World Wide Web 3D | Geolocation & Stereoscopic Space

Part II: Geolocation & Stereoscopic Space

Tim here, and I want to add to a series I'm going to deem World Wide Web 3D (WWW3D) from now on. This will be a multi-part post. However, please don't regard this posting series to be on a regular basis, but sporadically, as articles will come when they come. This article can be attributed in large part to the efforts of Adobe and their recent Web Updates. Adobe Edge brings web animation closer to After Effects, which does stereoscopic graphics as well as any other 3D software application. Where will the web go with this stereoscopic revolution regarding Google Maps?

Simply put: maps are geometric calculations based on the Earth, as measured via scientifically accurate measures from satellites. Google has a street view on major cities, but also very good 3D imaging. Mobile devices are now receiving those direct navigations more accurately, and thus with stereoscopic imaging on phones the major mapping corporations will be able to use all data to accurately portray certain information to people to make them more informed.

Imagine a situation... You and a friend are out in the world, someplace unfamiliar, and you decide to find food. Based on up to date information businesses can be found, and geolocation coordinates can be discovered. Most street view software used by Google images 360° all around a given point, and merges multiple photographs together to make a composite. Soon those multiple images will have simple stereo calculations providing stereo view through processor conversion. This of course requires algorithms written by a standards comity for various screen sizes...

Most WWW3D sites will require standard screen sizes, but at the same time if one could calculate the biggest screen size imaginable and go off percentages of that, then websites and stereo calculations can be easily derived. This comes to cooperation of web-enabled devices' manufacturers. I promise that's impossible in that competitive market. Thus, it will happen in due time: one year and six months. That's at least the time required for standards to be decided on and current autostereoscopic displays could be implemented on devices already out on market. Then the web's tool sets will have to be slightly refined to include stereo space more frequently, and some language may have to be written for commands and style settings.

Now this works perfectly with the major adoptive use for phones, but finding where you're trying to go, that's the big seller of mobile devices. That's why Google Maps was so important to iPhone users. Imagine when all mobile devices are feeding traffic patterns. I know most mobile phones can get an app now that uses to navigation features to give a speedometer. Major speeding violations could possibly be tracked via satellite, and cell carriers could be fined, forcing all passengers to reinforce slower driving. However, that's another concept for another time. The key is stereo integration. Those 3D maps will be able to help people navigate places better, and the future of 3D mapping will shock many.

Don't forget some thoughts on the future from our past interpretations. Automatically navigated vehicles are a major part of those future interpretations. It will be here because of the 3D mapping, which will accurately display more detailed information to the people at the controls. Even law enforcement will benefit because they could use newly gathered traffic data to designate specific speed limits at certain times to all the mobile users in a given area. That's some decent new regulations that are best for safety and avoiding speed traps easier because you're getting a constant reminder from a phone.

How easily will those stereoscopic devices be able to give back web pages that are in stereo? Especially when the software helps code the values in percentages for various screen sizes. This easily allows web designers to gear the stereo content for the maximum screen and each screen smaller than that to a certain percentage based on the standard display sizes. In its nature Adobe Edge does this for animations and other features to be supported on the various screens. Why can't stereo be as easily controlled?

Something that will become a staple of modern technology will be in New York City cabs, and other modern city taxi services, as eventually it is possible for them to have stereo HD touch-screens that run specific apps; such as globalization map oversight, internet connectivity, and naturally ads on both a local, federal, and international level. The experience will be different, but intelligent. Transactions will be able to controlled through it because all taxis will have little computer drives in them that are offloaded by a taxi company at the end of each shift. It's all going to be connected, and the stereo is for the passenger as much as the control is there for the companies, who will make revenue from the ads. Although there are no open plans for this yet, it's a natural evolutionary step to get giddy about. Sure will make taxi rides more bearable.

As a final thought to this topic: Apple led the way with their tablets. The first tablet company (Google's Android is looking solid to lead since MasterImage uses their software) to develop all this into a device that is stereo ready, and push the web aspects along with the app design structure, will reign huge amongst the others. It's an untapped market that will happen in the next year and six months. Adoption of standards, however? We'll see how standards come into practice, and in the next post I'll cover more specifically how future updates to Edge, based on where After Effects has reached, will allow stereographers to work more elegantly through a web environment.

Optional Branded 3D Glasses Set For THE AVENGERS Launch!

Very cool! The IRON MAN glasses actually remind me of the Gas-can type of 3D glasses that Oakley sent me for TINTIN - although obviously the optics and quality in the Oakley are far superior.

Check out the branded options for Thor, Hulk and Captain America as well! These glasses should make their way to theaters worldwide, seeing as though the source of this image is from a great Italian film site, BadTaste.it. Note that the cinema tech branded on the side is RealD which is the leader in US installations, but not worldwide. Wondering if MasterImage3D and/or others will be involved too?

Note that these glasses will incur an additional cost - but to me it would be worth it as you can reuse them over and over, just like the Ingra:Dahl glasses that are on the left side of this site.

Which style do you prefer? I think I would go for the Iron Man version first followed by Thor. Kinda cool that Hulk's glasses has what seems to be a furrowed eyebrows on the top!

CES 2012: Must See S3D Products & Services!

Well CES 2012 is almost upon us and what better way to warm up to the infamous show than to go over some of what you will see there!

This year is something special. 3D has taken the world by storm and now some truly awe inspiring products are hitting the market now after some R&D has been spent.

2012 is the year of autostereoscopic 3D - no glasses required. Many new products will be revealed this year from such companies as LG (computer monitor), Stream TV and Magentic 3D. But I have not seen these offerings and cannot vouch for them. I CAN vouch for MasterImage 3D's tablet sized displays however as I have used them...

1. MasterImage 3D's 10.1" Autostereoscopic displays: Yes, glasses free screens for tablets are here already much faster than I thought would happen. No need for any 3D glasses whatsoever and believe me, the screens are very impressive. I saw the 7" version at Cinemacon last spring and wow. Amazing depth from such a portable screen.

MasterImage uses their proprietary Cell Matrix Parallax technology. It offers both portrait and landscape modes and can easily switch from 3D to 2D.

Here are the Display's features:
- High brightness level and wide viewing angle, delivering the sharpest and highest quality 3D images
- Elimination of crosstalk (ghosting)
- Switchable between 2D and 3D modes. Reverse compatible with existing 2D content
- Switchable between portrait and landscape modes in 3D, unique to ‘Cell Matrix Parallax’
- Compatible with all existing flat display technologies
- Cost effective – Manufacturing simplicity resulting in high yields

I can't wait to see their 3D demos at some point using their 10.1" display! The 7" was great, but of course the larger the screen, the better the 3D. It won't be long before we see these things in our standard issue tablets!

2. 3D Now's Theater - Drop In Black Box 3D Solution For Your 2D Television: A new non-anaglyphic frame-sequential stereoscopic processor to allow you to create S3D content from your existing 2D investment. Apparently first in the world. The content must be in 1080p with HDMI input, so that includes Blu-ray players, video game consoles, cable, satellite, Internet, etc.

From their press release:
"Almost everyone wants to enjoy all of the great new 3D content becoming more and more available, but most people don't want to invest in a new 3D-ready flat panel display or projector," said Doug Smith, director of sales for 3D Now. "3D Now Theater is the perfect solution for instantly converting those 2D displays into high performance 3D experience."

To achieve "instant 3D", 3D Now Theater utilizes 3D Now's proprietary frame interleaving with active shutter technology. 3D Now's system integrates the latest 3D standards and is far superior to either the passive shutter or the older anaglyphic technologies - used in alternative products. Passive technology skips every second line of the frame in the processing thus delivering a lesser quality picture while the anaglyphic format does not store the color schemes in the processing degrading the picture quality. 3D Now's active shutter technology is the most advanced technology and delivers a true stereoscopic 3D viewing that doesn't derogate the original source.

High quality 3D performance is also achieved thanks to 3D Now's Active Shutter RF Eyewear. Unlike competitive IR eyewear, the 3D Now Eyewear allows the viewer to turn his or her head without losing synchronization, achieving a smooth, continuous 3D presentation. Critical to maintaining the qualities of the original content, the 3D Now Eyewear features high contrast ratio, high uniformity and fast response time. The 3D Now Eyewear is comfortable to wear and large enough to wear comfortably even over prescription glasses.

The 3D Now Theater processor will be available through authorized dealers and retailers in the U.S. beginning in early Spring 2012.

3D Now will showcase the new 3D Now Theater at Booth 21166 (The Powerhouse Alliance booth) in the South Hall at CES 2012, held January 10-13 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

About 3D Now LLC
3D Now is the world's first producer of non-anaglyphic frame-sequential stereoscopic processors. 3D Now's unique technology allows users to instantly and easily convert high definition 2D displays into 3D displays. For more information on 3D Now, visit http://www.3dnow.com.

Just as I thought when this story came to me (thanks Wm Turner!), that the heavy lifting will have to be done with the glasses as the televisions are all 2D. Active Shutter is the only way to go with this.

I am setting up an interview with these guys shortly. Stay tuned for more info.

4. LG's 84" 3D Ultra Definition TV: LG Electronics will showcase the "world's largest" 3D Ultra Definition (UD) HDTV measuring an incredible 84-inches and feature a 3840 x 2160 resolution (4K), 8 million pixels, a slim and narrow bezel design, 3D Depth Control and 3D Sound Zooming.

The LG display will also offer more than just razor-sharp graphics. The company said it will come packed with LG's Smart TV ecosystem that provides over 1,200 apps and a library of 3D movies. Users will navigate through the content using LG's new ergonomically-designed Magic Remote which supports four different types of input: Voice Recognition, Wheel, Magic Gesture and Point. There's also a 2D to 3D conversion engine that brings older flat content to new 3D depths.
"LG is pushing the limits of home entertainment innovation with this 3D UD TV," said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. "We are bringing together all our Smart TV and 3D knowledge in the 3D UD TV in order to demonstrate to the CES audience that LG is committed to being the world’s leading brand for immersive home entertainment in 2012 and beyond."

Pricing and availability my be disclosed at the show. From what I have seen and read - WOW. Note that LG subscribes to passive 3D technology, so their TVs use the same type of glasses as RealD does at the theater.

GAMING UPDATE: HALO Going 3D *AND* MasterImage's Glasses Free Display - 500 Times Better Than The 3DS!

Time for a 3D gaming update! And it's a humdinger on two fronts...

Microsoft's humungous gaming franchise HALO is going 3D for the upcoming November release of HALO: ANNIVERSARY. The game will be a reboot of the original HALO game made (can you believe it) 10 years ago.

Further it is the first of the lot to NOT be made by Bungie Software. Really looking forward to this!

*AND*

Word is starting to get out about MasterImage 3D's new 4.3" WVGA (this is the same one I reported on back in May). Venturebeat's Dean Takahashi demoed one recently and was suitably impressed.

Says Takahashi: "The quality blew me away. On a 4.3-inch WVGA screen, Taylor showed that he could demonstrate a 3D movie running in stereoscopic 3D. I didn’t need to wear glasses to see the sharp 3D imagery. When I moved my head, it didn’t get blurry. And if I moved my head too far to the side, it gracefully transitioned to a two-dimensional image."

Roy Taylor, EVP & GM For MasterImage 3D recently said: “We’ve measured their alignment accuracy and we believe we’re 500 percent more accurate than the 3DS. We don’t have any issues with eye strain.”

I was not impressed with the Nintendo 3DS from the very start. In fact the best thing about it was their marketing I suppose. I found the screen to be headache inducing and just not a pleasurable gaming experience. Personally I think Nintendo should seriously consider the cell matrix parallax barrier technology from MasterImage 3D for any future handheld needs.

But that's not the end of the product line from MasterImage 3D. 7" and 10" tablet screens are coming this fall! Stay tuned!!

FINAL DESTINATION 5 Sees A Stellar 75% Of Revenue From 3D *AND* Stereo Box Office More Than Doubles Last Year

Love seeing the naysayers cringe when they read reports like this, but clearly the people are speaking. 3D has been embraced the world around and it's getting better every year!

Even though FINAL DESTINATION may be showing signs of franchise fatigue (I really enjoyed the movie a great deal - wonderful 3D! Go see it!!), 3D clearly helped the movie as it still drew in $18.4 million and it held a staggering 75% of the gross from 3D screenings! (Source: BoxOfficeMojo) That brings us back to AVATAR-like percentages. Love it!

Moreover, a recent ScreenDigest study cited that Global 3D box office continued to grow and in fact doubled last year with a $6.1 billion take as compared to a $2.5 billion influx in 2009. That $6b reflects a 19.3% share of all box office revenue (only 8.6% share in 2009).

From Film Journal:
In terms of regional distribution, cinema analyst Charlotte Jones noted the largest share in Europe (24%) in comparison to North America (20.5%). 3D accounted for more than one-quarter of total box-office revenues in six territories, including Poland, Russia (33.1% share) and the Czech Republic. Following Japan’s largest individual gross ($471 million), the United Kingdom was the strongest 3D theatrical market in Western Europe ($427 mil. and 27.5% share). Of the countries profiled by IHS Screen Digest, Norway reported the lowest 3D box-office ratio (15.8%), followed by Turkey (15.9%). Norway also recorded the highest average 3D ticket price, but “this was relative to its blended ticket price.”

In July 2011, after a yearlong rollout, Norway became the first country in the world to have been fully digitized. “It has been a challenge due to [its] elongated shape with sparsely populated areas, but the process took one year less than anticipated,” and “VPF [virtual print fee] income is a bit higher than predicted,” with payments ending in 2017. Cinema association Film & Kino further noted that all 420 screens are equipped with mainly Christie projectors and Doremi servers, but 65 Sony 4Ks have also been installed and about 80% of the cinema locations are 3D-capable. Whereas the western region exclusively installed some 50 Dolby 3D units, the rest of the country deployed another 35 from Dolby along with XpanD (35), RealD (66) and MasterImage (31).

The 3D revolution is only just beginning with huge conversions on the way (THE AVENGERS, STAR WARS franchise and TITANIC) and of course THE HOBBIT movies and AVATAR 2 and 3 in production and development! Can't wait to see what 2012 brings us...

MasterImage 3D Announces New Glasses Free 3D CELL Reference Tablet Using OMAP 4 From TI

Very cool news for autostereoscopic (glasses free) 3D fans! My friends at MasterImage 3D are rapidly advancing in this arena and have yet another announcement in the field. I have personally seen their new Cell-Matrix tech (at Cinemacon 2011) and it looks AMAZING.

Here's the official press release (emphasis is mine):

MasterImage 3D’s Cell-Matrix Parallax Barrier display provides developers a powerful environment to create their next-generation Autostereoscopic 3D content

Taipei, Taiwan (May 30, 2011) – MasterImage 3D today announced the availability of its new CELL reference tablet, giving developers and designers access to MasterImage 3D’s patented Cell-Matrix Parallax Barrier technology. The CELL tablet is based on PandaBoard—the OMAP4430 applications processor-based mobile software development platform. MasterImage 3D leverages the OMAP™ 4 platform technology from Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) to add cutting-edge features to its popular Autostereoscopic “glasses free” 3D display. A demonstration of the new CELL reference tablet will be hosted by MasterImage 3D at their booth at Computex Taipei 2011, Hall 3 booths G766/G768.

"The depth and breadth of TI’s expertise will enable MasterImage 3D to deliver the industry's most innovative AS3D solutions," said Roy Taylor Executive Vice President and General Manager of MasterImage 3D Display. "By integrating the OMAP 4 platform-based PandaBoard into our next-generation systems, we can provide high performance development platforms for the most demanding developers."

Consumer electronics leaders are aggressively including AS3D in new devices to enhance user-experience, allowing them to view user-generated images and video, 3D movies, games, apps and eye-popping user-interface design. MasterImage 3D is the fastest growing stereo 3D company in the world with a successful 3D cinema business including over 3,000 3D digital cinema system installations in over 60 countries. Its display business is about to power dozens of new smartphone, tablet, car and aircraft display design wins.

The MasterImage 3D mobile display is based its patented cell-matrix parallax barrier, which uses a ‘cell gap’ approach to let users switch easily between landscape and portrait modes and between 3D and 2D functions. As more polarized light passes through, images are brighter and ‘ghosting’ is reduced so it allows for the sharpest quality across all content categories (video, games, apps, user-interface, photos). The MasterImage 3D technology works with any kind of display, from TFT to OLED, PDP and more, and the company’s patented manufacturing process for its 3D displays delivers an extremely high production yield while keeping costs low.

"TI is pleased to work with MasterImage 3D, whose visionary commitment to the user-experience has inspired new uses for glasses-free stereo 3D technology," said Fred Cohen, director, OMAP wireless ecosystem, TI. "With the broadest portfolio of maximum performance SOC solutions, we can provide all the pieces and advanced features required for exciting new AS3D consumer products."

MasterImage 3D’s CELL reference tablet is currently available in 4.3” and 7.0” with 10.1” coming this summer. Contact the company directly on how to gain more information. Visit MasterImage 3D’s booth to see glasses-free mobile 3D of some of the latest summer’s big 3D blockbusters, AAA 3D games, video from 3D studio, Digital Revolution Studios and 3D UI from Rigthware.

MasterImage 3D Launches Kid-Sized Glasses And New Hollywood Headquarters

Some cool news from fast growing MasterImage 3D who supply theatrical 3D systems worldwide: New kid's glasses AND new digs.

Here are their press releases (emphasis is mine): MasterImage 3D, the fastest-growing supplier of digital 3D cinema systems, now offers smaller kid-sized 3D glasses designed to give children the best possible 3D experience in MasterImage 3D-equipped theaters.

The company’s new kid-sized 3D glasses began shipping worldwide this month, just in time for the wide slate of family-friendly 3D movies opening during the holiday season — from Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole to Tangled, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Nutcracker in 3D, Megamind, and Gulliver’s Travels.

Designed to sit securely on children’s smaller faces, the kid-sized MasterImage 3D glasses are fitted with the same advanced, circular polarized lenses as the company’s full-sized glasses. With this new offering, MasterImage 3D now provides theaters with three 3D glasses options: Single-use and reusable adult-sized glasses, and single-use kid-sized glasses.

“With so many 3D features aimed at families, the overall 3D theater experience has to be enjoyable for everyone,” said MasterImage 3D CEO and Chairman, Younghoon Lee. “MasterImage’s kid-sized glasses are light and right-sized, so they don’t slip off and pull kids — and parents — out of the story. Our goal is to help everyone enjoy the experience of 3D.”
MasterImage 3D has also expanded its headquarters with a move today into new offices at Raleigh Studios. Located in the heart of Hollywood, MasterImage 3D’s new residence in the long-standing independent studio doubles its footprint and gives the company in-house access to its premiere demonstration and customer training venue, the Charlie Chaplin theatre, which is equipped with the MasterImage digital 3D cinema system.

**AND**

MasterImage 3D’s new headquarters at 5300 Melrose Ave. is located in the Studio’s West Office Building. It houses executive, sales and marketing offices, an on-site depot and customer support space and dedicated R&D for the company’s auto-stereoscopic (glasses-free) 3D displays. Primary R&D and manufacturing continue to be based in Seoul, Korea and the company maintains regional sales offices in Pinewood Studios, UK; Tokyo, Japan; and Beijing, China.

MasterImage 3D CEO and Chairman Younghoon Lee said, “We needed a facility with the resources that could serve both our growing number of theaters in North America and our expanding employee base. Raleigh Studios offered us a flexible setup, and with our 3D digital cinema system installed on the premises we’re able to bring interested theater owners right in to see the technology. It’s important that we’re in a studio setting with a full theater experience so we can better work with our customers and content producers alike as we continue to evolve our technology.”

MasterImage 3D provides pioneering 3D solutions for theaters, mobile devices and gaming. With 2,500 cinema systems installed in 40 countries, MasterImage 3D is the fastest-growing digital 3D cinema system supplier, offering audiences the best, brightest 3D experience while providing exhibitors with a compelling ownership-based pricing model. The company’s auto-stereoscopic display technology enabled one of the world’s first glasses-free 3D mobile phones and its 3D camera ASIC empowers users to create and share 3D content. MasterImage 3D is gearing up to deploy its 3D display units with multiple mobile device manufacturers worldwide with product expected to hit the market in 2011. The company was founded in 2004, is privately held.
