Quinjet From Marvel's THE AVENGERS?

We have a look at some possible concept art for The Quinjet from THE AVENGERS. Not all the superheroes can fly hence the need for some mode of VERY FAST transportation.

Enter the Quinjet. Note the turbines in the wings themselves meant for vertical take off as well as what appears to be some pretty mean thrust capacity!

What I really want to see on this beast are the weapons of choice! What have they included?

Concept Art For The Lizard From THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN??

Hmmm. Looks like the real deal! Ever since I successfully called (through great sources) the villain for Sony's reboot of Peter Parker's franchise (Raimi was still somewhat attached at that time), I have been dreaming about how they would creatively tackle the iconic villain The Lizard.

Director Marc Webb has the honor. The awesome cast for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN consists of Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, C. Thomas Howell, Martin Sheen, Sally Field and, of course, Stan Lee.

Out of all the evil-doers Spider-man has encountered over his illustrious career, I have to say The Lizard is the number two character that invokes in my mind, behind only the Green Goblin. Sorry all you Doc Ock fans, he's relegated to third for me. The Lizard (Dr. Curt Connors) had a very appealing bit of character development that I found interesting as a boy growing up.

Rhys Ifans is playing The Lizard / Dr. Connors in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. Dylan Baker played Connors in Raimi's franchise but did not get to the point where he changed into the beast. I'm curious as to whether Connors will be a physicist (as in Raimi's universe) or a biologist as he was depicted in the comics and TV series. I'm a traditionalist mostly - I want the biologist!

What I also thought was cool from the comics was that Connors/The Lizard was in the X-MEN universe too! Could it be that we will see a cameo appearance from the mutants? Probably not as Marvel does not control that license, but one can always hope. I am fairly certain that The Lizard will meet (contribute to) his demise because of his reptilian weakness to cold as he is cold blooded. Just a hunch :-)

Another selfish desire I have for the movie is that they capture the magic of the original score from the TV series (Ray Ellis) in the movie somehow. To this day that score haunts me and I often have it churning away in my mind even though I haven't heard it in years. I am not talking the opening and closing themes (which shouldn't be copied), but the score within the TV show itself. I loved Danny Elfman's work in Raimi's SPIDER-MAN for the record. Anyway, enjoy the artwork and hopefully this is authentic, because I like it. Our spidey-sense starts tingling July 3.

Nice! We are lucky enough to be getting some nice preview material (teaser poster) for Disney's JOHN CARTER despite the release date of March 9, 2012.

Geoff Boucher interviewed director Andrew Stanton and he was quite informative about some of his influences for the project:

Said Stanton: "Yeah, I looked at things like “Apocaplyto” and “Rome” and even things like “Shogun” and “Lawrence of Arabia,” things that as a viewer I could accept as having a level of historical research. They give me a sense of what it would be like in that land and in that age. So then you ask, “Well, what if we just did our Martian research really, really well and treated it as a period film. There are so many times and places in history in our world that I just don’t know anything about, and when I learn about them they’re always fascinating. I don’t need a predisposed interest in them if they are presented well. So we said, “We’ll treat it this way, we won’t treat it like some fantasy being fulfilled by a fan.” We tried to make it feel like we’re going with the story of what really happened. This is how it was, this is how those cultures really existed. That was one of the many levels, for instance, that I enjoyed “The Lord of the Rings” on. One of the similarities between Tolkien and Burroughs is that they came across to the reader as if they had done so much travel research; they seemed like they had gone to these places and documented the flora and the fauna and the architecture and the culture and the rules. They did it in ways that someone who visited those places would have done it. That made it much easier to treat the film as history in a weird way because I had this encyclopedia of all the aspects of Mars."

Stanton continued: "I kept using the word “authentic” when I was out on set or doing art in development. I just wanted things to look like they had been through weather and use. I wanted things to look beat-up and old. This may sound weird, but I was always so impressed by the Monty Python films and Terry Gilliam’s sense of production value. Things really felt like they had been through the mud. And if you look at most historical films, for a little too long they always gave us things that looked a little too clean. People on my set could not distress things enough for me. Everything was pre-industrial; I wanted it to look made by hand. I wanted the pre-revolution days of Mars to look like tall ships on the skyline. And to get that to come across through the lens and then up on the screen, you just couldn’t beat stuff up enough. I remember once we had this great big deck gun and my weapons guy made this beautiful object. In his mind it looks weathered but I stepped back about 20 feet and said from here it looks brand new. I told him he should go take an ax to it and get it some really big nicks to it. He said, “You’re kidding me?” But he did it, he took the ax to it, he wouldn’t let anybody else do it to his baby. But that’s how we wanted everything, dirty, used, distressed and, hopefully, historical."

So yeah, I am amped even further now. I think Stanton (WALL-E, FINDING NEMO) has the creative chops to get this thing done and with Disney's resources it should be a home run. More when I get it!

New Photos And Art: DRIVE ANGRY!!

I have been pleasantly surprised by how DRIVE ANGRY is turning out! When I heard it was a supernatural thriller and that Nicolas Cage would be in it I knew something would be up, but to be honest I didn't think it would this enticing.

It helps to have two great guys writing too. Todd Farmer and Patrick Lussier have worked together before (MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3-D) and are capable of great things, especially in 3D.

First lets take a look at Nicolas Cage as Milton, who as we now know (read below) busts out of hell itself to try to save his grand daughter's life. Cage looks darn good for this role; I hope he knocks it out of the park.

Here is the DRIVE ANGRY storyline:

In the newest 3D action-adventure from the director of MY BLOODY VALENTINE, DRIVE ANGRY stars Nicolas Cage as Milton, a hardened felon who has broken out of hell for one last chance at redemption. Intent on stopping a vicious cult who murdered his daughter, he has three days to stop them before they sacrifice her baby beneath a full moon.

He's joined by Piper (Amber Heard) – a young, sexy waitress who liberates her ex-boyfriend's cherry-red muscle car in order to help Milton. Now, the two of them are hot on the trail of the deadly leader of the cult, Jonah King (Billy Burke), who believes it is his destiny to use the baby to unleash hell on earth.

But the bloodthirsty cult is the least of Milton's problems. The police are after him too. And worse, an enigmatic killer known only as "The Accountant" (2nd Photo) – who has been sent by the Devil to retrieve Milton and deliver him back to hell. With wicked cunning and hypnotic savagery, the Accountant will relentlessly pursue Milton at high speed across the country until his mission is accomplished.

Fueled by high octane and pure rage, Milton must use his anger to go beyond all human limits to avenge his daughter’s murder, before his last chance at redemption is revoked.

Finally, let's take a look at some concept art from Summit Entertainment for the movie. They certainly gives you a feeling of despair and desperation doesn't it?

I wonder if that is Milton's daughter or granddaughter under that tree?

DRIVE ANGRY is slated for a February 11, 2011 release and has some pretty nice spacing between other 3D movies at that time - THE GREEN HORNET launches January 14 and James Cameron's SANCTUM dives in on March 4. The number of 3D screens is not as much of an issue as it used to be, but it is good to see that spacing for this project as it should benefit all involved.

Looks like a classic bridge jump scene too and the cars look decidedly older don't they? Should be cool to hear the old big block, 4 barrel V-8s kicking in.

I discovered a shot of Patrick Lussier (Director) and Steve Danton (Assistant Director) on Todd Farmer's blog and noted that the bridge they are on could very well be the jump scene bridge from the concept art. Looks quite cold at that location too.

Next up for Lussier is HALLOWEEN III (again Todd Farmer is writing) with a October 31, 2011 release. Busy guys!! Farmer is also working on a project I am really looking forward to - my buddy Thomas Janes' DEVIL'S COMMANDOS. More on that one soon. I have got a great feeling about it.

If you will note in the last image of what seems like hell or hell on earth, there is a car entering the shot from above with headlights blazing! Looks to be aimed at that same tree too.

I hope the money is spent on the right special effects too - nobody needs to see a cheesy hell. Am I right? The images look good though. And I expect great things from the Lussier/Farmer team.

Marvel Concept Art: THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA!

Marvel has released two new pieces of concept art (via Yahoo!) for the upcoming 2011 movies THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER.

The nature of a champion is quite evident in both of them, but under completely different circumstances.

Ryan Meinerding created the CAPTAIN AMERICA piece and it truly resembles what a hero would look like during a conventional war in the 20th Century.

On the other hand, Charlie Wren's work shows THOR seemingly battling on another plane of existence or even on the side of an active volcano!

Marvel will ultimately attempt to rein in both of these heroes as well as IRON MAN and THE HULK for their AVENGERS movie. If they can pull this off, AVENGERS will be the must see comic adaption of the decade if you ask me.

Is This The First Look At Ridley Scott's 3D Epic THE FOREVER WAR??

Jim here. This is potentially very exciting or very lame. Either way it is a nice piece of artwork I guess.

Quiet Earth claims they have some artwork from Steve Simmons (Artist on TIMELESS) that belongs to Ridley Scott's THE FOREVER WAR.

If you are unacquainted, here is the synopsis of Scott's planned stereoscopic 3D Sci-Fi epic: An elite task force returns home after a brief interstellar military operation, but discovers that 20 years have past and the planet they once knew is completely different. Based on Joe Haldeman's 1974 novel "The Forever War".

I would take a substantial grain of salt with this one for now as much as I would like to believe it. I will keep you updated!

New Concept Art: Pixar's CARS 2

Jim here. We have what seems to be an artistic story panel for the upcoming stereoscopic 3D Disney/Pixar CARS 2. It was obtained through Disney's Annual Report and via PixarPlanet.

That is Japan's Mt. Fuji in the background (Click to enlarge). They are obviously introducing a new Formula 1 character pictured racing behind Lightning McQueen - speed should definitely be a factor! :-)

The storyline goes like this (WARNING - SOME SPOILERS!):
Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson), his pit team and new pit boss Mater head around the world for the Race of Champions, to take place in five different countries and involve the champions of different disciplines like Formula One and rally driving. First up is a race in Tokyo, starting at Mount Fuji and heading downtown; then there's a German race through the Black Forest; then "Porto Corsa" in Italy, which is based partly on the Monte Carlo Grand Prix; then a 24-hour race around Paris (so somewhat like Le Mans then) and finally a thrilling climax in London, approaching Buckingham Palace (where the guards appear to be Land Rovers).

But all this racing is not the only focus. Mater, who we know from the series of cartoon shorts Mater's Tall Tales (more on that in our blog in a minute) is prone to exaggeration, gets involved in a "Hitchcockian" case of mistaken identity, saves the life of a British secret agent called Finn McMissile (who looks a heck of a lot like an Aston Martin) and becomes embroiled in a huge spy thriller. Only no-one believes him. That too comes to a head at Buckingham Palace.

Along the way there are towtruck-abroad pictures to be taken at the Oktoberfest in Germany (where Mater wears "Materhosen") and harassing the aforementioned Palace Guards.

Brad Lewis (the Producer of Ratatouille - my fav Pixar movie!) is directing and the movie is slated for release June 24th, 2011. I have a great feeling about this one!!

First Look At AVATAR's Unobtainium And Further Concept Artwork

Jim here. And the hits just keep on coming from AVTR.com - AVATAR's viral website. Looks like we have our first glimpse of unobtainium from Pandora - and through its magnetic field and superconductivity, it levitates.

I love the presentation of this! Asks a whole lot of questions in my mind that I hope are answered in AVATAR - guess that's the whole point of a teaser photo isn't it?

This is the mineral that humans are so desperate for - that they would come all the way out to Pandora, mix it up with the flora and fauna just to mine it.

Next up is some concept art found below - the first shot is of Hells Gate and a fleet of Scorpion aircraft. The second is of and RDA hydro electric generating station on Pandora. Be sure to check out the rest of them on AVTR.com! Click to zoom in.

The thought that went into a simple shot like the unobtainium above sets the bar even higher for me if that is possible. Sure I expect revolutionary 3D and effects from AVATAR - but now I am seeing the artistry and use of color too. I am spellbound by it. Sure I have had an interest in geology since I was a kid, combing my grandparent's rocky beach - picking out amethyst and agate among the ancient fossils that dwell along the Bay of Fundy. That, along with my mother being an artist and my intense interest in film making - I can really appreciate the work that went into this simple, but gorgeous shot. Well done guys! Oh and thanks to A@ronW for keeping a vigilant eye on AVTR.com.

Want To See What The Whole Power Suit Might Look Like? New Official AVATAR Concept Art! Aircraft! WARNING: SPOILERS!!

**SAME DAY UPDATE: Have heard from @mordecaidesign (Twitter) and Tom Powell (see comments) that they are sure that the first image is from Dylan Cole. Appears they are both correct. There is conjecture that the second one is by James Clyne Ryan Church. Looking for confirmation.

Jim here. Another breaking AVATAR story from the best place to be for all things James Cameron.

**SPOILER ALERT** - If you want a pristine viewing experience of AVATAR, it is best to stop reading NOW.

One of my readers (Thanks G.L.!) just sent these huge pieces of AVATAR material to my attention and due to the sensitive nature of the content I made sure it was ok with Fox before releasing it - it is THAT good!

This is official, concept art from the forthcoming book The Art of Avatar: James Cameron's Epic Adventure (which I have on preorder) which has 100 120 full color concept images in it as well as interviews! Better get your hands on this AVATAR book and others!

Fox says run with it - it got approved through the right channels soooooo... take a good look at the whole darn Power Suit!! Please keep in mind that these photos are concept only and may not make it totally into the final AVATAR movie but you can clearly see how my Power Suit's photo fits into the concept drawing! Right down to the ammunition hanging down on the unit's side.

And a stunning new look at AVATAR's futuristic helicopters! WHOA. What do you make of those? For those of you who have read more about AVATAR, this is probably not a AEROSPATIALE SA-2 SAMSON as they only are armed with a door gun and are mainly used for operational movement on Pandora. However if you look in the background of the Power Suit, it looks like the downed aircraft behind it is a Samson! The second photo clearly shows much more heavy weaponry - missiles for example. So it could very well be an AH-19 SCORPION gunship or a C-21 DRAGON gunship which are over 100 feet long and looks like a "giant predatory insect, with multiple canopies at the front for pilots and gunners." (quote from original scriptment). Further the names may have very well changed from the scriptment, but you get the idea.

And ummm... is that a BANSHEERAY chasing the Gunship? Or a LEONOPTERYX? With someone riding it?? :-) I believe this concept art may be more driven by the mechanical design of the machinery than the creature design that Neville Page (who is also designing the prehistoric piranha's in Alexandre Aja's PIRANHA 3-D!) and others has worked on, so it is hard to say if the Leonopteryx (If that is what it is) will wind up looking like this or not. We do know that they can be ridden from the scriptment. But - DAMN - awesome creatures! We also know that originally the Leonopteryx (several times larger than a Bansheeray) does attack Samsons as they think they are enemies. Can't say more as it may have not even made it into the final movie, but let's just say these scenes are going to blow our minds!

This movie is going to kick some serious butt guys. What we have here is typical, knock your socks off James Cameron designs woven into a precise storyline.

So thus begins the ramp up to the release of AVATAR! It has been a long time coming, but let's start right here! I will get confirmation on exactly what that aircraft is shortly from my sources - stay tuned for updates! And as always, keep it on MarketSaw for the latest and greatest breaking 3D news.

Concept Art: "Disney's A Christmas Carol" & Spoilers

Jim here. Collider got their hands on some scans of DISNEY'S A CHRISTMAS CAROL concept art and it is right along the lines of what I have already posted here and here from the actual movie poster and stills.

I will reiterate that Disney is keeping the imagery to be very Dickens indeed and old London looks stunning and inviting (at least the shots I have seen). Insert Robert Zemeckis' wonderful performance capture prowess and you have what should be an instant Christmas classic to be watched on future Christmas Eves on your 3D Home Entertainment system... of course!

How far can Zemeckis take us down this journey? All the world is a canvas with motion capture so it is really only limited by his imagination - and one would imagine that Jim Carrey is ready and willing to fulfill any wish that he might have in this pic.

I am reprinting some of the spoiler info that was originally posted here back in March 2008 as I thought there is some very interesting items in it in light of the poster and stills we have seen:

OVERALL COMMENTS:
- A Christmas Carol is full of Jim Carrey humor: Lots of yelling, screaming and facial expressions.
- He plays 4 characters at least - Scrooge and the ghosts. This is not new info of course, but confirmed.
- Michael J. Fox is DEFINITELY in the movie (IMDB shows it as a rumor). He has plenty of lines that are pure Fox humor - always down on himself, and very SARCASTIC. My source did not pass on what role he is playing however, although IMDB has him as Tiny Tim.
- There is a "Beggar" character that is constantly piping up with witty one liners throughout the movie. He will be seen carrying a cup.

JIM CARREY RELATED:
- There is a scene where ALL THREE of Carrey's ghost interact. They don't speak English either exactly - they speak with thick accents and the words don't sound right. There are actually spaces -or gaps of silence - between their words. Weird! Sounds awesome, but very odd. Right up Carrey's alley to be sure!
- Jim Carrey does A LOT of improvisation here. This is to be expected, but now it has been confirmed by a source. Apparently this improvisation has been a part of the movie since it was written! This openness to creativity has all been approved and made to happen by Zemeckis. Good on you Bob! They have a lot of confidence in Carrey and justifiably so. The guy cracks me up - always has.

SANTA CLAUS RELATED:
- YEP! THE BIG GUY IS IN IT. Remember little Sammi Hanratty letting this slip? Well it has been confirmed by my source.
- Santa wears - get this - a red and PURPLE Santa suit!
- My source heard John Goodman could be the actor in this role but he was NOT sure, so do not count on this. Only count on seeing Santa Claus in it.
- You can expect the REINDEERS to talk! Yep. Apparently Rudolph doesn't like Blitzen and they all have very unique voices.
- Santa and the reindeer don't have a very big impact on the film as far as storyline goes, but you can expect this part to be HILARIOUS. It's more like a cameo appearance :-)
- Apparently Santa is thinner in this movie than others.
- Sammi Hanratty is the character that interacts with Santa and the reindeer. I suspect it is her catching him performing his "Christmasly duties".

So, yeah - I am pretty hyped about this movie; that's why it is number 3 on my list of the Top Ten Most Anticipated 3D Movies of 2009. Stay tuned for more when I get it! :-)

Jonay Bacallado And The "Avatar" Concept Art

**SAME DAY UPDATE: Just got another email from Jonay - he states: "The images were created before anyone at costume department was hired... These pics were my passport, just to prove I could handle the job, they gave me freedom to create".

You now understand my motivation and how these images first appeared. BAH.

You may have recently seen posts related to concept art from Jonay Bacallado - I have received a couple of emails from this guy and here is his last one:

"I'm Jonay Bacallado, the author of the images. They are part of my artwork, my personal artwork, and it has nothing to do with the actual concept art of the film. The interview will be removed from www.plansiete.com as well, I've spoken about his incident with responsibles of the program, becuase information it's not accurate, and things can be misunderstood. Please, I have to ask you to remove this information, because the images shown are part of my own portfolio, no one has asked for authorisation, and of course,and most importantly, those designs have nothing to do with the real concepts and designs. I spoke during the interview about my experience, images were taken from my website, and they asume they are real concept art, but is not. Just to emphasise what I'm trying to explain mention that the design of characters have been done by another team, and we only get invlolved in costume, and as I said before, Avatar is far from this personal creation of mine included in my portfolio. This would get me into trouble, and without a reason, because this is NOT AVATAR CONCEPT ART. So please, people who follows Avatar news deserve to know that this concepts are FAKES, they are my creation, but have nothing to do with the work done in pre-production. Thank you, Jonay Bacallado."

Here are my comments: Firstly, from my point of view the video (Spanish?) showed Jonay being interviewed on television with supposed authorized images of his work as a concept artist. I mean, what network doesn't get permission before showing an interview? Isn't that part of the due diligence of a television network? It was from this video that the original images were screen captured (by myself and apparently IO9) and this whole commotion started. One would assume that an NDA expired or he has permission from Fox.

Secondly, he is clearly listed as an Illustrator and Costume Designer for AVATAR on his IMDB resume page. Clearly he had access or even designed for the movie so why would these images not be real or at least heavily influenced by them? They would be.

Thirdly, the images did not have any text on them saying that they are fake, representations, fanart, or anything of the sort. To the contrary, they had text on them saying "First Concept", etc. Hardly the terms used for fanart by someone actually working on the movie.

Lastly, I am at a loss as to why someone who worked on AVATAR with obvious access to the creatures therein, took it upon himself to create creatures that in no way represent anything to do with AVATAR, yet are clearly from AVATAR.

I think the situation stinks quite frankly. I think Fox forced him to contact everyone under threat of a lawsuit to state that they are fake. In my opinion, they are not fake, but early representations of the Na'vi. I will stand by that statement too. Sure the final creatures in AVATAR may look slightly different - heck maybe quite a bit different given that huge sinister behemoth discovered in our exclusive AVATAR set photo - but the point is they started out looking like what we had the opportunity to look at.

Frustrated? You bet. Disappointed that Fox can't get their act together to appease their would be audience with at least teasers - so that young aspiring illustrators and designers don't have to worry as much about making a mistake and get sued? You bet. Your target market is hungry for material - it's time. Really.

So we are back to hoping that their is teaser material at the 3D Entertainment Summit in LA in early December and/or in front of DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL. Great.

Alex Aja's "Piranha 3D": Concept Art|

Yeah - what is this immaculate conception week? Yet another piece of concept art today, this time officially through The Weinstein Co. and Alexandre Aja for their 3D horror film PIRANHA 3D. The wonderful guys over at ShockTilYouDrop picked up this story.

Here is the movie's synopsis:

"What do they really eat?"

"You mean besides flesh and blood?"

A new type of terror is about to be cut lose on beautiful Lake Victoria. After a sudden underwater terror sets free scores of prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers, including hot local cop Julie Forester, must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area's new razor-toothed residents. But out heroine is seriously outnumbered, and with only one chance to save the lake and her family from totally being devoured, she must risk everything to destroy the aquatic carnivores herself.

Did I just read "hot local cop" just now? Just who are they targetting for this movie's demographic anyway? Well the concept art looks sufficiently fierce and if you multiple that fish by oh 100,000 then you get the real meaning behind this pic. Don't forget Aja's pledge of a brutal blood bath - if anyone is capable of delivering on that pledge - it's Aja.
