Must Watch: PIRANHA 3DD Full Trailer

Well here it is! The first full trailer for PIRANHA 3DD and it seems to be more of the same that the first delivered, which isn't a bad thing according to the box office ($83m).

Here's the official movie storyline:
Having awoken from their spring break extravaganza at Lake Victoria, the swarm heads upstream where they look to make a meal out of Big Wet, a local water park where when it comes to fun, nobody does it wetter! Thought they came to get wet, get loaded and get some, the staff and patrons get more than they bargained for when they must face the fiercest, most bloodthirsty piranhas yet. Lead by the strong-willed, studious Maddy and her friends, Barry and Kyle, the trio must dive in and take on these man-eating creatures using every ounce of their being…but can they be stopped?

I actually am surprised that I like David Hasselhoff's role in this! It certainly sets the tone for it. Gives it some much needed reality to try and make this thing viable in our minds. Yes, he is NOT a lifeguard. Perfect!

Now if we could get a release date...

MUST WATCH: New Trailer For THE AVENGERS!!

As promised, here is the new trailer for THE AVENGERS and it does not disappoint! Be prepared for a few surprises...

Here's a quick synopsis about what you are about to see:
Nick Fury and the international agency S.H.I.E.L.D. bring together a team of super humans to form The Avengers to help save the Earth from Loki and his alien army.

Director: Joss Whedon
Writer: Zak Penn
Studio: Paramount Pictures
Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johannson and Samuel L. Jackson
Release: May 4, 2012

I won't talk about the trailer until after the embed because I don't want to give anything away... ENJOY!

Talk about a few surprises! I would never have guessed that The Hulk would be saving Iron Man's life - at least not in this movie. Those two characters have had a rocky history in the Marvel comics, in fact Tony Stark went so far as to design a suit meant for battling Hulk called the Hulkbuster (I have a review of that armor through my Sideshow Collectible found here).

And that airborne serpent - very interesting! Have to love the group shot with the pan around too! Bring on May 4th!!

MUST WATCH: Guy Pearce's Peter Weyland Of PROMETHEUS Gives Futuristic Speech!! **UPDATED**

**UPDATED with Speaker and Talk Info!

Whoa!! I love where this is going!
Check out this new clip that Ridley Scott and Damon Lindelof dreamed up and shot for the TED conference today.

Note that this scene is NOT from the movie PROMETHEUS, but it does feature one heckuva speech made by Guy Pearce in the character of Peter Weyland! The video is supposed to take place in the future the TED 2023 conference to be precise.

For more information you can go to the new website www.WeylandIndustries.com to keep a watchful eye.

About the video:
Peter Weyland has been a magnet for controversy since he announced his intent to build the first convincingly humanoid robotic system by the end of the decade.

Whether challenging the ethical boundaries of medicine with nanotechnology or going toe to toe with the Vatican itself on the issue of gene-therapy sterilization, Sir Peter prides himself on his motto, “If we can, we must.” After a three year media blackout, Weyland has finally emerged to reveal where he’s heading next. Wherever that may be, we will most certainly want to follow.

Conceived and designed by Ridley Scott and Damon Lindelof and directed by Luke Scott.

About the speaker:
Sir Peter Weyland was born in Mumbai, India at the turn of the Millennium. The progeny of two brilliant parents; His mother, an Oxford Educated Professor of Comparative Mythology, his father, a self-taught software Engineer, it was clear from an early age that Sir Peter’s capabilities would only be eclipsed by his ambition to realize them. By the age of fourteen, he had already registered a dozen patents in a wide range of fields from biotech to robotics, but it would be his dynamic break-throughs in generating synthetic atmosphere above the polar ice cap that gained him worldwide recognition and spawned an empire.

In less than a decade, Weyland Corporation became a worldwide leader in emerging technologies and launched the first privatized industrial mission to leave the planet Earth. “There are other worlds than this one,” Sir Peter boldly declared, “And if there is no air to breathe, we will simply have to make it.”

Here's a Q&A with PROMETHEUS writer Damon Lindelof about this video:
How did you come to the idea of writing a TEDTalk connected to Prometheus?
In really, really good science fiction the line between the science and the fiction is blurry. When I started attending TED, that line got even blurrier — I started hearing about ideas that were, in my own imagination, more far out than some of the science fiction I was seeing.

Prometheus takes place in the future, but it’s a movie about ideas, and I just felt like it would be really cool to have one of the characters from the movie give a TEDTalk. Obviously, since the movie is set in the distant future, it would have to be a little more contemporary. But wouldn’t it be cool if it was a TED talk from a decade in the future? And what is a TEDTalk going to look like in 10 years? And what would this guy have to say?

Then I understand you contacted Tom Rielly at TED, and started working together. What was it like working with him to construct a fictional TEDTalk?

My first assumption was that TED was never going to go for it. At the end of the day, it was a cool viral piece. I never thought in my wildest dreams we would get the actual TED branding. I thought we have to end up calling it a NED talk. But Tom is every bit as much a geek as I am, and we sort of subscribe to the same sort of pop-culture influences, and he was already into what Ridley was doing. He just completely sparked the idea.

[Says Tom Rielly: "Damon asked if we wanted to be involved in a Ridley Scott movie, and I thought, 'oh twist my arm'.]

I said, “l’ll write this thing, and we’ll put it in front of you guys, and if you think it’s cool, we would love to platform it at TED, and make it only viewable through TED.” Because I liked the idea of exposing a more general audience to, “Wait a minute, I’ve never heard of this thing. There’s more talks here.” I thought it could be mutually beneficial — as opposed to overtly cram-it-down-your-face viral marketing, which I don’t think anyone wanted to do.

The video has all these wonderful science fiction elements, floating cameras and such — was it different writing for an existing event than writing other scifi?

No, all scifi starts in some kind of grounded reality that seems familiar, and then the tornado comes and take you into Oz. I feel the same way about a TEDTalk. I know there was some discussion about what the scale of this was going to be. I think that it’s probably out there that TEDTalks are going to be happening in arenas and stadiums in 12 years, but we also thought that a guy like Peter Weyland — whose ego is just massive, and the ideas that he’s advancing are nothing short of hubris — that he’d basically say to TED, “If you want me to give a talk, I’m giving it in Wembley Stadium.” So, he could actually bend the idea of what a TEDTalk is to him. Could you get an arena-level crowd to show up and listen to someone talk about ideas? That to me was the cool step outside the realm that we’re all comfortable knowing.

As an aficionado of TED itself and what TED does, I feel the intimacy is very important. I hope that in 2023 it’s still happening in Long Beach on a fairly intimate level, but those talks are available on a widespread basis. But it wouldn’t have been as cool to say, “In 2023, TEDTalks are going to look the same exact way that they do in 2012.”

What’s your favorite TEDTalk?

Ken Robinson on the failure of creativity in education. That was my inaugural TEDTalk, and it completely and totally blew my mind, just in terms of how concise and easily and with humor his ideas were presented, and I was just thinking and thinking about it for days. It’s really impacted the way my wife and I decided to educate our kid.

Obviously JJ’s Mystery Box TEDTalk was a personal favorite. Then, Kevin Slavin who gave talk about algorithms, love that talk. Paul Nicklen, the photographer, showed all the pictures he took up in the Arctic — that was breathtaking. I remember a talk about vertical farming that was like, “What?”

Oh! And the one that was given by Elizabeth Gilbert was fantastic.

As a professional screenwriter, what do you think is it about TEDTalks that makes it work?

I look at myself more as a storyteller than a screenwriter, as pretentious as that may sound, but that’s what really attracts me to TEDTalks. For me the really effective ones are being presented by expert storytellers. I think that people think of a narrative story as something that has a beginning, middle and end — you know, it follows these conventional rules. But that’s not the way that I look at story at all. You can tell a story about the state of education and provide anecdotal evidence, or tell a story about algorithms. That’s what all these things have in common. What’s really great about them is that the person who’s telling the story is the hero of the story. They’re advancing sometimes a very small experience that might have big, far-reaching implications. Or they might have an idea that is nothing short of mythic — like having laptops at every single desk in a third-world country.

There’s the storytelling aspect of the format, and the limitations of having to fit it within this timeframe — that 18 minutes is not just about appealing to people with short attention spans. It’s really stating the same thing as Twitter does: “If you can’t say it within 140 characters, then it probably isn’t worth saying.”

You’re known for telling stories that are infused with really big ideas. Is there a special challenge in making a story that doesn’t have a tidy end, or doesn’t close in all the normal ways, but maybe does get at a much bigger idea?

Yeah. I believe that this idea of story or myth or this thing that Joseph Campbell writes about is sort of an inter-connective spiritual force — like The Force in Star Wars — where it doesn’t matter where you were raised, or what your background is, there are certain elements of story that totally appeal to you.

When the blanks aren’t filled in for you, your own imagination tends to fill them in. That’s the storytelling that I’ve always been interested in. I certainly have suffered the slings and arrows of criticism for being too vague at times, but I always give much more credit to this sort of collective consciousness and imagination of the audience watching my story than on my own imagination.

And so there’s that idea of leaving some things up for grabs, so that you can personalize the story in your own way. There’s certainly a road that I want you to go down in my storytelling, but if you choose not to go down it, that’s very exciting for me. I feel like great TEDTalks are ones that are a little bit subject to interpretation, that do provoke further conversation — and potentially controversy. They’re the talks that, when you walk out of them, you need to instantly seek out somebody else who heard it to talk more about it, without the presence of the person who presented the idea. At that point, you’re now grafting the idea to your own psychological framework, and that’s what really great story does.

It looks like Prometheus is much more idea-driven than other movies in this genre, and that there are some enormous ideas coming. Was it a challenge to weave that into an existing mythos?

Look, Ridley Scott birthed this universe over two decades ago. My job was to sit and listen and to channel, in the same way that a medium does. This was about the ideas that he wanted to convey, and he did not want to come back and do science fiction again unless there was some kind of a philosophical construct to it. That’s why Blade Runner, which didn’t really enjoy commercial success when it first came out, is viewed as a classic, and is still being discussed and dissected: there are these fundamental ideas about humanity, our relationship with technology, the presence of a soul — those are all the things that drive Blade Runner. Ridley was reaching for the fruit on the tree of knowledge in the ideas that he was having about this movie.

At the same time, there is a line where a movie becomes overtly pretentious. We wanted to stay on the right side of it, because once you cross it, there’s no going back. There had to be a version of this movie that presented big ideas, but didn’t really wallow around and spend all it’s time basking in the glory of it’s own intelligence. We wanted to make an entertaining movie at the same time. Hopefully, it’s a hybrid in tone between the original Alien and Blade Runner. I mean, Inception is a wonderful movie and I love it, but I also love that people are shooting guns at each other and buildings are exploding.

You talked about how, when you listen to a good TEDTalk you want to go in another room and talk to someone about it, and I think a lot of that comes from the fact that you relate to the speaker and sympathize with them. Was it a challenge writing a talk for a speaker who is very unlikable in a lot of ways?

No. First off, Guy Pearce is a brilliant actor — you basically just write the words and let the actor do what they’re going to do with the words. And Peter Weyland’s role is still a toss-up for the audience. They don’t know what he’s going to be in the movie, or how this talk relates to the movie. I do think that, if someone is going to be saying the things that this guy is saying, then there is a god complex inherent in the speech. Guy Pearce took that and ran with it, and I feel like that gives it a certain degree of entertaining power.

What would your TEDTalk be about?

Ha! I couldn’t even begin to fathom it. I would think that the obvious route would be to talk about storytelling, but I wouldn’t be able to go where everybody would expect me to go. I would delve into a slightly more surprising terrain, although I have no idea what that means. If I were to do a TEDTalk, I would challenge myself to make people gasp.

As if I couldn't get any more amped about a movie - along comes a stellar piece of marketing focusing on one, just one character and blows it completely out of the water! Pearce NAILS this. The movie... will be AN EVENT like we haven't seen since AVATAR.

MUST WATCH: STAR TREK 2 Spy Video Clips!

Ok - just how much mileage can one spy get out of this thing? First there is a bunch of photos that were leaked out over the course of a few days and now a full blown video showing Zachary Quinto's Spock battling Benedict Cumberbatch's evil character in STAR TREK 2.

The RIDICULOUS voice over for this video almost makes it unwatchable but you can clearly see the pains at which J.J. Abrams is taking to make this battle very, very realistic.

Looks great JJ!

Watch: New TV Spot For Pixar's BRAVE

Check out the latest from BRAVE with this new TV spot. Beautiful highland music carries this thing as we see clips from the movie. I am hopeful that this type of music is throughout the movie itself as well.

Here's the storyline:
Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In “Brave,” a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts. Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Wise Woman (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

Must See: New Poster For THE AVENGERS!

We have a brand new assemble poster for you from Marvel's THE AVENGERS while we are waiting for the much anticipated trailer due to drop tomorrow.

Check out the size of The Hulk! Of course it's all out of proportion, unless Captain America has gotten into some serious growth hormone. We are definitely in for some kind of wicked street level fight.

I find it interesting that Mark Ruffalo ranks ahead of Chris Hemsworth in the casting header. He is unproven in the role, but I guess his contract has dictated such. Here's hoping he nails it!

Check back tomorrow for the trailer!!

Comments On The 2012 Oscars And Why 3D Won!!

Well to say I'm not disappointed would be lying, but there are many things that happened last night that was good for stereoscopic 3D. Yes HUGO did not win for Best Picture or for Director, two awards that I thought it had very legitimate odds to win. Certainly Scorsese deserved it as did the entire movie - but that has been the way with the Oscars of late.

The good news is HUGO won a bunch of technical awards, including Visual Effects, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Art Direction and Cinematography. The Visual Effects award was a surprise to me as I thought that TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON (another 3D movie) was the clear winner. In fact I had RETURN TO THE PLANET OF THE APES in second!

Here's why these awards are important to the S3D industry: There is no category or award for stereoscopic 3D excellence. The closest thing to a potential future S3D award is the current Cinematography and/or Visual Effects awards. Why both? Well a conversion (and most native 3D productions require SOME conversion too) is a post production workflow. Yes, 3D must be considered while shooting a conversion too of course (if it is going to be good that is) which means cinematography. And a native 3D production is heavier on the cinematography side for 3D, but still has elements of it in post (conversion). So for an innovative 3D movie like HUGO to dominate the technicals is effectively a broad pat on the back for the 3D accomplishments of the movie. Well done!

A let out a huge sigh when Dreamworks Animation lost out to RANGO in the animation award. Big mistake in my books. I liked PUSS IN BOOTS here. Definitely.

I was further disappointed that the 3D documentary PINA did not capture Oscar either. Oh well. The doc has won worldwide acclaim already.

No need to comment in any depth on the acting awards for me. Yes I believe Viola Davis should have won for THE HELP, but other than that I was happy with the other results, especially Christopher Plummer's win (though Nick Nolte did a bang up job - any other year Nick!).

So while there were some typical surprises and disappointments with the awards, it was still a HUGE victory for S3D with the technical dominance of HUGO. My hats off to all those involved! Keep up the hard work. It pays off!!

MUST SEE: More STAR TREK 2 Spy Images - Abrams Is Not Pleased!

Well of course J.J. Abrams is not pleased. They have been working on STAR TREK 2 for some time now and to have photos leaked this early - even before we know the name of the movie itself - is not a good thing, creatively anyway. From a marketing point of view, I think it's a great thing to happen, as long as there are no more occurrences for awhile. There has to be some semblance of security on set!

Here's what Zoe Saldana (Uhura) had to say:
"J.J. was very upset. I have to say that. It's not going to stop people from intruding, but they are, and it's such a bummer because it only hurts them by stealing away the surprise."

...And Zachary Quinto's reaction too:
"The picture leaking did not go over so well. They’re go to great lengths to preserve security."

So today, to rub it in further, we have three more spy shots and to me they're even better. We see J.J. in action, Cumberbatch overcoming the Vulcan Nerve Pinch with a successful move of his own and more of Zoe Saldana as Uhura.

Cool seeing Quinto's stunt double too.

Here is a video of Zoe Saldana's response to the spy shots being leaked (note that the beautiful minds at MTV have blocked this from viewers outside the US):

MUST WATCH: New Clip And Featurette For JOHN CARTER! **Spoilers**

I HAVE to add the spoilers tag to this post as I believe they are giving away a lot of visual sequences here that are in the movie. It's my preference to make sure you guys know that. Some studios can go overboard in their marketing to try and get the "on the fence" crowd to come and see their movies. For me though, that may ruin the films for those that say "you had me with the title".

So fair warning then: Spoilers may exist for you in these clips!

Here's the storyline once more:
From Academy Award winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes JOHN CARTER–a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). JOHN CARTER is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

It's looking ridiculously good don't you think? :-)

MUST WATCH: Behind The Scenes With JOHN CARTER! 3 Clips!!

You should all know by now that I love behind the scenes footage! That's where the magic happens for movies if you ask me. The pre-production planning, the on set action, the post production visual effects is so compelling to watch.

Word is getting out that JOHN CARTER is an event movie and I am really anticipating this experience a great deal. I just watched these three behind-the-scenes (BTS) clips and now I am three-fold amped about it!

I am reminded of the pre-production of AVATAR during the B-roll first reel. The painstaking detail and creativity needed is very evident - very cool to see this coming together after all those years.

So check out these clips - they will definitely boost your anticipation! JOHN CARTER opens March 9 @ midnight (if you make this screening you'll get a free Mondo poster). Thanks for the heads up Yves!

STAR WARS EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE Passes $1 Billion - Achieves #10 All Time

THR reports that STAR WARS EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE has passed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office! MENACE has accumulated $73.4 million thus far in it's 3D re-release format ($35.8m domestically / $37.6m overseas) to reach $1,000.4 billion on Wednesday.

MENACE passed THE DARK KNIGHT to become the #10 all time box office earner when it picked up an additional $1.5 million this week.

Congratulations to the STAR WARS team! Looking forward to seeing the entire series converted ASAP!!

MUST SEE: Set Photos From STAR TREK 2! Quinto And Saldana Vs. Cumberbatch!!

FINALLY we see something cool from the set of JJ Abrams STAR TREK 2! A couple of interesting photos to say the least. First up we have Spock (Zachary Quinto) applying his Vulcan nerve pinch to Benedict Cumberbatch's villain role (of which we still don't know his official name). However it seems Cumberbatch is somehow able to avoid the grip somehow as he seems quite conscious and looking to counter!

MTV reports (don't laugh, but they called this maneuver the Vulcan Death Grip which obviously has never existed) that the two are fighting aboard a "space barge set". Let's hope it's not a garbage scow for the sake of James Doohan's character!

Speculation that Cumberbatch was actually part of Starfleet before his turn to villainy? Many think his shirt hints at that.

Further we have Uhura (Zoe Saldana) drawing iron against Cumberbatch in the second photo. MTV says she does so to save Spock's life. The standard large green screen looms behind. Seems this villain is a busy dude. I just hope I don't keep seeing Sherlock Holmes every time he's on the screen (he nails that role if you haven't seen the BBC series yet).

So all in all some very exciting photos to be digested here! What do you make of the scenes? STAR TREK 2 is being converted to 3D and is slated for a May 17, 2013 opening.

MUST SEE: New Trailer For WRATH OF THE TITANS - Massive New Creatures!!

I am loving what I see for WRATH OF THE TITANS, though I am a bit worried about the marketing team giving us all the glorious visual effects scenes of this movie in these trailers!

And those visual effects are astounding. Can't wait to see them in 3D! It'll be like a living dream with these things battling in front of you.

Here's the storyline for WRATH OF THE TITANS:
A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus (Worthington) –the demigod son of Zeus (Neeson)–is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son, Helius. Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity’s lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades (Fiennes) and Poseidon (Danny Huston). The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous underworld. Perseus cannot ignore his true calling when Hades, along with Zeus’ godly son, Ares (Edgar Ramirez), switch loyalties and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus. The Titans’ strength grows stronger as Zeus’ remaining godly powers are siphoned, and hell is unleashed on earth. Enlisting the help of the warrior Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), Poseidon’s demigod son, Argenor (Toby Kebbell), and fallen god Hephaestus (Bill Nighy), Perseus bravely embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, overthrow the Titans and save mankind.

Check out the trailer (go for HD!):

Circle March 30 on your calendars for some good ol' gods vs. humans fisticuffs!

Watch: Second Trailer For Pixar's BRAVE

So far so good with the latest reveal from Pixar's BRAVE. I have not been awed by what I've seen thus far, but the showdown that we knew was going to happen between mother (clearly the family's matriarch) and daughter hasn't disappointed yet.

I'm looking for a typical strong story from the Pixar / Disney gang. The characters seem strong enough and there certainly is some Scottish humor aptly injected giving solid winks to the highlanders.

I want to see more of the story now though. The characters have passed scrutiny somewhat but where's the peril? (The question reminds me of Monty Python's Holy Grail!) But seriously, I want to see what they are up against here. We have an idea of course from previous hints (see storyline below), but I need something a bit more solid visually.

So have a look and tell me what you think:

Here's the movie's storyline:

Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

Directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, and produced by Katherine Sarafian, “Brave” is a grand adventure full of heart, memorable characters and the signature Pixar humor enjoyed by audiences of all ages. The film takes aim at theaters on June 22, 2012, and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.

You know the ol' arrow splitting an arrow has been done SO many times before. We all knew what was going to happen with that clip. I want something exciting! Is that too much to ask? I don't think so seeing as it's coming from Pixar...

MUST SEE: New Mondo IMAX Poster For Disney's JOHN CARTER

Now THIS is a poster folks. The fine folks at Mondo have released this epic new poster for JOHN CARTER in IMAX.

Apparently this poster comes free with admission to the midnight IMAX screenings of JOHN CARTER! I cannot confirm or deny it - so good luck with it. I'm going to try to get one...

Here's the movie's storyline:
From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes JOHN CARTER –a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars).

JOHN CARTER opens March 9.

See: New Poster For MEN IN BLACK III

Yet another 3D movie poster! Love it. They do tend to come in bunches! Here's Sony's poster for MEN IN BLACK III starring Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin.

The movie's official storyline:
In Men in Black 3, Agents J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) are back… in time. J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner. But when K’s life and the fate of the planet are put at stake, Agent J will have to travel back in time to put things right. J discovers that there are secrets to the universe that K never told him — secrets that will reveal themselves as he teams up with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save his partner, the agency, and the future of humankind.

Kind of a plain Jane poster but I'm digging the black and white branding this franchise enjoys!

MEN IN BLACK III is being released on May 25.

Watch: Scrat's ICE AGE 4 Featurette Parodies THE ARTIST!

Those of you (and there are many!) who love the ICE AGE franchise will love this featurette too. The movie's creative artists have adapted some past clips to black & white and have added some silent movie touches to mimic Oscar nominee THE ARTIST.

Interesting approach. Nothing really new as far as clips are concerned as far as I can see, but I like that the movie marketeers are so in tune with current industry events. You don't see the other animations out this year doing such clever pieces (not yet anyway).

ICE AGE: CONTINENTAL DRIFT opens July 13.

Enjoy the clip!

MUST SEE: New Poster For Pixar's BRAVE

Continuing in 3D movie posters week, we have Disney / Pixar's BRAVE! I actually like this poster much more than the others as you can begin to see some emotion in her face. Of course the colors and imagery of Scotland look amazing.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In “Brave,” a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts.

SEE: New Images From MEN IN BLACK III

Here are some more images from Barry Sonnenfeld's MEN IN BLACK III, scanned yet again from Empire Magazine.

We see Will Smith with various facial expressions as Agent J jumping on cars and riding elevators and always armed. Yes even in the elevator without a weapon, he is MIMICKING holding a gun :-)

Here's the movie's storyline:

As I see more media for this movie I am becoming more and more interested. I think I am anticipating the time traveling aspect of the story. Certainly the actors are appealing in their own right. Bring on some more teasers Sony!

SEE: First Poster For Tim Burton's FRANKENWEENIE

In what must be 3D movie poster day on MarketSaw, here's the first poster for Tim Burton's FRANKENWEENIE.

I would say that Burton got Disney to throw in this production as a kicker to the deal that had him make ALICE IN WONDERLAND. If they can make a FIFTH of what that behemoth made in the box office it will be a rousing success.

Note that Burton already made this movie in 1984 but he has wanted to revisit it for a long time.

Voice cast in this stop motion animated 3D feature are Martin Short, Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, Martin Landau amongst others.

Here's the movie's storyline:
From creative genius Tim Burton (“Alice in Wonderland,” The Nightmare Before Christmas”) comes “Frankenweenie,” a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.

FRANKENWEENIE has an October 5 release date. Here's the movie's official Facebook Page.

SEE: "Double" The Posters From PIRANHA 3DD

"Double The Action. Double The Terror. Double The D's" says the movie posters' tagline. Double the posters too! PIRANHA 3DD kicks off international marketing with two posters more or less highlighting the two most important aspects of the movie's franchise: Piranhas and bikini clad women. Sure it's a cop out, but let's face it: It works.

You all know what you will be getting when you go see this movie. If you are expecting a decent story or outstanding acting you should probably look elsewhere, though I will say I thoroughly enjoyed Richard Dreyfus and Elisabeth Shue's performances in the first iteration.

PIRANHA 3DD stars Christopher Lloyd, Gary Busey, David Hasselhoff, Katrina Bowden, Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, Meagan Tandy, Chris Zylka and Paul Scheer.

Here's the official movie storyline:
Having awoken from their spring break extravaganza at Lake Victoria, the swarm heads upstream where they look to make a meal out of Big Wet, a local water park where when it comes to fun, nobody does it wetter! Though they came to get wet, get loaded and get some, the staff and patrons get more than they bargained for when they must face the fiercest, most bloodthirsty piranhas yet. Lead by the strong-willed, studious Maddy and her friends, Barry and Kyle, the trio must dive in and take on these man-eating creatures using every ounce of their being…but can they be stopped? Shot in 3-D and feauturing Esquire Magazine’s “2011 Sexiest Woman Alive,” Katrina Bowden and the return of Christopher Lloyd, Paul Scheer and Ving Rhames alongside fresh bait Gary Busey and David Hasselhoff, the film that took an $80 Million bite out of the box office is back for more…only this time it has double the terror and double the D!

My biggest fear with this movie? It isn't the creatures. It's the 3D conversion. Do it right this time PLEASE!

SEE: New Image From Marvel's THE AVENGERS

Fresh from an Empire Magazine scan comes the latest official image from the sure fire blockbuster THE AVENGERS.

I like that we get a good comparison shot between Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Captain America (Chris Evans). Got to say that Thor and Iron Man are going to win the costume pageant for this movie, but I like the utilitarian feeling from these three. They look like they GET THINGS DONE.

Here's the storyline:
Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures “Marvel’s The Avengers”–the Super Hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when “Marvel’s The Avengers” assemble in summer 2012. In “Marvel’s The Avengers,” superheroes team up to pull the world back from the brink of disaster when an unexpected enemy threatens global security.

THE AVENGERS open on May 4. What a year for comic book adaptations!

Peter Parker Purists Rejoice! First Viral Clip From THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Hits...

Wondering if Andrew Garfield plays a better Peter Parker than Tobey Maguire? Wonder no more if you ask me. It's a resounding YES. Love this clip showing the vulnerability and lack of social awareness of a young Peter Parker who is at times seemingly dumbfounded by the reactions of some people despite being a genius.

For me, this underscores just how much I am going to LOVE this movie. They had to nail Peter Parker before they nailed Spider-man and it looks like Sony's got one heckuva nail gun.

Check out the brief, yet poignant scene (watch in HD):

The clip is from the new viral campaign for Mark of the Spider-man that started recently. Looking forward to more of this!

Exclusive Interview - GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE's Jenny Fulle, Visual Effects Producer

I had the pleasure of speaking recently with Jenny Fulle, Visual Effects Producer on GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE and Founder of The Creative Cartel. We have spoken in the past (PRIEST) and I thoroughly enjoy the info she has to offer in these interviews!

For some background, Jenny started her own visual effects company called The Creative-Cartel that I think has found an ideal niche in Hollywood - an outsourced visual effects department. Here is what makes her company stand out: They will contract with a production to work with the director and examine each shot in the movie to determine the best possible visual effects shop to tackle it. Each shop has their own areas of expertise. Sometimes a shot may require an ILM or WETA, but other times it can be a small boutique shop. The Creative-Cartel then manages it all. They have their own infrastructure in place that is carried through from project to project.

But here's the rub: The Creative-Cartel (TCC) also does this for S3D conversion needs! They will shop around for the best conversion companies to do particular shots and then will oversee the piecing together of these components into one cohesive movie that is seamless to the viewer. Brilliant.

The Creative-Cartel not only oversaw all of the 800 visual effects shots that were completed by five different visual effects houses and the Stereo conversion of the entire film, but also developed a groundbreaking hybrid pipeline that allowed the primary visual effects company (Iloura) and the 3D Conversion Companies (Gener8 and Legend3D) to share shots in a way that optimized quality and maximized the budget. This groundbreaking pipeline initiated by The Creative-Cartel enabled shots to go back and forth between the companies, allowing the sharing of elements (and eliminating the need for duplicative work) and for the VFX to be rendered in native stereo. All of this resulted in SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE having the same richness and dimensionality as he would have if the film had be shot using with 3D cameras.

So how will her expertise add pop to GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE? Have a listen!

0:40 - On directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor
1:20 - On what Jenny and The Creative Cartel offers for visual effects services
3:20 - On the suspension of disbelief efforts for SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE
3:45 - On the challenge of CG fire being converted to 3D
4:18 - On the "Hybrid Pipeline": About 500 shots are actually native 3D CG mixed with converted 3D
5:25 - On Gener8 and Legend3D work converting to 3D
5:39 - On doing 800+ visual effects shots using 5 different visual effects vendors
7:55 - On new proprietary technology for 3D conversion lowering the cost of work
8:26 - On one scene that she is particularly proud of in the movie
9:50 - On how Mark and Brian are making an authentic version of the original comic book vs. the first movie
11:37 - On whether the 3D in SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE rivals native 3D
12:55 - On the need for hybrid (native + conversion) 3D solutions in most cases
13:15 - On singling out one person / company that deserves extra credit for their work on the movie
14:03 - On whether Nicholas Cage has a sign off on visual effects for the movie
14:28 - On Jenny's current project M. Night Shyamalan's AFTER EARTH (not 3D btw)
15:00 - On wrapping up TED (Seth MacFarlane's feature debut), a 'R' rated comedy with a degenerate CG teddy bear

Thank you Columbia Pictures and Rachel Falikoff for setting this thing up! I think Jenny is one of the most forward thinking creative persons in Hollywood today.

GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE burns out into theaters TODAY! Check it out!! I will let you know what I think about the movie and how well a fast edited movie will convert to 3D as soon as I see it myself!

Who Will Win The Ultra Hi-End Theatrical 3D Projection Race?

You have probably all heard by now that Peter Jackson is shooting THE HOBBIT movies at 48 frames per second which is double the 24 frames that is standard now. James Cameron will be also shooting AVATAR 2 and 3 at a higher frame rate. Word is getting out that higher frame rates are the future, especially for 3D. The experience is sublime!

But what about the back end of all this? We have major tentpoles now being conceived and shot with higher frame rates but what about the projection? Is the industry keeping pace? Can we actually see the results of all these improvements on the production side of things?

The short answer is yes. Most of the new digital projectors today can handle higher frame rates. Keep in mind that 3D systems (like MasterImage3D or RealD) are typically add-ons to these projectors. But the longer answer is audiences are demanding more and more from theater presentations. IMAX has already proved that over and over again throughout their existence.

We all know about IMAX and their large screens but did you know they recently bought out all the patents for Kodak's laser projection technology? There were about 50 patents involved that enable the display of digital content to large 80 to 100 foot screens and dome theaters. Brightness is the key.

Further, IMAX has taken these patents in hand and teamed up with Belgium based Barco to pool their expertise in creating a 'super' projection technology to display digital movies on a large, large scale. It's a seven year partnership deal which sees some royalties revert back to Kodak.

Barco has been recently installed in the Empire Theatres chain where I live and I have thoroughly enjoyed the new projection.

The IMAX / Barco partnership sounds great does it not? The end result should be fantastic! But I'm not done yet...

Industry visionary (and legendary) Douglas Trumbull (Brainstorm was a movie that deeply affected me) has his own plans, and grandiose plans they are! He developed Showscan so he has the chops to deliver more so than just about anyone else other than IMAX. Concurrent with receiving multiple awards for his projection technology prowess, Trumbull is also trying to secure financing for his next big set of ideas. And 3D is a huge part of it.

Trumbull has set up shop in Massachusetts to show off what he has deemed "Hypercinema"...

Here is what he had to say on the tech:
"No one in the industry has seen a 3D movie at 30 foot Lamberts at 120 frames per second. What happens when you get into this hyper-real realm of a movie, that seems to be a window onto reality, is that the entire cinematic language begins to change." He wants to make a movie using Hypercinema and move away from the master shots, two-shots, over-the-shoulder shots and close-ups we've all seen thousands of times, to create "an experience of tremendous participation in an alternate world, which I think people will crave and are ready to pay for."

Trumbull is talking about changing the way Hollywood shoots their movies. Their very dogma. Personally I will have to see what Trumbull is talking about before I can fully comment. I think the way James Cameron and Peter Jackson shoot their movies is perfectly fine. In fact I see their Performance Capture technology as the next wave of production much more than I do with the elimination of standard cinematography shots. But I have an open mind. Perhaps all of this combined could soar over what we have today.

It is certain however that Hollywood and theatrical chains cannot sit idly by. Audiences ARE changing and demanding more. 3D and digital media are just the beginning. I'm very excited by these developments with IMAX, Barco and the creative genius in Douglas Trumbull, James Cameron and Peter Jackson. With the industry looking at the whole 'food chain' of production, distribution and projection rather than just one segment of it, audiences should ultimately get what they want.

The Michael Bay's of the world should not have to personally write to the projectionists and ask them to display his 3D movies at the recommended brightness. There has to be an elegant answer.

Where do you see the future of cinema? Near term? Long term? When I saw the footage that James Cameron showed us at CinemaCon last year in 24, 48 and 60 frames per second and in 3D I was stunned as was everyone else in the theater. The higher frame rates are amazing. I can't wait for you all to see it too! The question is, HOW will you see it? While most recent iterations of digital projection can handle higher frame rates, the folks mentioned in this article are working on the next level after that. It's getting exciting again! Can you feel it?

I'll be talking with all these players again at CinemaCon 2012 - stay tuned!
