Fright Night 3D Review (Some Spoilers)

Tim here. First let me start by saying that it’s been years since I saw the original Fright Night from the 1980’s. That being said I was greatly pleased that the filmmaker’s accomplished a lot in their remake, and kept the humor, suspense, and fun of the 1985 version. It was a greatly enjoyable movie with smart writing and good performances all around from Anton Yelchin, David Tennant, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Colin Farrell was an interesting choice and I think that he packed his charm into the performance well, and the sinister nature of his being shown through at the right moments. David Tennant was fantastic (but I’m a Doctor Who fan so that might help). However he was able to steal the show whenever he was on screen.

The directing and pacing was fantastic in this version, and with the stereo cinematography done by Max Penner of Paradise FX this movie was an improvement upon the original. There were some issues with the movie taking place at night most of the movie as at times you lost stereo depth in continually mute blue tones, but I think they managed to light it well enough for the shooting that the depth was still there, just toned down enough to work. And there were some fantastic shots in 3D throughout the movie. This is why I’m a strong believer in shooting natively because it looks better. My favorite shot made me wish Children of Men was shot in stereo because the shot was very similar to that long shot inside the car. The difference is that this time the characters are being pursued on the desert road at night by a vampire. Here’s where I’d like to point out that despite the night-time setting, and the constant blue tones in the lighting, that the depth actually worked well. The car’s tight environment, added with the camera’s constant movement to show the action inside and outside of the vehicle, worked fantastically in stereo. Plus the shot was a long shot, which works so well in stereo. That’s why it was my favorite shot.

There were many other great shots that utilized the 3D aspect of the movie really well: when vampires burst into flames in the sunlight, during the actions scenes when characters threw objects or shot arrows at someone, and when Farrell’s character sets fire to the protagonist’s house. Then there were the more intimate shots, which looked fantastic, and the establishing shots. There was a helicopter shot in the beginning where we’re looking down on the town birds-eye-view that was great to see in stereo. The decision to keep the camera moving for motion parallax was a great choice on the filmmakers part because they managed to make us want to look around the foreground objects at the subjects in the mid-ground. Fright Night had great editing for 3D because they held shots longer. They knew what they were doing when it came to pacing the shots to utilize the stereo space the best. As well the cutting was pivotal to our suspense, which was held throughout the final act of the movie.

In all I enjoyed the movie, found the 3D to fit the movie perfectly, and would recommend it to a friend. Due to the genre I can understand why it’s going to need word of mouth to get people into the theaters. It doesn’t help that it opened against 2 other 3D movies and 2 3D holdovers. Final Destination 5 still has the IMAX 3D screens where I went to see the movie. Also, since it’s not Twilight the numbers can’t be anywhere near the same, but when adjusted for ticket inflation the 1985 version made more money in its opening weekend. Let’s hope audiences find the movie and a lot more people see it.

FINAL DESTINATION 5 Sees A Stellar 75% Of Revenue From 3D *AND* Stereo Box Office More Than Doubles Last Year

Love seeing the naysayers cringe when they read reports like this, but clearly the people are speaking. 3D has been embraced the world around and it's getting better every year!

Even though FINAL DESTINATION may be showing signs of franchise fatigue (I really enjoyed the movie a great deal - wonderful 3D! Go see it!!), 3D clearly helped the movie as it still drew in $18.4 million and it held a staggering 75% of the gross from 3D screenings! (Source: BoxOfficeMojo) That brings us back to AVATAR-like percentages. Love it!

Moreover, a recent ScreenDigest study cited that Global 3D box office continued to grow and in fact doubled last year with a $6.1 billion take as compared to a $2.5 billion influx in 2009. That $6b reflects a 19.3% share of all box office revenue (only 8.6% share in 2009).

From Film Journal:
In terms of regional distribution, cinema analyst Charlotte Jones noted the largest share in Europe (24%) in comparison to North America (20.5%). 3D accounted for more than one-quarter of total box-office revenues in six territories, including Poland, Russia (33.1% share) and the Czech Republic. Following Japan’s largest individual gross ($471 million), the United Kingdom was the strongest 3D theatrical market in Western Europe ($427 mil. and 27.5% share). Of the countries profiled by IHS Screen Digest, Norway reported the lowest 3D box-office ratio (15.8%), followed by Turkey (15.9%). Norway also recorded the highest average 3D ticket price, but “this was relative to its blended ticket price.”

In July 2011, after a yearlong rollout, Norway became the first country in the world to have been fully digitized. “It has been a challenge due to [its] elongated shape with sparsely populated areas, but the process took one year less than anticipated,” and “VPF [virtual print fee] income is a bit higher than predicted,” with payments ending in 2017. Cinema association Film & Kino further noted that all 420 screens are equipped with mainly Christie projectors and Doremi servers, but 65 Sony 4Ks have also been installed and about 80% of the cinema locations are 3D-capable. Whereas the western region exclusively installed some 50 Dolby 3D units, the rest of the country deployed another 35 from Dolby along with XpanD (35), RealD (66) and MasterImage (31).

The 3D revolution is only just beginning with huge conversions on the way (THE AVENGERS, STAR WARS franchise and TITANIC) and of course THE HOBBIT movies and AVATAR 2 and 3 in production and development! Can't wait to see what 2012 brings us...

MUST WATCH: New FINAL DESTINATION 5 Trailer!

Hey guys - feast your eyes on glimpses of the opening death scene! Effects look CRAZY! And all of that in 3D - can't wait. The symmetry of the bridge in stereo is going to look amazing.

I must admit I have seen more inventive payback death scenes though - perhaps they are holding the good stuff for the movie which is a good move. What we see in this first trailer is more like fingernails on a chalkboard. Makes you very skiddish, but not all that inventive. So far...

Here's the synopsis:
No matter where you run, no matter where you hide... you can't cheat death. Death is just as omnipresent as ever, and is unleashed after one man's premonition saves a group of coworkers from a terrifying suspension bridge collapse. But this group of unsuspecting souls was never supposed to survive, and, in a terrifying race against time, the ill-fated group frantically tries to discover a way to escape Death's sinister agenda.

So have a look:

See: Three FINAL DESTINATION 5 Posters

Well the first three FINAL DESTINATION 5 posters have dropped and they are pretty much standard fare for the franchise - what can I say? The ominous skull is present in all of course and the prerequisite teens in peril / cowering! Looks to be somewhat higher stakes though regarding special effects as a lengthy suspension bridge will take massive damage this time around for the opening death scene.

Click the images to enlarge. Check out the higher resolution version over at IMP Awards (via Collider).

You all know the premise - Death comes after a group of teens that "mistakenly" avoid death in some horrific accident only to be reassigned a future death in the order in which they should have perished. And most of those deaths are quite inventive indeed.

FINAL DESTINATION 5 is special though. It is being shot with the Cameron - Pace Group's Fusion 3D Cameras, the same ones that Michael Bay used to shoot TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON. So it's in native 3D, just like it's immediate predecessor.

Here is the official description and synopsis from last fall:
Production is underway on New Line Cinema’s fifth installment of the “Final Destination” franchise, which began back in 2000, with the original film quickly becoming a cult hit. The new victims of Death’s plan are part of a cast led by Emma Bell (Frozen, TV’s “The Walking Dead”) and Nick D’Agosto (Fired Up!, TV’s “Heroes”). The film is being shot on location in Vancouver, Canada.

The second of the “Final Destination” films to be shot in 3-D, Final Destination 5 is being directed by Steve Quale, marking his major feature film directorial debut. Producer Craig Perry (”American Pie”) returns for the fifth time, working with executive producers Sheila Hanahan Taylor, Erik Holmberg, Richard Brener, Walter Hamada and David Neustadter. The screenplay was written by Eric Heisserer, with revisions by Gary Dauberman; Heisserer is no stranger to the horror genre, having penned New Line’s recent hit A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Final Destination 5 brings together an ensemble cast that includes Bell and D’Agosto, along with Miles Fisher (TV’s “Mad Men” and “Gossip Girl”), Arlen Escarpeta (Friday the 13th), Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (TV’s “The Bold and the Beautiful”), P.J. Byrne (Dinner for Schmucks) and Ellen Wroe (TV’s “Huge”). Rounding out the rest of the cast are Courtney B. Vance (TV’s “FlashForward,” “ER”), David Koechner (”The Office,” Anchorman) and “Final Destination” franchise icon Tony Todd (Hatchet II).

In this fifth installment, Death is just as omnipresent as ever, and is unleashed after one man’s premonition saves a group of coworkers from a terrifying suspension bridge collapse. But this group of unsuspecting souls was never supposed to survive, and, in a terrifying race against time, the ill-fated group frantically tries to discover a way to escape Death’s sinister agenda.

Collaborating with Steve Quale behind the scenes are director of photography Brian Pearson (Drive Angry 3D, My Bloody Valentine 3D); production designer David Sandefur (Repo Men, Journey to the Center of the Earth); editor Eric Sears (Shooter) and costume designer Jori Woodman (Eight Below).

The film is a production of New Line Cinema and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Stay tuned for more developments on this film! Can't wait to see the results from the CPG Fusion system again soon...

FINAL DESTINATION 5 opens August 26.

I think these movies give the Spike Channel's 1000 WAYS TO DIE a run for its money! Love the inventiveness. That bridge is fodder for quite a few demises I am sure...

First Look: David R. Ellis' SHARK NIGHT 3D

So we obviously need to have a shark attack movie in 3D right? I would love to see Jaws converted of course, but in the meanwhile here is SHARK NIGHT 3D.

This official image has Sara Paxton about to become a snack for a shark. The director, David R. Ellis (FINAL DESTINATION 2, 4 and SNAKES ON A PLANE) is clearly shooting for a 3D thrill ride movie with a title like SHARK NIGHT 3D (SN3D).

As a general rule, underwater images look outstanding in stereoscopic 3D and if it is done right, SN3D should have no trouble eliciting plenty of shocking scenes.

SHARK NIGHT 3D circles theaters September 2
and stars Katharine McPhee, Joel David Moore, Dustin Milligan, Chris Carmack, Alyssa Diaz, Donal Logue, Sinqua Walls and Chris Zylka.

A Look At Warner Bros. 2011 Lineup Of Stereoscopic 3D Movies!

Warner Bros has been taking stereoscopic 3D very seriously for awhile now but I must say their 2011 production line up of feature films looks simply amazing.

Let's take a look at what is in store for us in 2011 from Warner Bros:

1. GREEN LANTERN (June 17): This is my most anticipated WB release for 2011. Yes even more than Part 2 of DEATHLY HALLOWS. I would also say it is equally if not more important for Warner Bros too: The HARRY POTTER franchise is now drawing to a close and the DC Comics vault is being opened for the big screen. There is no secret in that timing. Huge potential of course. We have really only seen the capes of Superman and Batman on the silver screen - will the other heroic characters resonate with audiences? Will the faithful fans be pleased with the end product?

From what I have seen so far - there is no need to worry. Ryan Reynolds is perfect for the role in my opinion - and yes I have heard the dissenting views believe me. This is a home run. Can't wait to see it paint a green aura all around world's box office next June. Heck work has already begun on GREEN LANTERN 2 and THE FLASH...

Director: Martin Campbell
Writers: Greg Berlanti & Michael Green & Marc Guggenheim and Michael Goldenberg; Story by Greg Berlanti & Michael Green & Marc Guggenheim. Based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics
Producers: Donald De Line, Greg Berlanti
Executive Producers: Herbert W. Gains, Andrew Haas

Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Angela Bassett, Tim Robbins, Temuera Morrison, Jay O. Sanders, Taika Waititi, Jon Tenney

Action Adventure. In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds). Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity. With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax...he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all.

2. HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PT2 (July 15): Who hasn't been enchanted by the growth of this franchise and the development of these kids into fine young actors? While this is apparently the final movie in the HARRY POTTER series - all is not as it seems: Rowling has hinted that she will write further about the characters! Interesting indeed.

In the meantime, be prepared to witness a HUGE box office behemoth with this final release. Warner Bros will have had the time to complete this iteration in stereoscopic 3D and WILL reap the rewards. You can easily add a further 30% to the final tally. It was unfortunate that WB ran out of time in the 3D conversion of DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 1, but all is not lost - they will recoup all of that and more with the 3D Blu-ray release in the coming years.

This movie WILL be shown in IMAX 3D.

Director: David Yates
Writers: Steve Kloves
Based on the novel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling
Producers: David Heyman, David Barron, J.K. Rowling
Executive Producer: Lionel Wigram

Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Warwick Davis, Tom Felton, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon, Jason Isaacs, Alan Rickman, David Thewlis, Julie Walters, Bonnie Wright

Fantasy Adventure. In Part 2 of the epic finale, the battle between the good and evil forces of the Wizarding world escalates into an all-out war. The stakes have never been higher and no one is safe. But it is Harry Potter who may be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice as he draws closer to the climactic showdown with Lord Voldemort. It all ends here.

3. FINAL DESTINATION 5 (August 26): Ahhh the never ending confrontations with 'Death'! I truly enjoyed the fourth in the series and the 3D added that extra spark for me. Yes, 3D in horror is ALLOWED to be proudly gimmicky and rest assured that the fifth in the franchise will continue to throw things at us. And what's wrong with that? Sound is used as a gimmick in horror too: How many of you have jumped when the audience is blasted with 1,000,000 decibels cued exactly when a cat merely jumps off camera into view? 3D is amplifying that. And I love it. For use in horror and JACK-ASS movies only please. :-)

Director: Steven Quale
Writer: Eric Heisserer
Producers: Craig Perry, Warren Zide
Executive Producers: Sheila Hanahan Taylor, Eric Holmberg, Richard Brener, Walter Hamada, Dave Neustadter

Cast: Emma Bell, Nicholas D'Agosto, Miles Fisher, Arlen Escarpeta, Jacqueline MacInnes-Wood, P.J. Byrne, Ellen Wroe, David Koechner, Courtney B. Vance, Tony Todd
Horror. Death makes a killing in the next installment in the horror series which once again proves that no matter where you run, no matter where you hide...you can't cheat death.

4. DOLPHIN TALE (October 7): Yes, this is the true story about the boy who gathers a community together to build a prosthetic tail for a dolphin who lost it in a crab trap. SO - be prepared to bring a whole thing of Kleenex with you for your family. It is gonna get messy. You might as well be going to see a dolphin show in the front row - because that's how much water works are going to be happening. That said, it should be a good experience as water works so well in 3D - and a true story never hurts.

Director: Charles Martin Smith
Writers: Karen Janszen, Noam Dromi, Charles Martin Smith and Jordan Roberts
Producers: Broderick Johnson, Andrew A. Kosove, Richard Ingber
Executive Producers: Robert Engelman, Steven P. Wegner

Voice Cast: Morgan Freeman, Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd, Kris Kristofferson, Nathan Gamble

Family Adventure. "Dolphin Tale" is inspired by the remarkable true story of a courageous dolphin named Winter and the compassionate people who banded together to save her life.

5. HAPPY FEET 2 (November 18): I will be the first to admit my feet were happy during the original!! Loved the score. And man can that Robin Williams belt a tune! :-) Not too much more to say than: I WANT MORE - this time in 3D!

This movie WILL be shown in IMAX 3D.

Director: George Miller
Writer: George Miller
Producers: George Miller, Doug Mitchell

Voice Cast: Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Brad Pitt, Hank Azaria, Matt Damon, Alecia Moore (Pink), EG Daily

Animated Adventure. The sequel to the Academy Award®-winning animated smash hit, "Happy Feet 2" returns audiences to the magnificent landscape of Antarctica, reuniting us with the world's most famous tap-dancing penguin, Mumble (Elijah Wood), the love of his life, Gloria (Alecia Moore {Pink}) and their old friends Ramon and Lovelace (Robin Williams). Mumble and Gloria now have a son of their own, Erik (EG Daily), who is struggling to find his own particular talents in the Emperor Penguin world. But new dangers are threatening the penguin nation, and it's going to take everyone working--and dancing--together to save them.

6. JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (Release Date TBD): No more Brendan Fraser. *single tear of remorse* Ok, not really. I think Dwayne Johnson has got this thing sewn up. In fact I think he will do a better job than Fraser in this role. Sadly, to date he has not had the worldwide box office clout that Fraser has (which is actually quite a phenomenon). Back is Josh Peter Parker Hutcherson which is a good thing. Michael Caine? Brilliant move. Looking forward to that.

The live action 3D cinematography was excellent in the original JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, especially the Iceland scenes. And the T-Rex in 3D chase sequence? Amazing. LOVED it. Hoping for more of the same excellence.

Director: Brad Peyton
Writers: Richard Outten and Mark Gunn & Brian Gunn
Producers: Beau Flynn & Tripp Vinson, Charlotte Huggins
Executive Producers: Michael Bostick, Evan Turner, Marcus Viscidi

Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Michael Caine, Josh Hutcherson, Vanessa Hudgens, Luis Guzman, Kristin Davis

Family Adventure. The follow-up to the 2008 hit. The new journey begins when young adventurer Sean (Josh Hutcherson) receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island where no island should exist--a place of strange life forms, mountains of gold, deadly volcanoes, and more than one astonishing secret. Unable to stop him from going, Sean's new stepfather (Dwayne Johnson) joins the quest. Together with a helicopter pilot (Luis Guzman) and his beautiful, strong-willed daughter (Vanessa Hudgens), they set out to find the island, rescue its lone inhabitant and escape before seismic shockwaves force the island under the sea and bury its treasures forever.

This movie WILL be shown in IMAX 3D.

So there's the roundup! I'll be taking my family to see YOGI BEAR on December 17 (another Warner Bros 3D movie) and let me tell you the kids are amped up about it! Note that they also have a 3D documentary entitled BORN TO BE WILD (release date April 8 in IMAX only), narrated by Morgan Freeman that looks darn good too.

It gives me great pleasure to review what the coming months have in store for us in S3D from Warner Bros because they have earned it. When a major studio commits the way they have to 3D they have my ear. Good luck with the DC Comics vault guys and here's hoping for more Potter!!

What Warner Bros 3D movie are you most looking forward to in 2011?

Mild Spoilers: New SAW 3D Trailer Online!!

**MILD Spoilers**

Got the new SAW 3D trailer for you
- keep in mind it does give away some of the traps they have in store for you, but hey - that's modern marketing isn't it?

These traps certainly look as though they have been created with 3D in mind - you will see that when you view the trailer.

Storyline:
As a deadly battle rages over Jigsaw’s brutal legacy, a group of Jigsaw survivors gathers to seek the support of self-help guru and fellow survivor Bobby Dagen, a man whose own dark secrets unleash a new wave of terror.

Director: Kevin Greutert (SAW VI, OLD FRIENDS)
Cast:
- Tobin Bell (ALICE, THE FIRM, BURIED ALIVE, SAW)
- Cary Elwes (THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN: THE SECRET OF THE UNICORN, A CHRISTMAS CAROL)
- Costas Mandylor (THE ROGUE, THE CURSED)
- Betsy Russell (CHAIN LETTER)
- Sean Patrick Flanery (THE BOONDOCK SAINTS II: ALL SAINTS DAY)
- Gina Holden (FINAL DESTINATION 3, ALIENS VS PREDATOR - REQUIEM)

SAW 3D will be in theaters nationwide on October 29.

Perhaps this 3D iteration of the SAW franchise will reinvigorate the series? :-) More SAW? What about a spin off series that sets traps only with blunt instruments - something like MALLET? Seriously though, if SAW 3D makes a ton of money which I think it will, we may not have seen the end of Jigsaw.

What Movies Will Warner Bros Make 3D In 2011? Here's The List! And A Probable Too...

Got a list of Warner Bros upcoming movies that are definitely going 3D in 2011 so let's talk about those first:

- SUCKER PUNCH (March 25): Directed by Zack Snyder. Starring Vanessa Hudgens and Scott Glenn. A young girl is institutionalized by her wicked stepfather. Retreating to an alternative reality as a coping strategy, she envisions a plan which will help her escape from the facility.
- GREEN LANTERN (June 17): Directed by Martin Campbell. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Peter Sarsgaard and Blake Lively. A test pilot is granted a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe.
- HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART II (July 15): Directed by David Yates. Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Ralph Fiennes, Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman, John Hurt, Bill Nighy, Robbie Coltrane, Tom Felton and Helena Bonham Carter. The end is near as Harry, Ron, and Hermione go back to Hogwarts to find and destroy Voldemort's final horcruxes, but when Voldemort finds out about their mission, the biggest battle begins and life as they know it will never be the same again.
- FINAL DESTINATION 5 (Aug 26): Little is known about the fifth installment of the franchise but Eric Heisserer wrote the screenplay.
- JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH 2 (Sep 23): Directed by Brad Peyton. Starring Josh Hutcherson (so far). Little is known about the project's storyline.

- HAPPY FEET 2 (Nov 18): Directed by George Miller. Voices by Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Robin Williams, Elijah Wood and Hank Azaria. No storyline is known as of yet.

And the probables?

- THE HANGOVER 2 (May 26): Starring Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms. I asked Director Todd Phillips about it personally and he said that he would love to shoot it in 3D. This is a safe bet guys. The original movie hit the jackpot with $470m worldwide! Rumors are abound that Miami (according to Robin Leach) will be the location for the next HANGOVER - what do you think?
- SHERLOCK HOLMES 2 (Mid December 2011): Directed by Guy Ritchie. Starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. The LATimes spoke with the writers for the movie who said: "Sherlock would be great in 3-D".

Soderbergh's CONTAGION Goes Airborne In 3D!! Release Dates Set For FINAL DESTINATION 5 And JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH 2!

It is time for Warner Bros. to show off some of their upcoming 3D goods! And what a nice lineup!!

Warner has announced that Steven Soderbergh's CONTAGION will be released in 3D. CONTAGION stars Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Marion Cotillard and is set to be released October 21, 2011. The story is an action-thriller centered on the threat posed by a deadly disease and an international team of doctors contracted by the CDC to deal with the outbreak. CONTAGION's screenplay? Written by THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM's Scott Z. Burns.

If you'll remember
, Soderbergh is a huge fan of 3D and an especially huge fan of what AVATAR accomplished. I am 100% positive that you can expect a magnificent native 3D effort from him for both CONTAGION and his other 3D upcoming release CLEO (slated for a 2011 release). Soderbergh also loves shooting with RED digital cameras of which I am a rabid fan.

New Line has said that FINAL DESTINATION 5 will be screened August 26, 2011 - still no notables to mention, but I am fairly sure we will be seeing "Death" work in 3D again.

JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH 2 will be hitting our 3D screens on September 23, 2011! Rumors have Brendan Frasier (a good bet) and Josh Hutcherson returning, although the director's chair is still unoccupied at the moment.

I am loving these announcements, especially CONTAGION. Remember these projects will ALL be shot in native 3D. We can fully expect to see wonderful results as far as 3D is concerned and hopefully the story delivers!

Can't wait to hear more from Warner's...

3D Feeding Frenzy Continues! SHARK NIGHT 3D To Shoot This Summer

Jim here. According to Deadline, Director David R. Ellis (SNAKES ON A PLANE, THE FINAL DESTINATION) will be shooting SHARK NIGHT 3D in Louisiana this summer AND with mechanical sharks (By Walt Conti who did the creatures for DEEP BLUE SEA, FREE WILLY and ANACONDA). I would imagine there will be some CGI, and it will be interesting to see how it works for him.

Ellis, being a 3D aficionado, will be shooting his thriller in native 3D. To me, that would be a huge plus.

The budget is said to be set at $28 million and they are clearly aiming at the much earlier success of Spielberg's JAWS, but with 3D premiums. We'll see.

I think with the budget they have, Ellis is a perfect choice. Definitely looking forward to this one.

Warner Bros. Letting It Ride On 3D: FINAL DESTINATION, DC Comics Library, ALL Major Tentpoles In Fact!!

Jim here. Vegas is all about having the kahunas to bet big and Warner Bros. was in the right town for their gung ho announcement at ShoWest.

Alan Horn (Warner Bros head) gushed about 3D almost as much as we do right here! It was a pleasure to listen to him pontificate about it. Michael and I were practically high fiving every few seconds (ok not really, but MENTALLY we were).

So what properties are Warner Bros considering for next gen 3D catalog? How about ALL OF THEIR TENTPOLES? Yes. He said that. Remember that I predicted that a major studio would go all S3D a while back? Well... this is darn close. He also indicated that they will be replacing the cash cow HARRY POTTER with the DC Comic catalog.

Individually we are looking at: THE GREEN LANTERN, THE FLASH, potentially BATMAN, SUPERMAN... and...

The fourth iteration of FINAL DESTINATION was not all that final! So says Alan Horn. FINAL DESTINATION 5 will be reaping more lives very soon. I am all for this announcement too. There are plenty of folks out there that will speak out against the franchise, but I for one - LOVE them. Bring it on.

You know what guys?
I was actually expecting Disney to be the first studio to up the ante and say that all of their movies will be in 3D from now on. Warner Bros. really surprised me - but am I happy? Darn right. And at the rate these guys make money - it will only mushroom from here in 3D. :-)

The Top Ten 3D Movies Of 2009

Jim here. So what do you think - consensus on everybody's number 1? :-) I think so! Anyway, this list was due and I am sure others will want to voice their opinion as well so feel free to chime in with your top ten list too.

Here is mine in reverse order (Title - Studio | World Box Office | Tomatometer | Format - comment):

10. G-FORCE - Disney | $283m | 24% Fresh | CG / Live Action - A notable conversion effort.
9. THE FINAL DESTINATION - Warners | $153m | 28% Fresh | Live Action - Interesting seeing Death work in three dimensions.
8. DISNEY'S A CHRISTMAS CAROL - Disney | $255m | 55% Fresh | CG MoCap - Visually quite stunning, though character's faces were soulless.
7. MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D - Lionsgate | $100m | 55% Fresh | Live Action - Very good revisit to the original horror.
6. MONSTERS VS. ALIENS - DWA | $382m | 72% Fresh | Animation - Not Dreamworks best, but far from worst. Expect much more with HTTYD.
5. CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS - Sony | $195m | 85% Fresh | Animation - Excellent first outing in 3D animation for Sony. Impressed. Rivals DWA today.
4. CORALINE - Focus Features | $122m | 89% Fresh | Stop Motion - Henry Selick's vision and attention to details is astounding.
3. ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS - Fox | $888m | 45% Fresh | Animation - There is no doubting the worldwide popularity. Family Appeal.
2. UP - Pixar | $683m | 98% Fresh | Animation - A masterpiece of storytelling. 3D used well.
1. AVATAR - Fox | $760m, Still In Theaters | 83% Fresh | CG PerfCap / Live Action - Revolutionary Cinema. Nothing short of an event movie for this generation. A must see... twice.

Honorable Mention:
TOY STORY 1 & 2 3D Conversions.
Worst of 2009: BATTLE FOR TERRA

There is no doubting AVATAR as the top 3D movie of 2009. It may be the top MOVIE of the past decade. I certainly believe it is. Pixar has a heckuva entry with UP because the story is typical Pixar and so is the visual quality. And ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS was great family fun AND it raked in the cash.

All in all, a superb year for 3D! I look forward to 2010 and all the surprises in store: ALICE IN WONDERLAND, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, SHREK FOREVER AFTER, TOY STORY 3, MEGAMIND, RAPUNZEL, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, SAW VII, TRON LEGACY to name a few.

Stay tuned for the 2010 3D Movie Viewing Guide!
Now what is your top ten list for 3D in 2009?

Pascal Blanche, Art Director of "AVATAR: THE GAME" Interview!

Hi, Michael here with an interview with Pascal Blanché, Art Director of Ubisoft's James Cameron's AVATAR: THE GAME.

Pascal is a legend among artists, and as such his art direction makes me incredibly stoked to spend many an evening exploring Pandora, taking in the raw beauty of the environments between the tense battles. The amount of talent that has been poured into creating this game is incredible - there has never been a movie-based game that has benefited from such unprecedented levels of cooperation and respect between gamemaker and filmmaker. And in full-blown stereoscopic 3D to boot. Pascal lent his amazing talent to expand Pandora beyond what you will see in the movie, and I for one am eagerly anticipating spending plenty of time there:

Michael: When did you start working at Ubisoft? What was your first project there?

Pascal Blanché: I started with Ubisoft eight years ago. My first assignment was as a Character Designer/ Modeler for Myst IV Revelation. Since then, I’ve worked in the cinematics department for other games such as Rainbow Six and Assassins Creed, and then as Art Director for Naruto Rise of the Ninja. It’s been a long road, but it brought me to where I am now; Art Director on James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game.

Michael: When did you begin work on the Avatar games? Did you work on the presentation that got Ubisoft the job of making the game?

Pascal Blanché: I started with the project in September of 2007, shortly after it was officially launched by Cameron. I was in on the ground floor and was involved in the development of the prototype which we pitched to Lightstorm a few months later.

Michael: How was working on Avatar different from working on any other video game project you have worked on?

Pascal Blanché: I’ve worked before on original IP, game sequels, and even cartoons/manga adaptations. Avatar was my first movie-license title. The big change for me was how Lightstorm wanted us to work on their franchise. Most of the time, in other licensed games, you have to respect strict character sheets, and follow to the letter every aspect of the license. There is usually not that much room for creativity. On Avatar, I was given the chance to use all of Cameron’s universe (which includes the volumes of material that didn’t make it into the movie) and, with the team, add new elements to it.

Michael: Please describe your responsibilities as Art Director for the Avatar game. How much of your job was supervising other artists, versus creating your own designs? How many artists/designers did you supervise? Also, which artistic tools did you use to create your designs? (Maya, Photoshop, chalk on paper, all of the above?)

Pascal Blanché: There were around 40 artists on the project: level artists, character modelers, texture artists, FX artists, etc.... I worked closely with three very talented concept designers who filled-in all the blanks we had in designing the elements to be found in the game world. I was here more to supervise, and to make sure that we were following Lightstorm's basic philosophy when they created Pandora. So I was basically giving them guidance on pointed elements from the movie design. We created all sorts of new weapons, new armor, and new plants that were submitted to Cameron's team for approval. I was personally designing props as simple as roots and rocks, but with specific shapes needed to create the mood I was looking for in each of the game's many levels. Some of my designs (armor for example) made it into the final game, but not all! As for the tools we used: Photoshop, Painter, Zbrush and 3dsMax… a real mix of all at the same time ;).

Michael: Were you a James Cameron fan? If so, did that make you more excited for your job as art director on Avatar?

Pascal Blanché: Me? A Cameron fan? Without a doubt.... But more than just his movies, I share the same passion for sci-fi and fantasy. I remember making puppets after watching Dark Crystal when I was kid, and I had all the Ray Harryhausen films at home. I'm from the geek culture. I think that Dune is the best book ever written, that Frazetta, Moebius and Corben are living Gods, and I listen to the Planet of the Apes soundtracks on loop (the original version, of course). So when I found out that the game I was going to help develop was based on the next Cameron movie, I signed-on without a second’s hesitation.

Michael: Were you familiar with Avatar before learning that Ubisoft might be working on the games?

Pascal Blanché: I have a story for this one. I bought an art book, maybe two or three years before starting on the project: Worlds by Allec Gillis with a foreword by... James Cameron himself. In the book, he refers to Wayne Barlowe’s Expedition, a book I also had in my collection (I buy a lot of art books, I guess). When I was offered the job on Avatar, it was almost like I already knew where Cameron was going with Pandora…; it was intense.

Michael: What was it like meeting with James Cameron for the first time? What was your creative working relationship like? Did he often show you his own drawings? Any interesting anecdotes from meeting with Cameron? With Landau or other top guys?

Pascal Blanché: Well, he is Cameron you know. I tried my best to not act like a fan boy, and concentrated on any hint or morsel of advice he would give us. He was really on the same creative level with us, and after a while, I found myself (almost) forgetting who I was talking to. We would always take the time to prepare our meetings, to be sure that we were not wasting any time we had with him. I was amazed that when it came to the creative aspects of Pandora, he had all the time in the world for us (excuse the pun :-)). Because we had access to all the Lightstorm assets from day one, Pandora was common ground, and our questions were more about how far we could go with the weapon designs, the plants, the gear, etc.... So most of the time we were discussing those specific aspects while playing the game, and he was always extremely interested in the direction we had taken on various concepts. His inputs were really important to us, but he always reminded us that we were the game designers, and he was the film guy. He never insinuated that any ideas that he was throwing out there had to make it into the game. All said, he’s a really nice guy, and a man driven by the creative process.

Michael: Did you do any design work that you believe may end up in potential sequels to Avatar? I have read that Cameron has given Ubisoft tremendous creative freedom to come up with new ideas for Pandora, but that he had to reign in some designs / ideas because he didn't want them to contract ideas he had for sequels. Did you and Cameron discuss what you and the Ubi design team were allowed or not allowed to do, based on Cameron's ideas for sequels?

Pascal Blanché: We had ultimate freedom. Any potential for a sequel never appeared on our radar, so it definitely wasn’t a creative limitation.

Michael: Tell me about all the various sets and offices you visited. Specifically, what brought you down to Lightstorm, to the Howard Hughes hangar (perf-cap stage), and to Weta?

Pascal Blanché: I went several times to the hangar and Lightstorm’s offices in LA. Sometimes it was for meetings with Cameron, to show him a new concept in the game, sometimes it was to meet his team and talk about animations, props or environments. Jon Landau was also around, here in Montreal and in LA, to show us the latest scenes they had just wrapped for the movie. It was like being teased on the total experience once every few weeks! We went to Weta once, and it was like... being at the Lucas Ranch 30 years ago. Jim was super busy, shooting on this amazing set (some of the link room chamber you probably saw in the trailer). Jon gave us a tour of the set. It was surreal. There were one hundred tech, cam, and light guys, costumes, and people everywhere on the gargantuan set. Cameron was at the center of it all, asking for an adjustment or two before continuing the shot. We joined up with him in a room where we presented a new early version of the game, and he just lit up with design ideas, or ways to convey our game using his world. I think he was really having fun and our half-hour meeting stretched easily into an hour. The amassing crowd on the set was waiting for him to return so they could finish the shot. Totally crazy!

Michael: What is your favorite design or designs that you created for the game? What is your favorite Pandoran creature/plant?

Pascal Blanché: One particular character in the game, one of our Na'vi (sorry, his name is still Top Secret :-)), has great charisma. One of my character modelers, David Giraud, came up with the look, and the performance from the actor who voiced the role was second to none. He definitely fits into the Avatar universe! My favorite creature is the Thanator (the big, black panther-like beast from the trailer). It is fast, deadly, and pretty intelligent. What I love most is that Cameron hired one of the best in the business, Wayne Barlowe, for his bestiary look and feel. The guy is brilliant. He has this uniquely surreal aspect in his paintings: a cross between Dali, Bosch and H.R Giger that gives that unworldly feeling that you get when you watch the creature move.

Michael: Did any of your designs make it into the film? If so, which one(s)?

Pascal Blanché: Some elements of one of our Na'vi armor designs made it into the film, yes, but I can’t say more. Because of some pretty specific gameplay needs, Lightstorm provided us is with new, original vehicle designs, just for the game. When they saw how the vehicles played in the game, they thought it was cool and decided to suck them back into the movie.

Michael: What has been the most fun and exciting aspect of working on the Avatar game?

Pascal Blanché: Taking hundreds of movie concepts and making a world out of them. In the game, there are a multitude of varied and different environments. All of those environments draw upon Lightstorm designs, but we were allowed to extend them outside of the movie framework. So any time in the movie you fly over a unique or interesting place, in the game, you’ll be able to land on it and explore. Working on Pandora’s most beautiful sites and bringing them to life was a great experience. I love games where you can explore a new world on your own..., and our game is full of those moments when you stop fighting for your life for an instant to take some time and look around..., watching the sun arch over the Pandoran sky. Oh yea, I forgot to mention that the environmental lighting is dynamic, so you can go out in the wild and experience it during the day or night ( that is... if you survive long enough :-)). We added subtle visual cues to slightly change your perspective depending on who you decide to fight for. From the human point of view, Pandora is a very dangerous place. As a Na'vi , it is your home, your playground even! It's like being scuba-diver on one side (playing as a human), and the dolphin he’s looking at on the other (playing as a Na’vi). We changed the hues to make the world look darker and more ominous when you play as a human, and more saturated and colorful as a Na'vi.

Michael: What should gamers look forward to in the game?

Pascal Blanché: Avatar the game is huge. There is, for starters, two separate experiences: as an RDA Trooper or as an Avatar (fighting for the Na’vi). Two ways of playing…. One has more like a third person action/shooter, while the other is more of a hack and slash, melee-based gameplay style. A big part of the strategy in the game is finding a clever way to combine your skills and gear choices, something your survival will depend upon. Humans rely on long range weaponry and technology; the Na'vi on brutal force and nature. The player will have a choice to follow one path or another at a pivotal juncture in the game, and evolve from there. The game world is open within each map and can be played any way you choose. It definitely isn’t a corridor shooter or a linear brawler. You can decide which challenges you decide to take on, and action is always just around the corner. The more your experience grows, the greater your choice of skills and weaponry will be. Did I mention that you can drive vehicles and ride Pandora’s beasts? … and the multiplayer game modes? I guess we’ve got enough for a whole other interview!

Michael: I have read that Ubisoft has created its own CG animation studio, and that this studio has contributed final shots for the movie. Is this true? If so, did you do design work for those shots?

Pascal Blanché: What you’re referring to is Ubisoft’s Digital Arts (UDA) and Hybrid, our animation shop. UDA and Hybrid (the guys behind the effects of 300, Sin City and Final Destination 4) have been working together on a few projects. They’ve been working on effects for the film, yes, and they also came to our production floor to give us some hints on stereoscopy camera techniques.

Michael: How, if at all, did working on a stereoscopic 3D game based on a stereoscopic 3D film affect your job as art director? Did it complicate things? If so, how?

Pascal Blanché: I had two specific guidelines I had to consider, the first of which was to follow the movie’s stereoscopic 3D philosophy and try to recreate it within the game. I watched closely at how Cameron handled the cameras in his preview shots to give the sense of depth, and how I could translate that into the game with subtle moves of the camera that still follows the action and mimics an over-the-shoulder feel. The results were terrific. The camera moves drive you more into the game's space (when viewed in stereoscopic 3D) and give you the impression that you are physically behind your character in the game. The second aspect to consider was in the composition. It is one thing to stage composition in a single frame, another story when the player can actually look anywhere he wants to. I came up with basic rules for the level artists to make sure we always have nice foreground/background effects, and comfortable sense of depth while guiding the player visually. I think they did a terrific job on all of the different environments we developed. Some levels will give you a sense of height and verticality, while others will make you feel the expanse of an open plain.

Michael: After Avatar, what is your next project?

Pascal Blanché: For the immediate future…, LOTS of vacation. I’ve got to catch up on all of the sleep I lost during the project! I’ve seen what’s coming through the pipeline here at Ubisoft Montreal, and it looks like I’ll have a couple of tough decisions to make (plenty of interesting projects :-)). But in the meantime… vacation.

A huge thanks to Pascal for answering these questions!

Weinstein: HELLRAISER, SCANNERS, SPY KIDS 4 And HALLOWEEN Confirmed in 3D!

Jim here. No surprise here really with this year's success of horror films in stereoscopic 3D. Variety reports that Bob Weinstein is pushing 3D on his aptly named Dimension shingle and pushing it in a big way.

SPY KIDS 4 is being written right now by Robert Rodriguez and will begin lensing in March 2010 in partnership with Disney. If you will remember, SPY KIDS 3D did exceptionally well at the box office before modern 3D took over - they used the terrible old red and blue glasses. SK3 took in $197,011,982 worldwide. Obviously Dimension wants to repeat or better that result.

We now know that Patrick Lussier (MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D) will be helming HALLOWEEN III and Weinstein has this property high on his list - look for launch in October 2010 - yep most likely head to head with SAW VI (October 23). By the way, SAW VII has been confirmed to be 3D - but we knew that was coming since January didn't we?

So lets see here now, what else is going 3D? How about the HELLRAISER franchise? Pinhead himself will grace the silver screens once again but this time in 3D! This is one series I am really looking forward to - hopefully they land the right director.

SCANNERS will also explode into 3D. No word on whether David Cronenberg will come back to reprise as director - and no, the only 3D headaches will be ON the screen :-)

Weinstein did mention a couple of other reboots that I am assuming could also make it to 3D: SCREAM (Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette have all signed on) and CHILDREN OF THE CORN (the 3D would be amazing hovering over the swaying cornfields at eye level - they HAVE to do this!)

Further on financing Weinstein said: "There is no question that financing is readily available to produce and market these films. I am eager to expand our scope in the 3D business."

Remains to be seen if they shoot in native 3D or go the 2D to 3D conversion route in post production. I suspect that once they choose a path they will stick with it with all of their properties. I have not heard either way on this yet and will post as soon as I hear something.

Oh and in case you were wondering how 3D has been doing lately? CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS will be owning the box office for the second weekend in a row, so far with a stellar $5.6 million on Friday besting SURROGATES. This after a gigantic showing by THE FINAL DESTINATION earlier in the month. See where I am going with this?

Not only is 3D here to stay, it is now the standard for horror and animation. Next up? SciFi. Sometime around December 18th I believe... :-)

THE RING In 3D? Horror Movies Find Their Sweet Spot

Jim here. Rumors (BloodyDisgusting) are flying about the third installment of THE RING franchise going stereoscopic 3D. Of course! HALLOWEEN is doing the same thing. What sane horror production would not consider 3D after the stunning display of THE FINAL DESTINATION (TFD) the past 3 weeks? The awesome payback that MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D gave it's investors?

I went to see TFD again last night. This time I paid more attention to the 3D as with any well done stereo movie, you tend to forget it is in 3D after awhile. It is done very, very well. Obvious scenes like where the camera is flush with the pavement at the raceway amplify the 3D of course - but it is when it is used almost subliminally that it really makes a difference. Like during the last scene of the movie in the coffee shop, the 3D camera intentionally leaves the background behind the glass window in focus - and without really thinking about it, you are made nervous. A transparent surface with imperfections (or cafe lettering) in 3D looks amazing.

It is scenes like that - creative 3D use, that excites me. AVATAR will be full of them.

So it seems horror has found the holy grail of 3D works not only for the movie, but for the box office. THE RING will be no exception. In fact you could simply pencil in ANY horror movie with the term 3D after it and it just makes sense. It will only be a matter of time before it spreads to other genres as the defacto standard - SciFi is next.

THE RING is all about young victims dying after viewing a strange videotape. 3D will bring the audience into it and help suspend disbelief even further. Should be one not to miss.

THE FINAL DESTINATION Is 3D For The Second Straight Week!

Jim here. The competition wasn't too too strong, but a very VERY nice return for THE FINAL DESTINATION once again! According to Box Office Mojo, flick will do $12.4 million in its second stanza - good enough to repeat as the top box office draw. Do you think 3D had anything to do with it? Of course!

I saw GAMER last night and I was quite disappointed. Some parts were laugh out loud bad. Sure there were great moments, but overall absolutely no competition of THE FINAL DESTINATION.

The 3D is well done and there are gimmicks of course - it is a horror movie after all - with objects poking back at you. It is one of the few genres to be able to get away with it. Makes you jump - all the better right? And audiences certainly agree. Its worth a look if you haven't checked it out yet.

Thank you Empire Theaters for the screening of THE FINAL DESTINATION.

Nicholas Cage's DRIVE ANGRY and HALLOWEEN 3D Planned

**UPDATE: September 2 - Rumors have the director for HALLOWEEN 3D as being Steve Miner (H20, HOUSE, WARLOCK, FRIDAY THE 13TH 2 & 3). Interesting!!

Jim here. As my friend Matthew has pointed out to me - "Soon it will be news when a new movie *isn't* in 3D". And he is soooo right.

Two more 3D movies are getting greenlit:

Nicholas Cage has signed on to star in DRIVE ANGRY - a story about a father who exacts revenge on the roads for the murder of his daughter and the kidnapping of her baby. Bodies are left on the roads as the death toll mounts - reminds me of a cross between DEATH RACE 2000 and DEATH WISH.

From HeatVision: "Danny Dimbort, Trevor Short, Avi Lerner and Boaz Davidson are executive producing for Nu Image/Millennium, which is planning to begin production in April in Louisiana; the company has a new $10 million studio in Shreveport, La.

"Angry" will be the first foray into 3D for Nu Image/Millenium and marks a return to the format for Lussier. The director, who got his feature start editing horror movies for Wes Craven, last directed "My Bloody Valentine 3D," which grossed $51 million domestically this year."

Here is the good news - Todd Farmer and Patrick Lussier wrote the story and the latter will be directing. I feel MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D was done very well for the money involved and DRIVE ANGRY should bring in the masses for Nu Image / Millenium Films. Cage has got legions of fans - especially overseas.

Ready for Nic Cage in 3D? The time has come! :-) Shooting is slated for April 2010 in Louisiana.

Secondly we have HALLOWEEN 3D being offered up from the Weinsteins - which makes perfect sense to me. With THE FINAL DESTINATION kicking HALLOWEEN 2's butt this weekend, they weren't going to not go 3D for the next iteration of the re-energized franchise. However it will have to be without Rob Zombie this time around as he is committed to making THE BLOB.

From the LATimes: "The investment it takes to shoot movies in digital 3-D has proved particularly lucrative for horror films. For "The Final Destination," this weekend's No. 1 movie, theaters with at least one 3-D screen earned 3.25 times as much as those that showed the movie in 2-D only, according to distributor Warner Bros."

Bob Weinstein said the studio is talking with a new helmer for H3D who he did not want to name at this time - but did say that this director has a "different take" on the franchise and is experienced in horror.

Who will the Weinstein's get for HALLOWEEN 3D? Any wagers? Sounds like a no brainer to me though: Make a movie for $15 million and have it easily recouped the first weekend? Wow. Seeing FD do so well though made them stop and think "what if". Not anymore. Look for HALLOWEEN 3D in the summer of next year.

Stay tuned for more about HALLOWEEN 3D and DRIVE ANGRY when I get it.
